Regarding the W540 vs other Thinkpad models

Hey there all,
I'm in serious need of some advice. After 8 trips to the depot/IBM support team, Lenovo has finally agreed to replace my W510 (was still under warranty). I'm limited to configuring a Thinkpad model. However, after some serious research, I can't find many positives about any of the models. Apparently in the last few years, the build quality has suffered.
First, I use my computer for basic tasks and run a lot of programs simultaneously. That being said, the furthest I usually push my machine is with Creative Suite. I never do any CAD/Maya rendering.
My questions:
Has anyone had any positive experiences with the W540?
Are any of the T models still worth looking into?
I never really used the red trackpoint, but I heavily rely on the trackpad. Will the lack of dedicated buttons prove problematic? Ditto with the keyboard being so far to the side due to the addition of the num pad.
Any advantageous alternatives (somehwere around a 2k$ budget).
Thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome imarsh
1. There are mixed reviews about the W540. They have the best screen among ThinkPads, however there are people who does not like the new keyboard and keypads (subjective).
2. As only ThinkPad W-series comes with NVIDIA Quadro GPU and they provide graphics acceleration for Adobe Creative Suite, I do not recommend other ThinkPad series if you are heavy on Creative Suite.
3. Like I mentioned in 1., it would be great if you could go to a computer shop to physically try out the keyboard and trackpad. You could try out any 40 series for keyboard / trackpad, the keyboard / trackpad will be similar or same as W540.
4. If performance is not too much of an issue, you could also consider W530, which is trackpad with physical button, and have better battery upgrades option.

I will address your second question.
First, make sure your iPhone and iPad have absolutely identical Apple IDs. If they do, use that Apple ID in Settings > iCloud on your iPhone to select the "Notes" option. Lo and behold, all your iCloud notes should appear on your iPhone.

I have a MacBook Pro , Model Identifier MacBook Pro8,2 , MAC OX S 10.7.4
I noticed that if I open Final Cut Projects created on other/older models MacBook Pro Laptops or MacPro Desktops, the fonts used in the previously created FCP projects, change their font spacing! which distorts the look of the Text that was written, by oevrlapping on other things that were put & present on the screen.. Another similar probelm is that the Vector shaped used for example to highlight certain words or shapes, also change their position on the screen so that they no longer highlight exact things that we once used these vectors to highlight or outline... Anyone knows how to solve this problem please?? I made sure that the same fonts are available in the Library in both old and newer computers...
thanks in advance..

You might want to take your question to the FCP forum - if you copied all fonts to your Library>Fonts folder and restarted they should be recognized by all applications. I know that this works for Adobe products, anyway.

• Will there be other subscription models in the future?

I've noticed that their is a unique model for potographers, but will adobe come with other subscription models, like for webdesign where you have muse + photoshop and or illustrator? Cause i'm thinking of subscribing to the creative cloud, but i don't need all the apps that full subscription offers....

I would recommend that Adobe offer a "pay per use" instead of a monthly subscription. Kind of like how Amazon Web Services work -- "you only pay for what you use".
For example, when the app launches and there is activity in the app, the "meter" starts ticking... something like 0.0001 cents per minute or something. Then at the end of the month, the time usage is tallied and you are billed according to what you've actually used. Of course there would have to be offsets for folks with faster machines vs slower machines, but I'm sure a computer scientist could figure out a proper algorithm.
I just can't get behind a static, monthly, never ending subscriptions, when some months I only use photoshop or Illustrator for 1 or 2 hours. While other months I'm running 100 hours or more.
I don't mind paying for what I use, its the paying for what I don't use that bothers me. It feels like telecom.... er... highway robbery.

• What's keeping me from buying the W540

I have $$ to spend and no Lenovo to spend it on.
Here's what's keeping me from buying the W540:
1) Physical buttons have been removed above the trackpad.
Many, many people complain about this in the W540 reviews:
"Touchpad: I've commented elsewhere that this is the worse I've even seen. Absolutely useless. I've disabled both the touchpad and touchstick (again, useless) and just use a mouse."
"I'd try the touchpad on the W540 for a while before you decide you can live with it, it is truly as bad as all the reviews say. I've disabled mine and use a mouse."
"...two issues with the touch-pad. The first has to do with having to clunk the whole pad as opposed to tapping on a much smaller (and quieter) button. The second has to do with the touch pad activating when you are typing."
Member "Bauden" provided an excellent rationale for why this feature change is wrong for Thinkpads:
"For a MAC, a "click-pad" may work because the ENTIRE OS is designed to be used by a single mouse button. You CANNOT force this on PC users. On PC, right-click is used frequently for many essential functions, dragging and dropping and context menus . . . . the habit of using it has been ingrained into PC users by years of Microsoft tradition and applications (NOT APPS!)."
I've used 10 Thinkpad laptops, I can't imagine being OK with that either. Needing to use an external mouse is unacceptable.
In fact, I'd bet the extra pressure needed to "tilt" or "clunk" the entire trackpad down to do the equivalent of pressing a gentle button from before will cause a greater frequency in RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury) in Thinkpad users.
I do not see a single person who feel this feature removal/change is an improvement.
Therefore, Lenovo, can you please change back?
2) Bizzarre Resolution (2880 x 1620)
I need / want UHD. I am thrilled that you are finally selling higher quality screens on your laptops.
(Thank you Apple for putting that competitive pressure on laptop vendors.)
Lenovo, please provide the resolution on the W540 that you have provided on the new Y50. (3840x2160)
Why did you choose (2880 x 1620) resolution?
1920 x 1080 isn't an even divisor of the native dimensions at full resolution, so resolving scaling issues by going to 1920x1080 would never look exactly right.
But **please** Lenovo, keep the screen anti-glare.
If you make above changes, please keep the following features:
1) Anti-Glare screens
2) Trackpoint
3) 2 physical drive capability, 1 SSD + 1 other
although it doesn't sound as easy as I'd prefer:
"Thus, no matter what anyone tells you, you CANNOT buy a W-540 and think you will easily swap a DVD drive with, say, a second hard drive. It’s minor surgery, best done with a jeweler’s screwdriver and some fine needle nose pliers.
Be sure to read the User Guide to keep from breaking the hatch cover. When I ordered mine, they shipped the Ultrabay carrier and the hard drive from the US, so they arrived early. I had to install them myself and found manipulating the tiny screws and pulling the hatch cover to be a bit scary.

I especially agree with these minuses in the "+/-" very detailed review by "Bauden"

= Missing bluetooth indicator light
= USB 2.0 vs USB 3.0 ports can be easily identified with industry standard 'Blue' for USB 3.0.
Why did you decide to not do that?
After a couple hours of reading, I'd agree with the conclusion of Bauden when s/he said:
"Overall a nice speedy machine, but that is not by Lenovo R&D.
Intel, nVidia, and m.2 SATA are all wrapped in a container that is very poor when expecting a product labelled "Workstation". This is NOT a workstation among the items mentioned above and the wrong screen aspect ratio for photography / graphic applications."

Idea
It seems like the team who designed the Lenovo Y50 did a great job for that machine's intended purpose.
http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y50-uhd/
(but is it really shipping in any quantity? Not a single user review posted to the community.)
Maybe take the team who implemented the Y50 and have them design the new Thinkpad W550.

Update:
I'm glad those reasons above kept me from spending my own $ on this model since work ended out upgrading my old laptop. Options were a W540 or a T440. I had about 15 seconds to decide. I went with the W540 tp get a larger screen.
Thoughts after several months: T
Best thing on a day to day basis:
Overall, it's a screamer. I can throw any workload at it and it doesn't flinch.
( I7, 32gb memory, drive upgraded to a 1TB Samsung EVO SSD)
Life is too short to wait on slow systems or slow hard drives. This "best thing" overshadows everything else and makes me very happy with this system.
Worst thing on a day to day basis:
The keyboard layout. PageUp should be above PageDown. Home should be above End.
Useless number key area. Why? The NumLock key is right next to the Backspace key. I'll accidentally toggle that Numlock key once a day or so when hitting backspace. Then, the PageUp, Home, etc., keys on that keypad are useless and unpredictable.
Mildly annoying:
1) The mousepad, for reasons described above. Its tolerable but not great.
2) The new DVD button location. I accidentally open it twice a week when picking up / putting down the W540, and I've *never* used that silly DVD player.
3) The "B" key, the key that's directly down from the red Thinkpoint tip, isn't right. It doesn't press down cleanly. bbbbbbbbbbbb It's like it gets hung up on the red nibbet.

• Is the W540 really that bad?

I am looking to replace my aging W500, as the TrackPoint buttons are wearing out and the GPU performance is not quite up to par. After reviewing other mobile workstations, I keep coming back to the W540 and find that it still seems to be the best in terms of quality and build. I have read all of the nasty reviews, and I would probably agree with their viewpoints, but I have also read some positive reviews that claim that the redesign just takes some time to get used to. I can deal with the off-center keyboard (actually, the numblock is the feature that I missed the most when I purchased my W500), new keyboard keys, and repositioning of the insert block, but the new trackpad still worries me. So now I am asking owners of the W540 (and any current-gen ThinkPad, really):
1. From a TrackPoint user’s point of view, how is the usability of the new TrackPoint? Is it possible to simply tap on the top corners of the trackpad (where the lines are) in order to left or right click, or does the entire pad necessarily have to be clicked down?
2. How is the clicking mechanism on the new trackpad? I have used an awfully stiff HP trackpad before, and I never want to do so again. However, watching videos of xx40 ThinkPads makes it look like the pad uses a keyboard mechanism to click, which would be much easier to click. To me, this would make the trackpad suitable.
3. How is the FHD screen? I have heard nothing but positives about the 3K IPS, but the resolution is too high for me (scaling still sucks in Windows), and it is not worth the increased cost and power consumption to me. How does the FHD compare to the 1680×1050 one on the W500, or the 1600×900 one on the T510 (I have used one for a brief period and was satisfied with its display).
I understand that the physical TrackPoint buttons will most likely return in the next ThinkPad refresh, but I would rather not wait until February-March to get a new computer. I am also open-ended to new design concepts as long as they work and are usable. As I said, the physical TrackPoint buttons on my W500 are wearing out (the left click in particular does not register unless I press very hard, and I expect even this to fail rather soon), and I cannot stand my current trackpad (the pointing capabilities on the new one look promising, however).

Thanks for the feedback guys. It looks like I will be going for the W540 after all. After browsing reviews of the new ThinkPads, I think I have come down to this:
1. Earlier review models and early production batches had hardware issues with the new touchpad, as many reviewers had straight up defective click detection, while others had a working touchpad. This led them to hate the touchpad because it seemed unusable from the beginning.
2. Some early adopters had a functional touchpad, and they either found it inconvenient or better than the previous one. Either way, it wasn't a big deal for them unless they had some major ergonomics issue.
3. Once the new ThinkPads had been out for a while, the complaints of touchpads that failed to register clicks kind of died out, and some reviewers who looked at multiple models found that to be the case with their second and third ratings on the trackpad above their originals.
I'm not really a ThinkPad "purist," and I can probably learn to like the new trackpad.

• W540 stuck on ThinkPad splash screen

I've got W540 (32GB RAM, 500GB HDD) running Windows 7.1 64bit that is constantly getting stalled at the ThinkPad splash screen during powerup.
It will often stall at the "ThinkPad" splash screen.
Other times it will stall at the "ThinkPad" splash screen with the "To interrupt normal startup, pess Enter" message displayed.
I've seen other entries that reference this issue with:
- using a SSD, I'm a standard HDD.
- a broken USB port. Mine all look OK (is there a way to actually test them?)
I've updated to the latest Bios and reset the Bios defaults with no change.
I've run the hardware diagnostic tests and found no errors.
When I say "stall" on the splash screens I sometimes find if I leave it alone long enough (maybe 5+ minutes) it will continue to the normal Windows boot up.
This is the 2nd W540 out of a pool of laptops to display symptoms similar to this.
Anyone got information on what may cause a stall at the ThinkPad splash screen?
Thanks.

Not knowing your exact set up, but KNOWING that this is a blind black box with no activity light like a normal workstation, you need to do workarounds.
Normally, on my older workstation, I could see the HD light blink and the rate would give me an inkling of the process.
The WORKAROUND: we now need to calibrate your computer clock to your watch, or use a cell phone time keeper which would already be synced if the W540 is connected to the WiFi (no switch so the W540 has to be connected, unless there is no access point). As an aside, I have found that when there are large MS updates, like last Tuesday, or other such WiFi connected updated, the compute also hangs with the user having NO KNOWLEDGE that the WiFi is talking / or calling home to some cloud device.
Back to the workaround: Boot the system, and when there appears to be a crash or hang in the sequence, note the time of the 'event' and also note the time when it appears to restart. Once properly booted, and I cannot tell you how often this has happened to my W540, check the even times in the [Event Viewer]. Too long to explain, Google the term "Win 7 Event Viewer", or check this:
MS Help - Event Viewer
Then find out where the computer chokes and restarts by checking the time in the events and the cause. These are i/o routines which the Lenovo Gods have decide to shield us from such WORKSTATION task.
FWIW, often I get <Program Not Responding>, when in fact it is performing a numbers intensive task.... yet I cannot tell what is happening as there is no i/o light. Usually unlocks when the task is finished, which may be what is happening on your system. You need to find out the task that is causing the wait.
Odd, the Lenovo Gaming machines Y50 have these lights, albeit atrophied: see lower 4 indicator lights....

• View questions regarding the Satellite A205-S5859

I would like to know the following:
1. Is there a problem with the speakers from it first use. The sound volume degrades. You have to set it to 100.
2. Can I upgrade the onboard video to a dedicated video ?
3. What's the maximum memory for this model ? Where is the memory chip located ?

A friend of mine has a A200 notebook. Its not A205 but very similar. The A205 is designed for the US market and the A200 for the European market.
So finally I can provide some suggestions regarding the point:
1) Any sound volume issues are not known to me Everything is working ok.
2) No, the graphic card upgrade is definitely not possible
3) I presume this info can be found in the user manual. Did you check this??
But I think there is a possibility for a upgrade to 4GB RAM. But I would not recommend upgrading the RAM to 4GB due to the 32bit OS limitation. All 32bit OSs can handle max 3.2GB RAM.
Finally the position of the memory slots; I think its at the bottom of the unit.

• Calculate a measure depending on the value of other dimension

HI,
I would like to know if it’s possible to calculate a measure depending on the value of other dimension. I want to calculate this measure in the Business Model and Mapping. I show you how I am trying to do it:
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/2496/imagenjp.png
But when I try to make an aggregation of this measure then I get an error of consistency.
I think a good example to make you to understand me is the function TODATE which calculates an aggregation depending on one time dimension. I would like to do the same thing but regarding to the value of other dimension.
Can someone help me? Thanks a lot.

Hi,
Do you have that dimension table as a "Sources" in that BMM folder? if yes, then you can use the "Data Type" option and click on "show all logical sources". Then click on your fact table using which you want to do the calculation and then use this formula. After that you can have the aggregation.
It should work.
Thanks,

• Regarding the BAPI calls without input

Hi all,
We are developing on webdynpro component. I came across a scenario where we call the BAPI through Adaptive BAPI model. This bapi doesnt take any input parameters but returns 7 tables with data.
So, My problem here is i am not getting output in the 7 tables. i am sending a dummy input and executing on the input elements modelobject.
Could anyone ddid this scenario.. ie., calling/executing teh BAPI call which doesnt have any input s but expects output.
Here is what i have
Z_Sales_Order_Header_Input bapiSalesOrderHeader=new Z_Sales_Order_Header_Input();
wdContext.nodeZ_Sales_Order_Header_Input().bind(bapiSalesOrderHeader);
wdContext.currentZ_Sales_Order_Header_InputElement().modelObject().execute();
int ilSalesOrderTypeSize=0;
ilSalesOrderTypeSize=wdContext.nodeZ_Sales_Order_Header_Output().nodeSalesordertype().size();
Thanks & Regards,
Raghavendra Pothula

Hi Raghavendra,
If I read you correctly, you are printing the size of the root output node (Z_Sales_Order_Header_Output) and not that of the output node inside your 'Z_Sales_Order_Header_Input' node. When you execute the RFC, the output node inside the 'Z_Sales_Order_Header_Input' node gets populated. so try printing the size of the 'Salesordertype' node inside the 'Z_Sales_Order_Header_Input' node.
-Z_Sales_Order_Header_Input
---output (this is the default name)
---Salesordertype
Infact there is no need to create the 'Z_Sales_Order_Header_Output' node itself in the controller or view.
Hope this helps,
Best Regards,
Nibu.

• Re-Usage of SSD in more recent Thinkpad model

Hi Community,
I've got the following situation: My W530's SSD broke down two weeks ago, so I asked my administrator to send me a new one with Win7 and company-related stuff pre-installed (I'm working remote). He said he didn't have a W530 on site, but he could install it on a W520 and send over the SSD, all I would need to do is to run System Update to fix all the drivers. Because I needed a replacement quickly, I agreed. The machine seems to work alright for basic operations, but CPU-heavy stuff i.e. Photoshop doesn't perform well. When I compare some benchmarks (Apache Bench, simple HTTP Calls to a WebServer) to my colleagues way older W520 I'm just hitting 40% of the performance.
Does anyone have experience in reusing a HDD in more recent Thinkpad model? Or is that a bad idea at all? Any ideas how to fix this installtion?
Thanks a lot
Sebastian

You don't have to worry about using a older HDD or SSD, it will work, slower, but it will work. I would also do it.
Make sure to buy a SSD between 256-512GB. A 256GB SSD lasts twice as long as a 128GB SSD.
A W520 can't be that slow. 10% performance difference at most on the CPU side, and they use exactly the same GPUs as far as I know.
Don't they sell decent SSDs in local stores in Germany? In Belgium I know they have Samsung 840 Evo's in MediaMarkt for example. In your case time is money, I would quickly grab one and give it to your IT administrator with your W530.
I still have a Western Digital 300GB HDD from 2009, which is still spinning.
But that is just my idea. But to answer your question again, an older SSD or HDD may work if it has a SATAII or SATAIII interface.
