Regenerating previews at startup

There seems to be a hardcore persistent group of about 18 files on startup which Aperture keep regenerating previews for, it slows my system right down and I can't use Apeture until the operation is completed. I've tried all three option from Rebuilding the database to repairing it but the issue perists,I have a mostly managed Library and have read it can be down to consolodation, but those files had been consolodated long ago.
What is going on?

One thing that I noticed all the offending files had in common was that they were either videos or audio files (fly, mov, mp3) and not imagery. I exported the originals (I use a Managed Library) and converted them with QuickTime Player to MOV format and then imported and then replaced the file to which the problem then subsided.
I think it might have been down to the software I originally used to convert the videos, as I mentioned some were .mov and there aren't a lot of those things flying about on YouTube, I know I would have converted it (especially when the original file name has "YouTube" in it), of which QuickTime 7 would have been used because I could embed metadata, this obviously the course I took before Aperture accepted video formats because I notice that Aperture cannot import existing (custom entered) metadata into it.
What was really wired was that when importing files which were of the same name as the original (the one causing problems) that the file would disappear. I double checked by making a new copy of the file again and watching it import only to see it disappear before my eyes and nowhere to be found but in the Trash can, but why?
The difference being, that I can tell, is that unlike the FLV files the MOVs were always going to be MOVs (I always output moves as MOVs) and so Aperture must be doing something automatic when the conditions are right i.e. the file name matches and sends them strait to the Trash!
Even if I change the name of the video before importing the file it will keep doing this, not only that but the file cannot be traced back to it's location on my HDD, it just gets sucked in a lost inside Aperture, turning into a muffled (what seems to be unprocessed) image thumbnail of the video.
But it gets even weirder as I place those files into a folder for inspection (as the Trash can won't allow for metadata inspection, for some reason the pane is greyed out and inaccessible) those videos (still registered as such) turn out to be fuzzy pictures, not pliable at all.
However those conventions were with QuickTime X, using QT7 I was able to create (and then rename) a copy of the movie file (at almost exactly the same size in MB and so nothing was real changed!) and it imported okay. Now you might be thinking it was the way it was encoded, but one of those MOVs was always a MOV and came from QTX as a screen recording!
I don't know what's going on?! It seems to be that Aperture still has issues with other formats other than imagery, which was a major feature of the third release.
Now there are only two audio files that process and are done in the blink of an eye, I can live with that, thanks for your insight leonieDF.

  • After regenerating previews, images are there in Aperture, but many are missing in iTunes

I regenerated the previews in two projects in Aperture so the retouched photos are updated on my iPad.  Now, none of the 832 images in one project show up in iTunes and only 23 of 762 show up in another project.  The images look fine in Aperture (although I don't know if I can display previews). The projects I didn't regenerate are OK in Aperture & in iTunes.

    John,
I have seen the same results and posted a query last week.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17277428#17277428
Several other people have mentioned the same thing, although for most people it works fine.  I have to believe it's a bug at this point, although I do not know why it happens to some people and not others.  That would imply there is a pattern we can find that reveals the bug, and a different pattern in which everything works fine.
    So, questions back to you:
Do you have "Generate preview immediately" set?
Have you ignored Aperture and iTunes for a while and then come back to see what happens?
Do you have any projects which are synced correctly?
For your two projects that are not synced correctly, what is your project and album structure to get to those?  I.e., "Folder/Folder/Project/Album", or something like that... I'm wondering if the problem is with some sort of nesting of containers...  When I get home I can post the structure of my problematic photos.

  • Bridge CC / Continous preview regeneration?

    Hi!
I recognized several times, that Bridge is regenerate the preview images very often.
If I mark several images, the previews are regenerated. That is not so funny, as Bridge uses only one of my eight virtual CPUs (Intel Core i7 2600@3,4 GHz with four cores plus Hyperthreading) and it takes a while to build the previews of 300 or 400 images.
My RAW-Cache is limited to 100 GB. The Bridge Cache is limited to 500.000 images. That should be more than enough for my round about 1.200 pictures.
My Bridge provided by Photoshop CS 4 had no such issues.
Is there anything known, or has Adobe imrpoved their software really so much, that it fails more and more? Sorry, but I had really big performance issues with Lightroom 5. And now it looks like, also Bridge has decreased the performance.
Any idea, what I can do?
    Thanks!

This is not normal behavior, previews should only regenerate when altering settings in ACR or save after having changed them in PS.
There is a long thread about regenerating previews due to using the crop tool in ACR but that should be solved in ACR 8.2 or at least much improved and only affects files that have been cropped in ACR itself.
I don't know the architecture of the software but it seems to use as much as possible automatically and can be very processor demanding. But having 8 cores and 32 GB RAM in my Mac I seldom see more then about 40 % (often less) usage for Bridge.
For me using SSD and enough Resources Bridge seems still not fast enough but then again, I (like many others) only seem to be satisfied with real time behavior and that is still not realistic… , but seriously, I do think Bridge CC is very fast on my set up and using label or rating should not affect previews at all.
Then again, I also use DNG files that write data in the file itself, if you have Raw with XMP side car then it should even be a lot faster (if possible because rating is almost real time already)
Even if you have set to save ACR data to a central database instead of using this data in the side car xmp files then 100 GB is still way to much. I have the default setting with 1 GB and this contains data for about 1700 files, overwriting the oldest with newest. But as said, I don't need it at all because this data is already in the DNG file itself. When using xmp side car thes files contain the data also so there is no need to assign such large space for the Raw cache to my opinion.
Having the slider for cache halfway is also more then suitable for most common use. Even with 250K files Bridge will be unusable due to large cache and slow behavior. It just is not a DAM like a dedicated DAM while a dedicated DAM is not capable for the pre process tasks Bridge is very strong at
I would start checking ACR version (if you use crop tool very important to check) and restart Bridge holding down control key to both purge central cache and preferences.
Also check a problem folder on hidden cache files. If there are such cache and Cache.T files from previous versions they can cause problems and new ones can also get you in trouble, just not a good feature to use at all in my opinion.

  • How do I select my own image as a preview for the exported iMovie file?

    Hi all,
I am having an issue with the preview or startup image of the movie file after I export from iMovie.  I want the image to an image I select for the preview.
This goes for the actual icon image through Mac OSX.
    I am using iMovie 08.
    Any solution would be great!

I use a Blackmagic Intensity Pro card which has HDMI outputs to preview my FCP and Color timelines. http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/ It is very easy to install in a MAC Pro, mine is a 2009 model. You simply then configure it via the Audio/Video setting in both FCP and Color and in Motion too .. I forgot I use it there too. The card is capable of much more and it is a bit of a waste to use it in the way I do but I find it give very good representation of final output. It can be used to capture directly from many sources and they supply a very good break out lead for that. Did you set the out put in Audio/Video Settings - also on my card there are two HDMI ports one input and the other output .. Does the shuttle have two HDM ports ?

  • Bridge CC is not showing previews for PSD, PDF, AI

I am unable to see previews of these in Bridge CC. It doesn't seem to be hanging or busy regenerating previews, just won't show them. Double clicking opens the in relevant program. Using Windows 7 Pro and 64-bit version.

    Welcome to the forum,
Not sure if it's the issue or if it will help, but you could try purging the cache, etc..
    http://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/using/adobe-bridge-workspace.html
    Restore preferences
Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Bridge preferences file, including display, Adobe Photo Downloader, performance, and file-handling options.
Restoring preferences returns settings to their defaults and can often correct unusual application behavior.
Press and hold the Ctrl key (Windows) or the Option key (Mac OS) while starting Adobe Bridge.
In the Reset Settings dialog box, select one or more of the following options:
    Reset Preferences
Returns preferences to their factory defaults. Some labels and ratings may be lost. Adobe Bridge creates a new preferences file when it starts.
    Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache
Purging the thumbnail cache can help if Adobe Bridge is not displaying thumbnails properly. Adobe Bridge re-creates the thumbnail cache when it starts.
    Reset Standard Workspaces
Returns Adobe predefined workspaces to their factory default configurations.
Click OK, or click Cancel to open Adobe Bridge without resetting preferences.
If that does not help, you may try searching the Bridge forum or asking there.

  • Aperture constantly generating previews and thumbnails and detecting faces

After starting Aperture or scrolling in the browser part of the Split View Aperture starts to generat previews and thumbnails and detecting faces, staling all my work in Aperture for a long time. After a while it is done, but start again if I start scrolling a lot in the browser or restarting Aperture. Aperture does not crash but it is it takes forever to work since it stalls everything. I can also se that after working for about ten minutes in Aperture almost all of my memory is gone. After a freshly restarted Mac I have about 13 GB of memory and after about ten minutes of work it is down to a few hundred MB. After closing Aperture I only get back about 8 GB of memory.
    I have tried the following:
    * Rebuilding thumbnails for all picture
    * Force rebuilding previews for all pictures (Holding down the Option key)
    * Reprocessed Originals for all pictures
    * Repaired permissions
    * Repaired database
    * Rebuilt database
    * Deleted aperture.plist file
All of the above completed without errors, but I still have the same problem. I also tried to un-check “Maintain Previews For Project” and “New projects automatically generate previews” but with no luck (This is off course not a solution but a workaround).
    What else can I do?
    I hav the following:
    - iMac, late 2009
    - 16 GB memory
    - Aperture 3.5.1 (Had the same problem in Aperture 3.4.5 and possibly even before)

Is Aperture more responsive, if you defer the generation of previews by holding down the Shift-key when launching Aperture?
Feels a bit better but still regenerating previews.
Also, have you checked, if Aperture is more responsive, when you are working with a different Aperture library?
I tried creating a new library in two different ways using all pictures from my project "2010" which I know contains pictures that Aperture keeps regenerating previews from. First I exported the project as a new aperture library, but when I opened that new library it also kept regenerating pictures. Next I exported all originals from that project and imported them in a new aperture library and success. No more regeneration of previews. But I don't think it is a solution because I have over 23 000 pictures in my library and I will loose all adjustments, stacks and faces doing this to the rest of the pictures.
As to running out of memory - there have been reports, that "On Screen Proofing" might be causing this, disable it (from the View menu), if it is turned on, see this post:  Re: Aperture 3.5 repeatedly crashes as 'memory full' despite 32GB RAM
"On Screen Proofing" was not on. But to be sure I tried to toggle the menu item but it did not get checked, until I understood that I had to select a Proofing Profile first. After that I selected and unselected "On Screen Proofing", but it did not help.
Do you use any Aperture plug-ins?
I had an old plug-in for exporting to Picasa which I don't think works anymore so I removed it, but it did not help.
Is your Aperture library referenced or managed?
    I have a managed library.
    And where is it stored?
The Aperture library is stored on my local hard drive in the shared directory. I hade plans to share it with other users on my computer but because of these problems I have not gone forward with those plans yet.

  • Does generating Standard previews on import generate 1:1 as well?

OK, I'm am supremely frustrated now. 8 hours of preview generation down the drain because Lightroom will not discard 1:1 previews (I've tried 6 times) resulting in a 30Gb catalog. I had to finally delete it. I then let it recatalog all the files only to get 1Gb of thumbnails and no standard previews (so I can't look at the photos in decent resolution when I'm unplugged from the HDD where the originals are stored). I am not about spend 8 hours regenerating previews only to have the 1:1's not discardable (I do NOT want them). If I just re-import and choose to render images while it imports, will it create 1:1 as well? If so, I may just have to kill myself :P

I've tried both relaunch/Optimize and ensuring that "copy" was not checked. When I re-import the images at lower preview settings, the catalog does get smaller. It still seems a bit big for the preview settings tho. I think I'm going to scrap the entire catalog, including the dBase and see what happens with a new import. Gonna use "1440 Medium". I'll report back with what happens.

  • Green tint in RAW previews with Panasonic

I upgraded Aperture to 3.3. Previously I used the terminal "iregister"command to fix the green tint problem with Aperture and my RAW images with Panasonic GF3. The problem came back after the update and the terminal fix does not work now. I also tried regenerating previews without success. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Raphael, you got me there
The lsregister fix is a puzzle to me as well - what Frank Caggiano probably would call woodoo and waving a dead chicken over the computer. But sometimes it magically seems to work. It can help, if the latest raw support is installed, but the system cannot find it for specific media kinds. The lsregister command indexes the database of supported media types know to the operating system (launchservices.db).  This fix has originally been posted by Alan Roseman:
Re: Aperture 3 preview of raw file greenish
But also read the following post, that explain how this is supposed to work and to correct the typo in the command (there is no blank in "LaunchServices.framework" - but it is impossible t post such a long line here)
In short: Quit Aperture, open the terminal, paste the  follwing text in (all in one single line) and hit return; then reboot the system.
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -R /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Library

  • Aperture previews appear scrambled but pictures 'underneath' are fine.

When scrolling through the pictures the photos are fine 'underneath' these previews but I have been unable to reset them despite going through all of the recommended fixes - rebuilding database, regenerating previews etc.
Has anyone seen this before or could it be a problem from the camera?
    Many thanks,
    Tim

    Tim,
no, the images in the Photo Stream cannot be edited in any way.
You could either import the image into the library and recreate the thumbnails there, then delete the images from the Photo stream and add them again, if you still need them there.
Or try, if repairing or rebuilding the Aperture library will fix this.
See: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
I'd prefer option 1. It will be faster for a large library.

  • Why does a face show up on my iPad when I have deleted it from aperture

I am using aperture to tag a modestly large library (about 22,000 photos) all for personal use. I've been going through these photos and tagging faces. As a sort of "holding pen" for faces that I wasn't sure about in the unnamed faces strip at the bottom of the faces page, I put ?? (i.e., two question marks) as the name for a bunch of photos. Then I went through that face and either put the right name in, when I was able to see the full picture, or deleted the face - i.e., clicked the little x in the upper right hand corner of the box surrounding the face.
Most of the images disappeared just fine, and the "??" face no longer appears on the cork board in my aperture. I can find no evidence anywhere that I can see that the ?? face tag still exists in aperture.
But it must, because when I sync with my ipad, there is a face called ?? and there are pictures in it. When I look at those pictures in aperture on my Mac, I can't find the face - I must have deleted it.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how to stop it?
I have been having trouble with aperture syncing in other ways - I was getting a variety of errors in itunes when syncing the ipad - and so have gone through many steps, including repairing permissions in my aperture database, repairing the database, regenerating previews, turning synchronization off and on, repairing permissions on my hard drive, deleting the preferences (plist) file, and so forth, but even doing a clean installation of the photos onto my ipad (i.e., turning off sync and deleting photos on ipad, then turning it back on and putting the photos back on from aperture after doing all the above steps), I am STILL getting this ?? face.
All help will be gratefully received.

Homesharing has issues that have not been fixed over several versions of itunes and ios.
Only kind of fix is go back through your library and retag it.

  • Images not visible in epubs in Ibook

    Hi.
I try to create an epub containin lots of images. All the images are of maximum size 500*500.
When trying to view the epub in ipad, a few of the images are not seen. Only their captions are visible.
But when I double tap the place where the images should be actually present, the images open fine in full screen.
At times, the imae just appears for one second and then vanishes.
Has anybody faced similar issues? All imaes I use are jpg files.
Any help in this regard will be greatly helpful.

By George, that did it! I had regenerated previews, but I missed the main issue.
Why would thumbnails disappear like that?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Why do I have a corrupted export?

I am getting a corrupt photo every time I export a file in Aperture.
It is adding another photo to all the exported photos -> http://home.twcny.rr.com/jhpphotos/1.jpg
He's a cute puppy, but I don't want him in my London & Paris pics!
I have the latest version, this started in December.
Photos look ok inside Aperture. I just started using Aperture & added some photos from iPhoto to get started, then imported my trip photos & found this problem.
What can be going wrong? The interesting thing is that this photo ISN'T in Aperture - it's in iPhoto...! Exports from iPhoto are ok - no Gus.
I had this problem before I added 2BG crucial ram, so the ram isn't the problem as indicated in other posts. I had 1.5G ram before the addition of ram.
I appreciate any help or ideas to clear this mess up.
    Thanks, PWP

Version 10.4.9 was done on 3/13/07
Hmmm... the regenerating previews seemed to work, but only if I'm exporting jpg other than the original size. The original size export (version) is corrupted.
This is a pain! Gus looks like the Travelocity Gnome - he's in my London pics, Paris pics, Stockholm pics, Helsinki pics, Moscow pics, even in the sunset off my deck pics!
Thanks for the ideas.. keep 'em coming.....

  • Sort order problem

I have a minor, albeit annoying, problem that I can't seem to solve. I have one recently taken photo in my Aperture library which for whatever reason seems to have a preview that is dated as the oldest photo in my library. It displays in the correct order in all albums within Aperture, but in all other areas where the preview appears (Photo Browser in Mail, iLife, iPhone, Apple TV) it always shows up as the first or oldest item in any album in which it appears. The creation date on it is correct, I've tried rebuilding by database, regenerating Previews, deleting and reimporting the original RAW file etc...
Is there a way to rebuild the database of the Image Browser within OSX? That's the next thing I'd like to try. Any suggestions?

    Hi Eric,
My understanding of previews and master files is a bit patchy, but I thought I'd ask: Is the preview showing up in other apps as newest because it's the files you've made changes to last of all? If you import new files and make changes to them, does this change the order in which your problem file appears? I'm just thinking that maybe other apps are sorting previews by the Last Modified date, and if you're making changes to this file (Levels, saturation, cropping etc), then the preview will quite correctly show as the newest.

  • Can import TIFF files but not see or work with images

I previously used Aperture 2 with no problems. I have scanned a large number (hundreds) of negatives using SilverFast current version 6.6.2r2 using a Plustek OpticFilm 7500i scanner. These files are saved as .tif and are all approx 55 MB in size. I was able to view, work with them with no problems in Aperture 2. I can see and work with them in Photoshop CS4, iPhoto, Preview on my iMac and in any program on my PC. However, I cannot view them or work with them in Aperture 3
When I updated to Aperture 3, the scanned files were visible in the preview mode but not otherwise viewable. Another image from a different project would appear or the image was corrupted. I have done everything in Aperture Library First Aid. I have deleted all of my projects, including my vault, uninstalled and reinstalled Aperture 3 and have the same problem. The image is viewable in Browser (preview mode) but either no image or another image shows up in Viewer or Inspector mode. When looking at the Metadata info, the file name is correct but a different version name is being assigned from a different project.
Any ideas are appreciated. I am about to give up on A3 as it has been nothing but problems and unusable since installed/reinstalled.
By the way, JPEGs from camera, cards, etc have been ok. But one of the major goals I have is to capture my old negatives. Unfortunately, the SilverFast JPEG option is not a viable option as not a viewable file by most programs. I have used the VueScan software but have not been happy with the image quality. Besides, I don't want to have to rescan all of these images.

I wanted to give an update to my issue. The originals are 16-bit TIFFs using RGB color.
I spoke with Apple Support. After uninstalling, reinstalling, making a new library, importing, generating previews, regenerating previews, attempting importing after saving as JPEGs, 8-bit TIFFs, 16-bit TIFFs from other programs (all of which are able to import and present the orginal .tif files with no problems, Aperture 2 included), the conclusion was that there must be something wrong with my original .tif files.
I then brought up the only "solution" that had worked to date. That is importing the original TIFF, exporting it (via Aperture 3) as a TIFF and then importing the new TIFF. This has given me usable images and not just the previews. He said that that looked like the only workaround but that it wasn't a problem because of Aperture itself!?
As cumbersome as this process will be, it may be worth it. I have trialed Lightroom 3 (which can handle the originals with no problem), and at least so far, I much prefer Aperture's workflow and organizational approach.

  • Initial loupe view appears a little soft in LR3

    Windows 7 64bit Ultimate
    12 GB ram
    30 inch monitor resolution 2560x1600
    12000+ images in catalog
Standard previews set to 2048 Medium
Detail in loupe view seems to be soft.  When I zoom in, the detail is great.  When I zoom back, the detail remains good.  If I close LR3 and reopen, I have to zoom in and out to get the best detail in loupe view even on the same image.  I deleted the preview folder and regenerated previews at 2048 High Quality.  The same problem occurs.  This is making it hard to determine the quality of my shots.  It’s too time consuming to zoom in and out on every shot.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks for the update Ian,
    Maybe next time around.
That's really the only problem that I'm having, so otherwise I'm real happy with 3.2.
Thanks for all the hard work!
