Region 1 (NTSC) and Region 2 (PAL)

Is it possible to watch both Region 1 and Region 2 DVDs on my iMac? I currently live in the UK and have many region 2 (PAL) DVDs, I am about to move back to the US and would like to continue playing my Region 2 )PAL) DVDs but would also like to play my Region 1(NTSC) DVDs I have back in the states. Is there any way I can continue to watch my UK DVDs?
Currently I can only 'switch' between regions 5 times, then I am done, I've already switched once due to my move to the UK.
Cheers,
Justin

MacTheRipper will save the DVD to your hard disk and delete all region codes at the same time, so that you can view them from your hard disk. As the process is pretty fast (a few minutes, depending on the DVD) it can be used to bypass the region coding. It will create a VIDEO_TS folder that you can open with DVD Player (the app that came with your Mac and is part of OS X). It will take a LOT of HD space (up to 8 GB) so you may have to erase them after viewing.
VLC, on the other hand, will replace DVD Player and decode DVDs from both regions through a software process. DVD Player will still pop-up and ask you to change your drive's region coding, unless you change your Systems Preferences (Hardware > CDs and DVDs > When I insert a video DVD : set to ignore or to open VLC, instead of DVD Player which opens by default). VLC will not save anything to disc.

  • Region Attributes and Region Header on Tab Template. Apex 5

    All,
In order to have my pages not scroll, but instead have a region scroll I would do an overflow on the region header and attributes in apex 4.
When using this same method on a tab template, all of the reports within the tab templates get shown one after another.
    eg;
    region attribute......style="width:350px;height:758px;"
    region header..... <div style="overflow: auto; width: 350; height: 700px;">
it does make the region scrollable, but the tabs stop working and instead are displayed one after another.
Does anyone know of a fix / workaround?

  • MSI Theater 550 Pro - NTSC and/or PAL ??

I've read at most places the card supports both NTSC and PAL..but on www.msi.com.tw (global site), it claims the card supports only NTSC, and PAL support is arriving 'soon'!
Please let me know!  I want to buy the card from Amazon.com - maybe a little more expensive here than most places, but I need it to be shipped internationally - South Africa, i.e. (and not just to the US).  And yes, Amazon do claim the card supports both NTSC and PAL.
    thanks in advance.

I bought the MSI Theater 550 hoping that it would support PAL. But its not working.
    Check this topic.
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=113225.0
The image is highly distorted. This is very bad from MSI side. If it doesnt support PAL they should not have mentioned it. The site clearly says it supports both. Also on the box of the card it doesnt say anywhere if its NTSC or PAL version.
Someone from MSI please confirm. ATI website it shows theatre can support both pal and ntsc depending on the manufacturer.

  • Saving Project Properties as Defaults-It Always Opens in NTSC and Not PAL.

Whenever I open LiveType the Project Properties are set to the default NTSC 40:27.
All my work is done in PAL 4:3.
I have selected File>Settings>Remember Settings but still when I open LT I find it has reverted to NTSC.
Am I doing something wrong or will it always open in NTSC?
    Ian.
PS Sod's Law! I have just done what I said above and this time it has opened in PAL!
I wonder if it will always do that or is it just a one-off.

    Hi Ian & David
Whenever I open LT, it's always correct as PAL in my Project Properties.
However, whenever I go to File>Open Template it always defaults to NTSC, despite repeatedly using Remember Settings.
I'm new at using LT, so it's probably my fault. In the meantime, I'm very careful when using templates.

  • Exporting 14:9 video for NTSC and PAL

    Hello,
I'm working on 1080p video that will need to have a few output format, namely HD and SD 14:9 for NTSC and PAL.
At the moment I have no issue with getting the 14:9 video inside SD format, but my question is more of, should I turn my aspect ratio to PAL, NTSC, or should I keep it as square pixel? Viewing from inside a computer, the ones that has aspect ratio looked a bit squashed or stretched, and that worries my producer. I'm not technically savvy enough in broadcast knowledge to ensure her that everything is going to be fine once the video goes into broadcast, hence I'm posting the question here. I did my search on the web, but nothing seemed to help. Or maybe I'm just a big doofus that missed the very big hint in front of me. If anyone could help me figure this out, or point me in the right direction, I would really really appreciate it.
    Regards,
    Deo

Hey guys. Thank you for your input.
I think I may have overcomplicated the question in my state of panic with the 14:9 thing. Yes, the client did ask for 14:9 video, which to my knowledge is a scaled down HD video in SD sequence. A bit bigger than 16:9 in SD sequence, with smaller letterbox and cropped sides. From what I've read (in wikipedia), it's used in UK, Irish, French, Spain, and Australia. So the PAR should still follow SD PAL and NTSC PAR.
I've been barking the wrong tree, and after reading this, it seemed clear that I should be using PAR as TVs pixel is not square. And it's fine to have squashed and stretched picture of these outputs because computer's pixel is square. Right?
I'm not really in a position to ask the station, as this is a regional job with a few countries involved, so I'm not directly in contact with the stations themselves. But hypothetically, if I can ask, will they give me a set of guidelines to follow?

  • NTSC All regions DVD on Region 2 player?

I seem to recall that many (maybe most or even all?) PAL DVD players are able to play NTSC discs, if an NTSC DVD was created with all of the region options enabled would a region 2 player be able to play it?

HI Wes - not really a coincidence, more of a marketing process to carve up the world into the different regions.
Yes, Region 2 (Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, French overseas territories, Greenland) countries often also use PAL, but so do others not in Region 2 ( PAL covers most of Europe, most of Africa, China, India, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, North Korea to name a few). For example, New Zealand use PAL and are in region 4.
The TV standard is the key, IMO - make sure your footage can actually be seen in those countries, and then make the disc region free (tick ALL of the boxes and make sure it has a region code mask of 0).
My rather jaded view is that the regions simply helped ensure sales were optimised and have nothing to do with whether the disc will play back! But you are also correct in saying a lot of DVD players can play both standards these days, however I wouldn't rely on that when creating a disc.
Finally, if your disc is being burnt in your mac (or PC), make sure that you tick all of the regions in the build/format dialogue as if you don't there will be a conflict between what you are asking and what is hard coded into the DVD-R you are writing to. Region codes really only come into play if you are using a replication process.

  • IDVD and region code???

I started a project in iDVD and created/burnt a DVD. I live in Germany and sent this DVD to a friend of mine who lives in USA. Half a year ago I already sent her a DVD which I had created in iDVD - she could watch the DVD without any problem (no region code question appeared). But with my last DVD this question suddenly appeard !!!!!!!! What the ....?
    Questions:
1.) Does anybody else have this problem?
2.) Dows anybody know what to do so there is no question for a regional code for a DVD which was created in iDVD??
    Thanks for your help.

    fenderkicker

Hi Fenderkicker and welcome to the forums!
DVDs made with iDVD are so-called 'Region 0" (no specific region) and will play anywhere without upsetting region settings.
In the USA they use NTSC (29.75 fps) whilst in Europe we use PAL (25 fps). Most freestanding DVD players sold in Europe will happily play back both, but this is not the case in the US where few DVD players are set for PAL playback.
Could this be the issue? That your first DVD was in NTSC and the second in PAL?

  • Freezing discs and region issues

    Hi,
Creating Wedding vids in FCP6, using compressor to make M2v's on dual layer discs (imation).
Using DVDsp4.2 to make the discs. Clients all happy, but I've had two clients come back to me 10-12 months later saying their discs are freezing in the middle / latter parts, they can't fast forward or skip chapters, etc. They aren't scratched, they were encoded as best encode 150 minutes 2 pass.
Any suggestions greatly accepted. Also, I've selected all regions in DVDsp, but stuff I send to the UK won't play there.

    Welcome to the Boards
Freezes and stalls can often be due to high bandwidth or bad burns/bad media. Verbtaim DL is usually what I use (and so do others around here). If the DVDs were playing and then developed an issue it could still be bad media/dirt/scratches even if the scratches are not seen. When was the layer break in the project, is it right at the spot where it is freezing? I know you mentioned middle, but the break may not be there...
Note that if the video track is long (3 hours 10 minutes or so) a couple of players can act strangely.
    Media info here
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm
As to the Region issue are they getting a Region Warning or a PAL/NTSC warning, it would probably be the later I would guess...

  • Follow up from Real Pro thread - NTSC and PAL and AVCHD and FCE

Interesting topic line but can I just check one thing out from PAL land.
With an HD/AVCHD camera it is not recording in either PAL or NTSC as this is a analogue mode - so the issue issue of format is only relevant if i playback on a analogue TV. We have a digital tv so i record on AVCHD, deal in that format in FCE and burn to DVD (not sure in what format) play on DVD player through the digital TV.
If that is all correct then why do the manufacturers, in my case Canon HF10, talk about an NTSC and PAL version and then price differently - comparing the spec sheets from the Canon site I can see no difference. Am I missing something?

    Hi Tom
The thing i was trying to establish was whether really there was a difference (other than price ) in the so called versions of the Canon HF10. The specs are exactly the same. My assumption is that as the cam records in AVCHD unless you intend to play back thro a PAL or NTSC TV (bearing in mind most European PAL sets play NTSC as well) it makes no odds which camera.
My plan- and this is what I need to check - is to record and import into FCE taking your advice not to record in the highest quality to save rendering on import. After editing can export through FCE to PAL or NTSC DVD version for playing on TV.
    Does that sound right
PS I have found your book on FCE very helpful to date !!!!

  • Is it possible to have track and region parameters boxes under the inspector hidden by default when creating a new track?

I often need to access the effects section and/or select a different midi instrument and have to manual minimize these boxes. It would be nice if I could have these hidden by default as I'm accessing the portions covered by the track and region parameter boxes more frequently than I'm accessing the boxes themselves.
    Thanks!

Before answering your question, you have to make sure you understand the difference between the different track types in GarageBand.
Tracks, you record your music on
There are three types of those Tracks.
MIDI Tracks (aka Software Instrument Tracks)
Audio Tracks (aka Real Instrument Tracks)
Drummer Track (only one per Project)
    Global Tracks
These are the Tracks that can be shown/hidden at the top of the Tracks Area for specific purposes.
    Arrangement Track
    Movie Track
    Transposition Track
    Tempo Track
    Master Track
This Track can also be shown/hidden in the Tracks Area. Please note, you cannot delete that Track, only hide it, similar to the Global Tracks
Regarding the Tracks you record your music on,  you can delete any of those. It doesn't matter if you created them or there are part of a Template (maybe that  is what you refer to as the default track). Once you delete the last Track, the "New Track Window" will pop up to add a new track.
I will explain all that in much more detail in my manual "GarageBand X - How it Works".
    Hope that helps

  • CD/DVD drive does not read all DVD formats and regions

    Hi
My Teac-dw-224e-a does not read all DVDs formats and regions.
It does read CDs but no DVDs at all.
Not DVD-R and not even regular DVDs. I have checked the region of the DVD.
I have reinstalled the driver and also tried with different software.
    What can I do?
    Please help!

    Hi
It is possible that your DVD drive has wrong region settings.
In this case it is not able to watch all possible DVD movies from different regions.
Of course you can change the settings 4 times. But after this changing the settings are fixed and its not possible to change it anymore.

  • Currency in report taken from regional setting and not infocube

    Dear All,
I am facing very strange issue. I am using BEx analyzer 7.0
I executed a report in Windows 2000, Excel 2003. The values are displayed correctly with currency which is in cube irrespective of the currency set in regional option in control panel.
We are doing testing on windows vista and excel 2007 as we will upgrade to SAP GUI 7.10 and windows vista. I executed the report and the result values are matching but the currency is differant. The currency is taken from the regional settings in control panel. If I go to regional setting and change the currency, the report which is open in BEx analyzer changes the currency.
We are facing this strange issue for only queries on 1 infocube. Other queries on another infocubes/multicubes are working fine.
Has anyone faced the same issue. Please provide some pointers/solutions for above issue.
    Regards,
    Niraj

    Hi Shalu
    The Library 0FL has 4 currencies... i.e.
    HSL  - Local Currency
    TSL   - Transaction Curre
    KSL  - Second Currency
    OSL  - Third Currency
Go to GRR2 (Report form of your report), and double click on any column... You choose Key Figures in the Columns in a areport painter report... there you would have chosen any one of these currencies...
Right click on the column and Copy it and paste it... Now change the Key Figure of the copied column to the one you desire...
This should give you values in both currency...
To identify which form you have used in GRR2 - Execute your report and go to Extras Menu > Technical Information.. In the pop up window that opens, double click on field "Report".

  • NTSC and PAL

Under iDVD preferences and the Projects tab it asks a few things that I know nothing about:
    1) Video Mode: NTSC or PAL. What are those and when would I use one over the other?
    2) Encoding: Best Quality or Best Performance? Which is better to use and if I use Best Performance do I want to "Enable background encoding"?
    Thanks. -Jeff

there are no NTSC DVDs, there are only DVDs that have 29.97fps, 720x480 MPEG-2 video to maximize video quality on an NTSC analog output
... and THAT makes them NTSC DVDs.
Jeff asked: ) Video Mode: NTSC or PAL. What are those and when would I use one over the other?. Jeff, the are video standards used in different places around the world. If all your DVDs are intended for use in the US, just select NTSC and don't worry about it.
PAL and NTSC are analog modulations
... that differ mostly in the way the chrominance signal is treated (besides the image size and frame rate).

  • Ref. monitor for pal, ntsc and HD

    hey there,
i am working more and more on my own edit station. so i want to make it more efficient.
i need a monitor or TV to see my edits on a bigger scale, something like a reference screen!!
and i need a pci card to connect it, too.
but here is the thing, ideally i need one that i can use for PAL, NTSC AND HD projects!
    is that even possible??
my intention is mainly to see my edit on a bigger scale, not necessarily to have a 1:1 reference image because i guess that would be out of my budget. otherwise that would of course be very interesting!
    i use a 2x2.66GHz Dual-Core Mac Pro Computer with MAC OS10.6.4 and FCP 7
thanks for your help and interest!!
    andy

    hey, thanks for your reply.
unfortunately those high end reference monitors are out of my budget.
i would already be happy, to have some sort of screen (TV or monitor) on which i can
see my edit on a bigger scale. i don't need it for color correction or finalizing.
and as i work on SD and HD projects, it should work with both.
so, is it possible to use a HD-TV or a computer monitor for that?
    SDI or HDMI?
forgive me, if this is confusing, but english is not my mother tongue.
    thanks again for your help!!

  • How to modify regional settings and keep Acrobat 9.4.1 working?

When I modify the regional settings on my W7 PC (i.e. switching the decimal symbol and digit grouping symbol from dot to comma and vice-versa), I cannot print to Adobe PDF Printer nor can I convert Office documents to PDF files anymore. It seem like the joboptions files were getting corrupted (I can see read errors).
Can anyone advise on how to modify the regional settings and keep Acrobat 9.4.1 Pro working properly? Do I have to adopt the joboptions files (and if yes, how?)?
    Thank you for your advice!

The defaults for three are blank entries. That is there are no defaults, The only way to get those back to being blank would be to delete your preferences file ( Home->Library->Preferences->com.apple.Aperture,plist ) and possibly the files in *Home->Library->Program Support->Aperture* (but I don't think you would need to do these, not sure.)
However before you do this you should know there is no drawback to having these entries filled in. Aperture would only attempt to use them if you actually selected them while using Aperture. It won't be looking for them on startup. And if the programs pointed to by these entries no longer exist on your system Aperture won't even fill in the names in the menu items where these are pointed to ( *Photos->Edit with* for example)
