Region 2 DVD Problem

I have Lion 10.7.1 on my MacBook Pro. I want to view a Region 2 DVD. I insert the disc, but instead of getting a popup message asking if I want to change regions, it ejects the DVD. Is this something new in Lion? How do I change regions?

The forum you want to post in is this one.
How did you 'convert' your computer - using the built in Region Code changer (which allows five changes) or via another method? Did you try the disc in another player - it could be faulty.
VLC Media Player is a 3rd party standalone player that supports most formats, including DVD. If this plays it ok, then you can at least rule out a physical problem with your disc drive.

Hello hotlife12, All of the CD\DVD drives have the capability to bet set to a specific region.
You can only change the settings a maximum of 5 times and then the 5 time locks the CD\DVD drive in the last region you select.
This approach allows those that have these CD\DVD drives that may move form one location(country) to another, for example Europe to the United States, to change the location to the United States.

  • Mat**bleep**a DVD problem

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba equium psaaqe vista laptop it has a mat**bleep**su DVD drive. All of a sudden it stopped working, it wont read or write or recognize any CD DVD. I have researched the problem and the nearest I can get to a solution  can be found here.  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-gb
Problem is I can't locate  default data value DVD/CD-rom and the class data value cdrom? As this is alphabetical it seems its not on my system. And as the CD drive isn't’t working I can't reformat any ideas solutions much appreciated.
    Cheers

So no replies surprise surprise! I have trolled the internet and find lots of mat**bleep**a DVD problems, I also note many complaint's regarding Toshiba support. All I can say is I will never ever buy a Toshiba product again. My equium failed after I removed the tempro product support program, Toshiba sent me an email informing me my hard drive was over 50% full buy a new laptop, it then suggested a model costing over £1000. I concluded that the program was there to spy rather than help its customers. Toshiba got my money and ran off like a thief in the night!

  • Playing any region DVD

    Hi All
At the moment I have a range of region one and region two dvds. I am going on vacation in a few days and would like to be able to play both my region one and region two dvd's on my iBook G4.
Is there any application that you can install onto MAC OS X that enables me to play any region DVD, without having to change the settings on the DVD drive as you are restricted to the number of times yuo can do this before it sticks with the last setting?
Or, is there anyway around this?
    Many thanks
    Garry

You might want to look at this website:
    http://www.macos.utah.edu/Documentation/DVDRegionFree/RegionFree_Main.html
Be very very careful; if you make any changes to the firmware of your DVD/CD drive there is the potential to make it inoperable.

  • Regional DVD question

If a DVD was brought outside North America the region code would be region 2, is it possible to make back up copies of region DVD's that were bought outside North America?

    Yes, Use Mactheripper.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22715
Insert the disc and set at NO Region.
Then you will need to use either Toast 7 or Popcorn, these will compress and burn the DVD to fit on a standard 4.7gb disc. It is very easy to do.
The other choice is to use VLC Player that will play all regions without you using up your 5 changes.

  • Output to create Region 2 PAL DVD Problem

I recently completed a 35 minute sequence, with my Audio/Video settings for sequence set as DV PAL 48 Khz. I exported a QT movie set at DV PAL 48 Khz. I then used this file with Roxio Toast set to PAL to burn a DVD. The burn was done on my G4 Powerbook, which is currently set to REGION 1. When the DVD was complete, it plays perfectly on a televison monitor connected to a REGION 2 DVD PLAYER. BUT, it seems that it won't play on a computer where the DVD drive is set to region 2. The error message is something like: "Unrecognizable DVD." Did I make an error in the FCP output? What might be the source of this problem? Any suggestions on how to use this FCP QT output to create a DVD that will play via a computer as well as a DVD player for region 2?

    Pamela:
Something else. I cannot found in my Toast 7 settings any reference to "region" in DVD settings. I'm pretty sure that Toast (and even iDVD) creates region free video discs.
Video standard (PAL or NTSC) has no relationship with region settings.
DVDs from Europe are PAL and region 2 but those are independent settings when authoring the disc: PAL content doesn't mean "automatic" region 2.
In pro authoring applications (like DVDSP) you can set the region to anything you want no matter the video standard (PAL or NTSC).
    EDIT
Just to confirm that iDVD creates Region Free discs:

  • DVD/CD Region setting problem

I have a HP notebook with a Toshiba MK 8025GAS master DVD/CD drive with the slave TSST Corp CD/DVD TS-L532M I am having trouble changing the region settings as it states I have 1 change left but when I try to change the setting from Region 1 to Region 4, I get the responce "Unable to update region setting. Make sure the drive contains a region 4 media and you have administrative privilege". Can anyone please advise me what I can do about this? Thank you.

    Hi,
The first thing to try is to choose a different Region 4 DVD and see if this works, sometimes you have to try several before finding one that works when resetting the Region Code of the CD/DVD Rom.
    Best wishes,

  • DVD Problems on Mac Mini Server

I am installing a Mac Mini Server box and have two problems with the External MacAir DVD drive.
    1. It won't boot the install DVD - Yes I held down the 'C' key through the boot sequence.
    2. I have changed all disk insertion events (in System Preferences - CDs & DVDs) to ignore but if I insert a blank DVD (to do an unattended backup), it spits it out again if I am not logged in. If I am logged in, the DVD stays put but I need to have the console logged out.

  • Install failure due to "faulty DVD" problem: only with Family Pack?

After going through a few threads on the subject of installation failure due to tbe pseudo-faulty DVD, I have the impression that many users mention that they were using a Family Pack install DVD or in one case a "drop in". The former is my case. Please post if you have had this problem with Leopard install, and whether you were using a single licence, family pack or drop in. It's just a hunch, but perhaps this problem only affects a specific set of disks.

I believe that they are holding back on sending a new DVD until they know why there were defective ones. I read somewhere that they require a new SKU so that they will actually be a separate batch.
Can you borrow a DVD from anyone to install Leopard? You certainly would be allowed to legally do that. I am surmising that Apple is overloaded with requests for a replacement DVD and really want to make sure it works. You know that old thing about "fool me once..."
Stuff happens - but with Leopard, a lot of stuff sure happened at once. They sold 2 million DVDs. If only 5% have problems, that's a lot of problems to deal with, one at a time.
In time it will sort itself out, but in the meantime the rooms are full of smoke

  • Resolution to non-playing DVD problem?

It's been a while since I last dropped in here. Fortunately, I haven't had any problems! I was wondering if anyone ever figured out why so many people were having problems with DVD's that would play in their computers but not on DVD players. I may have an idea. I created a DVD project in iDVD 4.0 as a starting template. When I start a new project, I make a copy of the template and then proceed to modify it. Could this be the problem? In other words, could I get around the problem by deleting the template and creating a new template in iDVD 4.0.1 or iDVD 5? I was never able to get a playable DVD with either of these versions. Is there any chance this might work? It would be a bit of a pain to try it since I would have to upgrade the software and then reinstall the old version if there's a problem. But I will give it a try if anyone thinks it might work.
    G5 + Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

Your original message said " I was wondering if anyone ever figured out why so many people were having problems with DVD's that would play in their computers but not on DVD players."
My reply was to that 'observation'.
I've been burning DVDs with the all the iDVD versions almost from the start of DVD burning on the Mac and have been a participant in these forums for all of that period. The necessary second generation 'Superdrives' could write at a maximum of 2x. There were some problems with DVD player compatability (discs would play in a computer drive but not in a stand-alone DVD player) at that time that were resolved by changing the brand of media (not all brands of media have the same rate of burn-errors).
As DVD burners have increased in burn speed (4x, 8x and now 16x) we have seen a major increase in compatability problems on the forum which no longer can always be resolved by changing media brand. Higher speed burns create more burn-errors. Computer drives have the necessary error correction techniques to correct for these errors on playback. Consumer DVD players don't include the necessary error correction techniques to correct for these errors on playback because the stamped discs they are designed to play don't have these errors.
I have observed the problem on several different computers with several
different drives. I never have problems with iDVD 4.0. I am never able to get
a playable disc using 4.0.1 or greater. It also has nothing whatsoever to do
    with the media.
If the DVD discs you produce can't be played in computer drives as well as consumer DVD players, yes, you have a different problem. However, that was not addressed in your original statement " I was wondering if anyone ever figured out why so many people were having problems with DVD's that would play in their computers but not on DVD players".

  • Has to be more than a dvd problem...

Lucky me, my warranty expired last week...it's as if they have a button, once your warranty is up...BAM. I kid.
In the year I've had my PB I had to replace the superdrive. It worked fine for a while. I'm talking store bought DVD's. Then after a while dvd's would only start up if I had the pointer over the controller making it stay up. If I didn't the numbers would stay at zero even though it shows up on the desktop and dvd still spins. No error message, only way to remedy is a force quit. That was until two days ago. Now the dvd player won't start unless I have the force quit screen open...Am I crazy or is this really possible...
Also for about the past week all my apps. have been opening very slowly. Yahoo instant messenger I used to open and be on in a matter of seconds...I timed it, now it takes 1min. 13secs. Along with that, my DSL has been slowere than normal. In safari the bar you type in the web address is where you see how far loading of the site is, right? When I first started the bar would really quick load and just be blue...now it goes really really slow and is purple first, if I hit enter it turns blue but still loads slowly...
I don't expect any one person to have all the answers, as I stated earlier my warranty just expired so, any suggestions or anything would be greatly appriciated...thanks... P.S. Am I the only one this has happened to?

Have you checked your HD surface scan? You can check that using Techtools pro or drive genius and scan the HD.
If there are any bad blocks/sectors in your HD it could gives the problem like you described.

  • CD/DVD Problems w/7.3: Error 261 - DVD Backup & Not Recognizing Audio CDs

    Hello,
Since updating to iTunes 7.3 I have had issues with:
    1) iTunes recognizing an Audio CD - so I cannot currently import from CDs. This goes for Windows too in Windows Explorer; I get an I/O issue error
    2) iTunes making a backup DVD - I receive the iTunes error 261 with a fresh disk; however, my Picasa photo program quickly created a photo backup DVD.
Windows does successfully recognize a CD-ROM. Toshiba, my notebook manufacturer (Model M35-S456) does not recommend any chipset updates. I checked Intel's site (Chipset is 855PM - I/O controller is 82801DMB (ICH4M)) and it really seems like overkill to mess around with this since the issue appears linked to install iTunes 7.3.
I have followed troubleshooting suggestions and submitted my diagnostics (to assisting Apple determine drives that are having problems) at the following post - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93444

hi, this could be a gracenote cddb issue, when you pop in an audio cd, itunes tries to access the gracenote database > if it cannot then sometimes the cd will not populate in itunes. to test : disable your internet connection entirely > then pop in an audio cd > does it read the disk? > then it is likely and issue with something blocking itunes from querying that site/server.
