Registering a 65w power supply? Where? How?

Just had not one but TWO G4 17'" powerbook power supplies go dead on me within the span of two weeks. The first one shorted out totally and left charred plastic and burn marks right where the cord the plugs into the computer meets the power brick. However the second literally caught fire in front of my eyes!
I was working on my laptop when suddenly everything shut down. I was confused at first but then I noticed the burning electric smell. When I glanced down at the power supply I saw blue sparks and tiny flames coming from where the cord meets the brick (computer side). I immediately unplugged my laptop first and then killed the power surge strip. The cord was totally burnt to a crisp. Gnarly...and good thing I was home when it happened!!!
Anyway, took it down to the Apple store where I got surprised looks from the staff but long story short my applecare was expired and they didn't have any 65w power supplies to "swap out" with me since all the new books use the 85w standard. Needing my computer desperately, I swallowed my bitterness and plunked down the $90 to get a new power supply. (Personally I find that price outrageous...especially since I recently had a problem with a LaCie drive and they sent me a new power supply free of charge without any hassle whatsoever!)
So I am using the one cord to power the two machines currently and I tried to register the darn thing in case this one decides to ignite but on the registration page I can't find any product listing for the power supply...or other apple peripherals for that matter. Its funny too because the Apple store staff made a huge deal of telling me to register the plug and I can't find a way to do it. I own many Apple products and they are all registered but it seems I am lost when registering something simple like a plug.
Can anyone out there help me or provide a link?

yeah, I figured I would simply call AppleCare or take it back to the store and have them explain how to register online...since they said I could specifically register the power supply online.
also just to clarify things, the cords were not damaged but they were 3 years old. the litlle plastic flange nubs that are near where the cord from the laptop enters the brick were still intact. in fact, that is what MELTED and got all crispy and black. it seemed to me the problem was that the plug was somehow damaged INSIDE the plastic sleeve right where it entered the power brick.
I agree to never wrap the cord around the brick though. One thing that I must say to people who bought the G4 17" books when they first came out and are still using the same power supply, please take note of how hot the brick gets. Right before all this grief happened I started to notice that the brick was getting VERY warm (dare I say hot?) to the touch. I never once noticed any physical damage to the wires or connector...as far as I was concerned the power supplies were slightly less white but there were no visible signs that they were going to ignite.
At this point it is too dificult to determine the factors that may have caused both power supplies to catch fire, so I won't speculate. However, my new power supply is plugged into the same outlet as the other two and working fine. It is also much much much much much much cooler to the touch than my old power supplies.
My advice: if your G4 powerbook power supply is too hot for you to hold it in your hand it may be time to take advantage of AppleCare and trade it in for a new one OR go to your nearest Apple Store and plunk down $90. Your choice!

  • Will a 65w power supply work with the HP Envy 15t (which comes with a 90w)?

    I have multiple extra 65w power supplies from previous machines.  The pin that plugs in to the machine is different, but there are converters to get the right size pin.  If I get that right pin, is it safe to use a 65w power supply with the HP Envy 15t, which came with a 90w supply?
    One supply (65w) says the output is 19.5v, 3.34a.  Found another extra (90w) says the output is 19.5v, 4.62a.
    The one supplied with the Envy says (90w) 19.5v, 4.62a.  I'm assuming with a pin converter, I can use the second one above?

    For the 65W, It will work, BUT check the tip/connector. The only problems: battery charging could take longer time and for high graphics task it may display an error message. For the 90W, again pin/connector is the main concern.

  • Is the 65W power supply killing small laptop hard drives?

    Apple is NOT shipping 45W power supply units to my country (Costa Rica) and the authorized resellers are selling 65W power supply units to PowerBook 12" and iBooks owners, saying that older and smaller laptops can use the 65W unit without problems.
    In 1 month, 3 of my friends have lost their powerbook 12" hard drives, all of them were using 65W units.... is it possible that the 65W unit is damaging the hard drive?
    Apple documents don't mention any kind of problem related to using the wrong power supply, but doesn't say it's ok either.

    I actually printed that document and went to the store to show them they were selling the wrong adapter, but they said Apple is no longer sending/selling 45W adapters to them and they said also that Apple gave them a memo saying that 65W adapters cause no troubles to smaller laptops.
    As you can see in the article there's no warning about using wrong adapters.

    Yeah, this is absolutely possible, but what are the chances that the three laptops using wrong adapters had hard drive problems?...
    I basically want to know if this is happening on other countries (the "no 45W adapters" thing) and if also the hard drive problem could be related to the 65W one.
    Regardless, what happened to their original adapters?
    One guy lost it on a trip to the beach; the cable that goes to the computer was broken on the other two.

  • How big of a power supply should I get? / ram question

    Radeon 9800 pro
    2 40gb hd's raided
    1 20gb hd
    cd burner
    dvd drive
    Audiophile sound card (forgot the model #)
    and i'll soon have either 512 or 1024 of kingston hyper x pc2700 ram
    right now my power supply is 300w and i'm pretty sure that's not good enough.
    when i install the new ram, i'm also gonna install a new power supply.  how many w should it be, and any recommendations on brands to get?

  • Power Supply Mislead

    I have the top of the line PowerMac G5  from 2005.  I had recently been having shutdowns for no reason. Not knowing these systems I called Apple that led me to going to  being sent to the Apple store. I undid all the connections to my mac, took out my main hard drive , put this 50 pd giant on a dolly and wheeled it through a mall to the Apple store. After waiting a long time the AG put it up on the desk and said it was either the power supply  or the logic board and that they dont fix them . He handed me a list of "Apple Approved Repair Servicers"  and said goodbye.
    I went home and watched lots of video's on how to change your own 600w power supply. How to remove the processors to get to the supply. At 200 dollars I was going to do it myself, I'm that way. I stripped the machine down to the watercololed processor that was totally pristine. Not a singlle leak anywhere. Everything was immaculate. Then I came across and article on the PMU. Power Management Utility and how it can become corrupt. How it causes havoc coupled with the Energy Saver Utility that allows the power button to put the computer to sleep. Then it dawned on me, I  had noticed that pressing the power button resulted in an instant shut down. There was no 5 second wait. That was what had happened, it must be.
    Long story short I reset the PMU. Power Management Utility. It no longer did a instant shut off and I disabled the "allow power button to put the computer to sleep". No moore shut downs, this runs perfectly. You would think that would be the first thing a AG would do but apparently not. I think I will go back there and  mention it. Would be good to try first before suggesting the rest.

    Hi. I have a PowerMac G4 Sawtooth and it does nothing when you press the power button. I think it is the power supply that is the problem. I have a replacement power supply, but how do i get the old one out? Is there a guide somewhere? Or could someone make one that gives me the basics to get it out?

    Before you remove the power supply, you should check for "Trickle Power". Without this 5 Volt supply, your Mac has no hope of starting, and with it, your Power supply is likely working.
    With the Mac nominally off, but the AC power cord plugged into the wall socket, and the main 20-pin DC power connector still attached to the motherboard, measure the voltages by inserting a meter probe into the rear of each crimped wire connection. The black probe connects to any ground wire (typically black) on the same connector. More information and the pinout diagram in the article.

  • Upgrading graphics card & power supply in a new P6674y

    I just purchased a new Hp 6674y computer and wanted to upgrade the video card.  Reading here on the forums I got some good ideas for video cards for comparable computers to mine and also found out the power supply is going to need to be upgraded also.  My question is, can anyone tell me if there is a specific size, type or model of power supply that my particular model MUST use?  Or can I get a "standard" ATX 12v 600w or so, and replace it.  Also will an EVGA Nvidia GTX 460 graphics card fit into this case?  Thanks in advance for the help!

    A standard size ATX will fit.  I am using the GTX 460 1 GB in one of my PCs (e9280t) which has nearly the same cabinet as your PC.  I bought a Corsair HX 650 but there are other choices.

  • 90w vs. 65w power adapters

    We use the T61's and X61's with the port replicators for the T's and the Ultrabases for the X's.  Is there any reason or need for the 90w power supplies?  Please advse.  Thank you.

    Welcome to the forums.
    The difference between the 90W and 65W power adapters is quite simply the power output to the computer based on power consumption by the unit.
    The T-series systems with dedicated video cards (NVidia or ATI) require the more powerful 90W power adapters - the 65W PAs will not provide sufficient power required by the dedicated video cards. Thus the 90W power adaper is the only choice for T-series systems with dedicated video cards.
    The X-series, on the other hand, use an on-board graphics adapter without dedicated GPU and come with the 65W power supply simply because of the much lower power requirement. The X-series systems (whether docked in the X6 ultrabase or not), unlike the T-series sibblings, may use either the 90W or the 65W power adapters interchangeably.

  • Power Supply Cracked

    I have a friend who has a power supply where the plastic around the magnetic connector that goes into that mac has cracked rendering the power supply useless as the magnetic connector is no longer attached. Is this in the realm of abuse or does anyone think she has a case to stop by an Apple Store and potentially get a replacement power supply?

    All she can do is ask, next time she is near the Apple Store I will tell her to spend a few minutes and see if the store is willing to do anything. Worse case she is no worse off, best case she has a new power supply.

    Jajaja, I've done something similar, I build my own ps/2 to ps/2 wire with a utp 8 wires wire.
    For the power supply i took another option, directly to the pc power supply . It's sounds crazy but it works great.
    It's supposed that you ned 2 v AC (5 Amp and 400mA or something similar, :P), but i've read on the net that most of the equipments that ask for AC voltage have inside a "rectifier" (don't know how to translate from spanish, :P) that take the AC signal into DC. I've also read that there's no problem using 2V DC because if the signal in the input of the "rectifier" is the DC it only lets the signal pass trough. I've check by myself and it works great, .
    I've now it connected to a separated power supply from my pc, only for safety (I don't want to take risk for using this kind of equipment in my main power supply).
    I hope that if there's another person with the same problem than us read this, :P.

    The Mac Air was used on the charger for the Mac Powerbook.  It no longer charges from the original Air power supply.
    How can this be corrected?

    Yes.  The Mac Air worked fine on its originial charger.  My wife needed to use it when her PowerBook died.  She plugged it into the PowerBook charger which had the same plug at it worked on the PowerBook charger.  When I tried to charger it on the original Air charger, it no longer would charge on the Air charger.

  • How do I use LabVIEW to control and vary the voltage on my Agilent Power Supply and simultaneously record temp from 1 DMM and voltage from another DMM?

    I am using an Agilent Power Supply  to apply a voltage to a
    thermistor to heat an Al chassis.  I want to use LabVIEW to tell
    the power supply to apply 5V for 10 minutes, then step to 7V for 10
    minutes, etc.  I am completely new to LabVIEW, so any help would be greatly appreciated!
    In addition to that, I want to place a type J thermocouple onto the Al
    surface and use a Keithley 2000 DMM to monitor the temperature (it has
    a built in conversion from V to Temp for type J).  I will also be
    using another Kelthley 2000 DMM to record the output voltage of a new
    uncalibrated thermocouple.  I would like to collect the output
    voltage for this uncalibrated thermocouple and the temperature reading
    from the type J simultaneously.  How should I go about doing this
    in LabVIEW?  I will be using version 6.1.  The power supply
    and DMMs will be connected to a PC using GPIB.
    Again any suggestions would be greatly appreciated- I have no idea
    where to begin on such a project.  I have taught myself how to
    make a basic VI- converting temp in oC to oF, but  that is as far
    as my knowledge goes.

    What you want to do should be fairly straightward and a good way to learn labview. 
    First off, if you haven't already, I would download the drivers for the Keithley and Agilent instruments.  I found the keithley drivers at the link below.  You will need to find the labview drivers for the Agilent PS at their website.  Drivers are the VI's you will use in your program to control the insturments.

  • Help I think my power supply is going bad! Where can I buy parts?

    I am getting random reboots and it doesn't seem to be the OS... My first guess is the power supply but I can't seem to find one to buy... Does anyone know where I can buy one at?  Is there a good place for parts for the MEGA 180?

    The thing is that windows never leaves an error... I get nothing in the event viewer except windows was shutdown error no other errors are listed so I don't think it's windows... I ran a CPU Burn in test for over 24 hours and never had a problem so I don't think it's heat either... And the reboots are quite random I will go two weeks without one and then get them two and three times a day...  To me the power supply seems to be the easiest answer but since there hard to get I guess it's not so easy to check eh...
    I have done the fan mod (Turning it so it sucks in cool air) and I have a slot fan dumping tons of air out the back so I don't think it's a heat problem... I started to have the problem running Windows XP SP2 so I did a complete reload from scratch to Windows Vista (I know not completely supported but it works fine) and am still having the same problem...  I have a Haugpauge 150 pci card, Haugpauge USB2, A usbuirt pluged into usb and thats about it...  2 gigs of ram 2x1gig sticks from Crucial,  yes I have already run a memory check and it passed...
    Is there not anywhere to get a power supply?  Or is there another model that fits the mega 180 case?
