Registering my account on a 2nd hand computer...

Hello,
I'm trying to register my account on a 2nd hand Macbook pro, and even though I have deleted all traces of skype from the computer, and try to upload my account, I keep having the previous owner's skype account keep popping up. Can you please help me to resolve this. Thanks!

  • Think I'm in trouble,  2nd hand computer and don't know the administrator

I think I'm in deep trouble. We were given a second hand imac G3 and I went to update some things but every time I try to it tells me I need an administrators name and password? Whats worse is that I don't have any OS boot disks. Is there any way to reset the admin name and password?

    Hi cam9457!
If the original owner cannot provide the discs, you call Apple Customer Service 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number of the iMac G3, and you can purchase replacement original system discs.
But, you will also need to purchase a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs.
If you know what to look for, they can be purchased, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

  • Restoring and backing up my 2nd hand computer

I own a macbook pro....i bought it from my uncle who previously owned it. I want to back up all my files and restore it to original factory settings. how do i save all my data and a few of my programs? It is running slow, and i know there is too much on the memory from the previous owner, i never reset it when i got it and want to do so now. but i do not want to lose all my programs like CS5 and all my documents and photos. How do i do this?

Firstly, get yourself an external drive. Or two of them. Then copy all your files off to them both. Copy them. Dont use any program to do the 'backup'. Take everything off the machine that you dont wish to ever lose.
Secondly, do get the original system software that the MBPro came with. If the original MBP came with CDs then you should have them ready. Including their serial numbers.
Thirdly, note what all application software you want to use or keep versus those you dont need or want. Get their respective serial numbers. Identify their website sites and how to get a legal copy registered if anything were to happen (like a hard disk failure). If your uncle has bought any specific software, do remember that it will probably be registered in his name. If you have bought any software that you have added to the machine after getting it from your uncle, you should have these ready too, their serial numbers, relevant email ids, etc.
Once that is done, take a Time Machine backup. Of everything.
To get it back to its original factory settings may be complicated depending upon what the original OS version was. And what has been updated along the way. Do let us know what system was originally used when the machine was bought, and what you are OS version you are now using.

  • Registering a 2nd hand iPhone.

Hi I bought a 2nd hand iPhone for my daughter but I'm struggling to register it in any of our names. I have tried to add the serial number of the phone onto my list of apple products but it keeps saying the serial number is registered to another Apple ID. Can anyone give me any advice on how to register this phone in mine or my daughters name please?
I am trying to do this ASAP as I am aware now that a lot of people are selling there phones, claiming insurance & the phones are getting blocked.
    Thanks in advance

You can try calling AppleCare, but I doubt that will help. The person who previously owned this phone needs to remove it from their support profile, something you can't do.
As far as protecting you from a scam, sorry, this won't help you in anyway.

This is a second hand computer, i-tunes has an authorised account, how do I delete this?

You are logging in iCloud for the first time. In this case, first you need to log in iCloud on an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Mac. See > http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup
If you have not got a device to set iCloud up, you cannot use it. You can only use iCloud on your PC if you have got an Apple device

  • 2nd hand ipad not showing as associated device on itunes

    Hi All,
I bought a 2nd hand Ipad a couple of weeks ago from a shop (all legit). As I'm pretty useless with all things tech they synced most of my pics/vids and music from my Iphone using their computer in-store.  As my Iphone has more space than the I pad, I bought extra ICloud storage (not realising that this wouldn't create more space in the Ipad - told you I'm stupid when it comes to tech stuff!).
Anyway, after spending saving my pics, vids and music to an external hard drive via Itunes, I then synced my favourites to my Ipad to give me more space. I first noticed that there was a problem when trying to play some of my songs, it would say "this device is already associated an an apple I.d.. if you download past purchases with your id you cannot automatically download past purchases with a different id for 90 days".
Two issues with this.. The first being that the songs it is saying this for were NEVER purchased from Itunes - they were ripped from c.d's onto my Itunes library (and have always played ok on my Iphone and Ipod shuffle).  Secondly, I have only ever had/used one apple i.d for my computer, Iphone, Ipod shuffle and now this Ipad.  The Ipad has been fine using my apple i.d for everything else.. ie, apps, Itunes store and also buying extra i.cloud storage, so I'm not sure why it is viewing it as a different i.d?
After looking on my Itunes account I noticed that under "manage devices" it is only showing my Iphone and computer as an associated device (I'm not too bothered that it doesn't show my Ipod shuffle because I only sync my music occasionally on that). Is this because it's second hand, and if so what can I do about it? Although I bought this primarily so I can view my pics and home vids on a larger screen than my phone, I don't want to worry about losing music from Itunes if it's viewing my Ipad as belonging to someone else, or an authorised device etc. By the way, the shop I bought the Ipad from is legit, they ask for proof of ownership before buying anything - this Ipad was one someone received free as part of a phone upgrade before selling it so it can't be an issue with being blocked etc.
Thanks - any help and/or advice on how I can sort this out would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks for replying Ralph,,
I just tried that - still no difference. Ipad not showing up as an associated device on itunes, and on my Ipad when I try to turn automatic downloads on it comes up with the same message.. already associated with an apple ID.. 90 days etc etc.
It makes no sense as the extra icloud storage (and the money they've taken from me to pay for it) has been done using this ipad, my usual apple id and payment details and has been synced to my itunes account (which is associated with my id and authorised). If you have any other ideas (or alternatively know which dept I should contact in Apple) I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks :-)

  • Bought a 2nd hand MBA but now can't download iPhoto

I recently bought a 2nd hand Macbook Air and it already had Lion installed. It didn't come with the Lion USB so I can't do a reinstall if I wanted.
Now when I sign in to the App Store and try to download iPhoto or Garageband, I can't. It says something about my profile not being allowed to download it as the download is attached to another account, presumably the previous owner.
So how am I able to download iPhoto? I don't mind paying for it, but it still won't let me as the only option I get is "Download".
    Any ideas would be great.
    Thanks

I think you will need to wipe the drive and reinstall Lion after purchasing your own copy from the App Store. I suggest the first thing you should do now is backup anything on the drive you need to keep. Then sign in to the App Store under your Apple ID and purchase and download Lion if that's possible - I think you should be able to do that.
How To Re-Download The Lion Installer
This appeared as a hint at MacOSXHints.com, and will work to force the download of any purchase on the Mac App Store.
    Open the Mac App Store.
    Navigate to your Purchased page.
Hold down the Option key on your keyboard and click on your 'OS X Lion' purchase link (not on the 'installed' button).
You see the Lion product page. It should say 'Installed,' but that button is clickable. Hold down the Option key again and click on 'Installed.' If you don't hold the option key it will tell you there's already a newer version installed.
    Enter your login credentials.
    Download.
It's important to hold down the Option key twice. Once on the Purchased page, once on the Lion page. You also can't navigate to Lion directly, you need to open it from the purchases page.
If you follow this procedure you should find the Lion Installer in your Applications folder. Be sure to move it to your Downloads folder for safekeeping. Do not use it to install Lion, rather make a copy to use.
Once you can download Lion you want to keep it and make a bootable USB flash drive installer for yourself:
    Make Your Own Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Lion application. After Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing Lion.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the InstallESD.dmg disc image file into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable Lion installer that  you can use without having to re-download Lion.
Use the installer to first erase your hard drive then install Lion:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
Boot from your USB flash drive installer:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the USB flash drive and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Can't update iOS software - 2nd hand MacBook still wants previous owner's Apple ID

    Hi everyone,
I recently got a 2nd hand MacBook Pro.  However I can't update the core Apple software (iOS etc) since it keeps asking me for the previous owner's Apple ID.  The previous owner has deauthorised the MacBook via their Apple account, but software updates still ask for his ID, not mine.
I have registered the MacBook under my name, i.e. I am registered as the owner, but I can't update it.
Any ideas/suggestions would be gratefully received!  Many thanks.

    Hi Niel,
    Thanks for your fast reply.
A couple of questions if that's OK?
    - How do I uninstall/delete things like iPhoto, iMovie to be able to reinstall them again?  I'm sorry, I'm new to Macs, so I'm not yet familiar with the details.
    - If I erase the internal drive and install a fresh OS, is there any way to save my files/data/configuration to save me having to set everything up again?
    Many thanks

  • 2nd Hand Software - Final Cut Express 3.5

I couldn't find where to put this question so, I'll stick in here...
Does anyone know of any cavaets or 'gotchas' when buying 2nd hand software from somebody?
Apart from the obvious (original boxed dics, doumentation, serial numbers and any software installation keys as a minimum), is there some prodedure that the seller should go through with Apple to inform them that the piece of software in question is changing hands??
I'm intrigued cause I believe that Adobe insist on forms being filled out etc. otherwise you can't re-register the software, but if I were to consider buying a 2nd hand copy of FCEHD3.5 then I'd want to know it was all above board and not pirate software.
    Thanks!
    Luke

For a start, Apple will never know that FCE software has changed hands until you register it - and you don't need to register it.
However, if you do register it, I don't believe there will be any problems.
Adobe is quite different. With Photoshop you have to get their clearance and a "key" to even move it to a new computer of your own!
So I think you have got all the necessary "watch out for" points covered.
    Ian.

  • 2nd hand iMac - no software

    Hello all,
I have purchased a second hand iMac with no software. I already own an iMac and have upgraded it over the years from 10.4 to and then to 10.6.  As I am no longer using the 10.4 software, and have purchased new versions of 10.5 and 10.6, am I able (legally) to use my 10.4 software that is no longer used to install on my new purchase?
The 2nd hand iMac is a 15" flat panel G4 model. Will my Tiger disks work? If not, how do I go about finding software that is suitable?
    regards,
    Rhys

As long as the Tiger disks are full retail install (black disks and not the gray system/restore disks that came with another Mac), AND you don't have that OS on another computer, it should work.
All iMac G4s can run Tiger. If you have a 1G or faster iMac G4, it can run Leopard if you have a lot of RAM. I ordered a copy of Leopard last month by calling Apple (it's not on the web store). Leo comes only on DVD so if the iMac does not have a DVD reader, you're looking work workabouts.
Tiger is harder to find, and in such high demand that there are rip-off artists charging high prices for what may be pirated software. Be very careful when shopping for Tiger. And there are more Tiger DVD sets than CD sets about, so the caution from the previous paragraph still applies.
You can call Apple support and ask if they still have replacement system disks. You will need your serial number at hand so they can match a disk set to your computer. It's often the cheapest option but is subject to stock on hand.
