Regular Cd's cannot be read by my superdrive

Hey guys
I searched a lot before posting this thread but didn't seem to find a problem similar to mine.
i have the 2nd Gen. Macbook Pro (with the smart Track pad) Bought ths March, SuperDrive is UJ-875, Firmware Revision DA09 Here are the types of media that is accepted by my SuperDrive:
Original DVD Movies - Yes
Blank DVD's (of any type) - Yes
Burned Dvd's - Yes
Burned Cd's (of any type) - NO!
CD-Rom's received with products (such as sound card's) and even the Leopard installation cd's i recevied with the Mac - NO!
What should i do? update to 10.5.3? Rollback to an old Firmware Revision? Still have the wpple warrenty, Should i take it to an apple store?
Please help...

I have a MBP with the same UJ-875 drive, firmware DA09. I can absolutely replicate your issues on this. Under 10.5.4, the drive seems to read all DVD
formats and ZERO CD formats. I've not attempted to burn anything at this point. Only reads.
Side note- I noticed this when installing XP using Boot Camp. XP Pro is a CD format disc. I had to burn an image to DVD-R on another PC and that mounted
and worked fine.
This is my first Mac after tiring of "Windows issues" for over a decade and because "Mac Just Works". Hmmmmmm... Very interesting and irritating situation I
have with a $3K+ MBP not working off-the-shelf. I'll stop there.
I'm a tinkerer. After all resets of Mac-kind that I could think of and b/c I couldn't think of sending it back to BBuy for repair, I sought out the same
optical drive (well, nearly)- UJ-875S, firmware 1.00, fresh from Taiwan.
The unit came in, I installed it, did all the resets and permissions stuff and it seemed to work fine for CD format discs
I loaded it with a bunch of items- yet, I've not tried to burn anything still.
Now the big question--- With this new drive working, I wondered if something simply got reset in the system to allow it to work with the un-install (forgot
to mention that I did remove the factory drive, let OSX see it's not there, etc. first before installing the new drive).
This evening, I installed the factory drive again, did all the resets, etc. and it still did not work...
Put the new drive (UJ-875S) back in, did the resets and all works fine.
My conclusions- UJ-875, firmware DA09 is not currently compatible with 10.5.4.
I'm tempted to contact Apple and see if they will accept just this drive to fix in-lieu of sending the entire computer in. All is good now except for that
drive.
I hope there is a fix for these units at some point.
Good Luck and keep us posted!

  • I hooked an external hard drive into the '09 macbook, but when it's in the usb, it has a pop up that says the disk cannot be read, then brings me to disk utility. I have no idea why it wont read the external drive, as it has worked properly before.

I have an external drive with old music files (about 127GB worth) and I was hoping to put them onto my laptop. I hook it into the USB port, and it pops up an error message saying the Disk cannot be read. This is strange, because the drive was hooked up before and worked perfectly fine. It sends me to Disk Utility and says that It must be repaired, but when I click repair, it wants me to back up anything I can (which I cannot at all, none of the files are on right now) and erase it and repair. I have no idead why it's doing this, any help?

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Library cannot be read created by a newer version of itunes

My itunes updates went haywire.  So, I uninstalled itunes.  Then read somewhere to also uninstall software update, mobile device support, bonjour, and application support.  I did all, rebooted and reinstalled Itunes.  Now I get a message that says Library cannot be read because a newer version of Itunes was installed.  If I remember correctly, the version I deleted was 2011 or 2010 not sure which.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

Can anyone help me with this problem.  I tried updating the latest itunes and it caused an error MSVCR80.dll missing.  I then tried fixing it after reading other people had the same problem and a solution was given about uninstaling itunes and the order in which to do that.  I did that but now get the error "the  files "itunes library.itl" cannot be read because it was created with a newer version of itunes.  I see a solution has been given about this but I cannot find what is suggested to enable me to follow instructions.  Can anyone please go through step by step (letting  me know where I can find what is needed) to enable me to be able tio log into itues again.  Thanks

    Hi pussygalore,
If you are having issues with iTunes after an attempted update, you may find the following article helpful:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
You may want to make sure that in the last step (reinstalling iTunes) that you are installing the latest/newest available version, and not attempting a reinstall from an older file.

I just installed iTunes on my new laptop.  When I click on the desktop icon I receive a pop up that says "The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes".  I have no idea what this means or what to do about it.  I can't even find a file on my computer like the one referred to in the pop up.  I am currently considering keeping my old laptop if it is the only way for me to continue to access iTunes.  What should I do to fix this?

What version of iTunes are you using? An .itl file is something that Windows uses, or very old versions of iTunes on Mac. The library file on Macs is now .xml and has been since late iTunes 4.
Is iTunes running ok without any problems after you OK that message? If it is, then you may be able to ignore it if you can't account for why you're getting it. But make sure you take backups in case something happens in the future.

  • Disk cannot be read from or written to

When transferring files from a Windows XP Pro system to an iPod Nano, I will get an error the gist of which is "Disk cannot be read from or written to". The error is repeatable and only occurs on certain files. The nano is connected via a USB 1.1 port through a hub. (The machine has no USB 2.0 ports.) You can load other files with no problem both before and after the error appears; but not on the file which caused the problem.
The problem smells like a firmware bug.
(Note: I tried all of the standard resets and other workarounds - updater, etc. None of that works.)
    iPod Nano   Windows XP Pro

I have been getting the same error as well. The only thing I can figure out is to restore your ipod with an older version of the updater. I fortunately had an older version on my laptop, restored it to factory default, put it back on my pc where I originally had it, opened up itunes 5.0.1 (it wanted to update it to the newer version I had on my pc but I told it no) and I have been able to save songs. I tried the advice of others to reformat my ipod with the computer management and that didn't work either. I uninstalled, reinstalled, uninstalled, reinstalled, yada yada which did nothing. The only thing I have been successful with is using an older version of the updater. I can't figure out why the newer version won't work but every time I update, I get errors like you are having. I can save files to the ipod as well as songs with the older version. I can drag and drop files to the ipod using my computer as well. Can't do that when I update to a newer version of the ipod updater. Hope this helps and if anyone has any other insight into my problem, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.

  • 2nd iPod in a row saying "Disk cannot be read from or written to." Help!

    My setup is as following:
MacBook Pro 2.16 Ghz Intel Core Duo
    Mac OS X 10.5.2
Lacie 250GB External Hard Drive attached via Firewire
    iPod Classic 160GB Black
iTunes 7.6.2 - Library has about 16,000 songs
Using the above setup, my 5th Generation iPod, my iPhone, and my iPod Nano all work just fine. My newly purchased iPod Classic however, refuses to work. Here is the story so far...
I have all of my music on my external hard drive. On the external, there is a folder entitled "iTunes." Inside of that, there are 2 folders. One entitled "Album Artwork" and on entitled "iTunes Music." The music folder contains all of the actual AAC and Mp3 files that makeup my iTunes Library. The actual library data itself, the files entitled "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Library.xml" are on my computer HD, in User>Music>iTunes. Now, I dont know why the library file is on the computer when all the music is on the external, but maybe thats just the way that works.
Anyway, I plugged in the new iPod Classic, it started to sync, and about 15 minutes in, I got a pop up box that said "iPod Sync failed. Disk cannot be read from or written to." So I did a few things to try to make it work. I reinstalled iTunes, I restored the iPod a few times. I set it to only sync music and not TV shows or Movies or Podcasts or Photos. I tried to sync it again. Nothing worked. So, thinking I had a bad iPod, I brought it to the store and swapped it out for a new one. Not a "new" one, but one from the back, so it was refurbished. I tried that. It still didn't work. So I called Apple tech support.
Tech support had me set my iPod for Manual use, and then alphabetically import songs by artists. In other words, bring over all the "A" artists, followed by the "B" artists and so on...So I did that, I got to importing a few songs by Cyndi Lauper, and it got to one song, called "Shine" and the error message came up. So I figured, there it was, the corrupted file. So I deleted it from my computer, and proceeded to go on importing manually, just in case. Well I continued for a while, and at the end of the day, there were about 100 songs that would not copy over. These were songs that worked just fine when you played them through iTunes, and worked just fine on all my other iPods.
So I manually transferred over all the songs that worked, which was about a 100 less than my full library. Along the way, instead of deleting the corrupted songs, I unchecked them. After I did the full manual transfer, I set up the iPod to an automatic sync, only syncing over songs that are checked, thinking the unchecked ones, the corrupted ones, would not even try to be transferred over and it work fine.
I was wrong. With the sync, this time it stopped on a song that was not corrupted the first time around. Not knowing what to do, I ejected my iPod, and it wouldn't eject. It said "iPod appears to be corrupt, please click restore." So I did that, thinking this would finally fix it, since the computer realized the iPod was messed up. I was wrong again. It didn't do anything, it just made it so I could eject my iPod.
So I'm now on my 2nd iPod classic. I've done what Tech Support has told me to do. Now I need help. Badly.

I had similar problems, it was a nightmare and on a 3 month ipod too!. I use a Powerbook G4 at home and a G5 at work - both were returning the same problems. so I sent it off to apple, they quickly sent it back saying there was nothing wrong with and it didn't need to be repaired. I tried it again and the same problems occurred "disc cannot be written to or read from." I could copy 20 songs onto it at the very most. A couple of guys at my work suggested updating it on a PC, then adding tunes via my mac as normal - guess what!? it works a treat!?. How ridiculous is that!? an Apple product works best on a PC. these generations of ipods are obviously designed to work best on Intel based Macs. What is wrong Apple? are you abandoning the G-generation!? still, atleast my ipod works for now - it will prove a problem when I have to update the iPod's software since I don't own a PC or an intel-based Mac.

  • TS1717 My itunes won't open and I get message that says "The file iTunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes." I am unsure what this means, but I have uninstalled and reinstalled the itunes, and it still will not

I receive the message: The file "iTunes library.itl"cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes. I do not know exactly what this means.  I have Windows 7 on my computer and was able access itunes until just recently.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes multiple times and that does not work.  Sometimes I can get in when immediately after installing, but then if I close it, i cannot get back in. Now, i can't get in at all.

That message is usually a sign that you tried to roll back to an earlier build of iTunes, but occasionally I've seen it connected to a new upgrade. This technique should fix things.

  • "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes

    Hi,
I am using Leopard (OS 10.5.8) with itunes version 10.6.3 (the highest version that Leopard will run). I accessed my Leopard itunes library from another mac in my house that was running Mountain Lion and itunes 10.7. I did this so that I could use some itunes scripts that would only run in OS 10.6 or higher. Using the Mountain Lion mac and the scripts I deleted many titles in my Leopard itunes library, and deleted many duplicate files in from my itunes library.
Now, when I try to open  itunes on my Leopard machine, I get this message:
The file “iTunes Library” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Of course, I cannot run a more current version of itunes, since I am using Leopard. I realize that I could revert to a backup of my itunes library, but that would undo all of the changes I made to my itunes library. Is there a way to edit something that would allow me to open itunes with my current library? I am not planning to upgrade the Leopard machine at this point.
    Thanks for any advice.
    -Joe

I don't know if trying to import the .xml version of the library gets around version specificity but I doubt it.
Opening iTunes with a newer version irreversibly converts the library file to that version.  You can, as you say, use the copy put in the "Previous iTunes libraries" folder when you first opened with the newer version.
