Regular glossy screen vs. Hi-Res Glossy

I was wondering if there is a notice-able difference between the two displays? Hi res glossy and regular glossy screen
I am planning on buying a 15 inch macbook pro before I go off to college.
I haven't been able to see them side-by-side because all of the apple stores that I have been to have not had the hi-res screen.
I won't be using the computer for major video/photo editing mostly entertainment movies/music/games and creating some presentations.
So if anyone has any suggestions that would be great.

MerrBear67,
Welcome to the discussions. I'm hoping when you say "hi-res screen" you are referring to the hi-res antiglare screen.  It really comes down to your personal preference and maybe the depth of your wallet.  The glossy screens are susceptible to glare.  Whereas the antiglare screens are not and hi-res antiglare screens tend to be preferred by those who do a lot of graphics, photo and video editing, and for outdoor use as well.  There was a time when you could only get the hi-res, anti-glare screen on the 17" MBP.  But Apple listened to consumers and now they offer it as a $150.00 option on the 15" MBP and a $50.00 option on the 17" MBP.
It's a shame that Apple Retail stores you've visited did not have at least one hi-res antiglare model for you to compare.  My personal prefernce is the hi-res antiglare screen.  I'm like Japamac, that is the only screen option I'll have.
Good Luck,
G-N

The same is happening for me. Today I decided to reboot my PC because it was acting up a bit, go figure, and then for some reason at the same time the PC was restarting my macbook froze. I had to do a reboot with the restart button but then all that came up was a gray background and in the middle of the screen was a darker gray folder with a white question mark in the middle of it, blinking. I can't imagine why the restart would've affected my macbook. After finding information on how to fix this, I tried all of the steps that were given about using the mac OS X disk to use the first aid utility to fix it. When using the Disk Utility option whenever I select my hardrive and am in the First Aid tab, the only button I can use is the Verify Disk Permissions. The other three buttons, and namely the most important Repair Disk button, is/are not selectable (grayed out). I then tried resetting the PRAM the way they also said with the command + option + P + R and waited for the second startup sound. After that I gave the Disk Utility a second try, but still nothing. And now if I try to just reinstall the OS completely I can't even select a destination volume on the third step (Select Destination). Apparently this means i'm SOL.

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

Both Chrome and Finder seemed to freeze, so I restarted the computer. When the restart finished, I was in recovery mode. How do I get back to my regular login screen?
It starts up and asks for a language. After English, it goes to the OS X Utilities screen. I have gone to disk utility and verified the disks. They both say they are okay. If I click repair, it comes back with an error saying "Live file system repair is not supported." I just want my computer back to normal! Please help! I am still in Mavericks if it matters.

Do you have a backup? If so, in the Recovery Partition go to Disk Utility/Erase, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled), click Option GUID, and erase the disk. Then re-install the OS. Reboot and use Setup Assistant to recover your data.

  • Accidentaly clicked on full screen, how do I go back to regular size screen?

Have full screen and can not go back to regular size screen. There is no task/tool bar in full screen. Can't even get back to desktop.

    Pressing F11 toggles full screen.

The mini-Displayport is for output only — you can't feed a signal into it. I suppose there's a chance that this ability may become available through the Thunderbolt port in the 2011 and later models, but we'll have to wait and see.

  • Kernal panics black and white text as well as regular KP screen

Bought a used Powerbook Alum 15" 1.5 mhz. Almost continually having kernal panics. Started out being just the regular ones, and could not trace it to anything special, so after DW said there were problems with the HD, installed a new one. Helped for a while, but they began again. Tried to do software update tonight and it kept killing and having KP. It's gotten so that a restart gives me a black screen and nothing else. Complete stall. After 4 or 5 tries, finally got a boot to finish. BTW, always got the processor bong, but nothing else. On a java update tonight, got the we are hanging KP. then another, which I copied in full.
KP tonight was all white text on black background, as follows. Sorry if I missed some caps:

I know this is a lot of stuff, that I know zero about, but does this mean anything to anyone? Can you suggest the next step I might take to track down the issue? TIA
    Melinda

Probably I can't be of too much help since I can't read panic logs, but here is an article on resolving kernel panics in general:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Have you tried reseating your RAM? I have heard that RAM can be a factor in kp's.
    Good luck!

  • Quality of MBP 17 (1920x1200) high-res screen at lower res (1680x1050)?

Just about to buy a 17-inch MBP and intend to generally use it at 1680x1050. But I would sometimes benefit from use (Final Cut Pro) at 1920x1200, so I'm considering the high-res option.
But I worry that the 1920x1200 native version may not be sharp at a non-native 1680x1050. I would buy the high-res version ONLY if it was equally sharp at 1680x1050. Any 1920x1200 users out there who can comment?
    Thanks much,
    Bradley

I don't need to specifically work at 1680x1050, it's just what I choose as an example because it's the native res of non high-res 17-inch screen. The issue here is that I'm a film editor who would benefit from high-res for FCP, but I'm also a writer, and I don't want to be working with text that small (not to mention just general use and the GUI) for the rest of my life. No, using larger fonts won't suffice -- I don't want to write in large type, then have to downsize when I send it out, etc. That would not work. I'd rather pass on the 1680x1050. I have big screens for most editing ...
Sounds already like the answer is that native-is-native. Expect the screen to work very well at whatever its native res is. Switching to other resolutions involves a trade off. OK. I get it.

  • Yosemite - login screen on low res

    Hello all,
i'm facing strange issue. After update to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro Retina ( Mid 2012 ) login screen appears in low-res.
I've tried changing resolution and several restarts but no luck so far. Anyone had same issue?
    Thanks for any advice.

Also experiencing this on my Late-2013 15" rMBP...it wasn't present during the early OSX 10.10 betas but has been persistent over the last few and now with the full release.
I have done a full, clean install as well to see if something was fubared in the settings but nope. What a really silly issue to have. 10.10 wasn't ready for primetime, these aren't the type of bugs that people should be experiencing.
What I can say though is that for me, this issue is limited to when i'm using an external display. If I use my laptop without anything connected externally it doesn't happen.

  • Dual screen, one normal res, one zoomed in

    Hey All,
I want to set up an additional screen and I want it to mirror what is on my main display BUT I want it to be zoomed in (similar to how things appear when u hold down ctrl and zoom in with the mouse. This way, I can tweak the more fiddly controls within Logic with ease.
Has anyone come across an app or a setting etc that might allow this to happen?
    Cheers,
    Sam

Try *Universal Access* , it is in your *System Preferences* . Not sure how it behaves with dual screens, should work though.

    OS X Mavericks Upgrade Issue
Now when I boot my iMac, a new gray screen appears for a few seconds following the Apple screen and just before the login screen.  The new screen shows several boxes with unidentifiable figures in them.  It has become annoying because it has never appeared before.   Anyone know of a way to stop this screen (of garbage) from showing?  Thanks…Larry

  • DV PAL widescreen changing to stretched 'regular' size screen

Sorry if the topic title is somewhat confusing I'll explain more clearly here.
I have uncompressed AVI footage that is PAL DV widescreen.
    Width 720 pixels
    Height 576 pixels
I take my footage into After effects CS and the footage already looks 'regular size' or pan and scan size I.E Not letterboxed.
I try a blank render (No effects) and playback the footage, it looks pan and scan. I right click properties and it gives me the aspect ratio for widescreen, but it clearly isn't.
I've imported it back in to Vegas and it clearly is the wrong ratio.
Why is after effects doing this?
I select 'new composition' and make sure it is on the option for PAL DV widescreen 720*576
Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Checked both, but still no luck.
The first pic is what it looks like coming out of After effects, the second pic is how it looks in vegas and how it should look in media player etc.
I can't use the After effects render in a movie as it switches from the top pic to the bottom and back and forth every time I want to do an effect.
If done as you suggested and even in the info box at the top left where you hilight footage, composition etc, it says W 720 x H 576.
I've managed to change the ratio in the preview/comp window and it looks how it should, but the final render is the problem now.
I've checked the rendering options and it says the same there. Still no joy.
    *****EDIT**********
O.K it looks like it might be vegas having the issues. It's screwing my aspect ratio about and fudging around the pixel size and then not doing a correct render out.
If I have any more problems I'll post back.
    Cheers

  • Tired of constant issues - Screen is low res and flickers.

    Hi..
I am so beaten down by these constant problems with my MBP. Looks like I'm going in for a third repair, again, with multiple problems. And again, not all problems will warrant their even looking at them all.
For instance, they didn't give my crooked fitting battery as much as a glance last repair, because the screen was the main issue.
Again, the screen is an issue this time. It looks like it's showing in low resolution. I know the problem is mechanical, because moving the lid will cause the screen to flicker, display lines, and eventually solve the problem temporarily once the exact right angle is found.
But why does this keep happening? It must be a crimped cable or a bad card, right? But in additon, the computer has been running hotter lateley. It seems to have a problem with high demands on video apps, even running small QT files.
And for the second time, my charge cable literally melted right through, and was about to catch fire. My computer is incredibly hot as I type this.
I think what I want to know now is: how many issues does it take before apple acknowledges a Lemon?
And, question two: suppose I want to sell this computer, do you think I would be better of with a Macbook, or even an older Powerbook? Or should I buy a nice Imac? I can't keep dealing with breaking computers, melting cables that could possibly burn down my apt. building in my absence and the downtime.
It's tiring, and an expensive maching like this should perform better. It's disappointing, especially since I switched from the PC so enthusiastically a few years ago. I really want to keep believing in Apple.
Thanks for any suggestions - I am off to the Apple store to part with my Macbook Pro for another couple of days again - third time in seven months!
    Pascal

Why not ask Applecare to replace the whole laptop ?
by the way,is your MBP a Core or Core 2 Duo?
I am currently using a Core 2 Duo MBP, it's working well(except for a defective battery )but i am happy with it.
