Regularly moving files

Hi, I'm a new Lightroom 2.3 user. So far just getting my head around it.
I've three questions here is the third one.
I plan to use one catalogue per wedding client. That is fine when I am working at my desk. All of the files will be stored on an external storage device (one which I can't move easily).
When a client comes to review images I have (to date) been using Bridge in CS2. I take the files, copy the folder to my desktop, disconnect the external storage device and take my laptop downstairs. There I connect it to the TV and display images to the clients on that. When the selection has been done (using colour labels) I then take my work upstairs again, re-connect the external device and copy files back from the laptop to the external drive.
Now I want to do the same thing with Lightroom.
How can I achieve this?
I don't mind doing import/export to a temporary catalogue on the laptop and then importing/exporting back rather than just copying files but I do want to be able to regularly move files to the laptop and move them back *preserving the new labels and so on*.
It's easy with Bridge but I'm not sure how one would do it (or something very similar!) for LR.

Jonh, don't get grumpy life is way too short.
I said that I would try your very first suggestion and I now have. I only typed a few comments in response to comments made, nothing more nothing less. In forums I like to be polite and respond not ignore help offered.
We all have our own way of working with things. You are no exception. I'm coming to LR with a well established routine based on Bridge. I'm simply trying to work out if I can modify that routine easily for LR or if I have to start from scratch. It looks like I can just modify it which is good.
There are no "banal assumptions" going on here - I came asking for advice so that I didn't start using LR in one way to find in six months time that it would be better for me in another way. Talking to quite a few LR users (not just a few on here) there has been (and continues to be) much debate over single or multiple catalogues. And I have heard people who have moved from multiple to single and others moved from single to multiple. Similarly I am not assuming that LR works the same as iView. I did wonder if the preview mechanism worked the same way which is not an unfair thought given the similarities in the tools. But I've now been told one can zoom to 100% which is all I need. I imagine that I can crop etc on the previews and that's all stored... but I need to TEST that to be sure. As for "changing goalposts" - again, no change at all. Maybe I've added information, but as I said I only got hold of the program yesterday and am trying to find out what it does.
I have now had time to try export to new catalogue, change ratings and labelling, and import from catalogue. It did what I wanted, no problem.
When I talk about "one program change" might screw things up I wasn't meaning I don't have backups. I do. They're fine. What I mean is that sometimes a programmer makes a mistake as they add a new feature/modify/fix a bug and suddenly a single database (and I'm not talking LR, or iView here I'm just talking about databases in general) becomes unstable - for example a small memory leak (not closing off handles in storage) might mean that a tool takes over all available memory on a computer causing crashes. A point-upgrade to the software might mean that working in one way or another could cause an issue. One solution to this kind of thing is to use smaller databases. That's not always a practical or desirable route to go for. Here it is possible but is it desirable? The jury appears to be out even if you've made up your mind.
My first day playing with LR says to me that I'm likely to benefit more from multiple catalogues than a single one for my work. If I were a stock shooter I might have one big one to help me find different photos. Different folks will have different needs.
Bottom line - I've tested export and import. I can disconnect the F: drive and still work with the files with my clients. Job done. Thanks for your help.

  • I moved files off my computer to an external hard drive now time machine won't back up like it used to.  It says there is not enough room.

My hard drive was completely full (mostly with pictures) so I moved several years worth of photos from the hard drive to an external hard drive I regularly use with the laptop. (Basically my master copies of all my photos back to 1997)  I have always had Time Machine set up to back up both the laptop AND that external drive.  It's always worked seamlessly until I moved those files.  Time Machine has been full for a while now and regularly gives me a message that the oldest files will be deleted.  That's fine.
I don't understand why moving files from the laptop to the external hd would now cause the following message (not an exact quote): Time Capsule cannot complete backup.  You need 233 gb to backup and time capsule only has 107 gb available. If time capsule was already set to backup up both the laptop and the external hd, why would moving those photos from one hd to the other cause a space issue?  It should equal out.   And now when I look at the files on the time capsule, it only shows me a recent backup and a partial incomplete backup.  None of the older backups are visible anymore. I have not deleted anything directly from the time capsule so I'm thinking somehow the index got damaged.  How can I fix this?  The error message says to change the settings but I really don't know what settings to change.  Help!!

It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

  • ITunes keeps moving files to wrong directory

This has happened twice now. I go to play an album and get the ! and that iTunes cannot find the files. I dig around in my MAcBook's hard drive and find a folder labeled Music Drive with about 200 randomly selected albums. I move them back to my external drive and erase the folder on my MacBook hard drive and the next day they are back again. Anybody run into this one?

I figured this out. Not sure if it's the same problem or solution for others, but definitely wanted to share what I found.
Initially I had moved the songs from my hard drive back to my computer. I have 30 Gig, so that was a pain. The problem still occurred. Then I figured it out.
I had a niece that had plugged her iPod into my computer. As a result, she had saved music onto my computer. I later found out that it was music that her friends had downloaded from the internet, etc. (Justin Bieber, etc.). Anyway, I started watched the Hard Drive where iTunes was moving files and started to watch exactly what tracks it was moving. I started to remove those from iTunes. After I felt assured I had moved those files which were being moved, I then reimported the remainder into iTunes fresh. There was something about those files that was causing problems. After I removed those offending songs, it worked just fine. I can move it back to the hard drive, etc. and it all works just fine with those songs deleted. I was able to figure it out by 1) figuring out that my niece had done this back about the time that the problem occurred 2)watching which songs were getting moved initially and starting the problem.
I hope this helps. It seems pretty isolated and may be specific to me.

  • Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original location - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it

Why does the new operating system not delete the moved files from their original locations - it seems like an enormous waste of space, time and effort to clean up every file once you've moved it - also, when transferring large amounts of files it becomes a very large problem remembering which files were transferred and which not.

You're going to need to be more specific, as I'm not quite sure I understand what you're talking about.
If you're referring to copying from an external hard drive or flash drive, and you want to actually move files rather than copy them, you can hold down the option key to force it to do a "move" rather than a "copy." This is not new behavior, though... the Mac OS has worked this way as long as I can recall (and I've been using it since 1984).
If you're having a problem with trying to move files from one place to another on a single drive causing them to be copied instead, that is likely because of some permissions issue preventing you from actually being able to move them.

You can use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner.  It will clone your HD to the external.  The format is the same as your internal drive and you can boot from it using Option key at boot time.

  • Issue in moving files from data fodler to processed folder in background

    Hi All,
I am facing one issue in moving files from data fodler to processed folder in case of background execution.
When i am executing the file in the foreground, i can move the file from Data folder to processed folder. I am using SXPG_COMMAND_EXECUTE FM to move the file from data folder to processed folder.  I can see the file in processed folder once the program is executed.
But in case of executing the same program in background, it is giving me the error "Failed to move the file to processed folder" in the spool of SM37 and i can see the file still laying in data folder.
I tried to check other programs which acesses the same folder as the above program, whether they are able to move. They are able to move the file to processed fodler successfully both in foreground and background mode.
Please help me in resolving this issue.
    Thanks,

  • Moving Files to an External Drive

I need some help.... I just bought a new external USB drive. (1 TB) and I am now wanting to move some of the bigger files (all my iTunes library, iPhoto library, and iMovie library) to the external drive. I want to do it with the littlest amount of disconnivence possible. In other words, I don't want any messages showing up telling me that it can't find the files. So I suppose what I am asking is what is the best, and easiest way to go about moving files to the drive. Thanks

if you don't want to move your entire home folder, then the easiest way to do this is by using symbolic links.
Use my [post|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7044223&#7044223] for instructions. It explains how to do it for the Documents folder but you can do the same with your Music or Movies folders.

  • Moving files from iMac to an external drive

I have a 250 gb iMac and a 1 tB external drive (Seagate). My iMac is getting quite full, so I tried moving some files to my external. It told me that I couldn't because these files needed OS X to operate. How can I move files to my external so I can clear up my iMac drive?

    Greetings,
Is the drive you are moving files to the drive you use for your Time Machine backup? If so, don't do this. Any files you put on that drive are not backed up by Time Machine (Time Machine cannot backup it's own drive. That would be like performing brain surgery on yourself.) If you are running out of space, get an additional external drive to store them on so that they can still be backed up by Time Machine.
Here are some general ideas on how to free up space: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8358.html
The most common items that people tend to have that use up all their space are iTunes (Music/Movies), iPhoto (Pictures), and iMovie (Movies).
You can move all 3 of these to an external hard drive if you like. Again, do not use your Time Machine backup drive for this purpose. That is for making a backup copy, not for holding the originals.
Once you have another drive you can move the afore mentioned large items if they are indeed taking up a large amount of space.
    iTunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
    iPhoto: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229
    iMovie: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/19555.html
    Hope that helps.

  • New External Drive connected to Time Capsule moving files problem

I have a late 2009 13" unibody MacBook Pro, that I primarily use for video editing/converting. I use my Time Capsule as a network through which I can connect to my external hard drives via USB for videos and such. I've used at least two other external hard drives along with my Time Capsule for a year and a half with very few problems, aside from the inevitable crash of one. Before yesterday, I had a 1TB Western Digital MyBook (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=210) and a 2TB Verbatim Desktop HD (http://www.verbatim.com/prod/hard-drives/desktop/usb-2.0/) connected through my 1TB Time Capsule and aside from the Verbatim drive being rather sluggish most of the time, everything was working fine.
Yesterday, I got a new external drive, an iOmega MiniMax 2TB (http://go.iomega.com/en-us/products/external-hard-drive-desktop/ultramax-minimax /minimax800/?partner=4760). I spent yesterday and most of today moving files around and whatnot through a wired connection (iOmega via firewire 800, Verbatim via USB, MyBook via USB, and Time Capsule via Ethernet), and everything moved quickly and without any problems.
I hooked my Time Capsule up to my modem, plugged in the iOmega and Verbatim drives via USB to the TC, and started my laptop. When I opened the drives, everything was working fine... And then I tried to move a file to the iOmega drive... I was moving an episode of The Killing. I dragged it into the folder and went to Safari to look something up and suddenly realized ten minutes later that I still hadn't heard the noise telling me that the file had finished. I looked at the move dialogue box and it said "156.8 MB of 323.8 MB - About 10 Seconds". I watched it for another ten minutes and it didn't move. So I clicked cancel move and the rainbow wheel of death came up and I had to force reboot my computer.
When I restarted, I opened up finder to access the drives through my Time Capsule, and it "failed to connect" to my Time Capsule. So I went back into my office to flip the switch on the surge protector in order to restart the process. I turned on my computer and I had no problem accessing my hard drives... Until I tried to move an episode of United States of Tara into the iOmega hard drive. This time, it said, "192.5 MB of 202.6 MB - About 5 Seconds" and completely stopped moving again. And the same thing happened when I clicked the little grey "x" to cancel the move.
I repeated the process several more times with no luck. Then I thought it might help to see if it does the same thing with documents. So I dragged just a random document to the iOmega and it took about 30 seconds, but it did it successfully. So I tried to move the episode of The Killing again and I let it go for, like, 25-30 minutes. After this time, I got a notification from finder saying, "Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "[the file]" can't be read or written. (Error Code -36)". Then when I went back into the "Shared" part of the sidebar to go back into my Time Capsule folder, it said "Connection Failed"
So what exactly does this mean? Are the Time Capsule and iOmega not compatible? Can I only move the files through a wired connection [which would be unfortunate]? Do I need to rejigger the USB configuration? Is the error code just for these two episodes and it's just a random coincidence that it happened the day after I got a new drive?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me!
    - Alex

I have attached the macbook to the tc via ethernet cable. Should I turn off my wireless connection or will itunes recognize to go with the faster connection on it's own?
You MBP will try to connect based on the order of the list of network devices on the System Preferences > Network window. If Ethernet is not at the top of the list, then go ahead and temporarily disable AirPort.
After all this is done will the wireless connection be fast enough for normal itunes operation?
For audio streaming it should be, but just be aware that your iTunes host will have to get the audio source wirelessly from the TC, which in turn will have to get the data from the USB hard drive. Finally, the iTunes host will have to wirelessly stream the iTunes audio via AirTunes to the AirPort Express.

  • Moving files to external drive - need Mac and PC compatibility in future

    Hello -
I'm moving a client's video files to an external drive so they have the original files. I'm moving both the DV files (always usable with program that accepts DV files) and the Mac project files in a separate folder (in case they ever work on them in a mac - includes all the referenced files). I know they won't be able to open the latter on a PC but I'd still like to include.
BUT, can they get any external drive? If I plug it into my computer and move files, are they going to run into problems if they use then on a PC? Thinking about getting this one for them (they are paying but want a good price for them):

Don't have a solution for you, but I did encounter a very similar bug.
I was moving files from one iMac's external drive to another's internal drive, using a drag'n'drop move command on a directory. The move generated an error message, maybe the same as what you saw (I'm not sure), then aborted the move. Only one small file had been moved, and the source directory was gone! Not in the trash. Mac OS X 10.4.8 on both systems, an iMac DV and an iMac 24. The external drive was formatted as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)."
This sure seems to be a basic programming mistake. So, for me, it's back to doing 3 steps: copy, verify, delete. It's lousy not to be able to rely on proper execution of a basic command, but I've never won an argument with a computer.

  • Trouble Moving Files in Dreamweaver (CS3)

    Hi,
Having a real problem maneuvering some files around.
At the moment I have my index.html file which links to a folder called 2009website, which contains 4 folders each with a mini site in.
So for instance the index file is pointing to 2009website/design/print.html
    and also
    2009website/business/clientportfolio.html
    etc, etc.
What I want to do is take those 4 mini sites outside of the 2009website folder so that my index file points to:
    design/print.html
    and
    business/clientportfolio.html
So I've moved the folders in my Files Panel and clicked "Update links" in the dialog box which seemed to work nicely. Only problem is all the images and css links within the HTML are still looking in the 2009website folder, i.e.
2009website/design/css/design.css (and there's nothing in that folder anymore)
Is there anyway I can remove the 4 folders and have the internal links update so they drop the 2009website/ and just look for the relevant folder and file?
I know it's my own fault for putting everything inside the 2009website folder when there was no real need to.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you say you updated the links and everything seems to be ok - do you see any broken links within DW design view itself?
If the files are pointing to that particular folder for the images and the css, but there is Nothing in the folders, then there is a major issue I think.
This means that the updating of the links didn't work as you expected - if the files are not in the relevant folders, but the images and css are pointing to them,  then you should be seeing broken links...
    What you could try:
Backup what you have now - so it doesn't get any messier  :-)    (hopefully you have a backup copy of the original before you starting moving files !)
If you are sure that the files are all within the root of the site and not within that 2009 folder, then maybe do a find and replace and remove the beginning of the url, so that it points to where you moved the files to.  Try it on one page and see if it makes a difference.
You could also try and move around the images folder and the css folder and see if you get a pop up with DW asking if you want to update the links and see what happens.
Another idea  - do you have an images folder defined in the site definition?
Other than that, I'm not sure what else you can do.

  • Moving files from PowerMac G3 to MacBook Pro

I have a new MacBook Pro and am moving files from all my old macs onto it. I found an old beige desktop PowerPC hard drive but don't have a monitor for it. Also, I have ancient 3.5 floppies that I need to read and the old beige computer has a slot for that. So, the question is: How do I get my files off the beige G3 and onto the new computer when the beige PowerPC has NO firewire?

One solution is to find any old crappy monitor and hook it up to the beige G3. Then you can configure it to use Ethernet, and set up a small Ethernet network with your new MacBook Pro. It is a little complicated, but not difficult.
