Reinstall and TM restore via Migration Assistan

A few days ago I got the grey folder with a question mark on it during startup. I took it to the Apple store and they told me the drive was dead. I took the computer back home, rebooted from the OS X disc and erased and reformatted the drive and did a clean install. The computer was working like new. I couldn't remember the password for my external drive with the Time Machine backup on it, so I decided to wait to restore via Migration Assistant. I finally remembered the proper username/password to the external. Everything was running well, except when MA got stuck on "Transferring files to support applications..." I found on other discussion threads that MA gets stuck when Spotlight tries to Index the external drive. This seems to be the case with me as Spotlight is continuously indexing. I tried to open System Preferences to add the external to the ignore list but I can't get SP to open. Any thoughts, please??

It sounds more like something corrupted on your Time Machine drive, possibly caused by the failure of your internal HD (it may have corrupted something, which then got backed-up).
Repair it, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

Your problem description is generalized and non-specific. I would make another appointment at the Apple store and insist they help you execute their suggested fixes.
Incidentally, if you search this site, Apple has excellent articles re: restoring a system.

Thanks to everyone who responded and related subject helped. Holding the home button and power button simultaneously for 10-15 seconds does unlock the screen. I can now use my ipad again. However, a futher problem has arisen since updating to IOS6 and activating icloud at same time, Although not sure if its related. The problem is that when connected to my PC the itunes message appears 'Cannot read ipad'. It instructs you to restore but keeps timing out after about 1 hour. This maybe internet issue but can't understand why itunes cannot read my ipad. May need to completely erase all content & reset. Or any other suggestions why this has happened?

My Tabs and Grouped Tabs were lost following reboot and not restored via History.

I closed Firefox properly and rebooted my computer. When I restarted Firefox, instead of seeing the tabs from the previous session, a window with the message that Video DownloadHelper (add on) Update 4.9.6 had been applied, and the other tabs in the open window were what appear to be my default set stored as my Home Page. All of the previous tabs and the grouped tabs that I was using (and would very much like to have back) were gone. I tried to use History>Restore Previous Session, but it was grayed out so I thought to look again and try History>Recently Closed Windows, but there was nothing available to restore either.

Step 1 would be to salvage your sessionstore files and make backup copies before exiting Firefox or making any other changes.
Open your active Firefox profile folder (personal settings folder) using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
Copy all files that start with sessionstore to a safe location such as your documents folder.
If you have not exited Firefox since this happened, try the History menu to re-open closed windows ("Previously closed windows") and within each window, to re-open closed tabs ("Previously closed tabs"). Can you get them back??
Unfortunately, by default, Firefox only stores 10 "Previously closed tabs" per window and 3 "Previously closed windows." You can find these lists on the History menu. This might be enough for most occasions, but you can increase the number stored.
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''sess''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo''' preference and enter your preferred number of windows (I have 10).
(4) Double-click the '''browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo''' preference and enter your preferred number of tabs (I have 20).
If you exited Firefox after the tabs were closed, does the sessionstore.bak file have a promising date/time stamp around that time? If you have exited and restarted Firefox multiple times, it's probably no longer possible to recover the old session data. To keep numerous sessions, you need an extension like Session Manager or Tab Mix Plus.

Reinstalled and Imported Data with Migration Assistant, What went wrong?

My MacBook HD recently went boom! After replacing it, I reinstalled the OS with the original DVD discs, a few steps later, I was offered to import data from an older computer so I plugged-in my FireWire portable disk with a CarbonCopy image of my old disk and proceeded with the import process.
After the Assistant finished, only a minor import error with Missing Sync was displayed. When the OS was completely installed, I tried opening some Office apps and Dreamweaver but none of them would open. So I tried to reinstall them but then I discovered that after the disk image from the DMG files was mounted, I was unable to open its associated finder window in order to copy or install the apps.
Does anyone knows why is this?
Also, on both the FireWire Disk and the MacBook fresh install, there are a few files and folders named Desktop-#. Why are there so many?

The FireWire disk is a backup of the original HD that went bust on my MacBook. I don't know for sure the exact version of the OS (10.4.10 maybe) but it was Tiger for sure. My Macbook is a Core Duo 13.3-inch model.
The HD inside my MacBook now, is the original Tiger version that shipped with it but I'm in the process of downloading and installing all issued updates. I re-erased all the contents again, so now my laptop is fresh again.
Any guiding-light as to how to transfer the info on the FireWire back to the laptop?
BTW I can boot my machine from the FireWire disk and its works without problems, except for the office apps that don't launch.

If itunes is comming up and saying it can't read the device because it's locked with a passcode, you may have to put your device into recovery mode first.
To put your device in recovery mode: (Following these steps will erase your device and reset everything to factory defaults)
1) press and hold the power button until you see the slide to power off option
2) swipe to power off
3) Press and hold the home button while the device is off and connect it to your computer. Continue holding the home button until you see a graphic with the iTunes logo with a picture of a USB cable below it.
4) iTunes should give you a message that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click ok and then select Restore iPhone. iTunes will download a fresh copy of iOS and then wipe the device and restore it. Depending on the speed of your computer's internet connection this may take a while. Just leave the iphone connected to your computer until it's finished.
If itunes is not detecting it at all or is Not giving you the message that the phone is locked with a passcode, you may end up having to reinstall itunes. This seems to be a fairly common problem after the most recent itunes update (11.1.5)
If this is the case and you happen to be running a windows based computer you will have to uninstall itunes in this order from your programs and features option in control panel:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support
Bonjour
Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)
Then download and reinstall itunes from itunes.com try putting your device into recovery mode again and restore.

I am trying to mnaintain my sanity when browsing and had No-Script, Request Policy and Ad Block installed and working well. I made a mistake and some malware got in there. I reformatted my drive and tried to restore via Moz backup but it will not install any add-ons in ANY version I have tried thus far.

Might be totally unrelated to the problem you're having, but saying it since it's still important: you should definitely upgrade to Firefox 3.6 asap, as 3.0.x is no longer supported by Mozilla. This means that you're no longer patched for security holes and are exposed to online threats like viruses, etc.
Upgrading is easy - just go to mozilla.com and download the latest and greatest version of Firefox. Good luck!

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

How do I reinstall and restore my iMac?

I am currently backing up the contents using disk utility of my friends iMac (I lied in the question, sorry) and I want to be sure Im doing this right. My goal is to reinstall the OS, and then restore it to the backup using the disk image. Im concerned that this may not work since the computer has multiple users, will the restore retain the user accounts and their contents?

Did you purchase them from the Mac App Store? If so you should be able to sign into your App Store account and redownload them.

I RECEIVED AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT I COULD NOT MAKE OR RECEIVE CALLS AND I HAD TO RESTORE VIA ITUNES. I HAVE DONE SO AND LOST LOADS OF APPS ETC (MY FAULT FOR NOTBACKING UP) BUT STILL UNABLE TO MAKE OR RECEIVE CALLS.

Phone is only a few months old and was working fine last night - it ran out of battery but on being charged up this morning it was effectively locked. I received an error message that I could not make or receive calls and I had to restore via itunes. I have done so and lost loads of apps etc (my fault for not backing up) but still unable to make or receive calls. Anyone had anything similar and can advise who I should contact or what I can do.

After formatting my HD and eventually restore my system from a backup on Time Capsule, will I still have access to my old backups as normally used to do via Time Machine?

That's a good question. Technically, Time Machine should make a new backup but not erase any old backups. But if there isn't sufficient space on the backup drive, then I'm not sure if Time Machine will simply warn you or just go ahead and remove old backups to make room for the new ones.
In any case, the new backup should have a different backup folder on the backup drive. That's my understanding. You can learn more at pondini.org.
