Reinstall Arch, what files to keep?

I'm thinking about reinstalling arch due to some issues with my laptop's monitor that I think are base on a software issue.
What should I save as far as configuration files etc so that I don't have to start from scratch?
I"ll be reusing the home partition so I'm just throwing stuff there in a /reinstall directory with the same dir structure as the OS.
So far this is my list:
/etc/rc.conf
~.xinitrc
/etc/network.d/* (All my wireless profiles)
/etc/ssh/ssh*config*  (ssh and sshd config)
/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
/etc/pacman.conf
I also think that I needed some tools for my wireless card in the past but research shows that my Broadcom card is now supported in the kernel.
Anything I'm missing?
I hope to turn this into a sort of topic that could be stickied if it proves useful enough to others.

You can have a look at some backup scripts that are floating around to see what other people have hardcoded in there.
If you're keeping your mirrorlist, you can keep other configs from /etc such as mkinitcpio.conf as well.
I'd keep my .vimrc, .bashrc and so on too.

  • What file(s) keep Bridge labels and ratings

Using Bridge CS4  3.0.0.464, and have lost some of the labls and ratings I had given images. I was unable to regain them
from .xmp files, or cache files, so had to get them from backed up folders of those images, though all the image files themselves
were still fine. Would be nice to know as these help me keep track of things if I'd ever lose them again. Thank you.

    Dear all,
I read this post and hope to clarify the design and ask some questions:
    Issue 1:
How to access folder 'user/app data/Roaming/adobe/bridge' that Curt Y mentioned:
Please note on Windows 7 or Vista, the folder 'AppData' is hiden by default, you can either show hiden files, folders and drives out by changing the OS folder options, or you can directly input the path '[CurrentUser]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Bridge CS5/' to enter the folder directly.
    Issue 2:
Where the Labels and Ratings are stored.
For all the XMP-supported files (e.g: include almost all the Camera Raw files, Images file, PDF, Illustrator files, InDesign files, video, audio, etc. An easy way in Bridge to know whether a file is XMP-supported file or not is to show out a property named 'Supports XMP' in metadata panel by checking on the item in Bridge Preferences -> Metadata -> File Properties -> Supports XMP), the Labels and Ratings are stored in the files themselves, or the file's sidecar file (for Camera Raw files, usually it is the .xmp file with same name of the raw file)
For all the XMP-unsupported files (e.g: folders, .txt, .doc, .xls, etc...), the Labels and Ratings are stored in the hiden file named .BridgeLabelsAndRatings which located in the same folder with the XMP-unsupported files you labeled/rated.
As I know, the file's labels and Ratings info won't be stored in the folder '[CurrentUser]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Bridge CS5/'.
    Issue 3:
    Labels and Ratings lost issue
If you copy/move files inside Bridge, either XMP-supported files or XMP-unsupported file shouldn't lost their label/rating info.
If you copy/move files outside Bridge, e.g, to copy or move them in Finder or Explorer:
    - XMP-supported files: Camera Raw files which have sidercar file
will lost label/rating info because Finder/Explorer don't know their sidecar file should be bandled with the camera raw files.
    - XMP-supported files: other files which don't have sidercar file
Shouldn't lost label/rating info because the metadata has been store in the files themselves.
    - XMP-unsupported files.
Will lost label/rating info because Finder/Explorer don't know the label/rating info is stored in the hidden file .BridgeLabelsAndRatings and won't copy/move the file together.
    Questions:
Peterimmn mentioned the label/rating lost when he saved a file, .
    - What application do you use to save the file?
    - What kind of files are you saved?
    - Are the files located on local disk?
    Thanks,
    Melissa

I am using itunes 10 and trying to consolidate my files.  I keep getting the error "Copying files failed.  The file name was invalid or too long".  How can I indentify what file is causing this problem or resolve this issue?

    BUMP
Yes, I just get that message. I don't see how I could investigate this problem.
I didn't mention that this happened when I was consolidating my library, not copying files to another computer.
In other words, I'm using a "normal" itunes procedure, itunes won't complete it, and won't tell me exactly why or how to figure out how to fix it...
Is there at least some easy way to tell which files were successfully copied to my itunes music folder so I can work on moving the uncopied files?
    Can anybody help me?

Exporting photos for UHDTV or Native 4K TV, what are the best settings ? (File: Quality File: Color Space, Image Sizing and resolution)   Or in other words; How can I get the smallest files but keep good quality for display on new UHDTV

You're welcome, and thank you for the reply.
    2) Yesterday I made the subclips with the In-Out Points and Command-U, the benefit is that I've seen the clip before naming it. Now I'm using markers, it's benefit is that I can write comment and (the later) clip name at once, the drawback is that I have to view to the next shot's beginning before knowing what the shot contains.
But now I found out that I can reconnect my clips independently to the format I converted the master clip to. I reconnected the media to the original AVI file and it worked, too! The more I work with, the more I'm sold on it... - although it doesn't seem to be able to read and use the date information within the DV AVI.
    1) Ok, I tried something similar within FCE. Just worked, but the file size still remains. Which codec settings should I use? Is the export to DV in MOV with a quality of 75% acceptable for both file size and quality? Or would be encoding as H.264 with best quality an option for archiving, knowing that I have to convert it back to DV if I (maybe) wan't to use it for editing later? Or anything else?
    Thank's in advance again,
    André

  • When combining files, conversion keeps failing with red notice that the document if password protected. What does that mean and what do I do?

When combining files, conversion keeps failing with a red notice that the document is password protected. I was combining all pdf files and had just been successful with some of the same content under a different file name. What is wrong and how do I correct it?

    Hey SUSANO,
I am sorry but you cannot combine files if they are password protected.
You can check the same under 'File > Properties> Security

My IPhoto would no longer open, I uninstalled it, and tried to reinstall it with my software reinstall drive.  A message keeps coming up, installation failed. What do I now?

If you have a copy of it backed up, restore that. If not, back up your computer, upgrade it to Mavericks, and then get the current iPhoto version. If you don't have it backed up and don't want to upgrade, go to the Mac App Store main page, click on Support under Quick Links, contact Apple, and see what they say.

  • Do macs keep a record of what files are copied to an external hard drive?

Is it possible to set up a MacBook to keep a record of what files are copied to an external hard drive?

Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
You may now be able to log in and move the files off the Desktop. Then restart as usual.

  • Clean installing OSX, what files should I keep?

    Thanks in advance for reading.
So I'm in the process of doing a "Clean Install" on my old MBP.
I'm backing up the basic documents, photos and files I need.
I use Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator. I have all sorts of fonts, patterns, special settings I've made.
Can anyone guide me as to what I should keep and where to go for it?

You cannot boot with a TM backup. It's basic function is to restore previous versions of things. A bootable backup/clone mimics your current installation and allows you to boot from it, acting just like the original. See http://pondini.org/TM/Clones.html for details.

  • Utility to keep track of what files a selected application accesses?

    Hi there!
I’m hoping to find a troubleshooting utility (or maybe set of command line instructions?) that I’ve not yet run across ...
Basically, it would allow me to +log or track what files a selected application accesses on disk+ (and perhaps when each access occurs (date/time), whether read/write, etc.).
Seems to me it could be very useful to have.
Has anyone run across anything like this?
    Many thanks!

Nevermind I found it. turns out I needed to add a "title" to that selectedCell

  • [SOLVED] System hangs on boot, reinstalling Arch doesn't help

After a recent upgrade (including the kernel), my system hangs on boot.  I have an Asus K40IN laptop, about 2 years old.  I've been running Arch for the life of the computer and never had any (serious) problems.
I booted into a live Arch environment, tried rebuilding the mkinitcpio image, didn't work.  Tried downgrading the kernel, didn't work.
I then assumed it was just some software issue that I couldn't figure out, so I reinstalled Arch.  No change.
Here's what my screen looks like when it hangs:
Any ideas would be very much appreciated.  I'm completely stumped here.

    jnguyen:
I have another arch system, a desktop, that I tend to keep pretty much in sync with my laptop.  So I can look in the logs on that system to see what was upgraded.  The other notable packages in that upgrade were probably udev, initscripts, and mkinitcpio.  I will try downgrading those.
    Leonid.I:
I'm using the 2010.05 arch release, which has kernel 2.6.33.  I see two cores in the live env, as I should, and there's nothing to suggest any problems in the logs.
I'm actually now getting a completely different hang screen:
Of course I don't know what this one means either...

  • Reinstalling arch

I screwed up arch and am reinstalling, I backed up my home folder, but is there anything else I need/shoiuld back up to make the next install easier? I have alreayd written down my programs and themes and such, but should I save my pacman and x.org configs or anything?
Also, I am backing up to a hard drive I added, it's 1 ext3 partition on a 20gig drive. How do I keep this intact while I reinstall arch on my master drive? I can't afford for any problems with the data on it, as it is very needed. Unfortunatley that's as much as I can back it up, due to it being 5 gigs and not having a cd or dvd burner or a portable hard drive. I definately intend to go get one after this though  :!:

I always back up /etc -- it makes things a lot easier.

Assuming you've used rsync or something similar, you theoretically should be cool.  I'd unplug the drive to make sure that nothing gets overwritten though - better safe than sorry.  I'm not going to go all zealot on you, since I hate people who get holier than thou about backups (and I've seen an amazing amount of this sort of zealotry) but that's really not an acceptable backup system for important data.  DVDs do a fairly good job for most desktops machines since a lot of what you have on there will be static, more or less, in any event.  You may add to your music collection over time, but there's not a lot of sense in including 20 GB of mp3s that you've already backed up to DVD in a grandfather, father, son routine.

  • SOLVED - Reinstall Arch on new thumb drive

Hello all, I'm a noob to Linux, but not afraid of command lines (old school dos guy).  I bought a pogoplug on a whim and installed using these instructions: http://archlinuxarm.org/platforms/armv5 … 2-pinkgray but I would like to reinstall arch on a new faster thumb drive and start over.  My question is how to go about this (I did google it too).  I would like to avoid bricking the pogo.  This is my thinking:
sda is the current slow, small, old thumbdrive, i plug in my new drive it would be sdb right?
    My pass at the reinstall:
Start fdisk on the USB drive:
    /sbin/fdisk /dev/sdb
At the fdisk prompt, delete old partitions and create a new one:
Type o. This will clear out any partitions on the drive.
Type p to list partitions. There should be no partitions left.
Now type n, then p for primary, 1 for the first partition on the drive, and then press ENTER, accepting default values.
    Exit by typing w.
    Now create the ext2 filesystem:
    wget http://archlinuxarm.org/os/pogoplug/mke2fs
    chmod 755 mke2fs
    ./mke2fs /dev/sdb1
    mkdir usb
    mount /dev/sdb1 usb
Download and install Arch Linux ARM:
    cd usb
    wget http://archlinuxarm.org/os/ArchLinuxARM … est.tar.gz
tar -xzvf ArchLinuxARM-armv5te-*.tar.gz  # This will take a long time
    rm ArchLinuxARM-armv5te-*.tar.gz
sync  # Takes a while when using a flash drive
Clean up, reboot, remove old thumb drive. Cross your fingers and hope for the best.
    cd ..
    umount usb
    /sbin/reboot
Once powered down, pull old thumb drive
The SSH key of your device will be different, so you need to tell Mac OS X or Linux to remove it from ~/.ssh/known_hosts before using SSH again:
    ssh-keygen -R 192.168.1.123 # Use your device's IP
Log back in after your Pogoplug reboots using username root and password root.
*whew* so am I missing a step?  Will the bootloader balk at the new drive?
    Thanks in advance

Not sure. But I think they are images and system tar in your link.
For images I would use dd (as say Ŝaran and later resize). You write all the system in the thumb drive and get a bootloader.
The second (systema tar), you get all files but you don't get bootloader.
You can do, too, what Ŝaran say. Do an image of your current system with dd. It's like clonning. Later resize your filesystem.
    dd if=old_thumb_drive of=new_thumb_drive bs=4M
    (from a third system)
Beware with dd and /dev/ (same people say that it stands for data destroyer)
*bs=4M is, generally, the block size of thumbdrives. So it takes less time to write.

Hey guys I just reinstalled Arch, card has worked fine before (M-Audio Revolution 7.1). It works fine now, too, as I have a little "welcome.wav" file that plays when I reach GDM on boot, and it plays just fine but as soon as I log in I can't get any sound. I am in the audio group:

You need to store the alsa "state" once (alsactl) before using the alsa daemon for this task.
That caused me some confusion recently as well.

  • Is there a way to see what files iTunes just synced with my iPhone?

OK, I've been working with my music files trying to find some sort of work-around to iTunes not updating or deleting my lyrics on my iPhone.  I been working on one music file at a time.  I'll make a change of some sort, then have iTunes "Sync" to my iPhone which is connected directly  to the laptop.
I've only updated ONE file, but I see iTunes syncing many files.  The first time I can see why, but I'm doing my syncing mere minutes apart, so after the first sync, I would think the only thing to be "synced" would be the one music file I just changed, but I keep seeing others.
The problem is, the list of files being synced goes by too fast to read.
Is there a way in iTunes to see a list of what files it just synced with my iPhone?
I'm using iTunes 11 on a Windows 7 Home Premium system.

What exactly does the Library item contain?
Have you thought of changing the Library item to a Server Side Include instead?
Takes all the tedium out of updating by letting the server do the mundane work for you.
Create one text file (containing the current Library item code), add a single include statement in all website pages to include the text file. Upload. The entire website is then up-to-date.
To update all affected pages in future, you merely edit the one small text file (the Include), upload and you're done.

  • What files should I transfer back to a clean install of mountain lion?

    Hi,
I have a 2.4 GHz core 2 duo running snow leopard. I want to upgrade to mountain lion but want to start with a clean install. i have everything backed up on an external hard drive. My questions are this: what files should I transfer over from 10.6.8 while leaving the old junk behind. I will reinstall only the compatible apps later.
My second question should I use migration assistant or set-up assistant? I can't seem to find the necessary tutorial that is straight forward for this.
    Any help would be appreciated.

If you're doing a clean install, which usually isn't necessary, then you want to bring over as little as possible. You can use Migration Manager in Setup Assistant to bring over your Accounts if there are no problems there. (If there are it probably accounts for the issues you're having and you'll need to troubleshoot your Home folder.)
You'll probably want to leave settings behind. Applications you already said you would install later.
The reason to run Migration Manager on the Setup Assistant is becuase after that it tends to create a second Home folder, which is not helpful.
Be sure you have a good backup before you begin.
