Reinstall Disaster Help

Bought a used ibook g4 PowerPC w/ 256 MB, 800Mhz processor, 30 GB HD. and did a complete system reinstall with OS 10.4 (Tiger). It took about a dozen tries for the installation to work and the systsem never started up right or on the first try. I figured this was becuase it needed original ibook OS software so I bought that (Panther)and did another 30 attempted reinstalls. Now I can't get it to boot at all! It tells me installations was "successful" but when on restart after installation I get a variety of non-responses. Sometimes just a gray screen with a gear, sometimes a blue screen with a spinning rainbow wheel, a few times I've actually gotten the OS Window and blue car but it stalls during the very last "login" function. Is all of this a memory issue. The harddrive seemed to be fine when the OS was running.
Any ideas...I don't want to spend any more money on this!

Do you have an up-to-date backup of your computer or at least of your Users Folder?
Although your RAM barely meets the minimum system requirements for Tiger you really should have more RAM. If you can't max it out to 1.12 GB at this time, I suggest that you have at least 512 MB.
ali brown has linked images of the correct install disks you need. As he has noted Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided since they are optimized for the computer to which they are specific and will therefore, very likely, cause problems during or after installation. On the legal side, it may be a violation of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...
At this point, to see if you can move off the dead you are in I suggest that you firstReset PRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the third time.
6. Release the keys and immediately try starting up in Safe Mode by beginning from a cold start, hit the Power button and hold down the Shift key immdeiately after the chime. If you are able to boot successfully, login, and empty Trash. Then Repair Disk Permissions
While booted from your internal HDD
Go to (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left column and First Aid in main column.
Click Repair Disk Permissions at bottom left.
Then restart and login normally.
If this does not work I suggest that you make sure you have the right disks as specified by ali brown, then make sure you have a good backup of anything you can't afford to lose, and then do a complete reformat, zero all data and re-install.

    It's not Logic that can't find them, it's your Komplete apps, though if you did exaclty as you say I can see no reason why they can't.
    Do you know where the apps installed them in the first place? I chose a non-standard locarion for mine, but I'm sure it installs sounds to your documents folder/native instruments/name of app.
    Go into the prefs of each app and choose the library location button on the library tab and point it to the relevant folder in documents/native instruments and see if that works

    i works version 9.0 in box set for leopard - family pack purchased for my son's computer.  Tried to install iwork form this and just got me unresponsive icons.  Acts like was successful, but then files won't open and iwork's "pages", "keynote" and "numbers" won't launch.

    That is a problem with Trusteer software (RapportTanzanxx.DLL).
    Make sure that you have the latest updates of your Trusteer software.

    Try to update or uninstall and reinstall Trusteer Rapport and if that doesn't help then disable/stop the program for now.

    recently, itunes decided not to open. no error message, no computer lockup, just not open. so when i tried to reinstall via add/remove programs, the installer opened, and acted normal, said it was validating install, then when it got to removing old program, it froze and a windowsey-looking error message popped up saying that "the feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavaliable" "click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'itunes.msi' in the box below" [dropdown+browse button]. the dropdown lists 2 file paths one being in the temp files in mydox and the other being in some application cache files in some system folder. neither works.
    please help! im stuck! i have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, repairing, downloading the most recent and trying to install that, and even downloading an older version, and i all get the same error message.

    with those symptoms, let's try the following procedure.
    first, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall your QuickTime. if it goes, good. if it doesn't, we'll just attend to it when we attend to itunes.
    next, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. use it to clear any existing itunes and/or QuickTime installation configuration information from the PC.

    next, use the the following document as a guide for manual removal of leftover itunes and quicktime program files:

    now try another itunes install. does it go through properly this time?

    Had issues upon updating iTunes to newest version (11).
    The display settings were not working, I tried to run it in compatibility mode for Windows 7 Service Pack 2, which i'm currently running.
    Still had major issues, couldn't click anywhere on the iTunes window, the only thing I could click was file but even then the dropdown menu wasn't working correctly.
    I tried several times to adjust my computers' settings to accomodate the new version, and still nothing worked.
    I got fed up, and uninstalled the lastest version and now I am having trouble reinstalling.
    I tried the latest version a few more times, and now when I click download on the site link, it doesn't even prompt the download window in Mozilla.
    It doesn't create a location anywhere within my computer either.
    I downloaded 10.7 in hopes of that maybe working, I figured because I haven't updated the iOS on my phone, and my computer is still a little behind that this might help, but it says,
    "itunes library.itl cannot be read" and something to do with having a new version of the file already.
    I just want to have some version of itunes on here, I still have Bonjour, though I think with the issues I am having the Software update must be gone along with any itunes program I previously had.
    I cannot restore any previous versions because I haven't backed it up on to anything for quite some time.
    I just want to manage my iPhone 4 again, and this is driving me nuts.

    The Problem is resolved by :
    Click on the "Start" button. Click "Run." Type the word "cmd" in the open box. When the DOS screen comes up, type "netsh winsock reset." Press "Enter." Type "exit" to close the DOS window and go back to Windows.
    Restart the computer.

    Try CMD+R. That will restore the latest version you were running.

  • Lost all my photos after back up & reinstall-PLS HELP

    Hello There,
    i have a very serious problem, the problem is as below:
    - my system was having a problem so I was asked by apple store guy in Zürich to reinstall my OS
    - everything in iphoto was fine before that
    - after reinstall, the following problems started:
    a) photos thumbnails didnt enlarge & only a black circle with "!" mark came up. Videos dont play at all.
    b) the photos stopped syncing to my iphone or ipad
    c) even after rebuilding the iphoto library database (as adviced by genius bar guy), the problem didnt go away.
    d) this problem also happened with the new photos imported into iphotos from my camera/sd card or iphone
    e) the guys at the genius bar had no idea about this problem.
    Now genius bar found out that my hard disk had a problem so they asked me to back up & reinstall my OS (snow leopard) for the 3rd time so they could change my hard disk
    I did this, got my hard disk replaced & now I am restoring my system from time machine. I have the following problems.
    - all the photos imported after this problem started didnt seem to have been backed up by time machine so they are simply missing.
    - my old hard disk has been destroyed by genius bar so I have no back up any sort of my photos.
    i have been going to the apple store about 5-6 time over 6 months now & they offer no solution except telling me too bad for me that I lost my family & children photos. All was fine until genius bar guy told me to back up & reinstall my system. I had requested him to help me out the very first time during the back up & reinstall but they have always told me they have only 20 mins for every client so I have to do it myself.
    I am very sad at the moment. I have lost all my photos including work & my children since they were born. its very serious for me & i am totally depressed at the moment.
    is there a way to recover the photos & videos?? I have read a lot of your forums & even tried iphoto library manager.
    this is a desperate cry for help!!! this is my first mac & i now start to regret the day i bought it.

    I just updated 3gs with ios5, using a pc.  Photos and videos are not showing up in camera roll, In tunes the capacity bar of colors showed nothing in video or photo, but lots of memory in yello part of bar named other. I suspected that this was all my photos and videos.
    Downloaded this windows browser, worked for me.

    Check if any of the entries as specified in the above article is still remaining behind on your machine, if yes, remove them all. Then make sure that the installer files are all intact. If you have a DVD, try copying all the content of the installer folder to dekstop and then running the Setup.exe from that desktop folder location.

  • Quit Midway Through OSX Reinstall. HELP!

    So I had to reinstall my Mac Mini's OSX after it got caught in an endless reboot cycle. I ran diskutil from the start up CD and erased my hard drive. Then I proceeded to install. Midway through however, the progress stopped and after 30 minutes, I decided to try and quit the install with hopes of starting over after I rebooted. Unfortunately, now when I reboot and hold C to try to reinstall the Mac OS, all I get is a blank blue screen! What can I do? My Mac Mini simply will not read the CD anymore.

    There are many different things that can be done and several different reasons for the hang. First, can you hear the CD spin up at all? Try to reboot the machine and hold the "left click" on your mouse to eject the disk. Re-insert the disk and try holding C again. If that doesn't work, press and hold the Option key and try to select your disk that way. Try those first and see what happens. Also check these links out for some insight into what's going on. If your disk is 10.3 as in your info, use the first link. If you're using 10.5 use the second. Hope this helps you out!

  • Lion Server upgrade disaster, help restoring Dovecot.

    Hi,
    I tried to upgrade the Snow Leopard Server running in my Mac Mini to Lion Server, it was a complete disaster.
    I made a Carbon Copy Clone of the hard drive as my backup before performing the upgrade, bottom line is that I went back and re-installed Snow Leopard Server and glad that it's all back up and running as before. The only thing left for me to do is to restore all the emails that was on the backup drive to the main drive.
    I tried googling this and didn't get any straight forward answer, how do I restore all the emails from the backup drive to the main drive?
    Any help would be highly appreciated.

    we're just finishing migration to Exchange 2013 and found some Outlook 2013 clients (migrated from Exchange 2010) can't communicate with Exchange 2013. even if i recreate the Outlook profile.
    what worked is to reinstall Office 2013. i will also be posting in the Office 2013 forum just want to get ideas why a reinstall fixed the problem.

    Try the below steps to identify connectivity issue on the Outlook user profile.
    To perform the procedure in this topic, confirm that you have started Outlook.
    Procedure
    To view established connections in Outlook
    Press the CTRL key and right-click the Outlook icon in the notification area.
    Select Connection Status.
    In the Exchange Server Connection Status window, you can view information about the current connections Outlook has established to the Exchange server. The following figure shows the Exchange Server Connection Status window.

    Launch Outlook, hold Ctrl key and right-click the Outlook system tray icon. You will see two new options in the context menu, i.e;
    Connection Status and Test E-mail Auto Configuration.
    Click Test E-mail AutoConfiguration to verify and check the email server configuration.
    Try Changing Proxy Authentication Settings:
    NTLM\BASIC\Negotiate
    Open Outlook->File> In the account settings dialog, press on More Settings… and then select the Connection tab. At the bottom you’ll find the button for Exchange Proxy Settings.

    While you could try to change the authentication from Basic to NTML, usually it will result in you not being able to connect to the Exchange server anymore. This is because the Exchange server is most likely configured to use Basic Authentication only. You

  • ITunes crashes on launch - Reinstall not helping

    I'm stumped.
    About a week or two back, iTunes stopped working, upon starting up it would promptly stop responding & Windows would close it (with the "iTunes has stopped working" pop up).
    It will then sit & keep my HDD busy for the next minute or two before finally letting my system carry on without lag.
    I've tried uninstalling it & starting a fresh, no joys, I've even tried uninstalling all Apple Software on my machine, & also clearing up any old preference files that it leaves behind. But still no joy. I'm out of ideas... I think I've tried most of the suggestions in the support section of the site. Should probably say I tried it on another user account on my machine & the same thing happened. Post-reinstall it does last slightly longer, but only by about 30seconds, & it doesn't let me do anything as it's too busy trying to create a library..
    I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium, 32-bit version.
    Any thoughts will be most welcome...

    ShapeShifter is only installed on the account that doesn't crash. I tried disabling ApplicationEnhancer, and that didn't help. Maybe uninstalling ShapeShifter completely from the system would help.
