Reinstall Leopard from Terminal

What is the process in order to reinstall Leopard from Terminal? When I start up my computer, I get the frozen blue screen. When I start in safe mode, I'm able to insert the install DVD and click re-start, but when I re-start, it winds up back at the frozen blue screen. I'm thinking that the way to get around this is to try to start the computer in Terminal, type in the command prompt to reinstall and, well... hopefully Bob's yer uncle. Can anyone help with this? Am I deluded? Anybody got any better ideas?

My wife's G5 iMac had similar problems and replacing the capacitors on the motherboard with Jim Warholic's capacitor kit actually fixed the problem. I was as surprised as anyone that it worked, but it did.
Now, six months later I started having power supply problems and sure enough there were some iffy capacitors on the power supply board. But my luck wasn't so good trying to fix that problem, so I ended up buying a new power supply.
Just a thought.

Boot Camp wont Partition- Worried about reinstalling Leopard from backup

Hello, I have been unable to create a partition through Boot Camp on my HD so that I can install Windows 7. I keep getting the error message: Cannot be partitioned because some of the files cannot be removed. I have ran Disk Utility and verified and repaired permissions, as well as verify and repair disk. I also ran disk utility via booting from the Leopard install disk. I have Onyx and ran all maintenance/cleaning options. So after researching it seems that the only solution is to backup with Time Machine, reinstall the OS and restore from the backup. If I do this, what is going to happen to all of my 3rd party applications/settings? Will the time machine backup save EVERYTHING and bring my MBP back to its identical state before the reinstallation, or will I have to reinstall all of my 3rd party applications (logic studio, Reason, Ableton Live, etc..)???

Try iDefrag (www.coriolis-systems.com/iDefrag.php). I was having the same issue and before backing up and restoring I tried defragging the drive (first time ever). It comes with a utility to create a boot disk and after running its process I was able to create a new partition through Boot Camp.
Back up your data first just in case anyway. I had no problems at all but you never know what might happen.

How to reinstall Leopard from another source than the install disk?

Hi there. Great forum full of information but I somehow could not find the answer to my problem.
I own a MacBook Pro and for some reason, the Optical drive refuses to read DVD and CD. It still accepts blank CD and does write....strange.
I can live with that, but what will I do if and when my Mac needs access to the install disk that came with it?
Today I partitioned an external Lacie HD with the intention of installing OS Leopard on it. I thought this would be an ideal solution as a back up strategy. Files in one volume, OS in another.
I have copied the content of both install disks on my desk top through firewire using my good lady's macbook (tiger) but when I click on the install icon, I get a negative message.

You must be sure the drive is partitioned GUID or it will not boot a computer from the cloned installer disc.
You may want to consider getting a flash drive. An 8 GB flash drive will hold the OS X installer and a 16 GB one will hold the installer and Disc 2 (need to partition the flash drive.) Take care what brand you buy. Some don't work too well for booting Macs. I've had good success with PNYs. Prep them as follows:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
The above works, also, for external hard drives.

Question about reinstalling leopard from a multi-user disc.

I upgraded to leopard and my my pro tools recording setup ceases to work, so i need to downgrade to tiger for a while until Digidesign supports Leopard. My problem lies in the fact that me and my buddies bought the five user pack, now... if i try to install the disc again when it is supported, will I run into problems being able to install it, or will my computer somehow already be registered as having used the disc before? AND I lost my tiger disc, so is it possible to use someone else's tiger disc to downgrade, or can I do it without a disc?

The Mac OS X client installation package does not contain any copyright protection mechanism, such as serial number verification or machine tracking.

Unable to install Leopard from install disc

My MacBook stopped booting recently due to a "INvalid Sibling Link" error and I decided to reinstall Leopard from the installation disc. I booted using it but I get an error saying "Leopard cannot be installed on this computer."
THe log says
"Installation checks failed.
Installation check failures: This software cannot be installed on this computer."
Apple's help says that I need to update my firmware but my laptop came installed with Leopard. Why is it not installing now?

Possibly:
1. You need to reformat the hard drive.
2. You are trying to install when an existing version is on the drive.
Before you reinstall OS X do this:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.

URGENT Trying to wipe and reinstall Leopard 10.5 on my 2008 imac8,1 from the disk but my hard drive doesn't show up

So to give a little big of a background on my computer. I got it January 2009 as a graduation gift, because I was going to get a degree in Graphic Design and Animation. I only worked on it [mostly brousing the web, and itunes] for about 6 months because I was taking all of my general courses for college. I then met my boyfriend [late 2009] and moved in with him, my boyfriend has a macbook so I left my mac at my parents house. I was only Using it every now and then and it would be idle/ or shut off the rest of the time.
Fast forward to fall 2011. Me and my boyfriend live in a condo so I brought my computer over because I am now taking graphic design courses and need my computer. I installed a free 30 day trial of adobe cs5.5. It made my computer kind of slow and it froze alot even though I still have over 250gb's of memory in it. After the trial ended I kind of stoped using my computer again, rather installing the free trials of cs5.5 on my mom and my boyfriends macs until I had enought money saved up to buy it.
Here's where it gets tricky.
So now its March 2012 and I tried uninstalling the trial of cs5.5 on my computer since it was just taking up un needed space. I had to uninstall all of the programs one at a time other wise it would freeze up. I have had to hold the power button down to get it to turn off because i couldn't even move the mouse even after waiting a while. Anyhow I get to the last program and it keeps freezing, I tried shutting down my computer via<apple< shut down. But when I start it up again I got a file with a question mark flashing on my screen. So I looked up how to fix that and had to locate where to start up [I selected my hard drive] then I was able to get on to my computer.
So then I go to disk utilitys and do a repair on my internal hard drive to fix if there were any messed up files. After the files are repaired I figure I'll restart it and let everything get up to date. When I do I get the gray screen with the apple and the spinning wheel. This happens OVER and OVER. I tried soft reseting it, manually turning off the computer, you name it. But it still keeps happening. So I figure I'll just wipe it clean and reinstall the whole thing. [I have it backed up on an external drive]
I try to reinstall leopard 10.5 from the disk that came with my computer, all goes well until I gets to the 3rd screen where you select where to save it to, my hard drive doesn't show up. But if I connect my external hard drive it shows up right away. I try seeing if it pops up on disk utility, and it doesn't show up there either.
Is it possible that my hard drive is shot? I haven't really used my computer that much. Its pretty much sat at my parents house for 2 of the 3 years I've had it. So its not like I used it a whole lot.

The battery alone is a $5 to $15 part. Hard drives vary in cost, and depending on the iMac, they may or may not be able to install a third party hard drive, or one resold through Apple. How do I reinstall my Snow Leopard os into my mac pro from my mac book pro? I have the disks, both run on Snow Leopard. I am have a grey screen problem and nothing has fixed it yet, so I was told to reinstall in from another computer because when I tried to load from disk to mac pro the mac pro would start to load, but then stop at the same place.

Once you get it to work, be sure to download and apply the lastest SL COMBO updater. for 10.6.8 (or any later version). This will ensure that the latest drivers & such for that newer hardware gets installed and the resulting OS can run optimally.

If you have Leopard installed, you can't download anything to get to Snow Leopard.
In order to do that you must have a Snow Leopard DVD.

keep in mid that archive and install downgrade suggested above doesn't give you the option to preserve users settings. this means that you'll have to go through account setup again. You old home directory should be buried somewhere in the previous system folder (see this [link|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107297]).

If you have an Intel Mac, OS 9 (Classic) won't work in Tiger, either.

i have a big problem :s
wanted to restore and getting "Restore Failure Could not find any scan information... then i've followed some terminal commands..finished restoring and couldn't boot cause i only find Macintosh HD when i use "alt option" when i restart my macbook pro and even if i go to "startup Disk" i can find my partition of the external hard drive but when i click on it nd do retart it's can't boot ...another thing is tht m having a slow start and it's ask for my Password (i've no problem with password it just doesn't ask me to enter it before and i have internet and server failure)
Due to terminal commands?? :((

* Launch Disk Utility
* Select the External Firewire/USB device that you want to use as the boot drive for the upgrade
* Click “Partition” from the menu options
* Select 1 Partition, then click “Options” below the partition scheme
* Select the top option for “GUID Partition Table” – it MUST be GUID to be bootable!
* Click OK to create the GUID partition (this will reformat the drive, ie: all data is lost)
* Next, click the “Restore” tab within Disk Utility
* Select your newly made Snow Leopard 10.6 Install DVD image and restore this image to the GUID partition you just created OR…
* Alternatively, you can select the Snow Leopard Install DVD and restore directly from the DVD to the GUID partition
* After the restoration is complete, your GUID partition will now be bootable by Mac OS X!
* Reboot the Mac holding down the “Option” key to pull up the boot loader, select the Snow Leopard install drive you just created rather than your default Mac OS hard drive
* Install Snow Leopard as usual!

Hello, it's great you have a backup, but 10.6 should just Install 10.6 system files over the top of 10.5 system files, & leave all your data intact on the drive.

Reinstalling Leopard and cleaning hard but can't reload operating system.

In preparation for sale, i'm cleaning off all my data from my G5 and reinstalling Leopard OS.
Every time I insert the original OS Leopard install CD and try and re-boot the computer gos into the start up screen (Apple logo displayed) but just freezes then the CPU fans slowly start to blow harder and harder until my mac sounds like jet aircraft on afterburn. After 20minutes I have to force crash and restart. Without the start-up CD the mac boots up fine and run perfectly.
Any idea what I can launch the start-up OS to reinstall and wipe the HD?

If you have been trying to get it to boot from the installer DVD by holding
the C key down on startup, with the disc in the optical drive, perhaps it
may work to use the Option key held down on start up with disc in drive.
+{The original system disc may be able to cope with the firmware setup+
+on the computer, even though it may have been updated over time.+
+So, that machine-specific install-restore disc may be the key.}+
Another way may be to see if the installed system's own Startup Disk
control pane in System Preferences can select the inserted DVD as a
boot volume and then choose to start the G5 from that DVD, then.
There may also be some other issue behind this problematic situation;
and perhaps to reset the PRAM/NVRAM may do something voodoo to
help it get a move on. However, this topic has come up in the forums
and has affected a few different models under odd circumstances. So
some topic like it should exist in the Discussions, and be searchable.
There is also an Open Firmware reset that involves starting in single
user mode to enter command line text and so on, to reset NVRAM:
• reset the NVRAM (non volitile RAM)
Here is how to do it (from OWC):
To boot into Open Firmware, shut down your Mac, then start it up while holding down the
Command, Option, O and F keys. At the prompt, enter the following commands (you may
want to write them down on a piece of paper before beginning this process), pressing the
return key after each:
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset-all
After which your Mac will restart.
Edit: Actually, on a re-read, (confirm before trying) there are a few mis-steps in the
above; so check that out. I have seen where this path is more likely, along with above...
+as soon as you turn on your machine and you here the chime, hold down command S,+
+this will take to the terminal.+
+then type:+
/sbin/fsck -fy
If it tells you *** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED ***, type the above again, until it says:
** The volume (nameofvolume) appears to be OK * (where name is probably Macintosh_HD)
When that is done, type reboot and you should be good.
