Reinstall Lion w/ Win7 in Bootcamp

Last summer I bought a MacBook which had upgraded to OS X Lion. On that computer I installed Windows 7 via BootCamp.
After I bought the MacBook I decided to upgrade my MacBook Pro to Lion as well so I contacted Apple and got it dowloaded in AppStore.
Now I want to reinstall Lion on that computer.
Can I download Lion from my personal account in AppStore on my MacBook and install?
And will that affect the BootCamp partion?

While nothing should to happen to the Windows partition, that of course isn't the same as can't. Backing it up isn't hard, but it also isn't free. Winclone is only $20 and works very well. You backup and restore your Windows partition right from within OS X.
After you have a Windows backup, you're ready to continue with OS X. Since you purchased Lion separately, then I'm assuming your Mac came with Snow Leopard. You can either do an erase and install with Snow Leopard, followed by Lion over it, or do the following. The same instructions work for Lion.
Mountain Lion is not available from Apple in any form other than a download. Once you've purchased and downloaded ML, you can stop the installation the moment it starts by quitting the same way you would any other app. The ML installer will remain on your hard drive in the Applications folder. From there, you can make your own bootable Mountain Lion flash drive installer.
1) Right click on the installer and choose "Show Package Contents".
2) A folder will open on the desktop. Drill down to Contents > SharedSupport and double click the disk image InstallESD.dmg to mount it on the desktop.
3) From here you can either burn a DVD, or copy the contents to a flash drive. Personally, I would strongly suggest using an 8 GB flash drive formatted as Mac OS Extended. You will be able to boot to it in about 30 seconds instead of at least 10 minutes off of a DVD, and it will install MUCH faster. Make sure the flash drive is empty, or you've copied anything off it it you need as it will need to be erased.
4) Don't just drag and drop the contents you see in the open disk image to the flash drive. It won't boot that way as it will be missing some hidden files. Open Disk Utility. You will see something similar to this:
5) To accomplish the above, highlight either the flash drive's single partition (as I did), or the item at the bottom (Mac OS X Install ESD), which is what you will see with the Mountain Lion disk image mounted. It doesn't matter which one you pick. You'll then have the option to select the Restore tab towards the upper right. Drag and drop from the left column into the Source and Destination fields as shown above. If you've already erased the flash drive, you can uncheck the box. Click the Restore button.
You've just made your own bootable Mountain Lion USB Flash drive installer
The advantage here is that you can boot to the Lion flash drive made and skip install Snow Leopard entirely. You'll be able to do an erase and install of the OS X partition directly to Lion.

  • I installed two OS in Macpro-Lion and Win7, but I only can select Lion as the default system in the reference setting, how to find icon of win7 in reference setting again?

As captioned, I installed Lion first and then set up the win7 with bootcamp. At the beginning, the defualt system is Win7, I changed as the Lion as the default system in system reference setting. The procedure as follows:
    1. Click the system reference setting
    2. In the system tool select "Boot Disk", but I only find Macintosh HD Max OS 10.7, no icon for windows 7.
The point is that if I want to change the win7 as the default boot system, what I can do since no icon for selection.

    Hi,
When you power on your MacBook, hold down the Alt key and you will be given the option of which OS you want to boot into.

  • How to Backup your HD and Reinstall Lion

    Hello to all,
I'm a Student of Informatic Engineering studiying at UCAB in Venezuela.
I have a Macbook Pro 13" late 2011 and needed of windows and ubuntu because some projects at University needed to be developed in those OS. I did the Bootcamp to add Windows to my MacBook Pro, and did an extra partition to the Macintosh HD to install the Ubuntu. All Sucess and finished the semester. Now i dont need these OS no more because i won an Acer and now i have Windows and Ubuntu in that laptop so i want my Mac only with OSX. Besides now the OSX is startint to act funny, so i think its about the triple partition (and i dont like my apps in OSX closing for no reason, and the system is getting a bit slow).
    So, my question is:
1.- How do i Backup my Macintosh HD so i dont lose all my installed apps and data.
2.- Can i use Time Machine on any External Hard Drive?
3.- How do i clear all my hd so its like brand new, and Reinstall Lion (because when i bought the Mac it didnt came with an OS CD)
Thanks for any help you may bring me..
I'm Sorry for any misspelled word, English is not my main Language.

    1. Use Time Machine - it's on your Mac.
    2. Yes - if the external has enough space.
    3. After you back up, use the steps described in this Macworld article to make a clean install of OS X. Basically you reboot while holding down the command and R keys and proceed from there.

  • Problem installing win7 in bootcamp via usb

Hi, I switched my early 2011 MBP's superdrive with a Corsair SSD a couple of months ago and managed to install windows 7 on it with a usb key and bootcamp using the VMWare method (A long and tricky process, but it worked). Everything was working well until some system files on my win7 drive were damaged (Impossible to launch the wlan service, frequent random freezes, etc.). I tried to repair the system install but wasn't able to do so (Impossible to repair on boot since I have no DVD drive and my system restore option was unabled for disk space reasons...). I then tried to reinstall (overwrite) windows 7 via bootcamp (I created a new win7 install usb stick, then tried to reinstall it at boot but it said something like "No installation disc found, please insert the win7 install dvd and press any key", in other words, windows boot utility wasn't able to see my usb stick).
Now, my situation is the following: I managed to boot back on OSX, I see my second SSD but it's now empty and formatted as "BOOTCAMP" (not a problem since I want to reinstall win7 completely).
Is there any way I could still make a fresh win7 install via USB on that SSD drive or is it easier if I just remove the second SSD from my MBP and install win7 on it by connecting it to my PC...?
    Thank you,
    Jean.

  • Reinstalling Lion OS to clear 2nd partition..

    I bought a used IMAC.
It has 2 other partitions taking up 800GB of the HD.
Disk Utility says it appears to be a Bootcamp partition and will not let me change it.
Bootcamp is giving me the error message "Boot Camp Assistant cannot be used. This startup disk is not supported"
    So,
Can I just reinstall the OS from Recovery and reformat the drive and get rid of the other partition in the process??
    Thanks,
    MK

    If it's running Lion:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Lion and snow leopard bootcamp, after installing lion snow leopard bootcamp with windows 7 does not boot

Just installed Lion OS  on my 2nd mac (on the 1st without an issue) but as I had a partition with windows 7 (installed with Snow Leopard bootcamp).
It seems that Lion OS renamed the Bootcamp partition but I am not able to rename it through OS.
Is there a solution for this or do I need to re-install?
    Many thanks for your help

Hi Jack.........ok ive managed to create a link to that video on how to install bootcamp.....this is the tutorial i used and i managed to gain 100% completion on bootcamp 1st time no messing......like i said in my previous reply did you save the windows support files from apple....(Critical).....ok no point in messing about i suggest you start again from scratch........these are the things i used and YOU will need to complete bootcamp
mem stick or cd-r / dvd-r......original copy disc of win 7 ...i never used an iso i used original disc....allow a minimum of 30gb of space for your win 7 partition.....if you want bootcamp so you can use big programs like windows based games i.e.....Crysis/Call of duty etc etc ..then you will need to consider that  you will need to allow a bigger partition to allow your HD to store the files.....this is the reason i installed bootcamp and so i made my partition    i have a 750GB HD so i made a partition of 300gb for windows 7 and left the other 450gb for Mac....so you need to partition enough for what you want bootcamp for remember once you get bootcamp working you will need to install ALL Important Windows updates Including Win 7 SP1......once everything is installed you will have bootcamp up and running lovely.....u can then boot up with either win7 or mac......click this link and watch carefully and do exactly as shown ok and you should be fine...if you have any probs contact me again ok.....let me know how you get on ok..:)...http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=fvwp&v=QFIWtXTl4d0&NR=1

  • Problems reinstalling Lion from Recovery service

I'm trying to reinstall Lion from the Apple Recovery service but keep getting told after 10 hours downloading, that installation has failed.
I'm having to do this as my machine crashed a few days ago and lost access to the operating system. I did not loose files as the machine was Bootcamped and i could access from there.
Initially, I was told that the hard drive needed repairing, which has now happened and it's passed all it's tests via the Disk Utility but still no installation.
I tried booting from a usb and the download recovery but no sucess.
    Can anyone advise.

    Yes, exactly.
I think that OS X Internet Recovery would be necessary only if you were to attempt a Lion installation with a completely empty HD, implying that even a Recovery partition has not been created. Your USB flash drive is the way to cope in that circumstance. If you can install Lion by booting the recovery partition as you described, it seems to me that it is all that is necessary and there is nothing to fix, despite the error message you see.
I'm surprised that Internet Recovery works at all, given that your Mac is not one of those allegedly eligible to use it.
Without a similar 2006 iMac to test, I can only speculate that the "abysmal distribution system" as baltwo describes it just doesn't work well with earlier Macs, and that Apple may not have tested it extensively with them. If I were you I would rely upon that USB installer much more than OS X Recovery or OS X Internet Recovery. I prefer not to rely upon any installation method that can possibly result in "the server is not available at this time" or such nonsense, but that is the direction in which Apple has been going for a long time.
An OS X installation log exists at /var/log/ that you can examine using Console, probably named "install.log". Deciphering it is another challenge.

trying to install win7 over bootcamp with usb flash drive, the partition is not accepted under windows although its formatted ntfs, there is shown a faillure which could be read in the logs of win install but i don't find them. Tried at least five times to reinstall / reformat

  • Reinstall Lion!!! :D

I deleted the Recovery HD to get Bootcamp to work (and it did but let's not discuss this).
Now I want Recovery HD back, so I think I have to reinstall Lion. Will reinstalling Lion from a Recovery HD burned to a DVD delete my files? This website seems to say no. I wanted to know your professional opinion before I dive in.
Anyone with any experience of reinstalling Lion from Recovery HD?

Here are the steps, if you feel good about following them, that will recreate the Recovery HD for Lion 10.7.2 without reinstalling Lion. This procedure works as I used it this past weekend.
If the Recovery HD is corrupted, perform the following before rebuilding it.
    Delete corrupted Recovery HD
    Open Terminal
    Type diskutil list
Note the Identifier for the Macintosh HD and Recovery HD (for mine it's disk0s2, disk0s3)
    Type:
    diskutil eraseVolume HFS+ ErasedDisk /dev/disk0s3
Merge the free space with theMacintosh HD
    diskutil mergePartitions HFS+ MacHD disk0s2 disk0s3
    Rebuild the Recovery HD partition
Download the Lion Recovery Update for 10.7.2 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1464)
The downloaded file will be placed in the \user\Downloads folder
    Open Terminal
    Type:
    hdiutil attach Downloads/RecoveryHDUpdate.dmg
    pkgutil --expand  /VolumesMac\  OS\  X\  Lion\  Recovery\  HD\ Update/RecoveryHDUpdate.pkg /tmp/RecoveryHDUpdate
    hdiutil attach /tmp/RecoveryHDUpdate/RecoveryHDUpdate.pkg/RecoveryHDMeta.dmg
    /tmp/RecoveryHDUpdate/RecoveryHDUpdate.pkg/Scripts/Tools/dmtest  ensureRecoveryPartition  /
    /Volumes/Recovery\  HD\  Update/BaseSystem.dmg  0  0  /Volumes/Recovery\  HD\
    Update/BaseSystem.chunklist
Code will display and at the end it should read Creating recovery partition: finished
Clean up and make the system recognize the updated recovery partition
    Type:
    hdiutil eject /Volumes/Recovery\  HD\  Update
    hdiutil eject /Volumes/Mac\  OS\  X\  Lion\  Recovery\  HD\  Update
    sudo touch /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
    Password: (enter your password)
    sudo kextcache  -f  -u  /
Type diskutil list to verify the Recovery HD is there.
Restart system and verify you can boot into the Recovery HD.
Once inside the Recovery HD, open Terminal and type sw_vers
    Information displayed should be:
    ProductName: Mac OS X
    ProductVersion: 10.7.2
    BildVersion: 11C74

  • Reinstall Lion, Couldn't unmount disc

Trying to repartition my hard drive from current 80 gb osx and 80gb bootcamp back to 160gb osx. Keep getting error "couldn't unmount disc". I expect this might be because it can't unmount lion software, else there's no way to reinstall lion. Any ideas how to reformat back to 1 partition?

I was working from Disk Utility at Lion Reovery and it's having the same issue. I can verify disk permission for both my Mac side and Bootcamp side.
    Verifying volume "Lightweight150"
= The volume Lightweight150 apears to be OK.
    Verifying volume "BOOTCAMP"
= the volume "BOOTCAMP" appears to be OK.
    Verify and Repair volume "BOOTCAMP"
= the volume BOOTCAMP appears to be OK.
         volume repair complete.
updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.
The volume "Lightweight150" won't let me Repair Disk although I can Repair Disk Permission, which goes like this..
    Repairing permissions for "Lightweight150"
    Permissions repair complete
Nonetheless, it still won't let me repartition my 160.04 GB FUJITSU MYH2160BH Media drive to only one partition, Name: Lightweight150, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled), Size 160 GB
    Any more suggestions?
p.s. I believe you sold me my iphone at the UWS apple store this past Monday night. Thank you and so you know, I made it to my Finnish Party.

  • Installed Win7 in bootcamp, now I'm stuck in Windows.

So after I did my win 7 install I cant get back to OSX, so I ened up reinstalling Lion, was there a better way that I missed?

The OPTION key should have, and of course - a bit of research before beginning.
Most things are in Boot Camp Assistant Guide for before you even start (Assistant even recommends printing out the 28 page guide first) http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
THAT page should be or is a MUST for reading and checking (most products do have just such a support page as in www.apple.com/support/ + "name" )

  • How to reinstall Windows 8.1 on Bootcamp?

I am trying to reinstall Window 8.1 on Bootcamp after Disk Utility reported that the hard drive it was originally located on was failing and needed to be replaced. I did so. Now when Windows 8.1 installer launches, it thinks I'm doing an upgrade and insists that I "reboot Windows Normally" and then launch the Installer, which is impossible because it's freshly formatted, NEW hard drive.
Here are the steps that I followed:
    1) Disk Utility reports that Boot Camp drive is failing and replace it.
    2) Remove failing hard disk, replace with new one.
    3) Launch Bootcamp Assistant.
    4) Download support drives to USB stick.
    5) Begin install process using same Windows disk (64-bit FULL VERSION) used previously.
    6) Windows Installer asks for Product Key.
    7) I enter product key.
    8) WIndows asks to agree to license terms.
    9) Setup presents ONLY two choices:
         Upgrade Installation
         Custom Installation
    10) I choose Upgrade.
    11) Windows Setup reports that Upgrade can only take place from Windows environment, to eject Windows Install disk, and to reboot into Windows "normally." Cannot eject Windows install disk. Click Close box.
    12) Windows Installer relaunches.
    13) Install process starts over again.
    Please note:
    1) This is a fully licensed copy of Windows 8.1
    2) I am using it on the same Mac as the original installation. Only change is the hard drive.
    3) This is not an authentication issue. Windows accepts the Product Key.
    4) Parallels is not involved in any way.
I have talked to several Windows support teams. None were helpful and ultimately said this was a Bootcamp/Apple problem
Apple Support was much more helpful but said they'd never encountered this problem before and were flummoxed.
I have reformatted the Bootcamp hard disk several times. At one point I thought the issue might be that the Mac still thinks the original Windows installation exists because I kept the same name for the new hard disk. Renaming and reformatting did not change the behavior.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I wound up solving, or at least working around my problem. Selecting "Custom Install", instead of Upgrade, took me to a dialog box where  Installer could format the Bootcamp drive from scratch. Installation then proceeded as expected. Unfortunately this cost me my partition, but that was better than being stuck in this Upgrade Catch-22. Note that formatting and partitioning this drive within the Boot Camp assistant did not solve my problem.

so i installed lion on my friends macbook pro and it didn't let me log into his personal username like after you turn it on it just hilghts his name and the bar to type in his password doesn't show you. so what i was thing is to back up his personal hard drive and restoring it and try to reinstall lion.. from a momory stick that i have put lion on as my personal copy. any way on doing it better or how to restore the mac and be able to reinstall lion plz help.

    Chuck
Without knowing what exactly has gone wrong it is difficult to be precise, but it sounds a bit like you are attempting to install YOUR copy of Lion on your friend's machine?
I'm not sure the licence allows you to do that.
IF you are attempting to install a legitimate copy of Lion on his machine, then I would suggest you try again. That sometimes works.
Do you / he have a backup?
Have you tried starting from the recovery disk and repairing the hard drive etc.?

  • Do I need to reinstall Lion because my iPhone stopped being recognized by...

Do I REALLY need to reinstall Lion because my iPhone stopped being recognized by Image Capture, Aperture and iPhoto but still shows up in iTunes?
I was on the phone with Apple Support with 5 different Advisors for more than 3 hrs today and we were not able to resolve the problem (yet). Although the problem is frustrating, it's always kind of a pleasure chatting with the Advisors. (I said kinda)
Approx 2 weeks ago, iPhoto, Aperture and Image Capture all stopped recognizing my iPhone. Oddly, iTunes has no problem recognizing the iPhone. Here are just a few of the things we tried but didn't get the apps to see the iPhone again:
    - Removed and deleted all photos on camera roll using a windows machine
    - Removed all other photos synced between my iMac and iPhone
    - Made sure an image existed on the camera roll
    - Recorded some video on iPhone and then tried to get iMovie to recognize device
    - Restored (gulp) the device followed by a restore from back-up
    - Restored again (double gulp) but this time to factory settings and kept the device as a "new iPhone"
    - Logged on as different users
    and on and on.
Also, after noting that my machine refused to send a systems report to my Sr Advisor (Jimmy) at Apple, he suggests we re-install Lion (ack).  But when we went to access the Recovery Partition we realized it wasn't there.
    No recovery partition?
Not sending system reports to Apple?
Several Apps not seeing iPhone while others are recognizing the device?
So now I wait for Lion to arrive on one of those nifty Apple thumb drives for me to try re-installing ;-(
The following screen grab shows my iPhone in iTunes but not recognized by Image Capture. URGH!

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

Well Apple Suupport is still tops in every book.
The fix for my problem was so ridiculously simple, I can't beleived it worked.
But somehow the mouse install disk (stuck in the drive) was disrupting the start up. I was instructed to take the batteries out of the wireless mouse.
    IT WORKED.
Not sure if anyone that's had this similar problem is using wireless devices, but take the batteries out of them, use plug in devices to work around the problem, eject the CD and if you luck out like I did, it'll work
