[REINSTALL] moved /var to another partition - now everything is borked
Ah, I reckon I might have shot my install
I was running out of space and seeing that /var took up some 3GB I decided to move it to another partition and adjust the fstab accordingly. It all worked but on reboot hal didn't start. I tried to reinstall it with pacman and now I am told:
error: database path is undefined
error: could not register 'core' database (could not open database)
Am I shot???

All that's in /var/cache/pacman/pkg are packages. You can keep packages if you're afraid something will break and only rolling back to older packages will fix it (which for some people it does), but there are some mirrors out there that update slower than others (so the thing is to pick a mirror that syncs often, so if you really need to downgrade, you can grab the older packages from a slower mirror for example).
I clean out my package cache periodically. If something breaks and I need to roll back (which happened to me with the bluetooth upgrade) I usually check the web CVS frontend for the PKGBUILDs and rebuild what I need.
In general, there's no reason to hold on to your cache - and certainly not that big a cache. If you keep it under a GB you should be safe, generally that covers most if not all packages you installed, one version back. You'll have to sift, though.

Moved itunes to another disk now everything is gone
ok so my (C) disk was low on space, so I went to iTunes, and moved itunes to another drive. after I went throught that whole process, I copyed the iTunes folder from the (c) drive to the (d) drive (the new drive) and then after it had finished pasting, I deleted the iTunes folder from the original drive. I then opened itunes and it now is empty what do I do in order to get everything back? thankyou in advance.

I'm confused.
You moved iTunes to another drive and then then you copied the iTunes folder to the D: drive?
How did you first move iTunes to another drive?
Then why did you copy the iTunes folder after that? Isn't this moving iTunes to another drive"
Hold Shift and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder you copied to the other drive. -
[SOLVED] Problem in moving /var to new partition
Hi,
I setup a new systemd Arch instalation on an SSD and migrated successfully from my old initscripts based HDD setup. I have 2 problems now, one leading to another.
I wanted to move /var to a partition on HDD and followed the following steps.
Created a new reiserfs partition for var on my HDD using gparted. Labelled it as "var"
Rebooted to emergency mode and mounted it. (I remounted root as read-write)
# mount /dev/sda8 /mnt/new_var
Copied var contents to new_var
# cd /var
# cp -Rax * /mnt/new_var/
# cd /
# mv var var.old
# umount /mnt/new_var
# mkdir var
# mount /dev/sda8 /var
Added the following line to /etc/fstab
LABEL=var /var reiserfs defaults 0 1
When I reboot after this, systemd is timing out waiting for a var partition. Here is an pic taken during boot.
I restored the old var using the emergency shell and could reboot properly. I tried the same thing as a normal user using sudo after the system was up. (During the moving, I got sudo warnings because the sudo folder in /var/db wasnt there.)
With the new var partition in place, I proceeded to install a few packages. But when I rebooted, I the same thing happened again and had to get into emergency shell and restore the old var.
However, after this, the packages which I installed in the interim are not available in pacman database.
So,
1. How can I move /var to a separate partition and still keep systemd happy?
2. Is there a way to rescan or rebuild the pacman database? Will syncing the 2 different var setups that I've solve the problem? If so, how can I sync them?
Last edited by kungsu (2012-11-04 14:54:25)I'm thinking in collision propabilities here. How probably might the device node change? I have machines that keep doing this without a real reason. I'd prefer labels on such machines. Other machines don't - without a real reason as well. I'd prefer device node notation on such machines. Labels can be changed manually, new partitions can be added and USB sticks with labled partitions can be inserted. While the USB situation should not be a big deal, both, labels as well as device nodes can be subject to changes, collisions and other arbitrary events. The only thing that is unlikely to change (for no obvious reason), be altered by accident or made collide with another one, are UUIDs.
I would not say using lables is bad, it's just that if you already have an issue, why not rule that out? It seemed to have solved the issue, it can be as easy as playing safe sometimes. Furthermore, the reason why I recommended to change the label from "var" to something else, is how common "var" is. It is like using a keyword in a programming language as a variable name, it may or may not work, so why not make it a habbit of not using such meta-keywords at all?
EDIT: There is no particular reason, I suspect the lable isn't set correctly. Maybe there is a problem with the partition table - that's where I'd suspect the LABLE to be stored.
Or maybe you just did the whole by-label thing wrong.
"/dev/disk/by-label/var" instead of LABEL="var"…

Moving mail to another partition
greetings,
I'm doing some maintenance on my mail server.
i want to move all of may mailboxes to another hard drive.
currently i have most users in /var/spool/imap/ and i need to move them to
/volumes/HD2/.
I have the partition listed on WGM. and i have used mailbfr -b to back up the data. Now, can i just move the mailboxes, and run a reconstruct?
or will that just rebuild the mailboxes on the original partition?
how to I rebuild on the other drive?
TIAadditional info.
it seems that mailbfr is only backing up the accounts in the default /var/spool/imap/user/ directory.
is there a special flag to set for alternate partitions?

[Solved] Copying my installation to another partition.
Hello. I have 5 partitions in my laptop: one with Linux Mint, one with Arch, another one with my files, and I use the other two for testing other distros. I don't have a bootloader in Arch, I use Mint's GRUB for detecting and booting any distro. I want to do some experiments in Arch, but I don't want to mess up my main installation, and I don't want to reinstall it again in another partition. So, I was thinking, is it possible to just copy all the files of the Arch partition in another one, and then edit fstabs so it mounts the correct root partition? Or this won't work?

I have used this a number of times, and it works quite well. You might also want to add '-H' (to make it -aAHXv) so that hard links are preserved. This will make the rsync process more resource intensive though. -
After install of Mavericks, it looks like my system kernal panics and just sits there. I tried waiting over two nights. Tried reinstalling twice, booting ro the repair partition and repairs permissions/drive/verify , with no problems. Tried reseting PVRAM(or whateverit called). Recovery partition now has Mavericks as OS. Im running a iMac i3 27 inch circa 2011. Any ideas? Can still bootcamp into windows.
Thank youbhadotia wrote:Anyway's the file downloaded from dell to update the partition for Studio 1555 is corrupted (checksums don't match). My partition still doesn't boot. I'm working to fix this and will update my post when I'm done.
The file seems to create the CD/DVD/Image and USB just fine. So I used this only to create a CD image which I then wrote on a blank CD which seems to work fine. Also, I played around a bit and had some partial success in booting the partition. I've updated my original opening post with the new findings.
Whew!! what a waste of time! Never want to do all of this again .

I moved my FCP events and projects folder onto my external hard drive and now everything is gone on FCP. When I tried to reload those folders onto FCP nothing happened. I still get the missing files image. When I try to import the folders manually something pops up that says it is incompatable. It is possible to retrieve everything that was lost?
"When I tried to reload those folders onto FCP nothing happened"
Brownale6 how can u reload folder in to FCP.
As you said folders are moved to external disk but have you checked it should be like this
For Event
external disk>Final Cut Events>your event folder.
For project
external disk>Final Cut Projects>your project folder. -

How to include another partition in tape backup
Hi
I use a shell script written by my sysadmin to take backup of our oracle system on tape. now i moved some datafiles on another partition and hence want to include that partition also in tape backup.
for fs in $(cat /tmp/dailybkupfs | awk '{print $1}')
do
# For / replace the / with root for log filename
if [[ "$fs" = "/" ]]
then
fn="root"
else
# replace any / in fs name with _ for use in log filename
fn=$(echo $fs | sed 's:/::g')
fi
if umount ${fs}
then
echo "${fs} unmounted successfully" >>/tmp/logs/summary
else
echo "${fs} unmount failed" >>/tmp/logs/summary
fi
if ufsdump 0uf prddb:/dev/rmt/0n ${fs} >${log}.${fn}.${dt} 2>&1
then
echo "Full Backup of ${fs} completed successfully" >> /tmp/logs/summary
else
echo "Full Backup of ${fs} failed" >> /tmp/logs/summary
fi
if mount ${fs}
then
echo "${fs} mounted successfully" >>/tmp/logs/summary
else
echo "${fs} mount failed" >>/tmp/logs/summary
fi
done
echo "Full Backup of all DB file systems Complete" >> /tmp/logs/summary
Also the dailybkupfs file has the following contents->
/u01
/u02
/u03
/u04
/u05
/u06
Now to include /u07 partition for backup, I just need to include the /u07 partition in file dailybkupfs.right?
Thanks
AnmolI am concerned that the config file resides in /tmp.
That filesystem normally gets cleared if the box reboots.
So as far as I can tell, if your box is rebooted, the backups stop working.. -

Can I install Calendar Server on another partition other than root file system
Can I install Calendar Server on another partition other than / ?
<P>
In this version, the default path is hard coded to install in
/users/unison. However, if you do not have enough room on your root
partition or choose to install it in another location, you can do so
using a logical link. The installation guide explains this as well.
<P>
For example, suppose you want /users/unison, which must NOT already
exist, to be logically linked to /var/opt/unison, which must exist.
Then as root user:
<P>
<UL>
<LI>
Create the directory /users (if it does not already exist)
<P>
% mkdir /users
<P>
<LI>
Create the logical link. The directory /users/unison must
NOT exist before doing this.
<P>
% ln -s /var/opt/unison /users/unison
</UL>
<P>
<P>makes a lot of sense. I am looking for an answer myself. My documents folder long ago outgrew it's place on the boot drive. It would be nice to keep it in the user folder organized on another disc
