Reinstall necessary... how to backup?

okay
I've pretty much determined that I need to do a clean reinstall in order to improve the incredibly slow and spotty performance of Leopard.
so HOW is it recommended to do a backup before I have to wipe the internal hard drive?
Time Machine?
Carbon Copy Cloner?
SuperDuper?
I've previously used SuperDuper but it's not currently Leopard compatible (supposedly).
I'm not sure what that MEANS though.
I can put this machine into target mode and then use another Mac to run SuperDuper (in 10,4,110 and clone the drive.
but will i be able to migrate the data back in?
suggestions?

Carbon Copy Cloner will give you a bootable backup, but remember to do it on a drive that isn't the one you're erasing.

IBooks will not open with new ipad and upgraded iOS. It only opens briefly to show an empty  bookcase. I installed the most recent update of iBooks. In apps store it says 'open'.  But the same thing happens...a brief flash.  Strangely, the image and list of my collection actually shows in miniature with all the open apps; so I can close it as I do any other app.
I have all my important .pdf reference documents in my library.    I am afraid to reinstall the apps risking loss of data. I was never able to figure out how to backup ibooks. Any way to save without access to the program?

Now that you have your PDFs on your computer's iTunes library you could try deleting and redownloading the app, and then sync the PDFs back to it - as long as you continue to keep a copy of the PDFs on your computer (and preferably on a backup as well) then if the same thing happens again then you could delete and reinstall again (you shouldn't have any problems with the iBooks app, but then you shouldn't have had a problem this time either).
You could try GoodReader (you could have the most important PDFs in both) - but the current version on iOS 7 isn't getting very good reviews in terms of its speed and crashes (it's description page says that a major update is coming soon).

Drag the entire library to a volume on an external drive formatted as Mac OS Extended, or use Time Machine.

Do you have access to another Mac with a disk drive?  If so you can do it in one of two ways:
1 - on the Mac with the optical drive launch Disk Utility and make a disk image of the iLife 11 disk. Connect the two Macs together and transfer the disk image to your MacBook Air.  Mount the disk image and install from it.  I have my iLife disks saved that way for quick and easy reinstall when necessary.
2 - connect the two Mac together so you can access the MBA from the Mac with the disk drive. Insert the iLife disk, and install from the second Mac to the MBA.

  • How to backup library before an iTunes reinstallation

I run Vista, and I happened to have the problem of my CD/DVD drive disappearing on me. I googled it, figured out how to fix it by deleting a couple registry items and restarting, and it started working again. Only thing is, right after that every time I open iTunes I now get a message saying iTunes can no longer import CD's because something got changed, please reinstall. I kept ignoring it, and now iTunes won't even open up. So my question is, how can I for back up my iTunes library before uninstalling, so I won't have to manually import every song file. I have multiple copies of some songs and I don't want those back in the library after reinstalling. Also, after that how would I go about reimporting my old library?
    Thank you.

External drives (for backing up) are less than $100.
    Backup software will run automatically.
If everything on your computer disappeared right now or you r hard drive died and it would not affect/bother you in the least, you could get by without a backup.
But since you are here asking how to backup some files...
I highly suggest you consider it.

  • How to start VPN Server with PPTP + How to backup Addressbook Server

    Hey people,
I currently have Lion Server running on my mac mini server, it was upgraded to Lion (server) from Snow Leopard server.
Now i have 2 issues i'd like to address and ask your help for.
    1. VPN Server on Lion Server.
I have had the VPN server running on Snow Leopard server without a problem, however, since my Lion upgrade it just isn't working with PPTP anymore.
I did read alot of discussions here and also read that you can configure it through the terminal using the serveradmin tool.
I have followed the instructions to get PPTP enabled, but it just isnt listening on the correct port, i don't see anything running nor can i connect from my Lion client to the server (i get server not responding).
Does anyone experiece the same problem? or know how to solve this?
    2. Addressbook Server on Lion Server.
I have a few network users on my system, they use the Addressbook server through their iphone/ipad.
I don't know how to backup their contacts they added in the server, is there a way to backup the data?
I have already tried to export the user using the Workgroup Manager, but when i look in the file, i don't see any additional info other then the user settings.
I have been thinking of reinstalling the server to a complete fresh Lion only installation instead of the current upgraded Lion from Snow Leopard, that's why i need to backup the info.
Time Machine backups of an upgraded Snow Leopard Server to Lion Server won't work on a fresh Lion Server installation, i have always had the problem that it can't read the data for some reason.
Anyone know a solution for these 2 issues?

  • Rescue and Recovery -- How to Backup the Partition

    Hi there, folks.
I'm trying to create a backup of the default factory image on a partition of my harddrive. I originally ran Windows 7 64 bit Professional. I tried out Windows 8 and just this past weekend returned to Windows 7 with a friend's copy of it. However, Rescue and Recovery doesn't seem to recognize that the partition contains the backup image.
Mainly, I'm confused because the current version of ThinkVantage and R&R is completely different than the software that, just a month ago, was constantly reminding me of the partition and that it needed to be restored. Any help?
Does anyone know how to backup JUST a partition? Thank you!

One work-around that I have used successfully when I had an Acronis image but no R&R image is to do a full restore to factory using the factory recovery media (from Lenovo or home made on the TP) and then restoring only the windows partition from the non-Lenovo image.  This should leave the service partition, the MBR, and track 0 in the Lenovo mystery mode, and let the think button work, and you get your cloned up-to-date OS.
I should add that in one of my experiments w/multi-booting and fiddling partitions, after using this procedure with Vista on my T400, vista wouldn't boot. It required a bootable vista DVD to run the vista boot repair procedure (twice).  After that, "think" and vista booted as expected.  I don't know of any way to do that with Lenovo install media.  If no MS Vista DVD is available, there are stripped down versions with the repair stuff only floating around the web.  The usual precautions re downloads apply.  There may be manual ways to repair the vista boot stuff that I haven't found yet.
I can't say with certainty that this will always be necessary.  I may have screwed something up during the two step restore process.
The magic "think" button is (potentially) pretty useful, but it and the "new improved" vista boot process are a little too fragile, IMNSHO.

To take a cold backup, shutdown the database. Then use the "tar"
command to backup all of the files that make up the database.
You should also backup the config.ora, and the initxxxx.ora
    files.

  • How to backup Logic v9.1.1 before update to Logic v9.1.2?

    Dear fellows,
read that the new update will overwrite the old version.
How to backup Logic v9.1.1 correctly?
Which files I have to backup?
    Greetings from Germany
    Marcus

Those programs allow you to make a disk image, meaning a bit-for-bit copy of the actual disk. It's not an incremental backup as is what you get with TM. Depending on the options you select, you can even boot from the image if necessary.
Is there a difference between this and what TM offers? Let's just say that I feel more confident in restoring a hard drive from a disk image created by one of those programs (my choice is CCC) than Time Machine. That's my personal preference.

How to Backup a MacBook Pro to Icloud

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can't back up a MacBook to iCloud, as there isn't enough storage to make backups of a Mac. Instead, you can use services like CrashPlan, but the best way to back up your Mac is by using Time Machine or a cloning app like Carbon Copy Cloner onto an external drive. Doing this, you can be sure your data is with you everywhere

Hi there,  i'm new to the iPHONE community and please can someone tell me how to backup my phone to iCLOUD. How do i connect with wi-fi. Must i buy a wi-fi connetion or what.Thank you kind regards

Do you have a wi-fi network in your home ? If you do then you should be able to connect your phone to it via Settings > Wi-Fi on your phone - that should show any networks that are available, and tapping on the network that you want to use (and typing in its password if it's password protected) should connect the phone to it. If you don't have a wi-fi network then yes, you will need wifi router in your home, which is connected to the internet (e.g. via your phone line) to be able to back up your phone to iCloud.

When you connect your phone and start iTunes on the left side you will see your phone listed under devices.Click on te icon next to it that looks like a battery. Click on the music button at the top and uncheck the sync music box.

i am currently using iphone 5 and i want to upgrade my phone to ios7 i want to know if it is necessary to keep backup of contacts?

As with every computing device, a backup is your ONLY insurance should anything ever go wrong with your device.
Without a backup, if something does happen to go awry, you will loose whatever you have not backed up.
So my response is, of course you need a backup.  You always need a backup, no matter what.

  • How to backup new learned remote-control data for the IR-remote APP???

    Hello @ all,
does anybody know a way to backup the new learned remote control on XPERIA Z Tablet?
    I found a database under:
    "system/vendor/etc/sony-ir-remote/db"
But after I've saved new learned remote controls the date and the size of these DB's
are the same as before. Therefore the IR-remote control APP dosn't save the new data
    in these files.
Furthermore there isn't a button in the remote-control APP to backup new learned remote controls.
And I can't choose the remote control APP in the backup function APP from the XPERIA Z Tablet
to save the data. Also the backup with the Sony PC Companion Software dosn't save the learned
remote controls. Who develops such a dross mobile software?
Sorry SONY, but you have the most unpalatable support I've lived to see!
The first SONY support center refered me to another support center.
The mobile support center does not answer to my questions per mail.
Then I call the mobile support center. The answers were shallow and standard.
The support engineer want to ask the development and call back.
However, I am still waiting for promised recall.

I am facing the same problem.
I have spend a few days to configure and train my Sony tablet to configure for all my remotes such as aircon and lighting. I did a backup using the Sony companion to my PC. When my tablet was faulty and serviced. But the backup did not recover the IR remote settings and codes which I programmed previously. I also tried your backup restore app but it also does not save the configuration.
It is VERY IMPORTANT for me to backup the settings.
Please provide the folders and path of where the IR REMOTE settings and personal configuration and codes trained were kept so that I could back them up. Are these path protected area that required rooted access?
Hope that Sony could update the app to include backup of new trained codes and settings and in the meantime to provide a procedure of how to backup the setting and trained IR codes with or without rooting the device.
