Reinstall OS X, then restore Documents, Settings and Apps

Howdy,
I am planning on reinstalling Leopard soon. Things are running a little slower than normal and I'd like a fresh start. I use Time Machine as one of my backup solutions. Can I reinstall OS X from the DVD, then restore the apps, docs and settings I had before? I don't think I want to restore the OS from the Time Machine backup because I'd like to start really fresh.
Thanks for the help!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
You can do this, if it's really what you want to do. Full instructions are in the *Erase, Install, & Migrate* section of the Glenn Carter - Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine post at the top of this forum.
Note that you can also do an *Archive and Install,* detailed in that same post, which is probably a better option.
Unlike Windoze, where a periodic reinstall is often recommended, it's usually overkill for a Mac, and often doesn't help anyway. OSX is much better at taking care of itself automatically. Just as an example, it automatically defragments any file under 20 mb, so separate defragging is almost never needed.
One of the most common causes of a general slowdown is a too-full disk. If your internal HD has less than 10% free (15% - 20% is even better), pruning out some old files should be your first step.
Your best bet is probably to identify and address your actual problem(s). We can help here, but you'd probably get a wider audience, and find similar threads, in the +Using Leopard+ forum.

took a back up in iTunes then restored factory settings and then restored back but photos and songs missing

How did the photos get onto the iPad ? If they were synced from a computer then they aren't included in the backup - the restore would look for them in the directory that they were synced from.
And for the songs (and the contents of the Videos app and any iTunes downloads) they are also not included in the backup, the restore would look to copy them back from your computer's iTunes library. Do you have them in your iTunes library, or can you copy them into your library (File > Add To Library) so that you can sync them back ?

  • Restrictions passcode does not wok anymore. If I restore factory settings and do a back up will it restore the old passcode?  Hasn't been backed up in a while

The restriction passcode stopped working.  I did not forget it.  The iPad has not been backed up for a long time.  If I back up then restore factory settings then restore backup will it still be restricted with the old passcode?

  • Can't connect to Wifi after restoring factory settings and restoring backup (internet on computer working just fine)

Want to die.  I've wasted my entire Sunday trying to connect to Wifi on my phone.  I tried the reset network settings, restored the phone to factory settings then restored the backup and still no game.  I have restarted the **** thing and am very frustrated. Every time I've updated my software with Apple I end up having to replace my phone.  I have an appointment with the genius bar tomorrow ,but hopefully someone here can help me so I don't jump in a river before that time.

    Hmmm.....
It's worth a hard reset (press and hold the sleep/wake button and the Home button together, ignoring the 'slide to power down' message and then release them when the display blanks. Press the sleep/wake button until the logo appears and then wait for the restart which takes a little while...)
Apart from that, it may be worth clearing Safari's cache, etc..... (Settings > Safari > Clear History/Cookies/Cache)
    In any event, 'Good luck'!!
If all else fails it IS possible that some WiFi hotspots are VERY hot and emit more power than is really allowable in the Standards, resulting in 'frying' your WiFi receiver (possible but unlikely). If this is the case, return your iPhone to an Apple store with the 'WiFi not working' message but don't mention Starbuck's or anyone else.....just don't use Starbuck's WiFi service ever again!

  • If i factory reset my ipod touch(5th gen), can i reset it as the option 'set up as new ipod', and then i can just go into the app store/itunes store and restore my music and apps and not icloud with photos and ect?

if i factory reset my ipod touch(5th gen), can i reset it to the option 'set up as a new ipod', and then i can just go into the app store/itunes store and log into my apple ID so i can just restore my music and apps and not icloud with photos, contacts, ect. and then later i can add contacts that i need/want instead of them restoring them from icloud?
The reason i asked this question is because i have been wondering this a lot ever since i got an exchange on this ipod (and ive only had it for a few weeks now) because my last ipod had a lot of problems. so after i restored my ipod with my computer/itunes, i downloaded apps that i wanted, and then when i went to the storage to see how much storage was left, it said 0 bytes. i was freaking out because i didnt know how that could be, i mean, cause like, that is impossible when i just 'purchased' it, that the space was full but i looked and all my pictures were on this ipod and i already put them on my computer so i dont need them anymore thats why i wanna reset it now so there is nothing on it so i can have more space for stuff to do and download on it.
it is updated to iOS 8 but that happened when i purchased it, so i didnt have a choice to update it even though i didnt want to update to iOS 8...
and i hope you understand my problem..
i would REALLY REALLY appreciate it if someone could tell me a solution to my problem!!! thank you so much!

Hey Sierra, You can do just what you have stated. My question, what is your "other"? If it is over 1.5 GB you most likely have corrupt files. Doing a Restore to New, Factory restore should correct it. Just make sure you make a full backup of all information on your iPod to your computer before you restore, so you don't lose your stuff, contacts, videos, pictures, non-iTunes music, etc, use the cable and connect with your computer. Then, via cable, connect to your computer, run the Restore to new, don't use your backup. Treat this iPod as if it was your first one ever. When restore is done, set up and add what info you wish to install on this iPod. The music apps etc you purchased should be on your computer, if not you should be able to retrieve purchased apps and music from iTunes. Any music, videos, apps not purchased from iTunes will be lost to you if you do not save them to your computer or the cloud first. When your done, make a current Backup and you should good to go. Hope this helps. Good luck. Cheers.

  • I cant conect to the Apps Store...I restored my settings and verified my account and password (I can log on any computer) just not my IPad.

I restored my settings and verified my account and password (I can log on any computer) just not my IPad.
When I touch on the App Store icon on the Home Screen the updates screen pops up with new updates. I touch on the update all, the Apple ID Password window pops up, when I enter my password (which works on my home computer) I get a pop up message that states "Cannot connect to iTunes Store OK
I had no troubles until my daughter got a IPod and I set up a iTunes account off the home computer for her (she has her own sign on). I have reset the passwords and the restored the IPad. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 60G classic with a non-functioning center select button. Can I set a specific playlist and change settings by hooking up to my PC and then maintain those settings and that playlist once I go remote?

I'm having a little trouble understanding the part about your password having to be reset. Why is that happening??
    Let's start with Firefox's settings:
    (1) You can configure the password manager feature on this tab:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Security
There is a checkbox to enable/disable the feature.
There also is a "Saved Passwords" button to review and remove any passwords you do not want Firefox to keep.
That tab also has a feature to set a Master Password so that no one can use your saved passwords without knowing the Master Password. You may need to exit Firefox in order for Firefox to ask for that again.
    Related articles:
    * [[Password manager - Remember, delete and change saved passwords in Firefox]]
    * [[Use a Master Password to protect stored logins and passwords]]
    (2) Site-specific permissions
If you want to use the password manager for other sites but NOT a particular site, you can configure that in the Permissions Manager.
In a new tab, type or paste '''about:permissions''' in the address bar and press Enter.
After the page loads, use the search box in the upper left corner to narrow down the list to the site you want to configure. Highlight the site on the left side, and on the right side, choose Block under Store Passwords.
    (3) Form autocomplete suggestions
Separate from passwords, Firefox remembers entries you've made into forms (in most cases) and lists the matching ones below the form field in a drop-down.
To clear a suggestion, press the down arrow key to highlight it and press the Delete key.
To turn off this feature, see this article: [[Control whether Firefox automatically fills in forms with your information]].
To review and selectively edit or delete form history entries, you need an add-on. For example, you could try this one: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/form-history-control/

Chrome did something. Insetad of all my Bookmarks, settings and Apps it's a fresh Chrome. Like the day it started. Virgin, naked, nothing there.  How do I restore the Chrome that was there?

Chrome 'syncs' your information to its servers, so you can restore this information when you sign into your account, regardless of what device you are using. As for the latter part of your comment, I am not really following. I don't have Chrome currently installed on my machine so I can not help you step by step. All I know is you must SIGN IN to your google account on chrome and check the chrome preferences.
Google dashboard will show you all the information associated with your google account stored on their servers:

  • How can I get the apple configurator to retain a devices settings and apps?

    Hi there all!
I have an iPhone that already has apps and email settings on it.  I want to use the configurator to stop the device being paired with anything else not allow it to connect to any other Macs.  I've connected it, backed it up, enabled supervision, then deployed the profile.  Through out all of this I never get the option to restore device settings and when I click on edit stored backups, it contains nothing.  With supervsion disabled I can restore the backup but, snag is to disallow pairing it needs to be supervised.
Also, am I right in thinking that once it's supervised I can't install any apps directly from the device ?
Sorry if these are really noddy questions :-)  I just want to stop the device from being able to connect to or pair with anything other than my mac.
    Thanks
    Will

Jpegs can't have transparent areas. Most likely you had layers and were forced to save "as a copy", which means that the image which remains open in PSE is not the jpg. A file saved as a copy makes a copy in the save format, but it's not like save as where you now see the newly saved version instead of the original. The original remains open and unsaved onscreen.

  • Time Machine backup restores OS X and Apps

Time Machine backup restores OS X and Apps or only Data?

    Hi lseit,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like information what what information is restored while restoring from Time Machine. For information on this process, please review the information in the attached article.
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
Restoring data from Time Machine backups
With Time Machine, you can go "back in time" to restore files, versions of files, or your entire system. If Time Machine alerts you that your Time Machine backup disk can't be found, make sure your backup drive is connected and mounted.
    Best regards,
    Joe
