Reinstall Panther

Can I reinstall OSX Panther without System 9 as sy' 9 takes up a lot of room on my hrad drive? also if I do reinstall will I lose my other programs?

Sig, Welcome to the discussion area!
(a) You can install OS X without installing OS 9. If you do that you won't be able to run any pre-OS X applications.
(b) OS 9 doesn't really take up that much disc space so you won't see much more free disc space.

  • How do I remove Snow Leopard and reinstall Panther?

How do I remove Snow Leopard 10.6.2 from my G5 and reinstall Panther 10.3? My G5 only came with 10.3 CD and I can't start up from that. I would like to eventually get to 10.5 Leopard but don't have a CD/DVD of that either. Is there somewhere I can download the software?
I use Adobe CS3 designer software for my business. It's been crashing since I updated to Snow Leopard. I thought I could go back down in OS's but for some reason I can't start up from the 10.3 CD.
    Any idea's are much appreciated.

First, You will need your original Panther install DVD to return to Panther. Before doing so, I would make a bootable clone of my Sno boot volume on an external drive for purposes of backup, possible migration, and fail-safe--even if you have a TM backup. Your only probably trouble-free way of returning to Panther is erase and install. Before you do so, check the compatibility of your hardware and software; check [here|http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/forum:start] and [here|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258].
Given that you have dealt with any compatibility issues, your only problem should be migrating from your clone in a way that avoids your Sno problems. In this regard, you generally can drag and drop you data files from Sno without issue (see links below--use Preferential Treatment before migrating anything and the by-hand migration guide to accomplish your migration). I would reinstall my apps by hand. I would not migrate your users or settings. The remaining issue is dealing with the remaining contents of your user folder(s).
I would acquire [Preferential Treatment|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22790] and use this app to fix the your user preferences--the items in your User/Library/Preferences folder(s). After doing so, use [this guide|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6185507] to do the actual migration of the items in your user folder(s).
After reinstalling Panther, you will need to install Leopard. But note that upgrade disk to Leopard are difficult to find and, especially, at a reasonable price. You may need to buy a box set.
If you decide to make the move, then, in your case, I suggest that you do an upgrade install. If you do an upgrade, then, after installing, all you file, setting, users, and apps will be in their proper places, except for incompatible apps which will be archived in the Incompatible Applications folder. Upgrading is a very sound method.
I would not upgrade to Leo using any method unless, again, I had an external drive with a bootable clone of my internal-drive boot volume (this time a Panther clone) on it. I think that there is enough risk upgrading to Leopard that such conservatism is warranted. I would not use time machine for an installation backup; I don't trust it enough.
If you do not like Leopard or get a bad install, then you can restore your internal back to Panther using the clone, and nothing will be lost. In doing an upgrade install, the clone is your data backup and fail-safe device. In both cases, you can clone with Disk Utility, SuperDuper, or Carbon Copy Cloner. If you like the idea of cloning for a backup, etc., then I would acquire one of the last two mentioned programs.

  • Had to reinstall Panther - now CD won't recognize OS9 disks

I have a B&W G3 with 2 hard drives in it. Had to replace the larger of the two, and of course it was the one with my startup system (or one of them.) I could boot from my 9.2 startup disk which was on the other hard drive. I made a copy, using the disk utility restore function, on to a backup drive so that I didn't lose everything on the crashed disk. Then I replaced the hard drive, partitioned it and reinstalled Panther all the way to the most recent update. I was able to capture just about 98% of all of my previous system setting, extensions, etc., yet now when I put in an older CD (that was comaptible with OS9) it says it is "unrecognizable" and wants to inititialize or eject. When I go to system profiler it says there is no OS9 drivers for the CD. It is the original CD ROM from Apple, a matshita CDR. How can I recapture the driver? Where would it be?

    Daisy:
Since you already have everything in place on separate partitions, and it is so much of a hassle moving stuff around, I suggest you leave things alone until you need to something by way of re-installation.
In terms of backing up a firewire external HDD would be prefereable as you could then use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone to the firewire external, which you can then use as an emergency startup drive. It makes backing up a lot easier. SuperDuper is very easy to use and efficient. CCC works well, too, but is slightly more complex.

So, Cornelius, what you are saying is that I am making it harder for things to function smoothly? The reason I have been doing the partitions is to save time when running something like Disk Utility. It goes a lot faster on a 20GB than it would on a 100GB, or am I wrong in assuming that?
Now I have the daunting task of removing everything that I have finally gotten in place to the backup drive, and reformatting my MAC! UGH! Is there an easy way to do this without re-installing the major programs I use? When I was getting the data off of the previous bad drive, I dragged and dropped them onto the backup disk (a Simpletech 160GB USB) and that was very time consuming. I think it was slow because I have the old USB 1.1 and the backup is a USB 2.0. I did not use the backup software that came with it, because I was in panic mode and accidentally erased the program when I formatted the backup drive. Now I have it, but haven't used it yet. Even so, I was able to drag and drop most of the files and it worked fine, but I had to reinstall the OSX, QuarkXpress, and Indesign. This has been going on for a couple weeks and I am still tweaking things to get it right.
When I used the "restore" function it put the drive on the backup but not in a folder. When I dragged and dropped it went across like folders. Do you have any advice for me to make this less painful?
+One more point - if I did use the install OS9 drivers the first time, and it didn't, what would it do if it was only one partition? Would I get them back or not?+
You can check to see if the OS 9 drivers are installed by going to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More info > Hardware > ATA. In the lower section of the main panel go down the list and look for OS 9 drivers installed. It will say yes, or no.
    Good luck.

  • Cannot reinstall Panther OS

I am trying to do an erase and install.
I boot the system and put in the OS disk
I back up whatever needs to be.
I start the OS install and a windows comes up asking to restart. I do so and another window comes up asking for permission. I click ok.
The system restarts and goes right back to the desktop. Over and over.
Troubleshooting I have tried so far:
    Repaired drive permissions.
    Tried someones elses Panther
For the **** of it, tried someone elses Tiger
Same result for everything. System just reboots back to desktop.
I am an Apple newbie, so I may be doing something wrong.

    Hi Punisher2006!
As per the specs in This Topic, you were running Tiger 10.4.7.
Is there a specific reason that you ae now reinstalling Panther 10.3.x?
Just to verify, you have already done a backup, and you have erased the HD, correct?
After you have the CD/DVD inserted, when you restart, are you holding down on the C key, until the restart is complete?

    About Archive and Install
    • Depending on the Install disc that you use.... this will install a fresh copy of your current OS or copy of an earlier version.
    • This kind of installation automatically moves existing system files to a folder named Previous System, then installs Mac OS X again.
    • If Mac OS X is not already present, you cannot select Archive and Install. You must Erase and Install instead.
    Steps Prior to Installing
    • Unplug all peripherals.
    • Boot from the volume containing Mac OS X, and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions.
    • Boot from the OS X Install CD using the "C" key. and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function
How to use Archive and Install
    1. Start up from your Mac OS X Panther Install Disc using the "C" key..
    2. Select your language, and click Continue. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears
    3. Click Continue.
    4. After reading the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
    5. After reading the information, click Continue.
    6. An agreement sheet appears, click Agree.
    7. Select a Volume to install onto.
    8. Click Options, click Customize and make your selections, the click OK.
    9. Select Archive and Install, then OK.
    10. Click Continue in the next dialog window.
    11. Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
    12. Click OK.
    13. Click Continue to begin the installation....... When done Restart.
    14. Go to the folder Application/Utilities and run Disk Utility to repair permissions again.
    • Your old system will be stored in folder called "Previous Systems" at the root level of your startup volume. If you would later like to delete this folder, you may need to change its permissions.

  • Reinstall Panther or upgrade to Tiger?

Per earlier post, I'm having networking trouble due to the fact that I accidentally changed the name of my powerbook so now windows machine sees my mac but says the path to access it is invalid. Anyway, was thinking about upgrading to Tiger if I do a complete reinstall anyway. Pros/cons?? Also, if you had a choice between keeping Panther and adding RAM (I only have the 256 that came with the mac or upgrading to Tiger and keep 256, what would you do! Thanks for input!!!

    Dan:
I concur with Don in that the first thing you should think of doing is to upgrade your RAM. An upgrade of OS will not solve all your problems. Panther is an excellend OS. Indeed, there are a number of people in these pages who have gone back to Panther from Tiger.
My suggestion is to first upgrade your RAM and update to 10.3.9. Work with that for a while, and see how it works for you. Getting the latest and best is not always the best thing for everyone. I, myself have tried Tiger and am back to Panther.
    Good luck.

  • Need to reinstall Panther on a completely erased drive on my iMac... Help?

    Here's the history:
I had the SMART status failing notification but my drive was still working so I backed up all of its contents to an external hard drive.
I sent my iMac into the Apple store and had the drive completely replaced (under warranty).
When I got home, I started it up, but didn't want to go through the full reinstall and upgrade of the system. I tried to restore from my ext HD using Disk Utility – this required a complete erase and reformat of the drive. The restore didn't work since there wasn't enough space.
So I then used Carbon Copy Clone to create a disk image of the ext HD and tried to restore from the disk image to my iMac. That also didn't work because of disk space.
I then deleted some of the user documents to free up about 40GB of space to minimize the amount to clone. Instead of restoring from a disk image though, I restored through the backup in CCC. This worked, but when I went to reboot the iMac, it wouldn't. It got through the gears, but then went black and said there was no system. It went through 10 retries and then just stopped.
I am now trying to reinstall from the Mac OS X Install discs, but this isn't working either. I insert the disc, and hold down the "c" key to start up from it, I get to the select destination and the drive has a red exclamation warning on it saying the system can't be installed onto the drive.
    I'm completely out of answers
Any help would be greatly appreciated This is my workhorse computer for my design studio at home (I am self-employed) and I'm relying on a laptop for now.

  • Reinstalling Panther over Leopard

    Hi
I just bought Leopard but hadn't read about any of the problems it throws up with CS2.
I'm in the middle of lot of work this year.
    I'm a student and I can't afford to upgrade to CS3.
    What are my alternatives?
I have an external drive. Is there some way of getting both systems to work with this?
    Really frustrated with apple.
    Thanks

How's that Apple tattoo working out for you Donny?
Adobe and Apple 'work closely together'. It may also be as much a problem with Adobe as Apple but in the grander scheme of things, both are to blame.
I am also disappointed with Apple because my whole experience of buying and installing Leopard has been pretty terrible. The third party they use for their delivery service were awful and unapologetic and prevented me from enjoying a good section of the Christmas holiday.
Apple were unable to control their third party or offer any explanation themselves which in terms of upholding their brand is pretty weak.
Apple and Adobe have a responsibility towards their respective brands and if they continue to provide bad experience, as they have to many CS2 users (and experience is ever crucial with todays consumer) they will gradually erode their reputation over time and be voted out of existence.
Up until now Donny I have been using apple for the last 17 years and, like you, have been the first to defend their honour but after this experience I'm not as inclined to do so.
Anyway, back to more helpful and less self righteous individuals. Yann I have the original start up disks for this computer. If I formatted my hard-drive with panther does that mean it will be a panther system? I know nothing about how to do this...
So I can then use my external for these applications?

  • Login after reinstall Panther.

Having startup issues so I reinstalled system software 10.3 to see if that would resolve.
Upon installation, screen asks for a login username and ID. I did not ever have this setup before.
I put in what I believe is my correct parameters, but they will not be accepted - the "password enter" space vibrates and erases the password upon entering it. I cannot get to the system without logging in.
How can I log onto the system without a password?
    PB I4   Mac OS X (10.3.3)

We cannot get to user folder due to inability to log in. We are certain we have the correct information but we cannot bypass the login screen. We never had one before, the only time a password is used is when the system software is updated. Besides, the name of the computer is my name, and my date of birth is the password, I have never changed it, now cannot get in.
The <Return> method also does not work. This is just some weird thing that never happened before.
After the re-install, we were prompted for a restart, and the login screen then popped up. The UserName shows right at the top, and the password has never been changed, so I do not know why this is happening.

  • Reformat/Reinstall Question re Panther

Hi and sorry for any duplication of this questionin other posts.
I need to reformat a 160G HD in my Dual Boot G4. OSX 10.3.9
must be reinstalled. It is too late to use clone apps like SuperDuper because the drive was unfortunately already erased, and a manual drag-back of the entire contents of the
backed-up contents of the HD was performed, leaving missing
invisible files missing. Hence, System 9 Folder seems to be okay, but, for OSX apps there are certain apps - mainly browser/
email, which i would prefer to retain the original settings, and,
migrate existing email folder contents (inbox/sent box etc).
    The browser is Netscape 7.2.
If possible i'd prefer to simply drag/drop over anything that i can
after wiping and reinstalling/updating the HD system back up to 10.3.9. I also assume that for my Sys. 9 folder (dual-bootable MDD) i can do a clean install and drag/drop prefs manually for the various apps within the OS 9 domain which i boot into independent and separately of OSX operation.
I'm looking for the shortest path by which to accomplish this
reinstall and to minimize the amount of individual application
reinstallations from scratch...wherever i can drag existing apps
and associated Prefs into the right places within OSX Panther.
    Any advice much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Cornelius, thanks and i will try to clarify as concisely
    as possible;
Does this HDD have anything on it currently?<<
Yes, the HD does have elements of the previous OSX System
but will not boot from OSX (a result of the "drag-back" of
backed up content, along with my OS 9 Folder, rather than
being able to successfully use SuperDuper or other clone
    app....
Do I understand that you backed up the HDD in question by copy by dragging to a backup drive, erased HDD and copied stuff back by dragging?<< </div>
Yes. As such, System 9 FOlder/Contents seems to be fine
having done it that way, but i recognize why OSX does not.
Are you planning to erase the drive again, install Panther, and repeat the process of copying by dragging?<<</div>
I want to erase/reformat the drive again, and reinstall Panther using proper Disk-Set procedure of restore/reinstall
but save original prefs of as much of the previous system(s)
apps (for both OS 9 and OS X) i want to save/preserve..
presumably having to do so by manual drag where possible.
Does this mean you want to repeat the process which you have already performed?<< </div>
No, just whatever can be salvaged for individual application
    preferences, most importantly, Browser/Email (bookmarks,
inbox/address books, mail settings prefs)- within BOTH
systems... I would like to preserve, rather than having to
    a) re-enter User Prefs, Mail Settings and also need to
keep existing Email in the respective browser mail apps.
Other apps, i can take the time to reinstall and re-enter
    registration data.
I hesitate to make assumptions in terms of what you are doing. However, backing up and restoring by copying by dragging, while it works for simple data files, for some typs of apps, and for OS 9 System Folder and OS 9 Applications folder, will not give you the desired outcomes for other types of files. In OS X there are hidden files which are essential to the efficient functioning of the OS that cannot be copied by dragging.<<</div>
My questions above is to ascertain exactly what you have done so far and what the current situation is. We can then take it from there to see what can be done next to minimize the damage and enable you to recover in the best way possible.<<
I totally understand. the entire situation as it stands
happened due to some anomaly whereby using CarbonCopyCloner
(and SuperDuper before that) was sidetracked because both
programs reported inability to recopy "All Files" back to
the Drive (error message to that effect). To get back up and running in OS 9, I then just dragged OS 9 System back
onto the HD and have been using that environment only.
Soo, the bottom line is, i need to erase the HD and reinstall it all...but want to save whatever prefs i can
in the proper fashion. (Far more familiar with doing so in
    OS 9 stuff than OSX)
Hope that addresses where i'm at with this and appreciate
    your help.

  • Reinstalling OSX Panther and Keep Tiger

Before I attempt this... Does anyone know the best way to reinstall Panther, so I can have both OS on my computer and choose to start up from either one?
    Power Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

No, but since all dual processor were AGP models, that means you at least have access to startup methods not available to the PCI PowerMac G4. That includes among others:
    1. Firewire hard drives.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58606
    2. Startup Manager for partitioned, second and third hard drives, and Firewire hard drives.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
So you have an option of either cloning up your data to an external Firewire hard drive, and partitioning your hard drive so you have two operating systems on one, or adding a second hard drive via Firewire, or the additional IDE ports inside the machine to have a second operating system on.
I would in either case keep a frequent backup of your data as my FAQ explains:

  • Removing OS 10.4 (Tiger) and Reinstalling OS 10.3 (Panther)

I would like to remove OS 10.4 (Tiger) from my computer and replace it with the original OS 10.2.7 that came with my PowerMac G5. But when I put the Software Install & Restore disc it say's that there is a newer version and will not let me continue the installation.
I am doing this because I cannot get Final Cut Pro 5 to capture on with Tiger, and i could with OS 10.3.9, but when I go to Reinstall Panther it says there is not an earlier version of OS X and it too will not let me continue.
That's what I'm up against. If you could direct me to the Folder where the OS 10.4 is installed on my hard drive that would be wonderful (without deleting essential files).
    Thank you very much.

    Brittney:
The article Mac OS X: How to reinstall a prior version has suggestions to get you started.
My suggestion would be for you to be sure that you have your Users Folder backed up. Then do a complete reformat and re-install of Panther or Jaguar. The following step-by-step assumes you are installing Panther.
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one. See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD.)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Optional: (Select the sub-volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
    Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
    After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    Connect to Internet.
Download and install 10.3.9 Combo Update.
    Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.

  • Airport wireless update installation v1.0 on Pismo/Panther

I'm getting a blue, then grey screen on startup on my Pismo after updating the latest Apple update for wireless three days ago...
    Can boot into safe mode (cmd-s on restart);
fsck -fy checks out no problems.
Boots as target disk, and hd is ok.
Boots from CD, and HD has no repair errors.
Tried holding the reset PMU button for 5-20 secs and then wait 5 seconds and restart
    Tried resetting the PRAM, cmd-Opt PR;
Can boot into Classic, also tried reinstalling Panther on second partition no problem, but it won't boot. Same GSOD.
Used Panther CD to repair Permissions.
Tried Reset Open firmware (cmd-Opt OF) typed "reset-nvram" and hit the Return key, then type "reset-all" and hit the Return key again. No effect.

Be aware that the last Airport update was for machines using Airport Extreme cards. Pismos do not use Airport Extreme cards, so the update is not only unnecessary, but likely caused the problem you had. Furthermore, it might also affect the ability of the Pismo to use wireless cards.
Airport updates are usually "optional" in the sense that you don't need to install them unless they are appropriate for your particular model and wireless needs. Before installing Airport updates carefully read the information to determine if the update is even needed. If it isn't, don't install it.

  • Install Panther "Install Mac OS X" will not launch

I backed up all data on the disk erased and zeroed out and partioned disk. I did this from a seperate HD.
Booting from a seperate HD running 10.4.8, using the original Panther disks ( don't ask why im reinstalling Panther) i double click the "Install Mac OS X"
nothing happends, i have trieda couple of different ways, boot in Safe Mode, zaped the PRAM, still nada.
Is there a diferrent approach to install, go thru each disk and install the various .pkg's? Use a utility like Pacifist.
I.m doing this because the drive may or may not appear on the dt. disk utility will not unmount disk nor will Tech Tool. Created a disk image as back up.
The first time i tried this (i did not install), but instead restored using the disk image, problem did not go away thats why i think this might be due to bad blocks or something like that so this time i want to start with a clean install, but i cannot launch the 1st CD by clicking on the install.
    Suggestions please

    Quicksilver 2002 G4 desktop duel 1gig   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   yes

    Hi Steve,
I wonder why you did such a complicated procedure. Boot from thee install DVD by holding down the c-key. Once the installer has started select "Disk Utility" from the MENU. Reformat/repartition the drive, quit disk utility and proceed with the installation.
BTW: The Quicksilver is able to boot into OS 9 natively and therefore all present and possibly future firmware upgrades are OS 9 installers only that require you to boot into OS 9 natively. You should consider reformating/repartitioning your hard disk using the OS 9 install disk. This will install the OS 9 hardware drivers and gives you the chance to reinstall OS 9 later in case you ever have to apply a firmware upgrade.
