Reinstall Server and restore mail

Our 10.4.9 server won't boot. It's been determined that there is something wrong when the boot drive mounts for read/write - it kernel panics. I have been able to mount the server drive on another mac via target disk mode and copy the entire hard drive.
If I erase and reinstall Mac OS X server on the internal drive, what is the easiest way to restore our mail services to as they were - how do I bring back the mail folders from the copy of the boot drive I made.
Thanks
Intel Xserve Dual 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Assuming you kept all default locations you will need to restore the contents of:
Complete directories:
/var/imap
/var/spool/imap
/etc/postfix
/etc/mail
/etc/squirrelmail
/etc/spam (if you have it)
Single files:
/etc/imapd.conf
/etc/amavisd.conf
/etc/cyrus.conf
/etc/clamav.conf
Make sure mail services are stopped while copying files over.
Also, since you had disk issues, most likely your mail database is corrupted and needs to be fixed.
To fix download mailbfr and run "mailbfr -f".

  • If I reinstall Windows and restore Firefox profile, will I have the same issues I did before?

I assume if I reinstall Windows and restore Firefox 14.0.1 profile with the profile folder I backed up, I will have the same issues as I did before I backed up and reinstalled. Presently, it sucks down memory (including flash plugin, 500 or 600MB, I save, close and reopen it with same tabs, it uses half of that), bookmarks drop down freezes and FF is generally sluggish. I have tried disabling addons but that doesn't help. I use ccleaner everyday. Will it be just like I never did a reinstall if I restore that profile? or is there a better way to reinstall portions of it at a time and check performance as I do. I dont want to dive deep into the bowels of FF and do intricate micro-tinkering if I dont have to; I have put up with it for this reason.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

  • How do i reinstall lr5 and restore the backup catalogues. Also preset folder, preferences, preview

Recently, i had to do a clean re-install of windows 7hp. And also i saved the needed data. of course i lost all of my downloaded software etc.  Their is a second drive on my computer with lightroom;its backups and a folder entitled all my photos. The same material for lightroom is backed up to an external hard drive.   How do i go about re-installing lr5 ,  and restore the catalogue back ups and the other folders.? I need a step by step set of procedures here as i  am a computer stupie.  Thanks for your help!

Have a few questions before i do the reinstall.  step #1 is to  reinstall from the original disk or to download from adobe"s website with proper serial #,regeistration #?    Step #2 is to restore the catalogues by double clicking on the latest catalogue backup?(or are all backup catalogue"s clicked)   When i do this backup will this transfer all of my parent folders, subfolders to the left panel of the library module in its original order?    Step 3. After the catalogue restore is done, will this leave this cat. folder   in the same disk under lightroom  or will this folder be deleted.  I have all of the lightroom folders backed up on an external hard drive.   Last step is to move all my pictures from the all my photos folder to lightrm. Is this correct?  How is this done?  By an import in the lightroom software using import, move.or copy on the top import toolbar.  I know i sound paranoid on doing these procedures correctly as i do not wish to lose any catalogues etc..   Thanks for your help!!
Not sure where you came up with these steps from
Step 1 ... either should work, but the download is the most recent version
Step 2 ... double-click on the latest catalog backup, yes
Step 3 ... Catalog is whereever you double-clicked on the backup file, you can move it whereever you want thereafter, using your operating system with Lightroom closed
Step 4 ... no moving of photos should be needed, definitely NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING, if the photos are not linked in Lightroom, then follow these instructions http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm and remember NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING NO IMPORTING and did I mention that you should not import your photos?
For future reference, you stated that you had Lightroom and its backups on the same drive ... do not do this ... backups must go on a different physical drive

  • Trying to add my thunderbird work email account to my new iphone, how do I find my "incoming mail server" and "outgoing mail server" host names?

Got a new Iphone 6 and I need to add my work thunderbird email account onto the phone. It is asking me for the host name of my incoming and outgoing mail server and I have no idea what this means- please help!

First off there is no such thing as a Thunderbird email account. Email providers issue email accounts and Thunderbird is email client software and not a provider.
You can look at the server settings in Thunderbird to see the settings it is using or you could get a list from your provider.
In Thunderbird go to the menu bar and select Tools-Account Settings-Server Settings to see the Inbound settings and Tools-Server Settings-Outbging Server(SMTP) for Outbound settings.
No menu bar with Tools showing? Press the alt key.

  • 1and1 server and sending mail

I have just changed servers for my companies website, and have had trouble setting up the iphone to send and receive mail. I have now sorted the receiving part, but cannot get it to send. I keep getting an error message "The server rejected one of the recipient's addresses. The message has been placed in your outbox"
has anyone else had problems like this? I had no problems with my old server, when i got the Iphone it set it all up from extracting the info from my MS Outlook.
I am using 1and1 and they have said to setup the outgoing as "auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk" which I have done, have i missed something?

The server rejected one of the recipient's addresses.
That suggests that there may be an error in one of the email addresses to which you are trying to send.
I am using 1and1 and they have said to setup the outgoing as "auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk" which I have done
The full 1&1 email Outgoing Mail Server settings should look like this:
Username should be your full email address.

  • Joined my Macbook to OSX Server and Entourage & Mail stopped coming in

I have OSX server (up to date) running but not configured for email at this time.
I joined my MB to the server and now Entourage and Mail refuse to retrieve or send email. I believe the error I'm getting is that the server is not found.
My wife has the new MBP 13.3 and is on the server with no email problems.

    Hi
Are you using the same DNS Server as your wife? If you're not and you've configured to use the Mac Server to resolve DNS (internally) then this could explain why you have the problem? If you've joined your client to the Mac Server to take advantage of the more Advanced Services available such as LDAP, Roaming Profiles, iCal etc then you would/should be using it to resolve DNS.
In which trying case to resolve an external domain that has nothing to do with the internal one could well result in mail services not working.
You could add the external Mail Server's external IP Addresses and Host Names to your internal DNS Service's zone files. Or add an external DNS Server IP Address to your DNS Server's field in the Advanced Section of the Network Preferences Pane for the affected client.

  • HT201210 Is anyone else having to constantly install and reinstall iTunes, and restore the iPod with each Synch?  THis is totally ludicrous.

It seems that every time I synch my iPod, I have no music.  Then, when I go to synch again, it tells me it needs to restore the iPod!!  It's the software's fault, I think.  Windows 8 and iTunes do not seem to be very compatible and I don't have a choice in terms of what iPod and what computer I'm using.  I just want the thing to work.  Thank you.

Some other users has reported the same there may be a but in iOS 8 or iTunes.
    Have you tried:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Manage Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

  • Backing Up And Restoring Mail

To my dismay I have to completely reinstall my operating system, which happens to be OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.4. I need to back-up mail to my external hard drive and then put it back the way it was after the OS install. I need to retain all my emails etc. Can someone please walk me through the process? Thanks so much for any assistance.

You can use the external drive for Time Machine if you have your media on it. However, Time Machine may try and back it up as well and thus it will take a lot of space.
When you restore using Migration Assistant from a Time Machine backup, you have the options to restore Applications, System Settings, and User Data. If you only check option #3 then you won't restore anything that could be causing application problems as you're having now. You will have to re-install applications though.
You haven't mentioned why you are reinstalling in the first place. Note that with Mac OS X 10.6, the installer actually will not erase any of your data. You have to explicitly know how to erase the boot disk (by launching Disk Utility via a menu and doing it that way). So if you need a re-install to fix an issue you could go ahead and do it.
Still, though... you really should have a backup plan. REALLY

  • Install from scratch 3 times Mavericks but cannot used my restore it will just start for ever. After first install and restore mail and link between folder and files didn't work anymore. Now cant see my disk in finder. Help?

First install through regular update : never finishing the start after automatic restart
First install from scratch: erase through disk utility, install OS X Mavericks (using Recover mode), restart ok - Used Migration Assistant to restore applications and data only - Mail crashed each 5 inutes and asked constantly for password of my 2 accounts, links between folders and files not OK and attaching a doc was complicated. I downloaded the update same problems
Second install from scratch: erase through disk utility, install OS X Mavericks (using Recover mode), restart ok - Used Migration Assistant to restore applications and data only and settings : never finishing the start after automatic restart
Third install from scratch: erase through disk utility, install OS X Mavericks (using Recover mode), restart ok - But no disk available in Finder
So far no Mac since 3 days ...
    Any help is welcome

Still struggling to understand why copying the entire root dir to a disk image and then restoring from that image did not, as expected, yield an identical system, and why I even had to reinstall after doing this.
Because there is a lot more going on under the hood than merely copying files.
The only way to do what you want is to use cloning software like Carbon Copy Cloner.
My  advice is to rescue your personal files to a regular non-TimeMachine  external drive, Zero erase the ENTIRE drive and install OS X fresh and  update, then your programs from original sources and files from backup.
Then, make a bootable clone and you can copy that as many times as you want and each one is bootable.

  • Advice needed for reinstalling iTunes and restoring my library from backup

I have some issues with my PC (Windows XP) that are not related to iTunes. But I am about to wipe my machine clean. Here is what I plan to do:
    0) Sync iPhone with iTunes
    1) De-authorize my computer with iTunes
    2) Wipe my hard drive, reinstall XP
    3) Reinstall iTunes from scratch
    4) Restore my music library (my documents) folders from an external hard drive.
    5) Authorize my computer again
I know that authorizing the computer is necessary in order to play purchase songs. Is there anything I have do in order to use applications on the iPhone? Any steps I have missed here?
    Advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You better ask this question over in the iPhone forum, too - I don't have an iPhone, so don't know where the iPhone apps are stored.
Anyway - the first thing to do is deauthorize your PC.
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/authorization/
Second, make sure you have a good backup of you itunes library database.
It's the ITL file mentioned here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
When you reinstall XP, make sure you use the same Windows username as before.
And make sure your exHD has the same drive letter as before.

  • Can't access old backups after reinstalling Lion and restoring with Migration Assistant

Scenario: App Store developed a random, repetitive, failure to update certain apps.  After trying two different solutions which only worked for a couple of weeks (including archive uninstall)  Apple Support and I decided to go the full hog and do a full Lion reinstall.  Did a full final backup with TM and proceded to reinstall from the recovery partition.  All went well.  I gave my new account the same name as my old original one (and this might be the root of the glitch I will describe).  When Lion was working again I used Migration Assistant to recover all the users, applications, and information.
As my new main account and my old one (coming from Mig Assist) had the same name, MigAssist asked if I wanted to merge them.  I said "yes".  All fine.  Everything was apparently there.
Later that day I tried to access my bank and discovered that my 1Password db was an old version.  I went to TM to retrieve the one from my pre-reinstall backup.  As I had mapped my mac back to the sparsebunddle file in TC it seemed I had access to all my files going back 1.5 years.  It showed my oldest backup as Sep 2010 and 700 gb used.  All seemed normal.
Unfortunately, the purple bars before the moment of reinstall are all faded and I can't retrieve any information from them. Nothing before that moment is available, not from the Finder or from withing any other application.
My new merged main user appears as "carlos 1"  when it should have been just "carlos".
Do you guys have any advice that could help me?  Thank you in advance.
    My TC is a 1TB 2009 one.

No, there is no "merge" option:
You can rename or replace, not merge.

You have two separate accounts now.
See Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation of what's happened (the blue and pink boxes) and a possible fix in the tan box -- but that won't work if you've done any backups since using Migration Assistant.
If you have done backups, your best bet is to do a full system restore, selecting the last backup from before you did the Migration.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.

  • Read a file in a server and create mail

    Hi experts,
I have a csv file in an AL11 BW server as following:
I would like to add some abap instructions into a BW abap to program to read the second line of this file and then create a dynamic address mail with the number or name present in the second line in this format name [email protected] .
So in my case that will be [email protected]
    Is that possible?
    Thanks
    Amine

if i want to recover the id from the itab in a workarea in order to build a mail. Should i do this?
    READ TABLE <ITAB> INDEX 1 into workarea1.
    Concatenate workarea1 ; @gmail.com into workarea2
Yes it'right, the table ITAB should have all values from a record (in your case the second one) of the file:
    SPLIT <STRING> AT ';' INTO TABLE <ITAB>
this comand move the data of a single record of CSV (so with ; as separator) in a internal table, every record of this table will be a information of the CSV record.
In your case the ID mail should be the first information of the second line, so your code is ok
    Hello;
Your file is corrupted, can you review it please?

  • Reinstall OS and restore files....First MAC!!

    Hi,
I am a MAC newbie! I have been using Windows for years and decided to buy a MB Pro. I have been playing with it and love it. Now i think i have done something as start-up times have dramatically increased.
I have checked log in items, reinstalled and preserved settings. But still the same.
Does this mean that something in my settings is slowing things down?
I have also run a time machine backup, if i completed an erase and install, could i restore just my data from Time machine, or will it again copy settings from the back up and install the problems all over again?
My main concern is iphoto, as I have spent hours grouping photos and adding faces and really do not want to loose all that!!
    Please help

    simontaylorjones,
Extraordinarily long startup times could be an indication that a disk error has occurred. One that can not be fixed by "rewinding" the journal, or by a Disk Utility repair of the file system (both of which occur automatically at startup, when necessary).
The first thing you should do is boot to your "Software Restore" disk #1 (hold down the "C" key at startup, with the disk inserted). When the installer loads, choose a language, then open Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu. Select your internal drive, then click "Repair" in the First Aid pane. Let us know if any errors are reported and/or repaired. Even if repairs are made and seem successful, this won't be a guaranty that everything is "alright." In fact, this routine is performed at each startup, as I mention above. The fact that you are still having problems is what's important here; the report of errors found or repaired is what we're looking for, not a successful repair.
Also found in the "Utilities" menu of the installer is the option to "Restore From a Time Machine Backup." By connecting your backup drive and choosing this option, you can restore your entire installation of OS X, along with all of your user data and applications. This first erases (formats) the internal drive, then restores your chosen backup.
If any disk errors are found, I will recommend that you use this "Restore" option. However, I also recommend that you choose to restore a backup from before these problems began. Disk errors damage files, even when repaired, and damaged files mean a damaged installation of OS X. This potentially damaged installation would have been duplicated in any backups made after the disk error, but backups prior to it should be fine.
Once you have restored the entire system from an earlier backup, you can use Time Machine while booted normally to bring your user data up to date, restoring selected folders within your HOME folder from the latest backups. So, you'll end up with an earlier installation of OS X, but entirely up-to-date user data.
