Reinstall SL - Lost Data & Documents

Good afternoon,
My father has a MBP with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed and in the past week it became slow to the point where it was hardly usable.  The only 3rd party apps were VMFusion and Microsoft Office.  He told me that he did the software update recently after months of putting it off.  I figured that it might have been an issue with doing the software update through the apple dropdown, because I had the same issue with my MBP months back, and it went away after installing the combo update.  I ended up downloading the combo update and in the middle of the update, the comp crashed.  From that point, I could never get back to the desktop, it always got stuck on the grey screen upon bootup.
Next, from there, I went step by step down the fix you mac found here...https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3353
None of the items worked until I did #8, Reinstall OSX.  After doing so, that got me back to the desktop, however, with every click, I would get the spinning wheel of death and nothing would open.
Now I just restarted again and it takes me to the login screen (name and password) and my dads account has vanished?  The computer was setup as a single user.  I went into the "reset password" when booting from install CD and it shows nothing about his account either.  The only account that is listed is the System Administrator.
The only time I can get into the desktop is if I sign in as the System Administrator, however when I do so, it does not show any of his documents.
The most important thing is that I retrieve the items that were in "My Documents" as they were pretty important to his business (which is why he should have been backing up in the first place).
I dont get how his account has vanished along with his documents after reinstalling, from what I understood, everything should have been left untouched.  Any help anyone can provide, I am greatly appreciative.
Thanks,

I get the spinning wheel of death

  • Is it possible to restore lost data from an app that was deleted then reinstalled?

I had a problem switching the accounts on ITunes and accidentally deleted an App, all of its data was deleted and when I repurchased the app(free app) I cannot access the games account. Their support won't let me solve it. Can I restore the lost data?

    I don't think you're on iOS 5, I think you're using iOS 6.  That's the latest version.
Unless you've used iCloud to back up your documents, you won't be able to restore them.  And for future reference, you don't have to uninstall Pages to update your iPad anymore.  Sorry about this.

  • IPad lost iPages documents for no known reason

My wife lost all of her Pages documents on her iPad (iPad 1) sometime over the past few weeks.  She uses Page version 1.7.2. Her iPad was not updated to have caused anything like this. I'm more appreciative of Mac systems and she naturally blames me. However, I don't use her iPad although I  try to support her.  How could either of us accidentally lost data and can we restore it?  I can't find them on her iPad, on iCloud or backed up on my Mac.
We have iCloud but it doesn't appear to be there either.  I know this is a wide open question but this problem has me very perplexed.  We have a network in the house and I run OSX 10.9.3 on my mid 2010 iMac. My wife's iPad is running iOS 5.1.1 which itunes says is the latest software.

It seems like you have checked all of the normal areas.  Go to Settings > Pages on the iPad and see if "Use iCloud" is on.  I know that you stated the documents are not on iCloud at this time, but this will confirm if that is where they were being hosted.  If that has been on the whole time and the documents are now missing from the iPad and iCloud.com, then I would contact Apple and tell them you have experienced iCloud data loss and need someone to see if they can help you recovery your files if possible.  Time is of the essence in this scenario.  http://getsupport.apple.com
If "Use iCloud" is not on indicating that the iPad was storing all documents locally on the iPad, then the only way to recover those files is to restore from a backup of the iPad.  iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

  • Hello, there are approximately three months I uninstalled firefox and lost some documents. Is there any way to recover them, now that I installed again?Thank you.

    most lost are documents...

If you mean files (personal data like bookmarks) in the Firefox profile folder and you had chosen to remove personal data when uninstalling Firefox then that data is lost.

  • Horrible time with backup! Lost data! Help!

I have been religiously doing auto-backup on to a remote hard drive.  But now I cannot seem to access any of those files at all.  It keeps saying I have no administrative permission to view the files.  Even when copied to my desktop, I can't use them to restore.
The issue that started this all is that I switched computers.  And every time I sync, the desktop program wants to add or delete about 1200 past calendar items.  I have been reticent to allow the sync to continue because I did not want to lose data, but today I said, "what the hell" and let it continue.  It deleted everything from BOTH the handheld and computer prior to May, when I started using the new computer.  So when I try to reinstall the older backup file to retrieve the lost data, now the program won't let me access the files I saved so religiously.
    Can anyone help me?  Thanks!!

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
It somehow sounds like a Windows permissions issue. Depending on your Windows OS level, you need to either be logged in to the PC with an account that has full administrative privileges and/or use the "Run As Administrator" option to launch DTM to attempt the restore.
    Good luck!

  • Can you recover lost data after reboot macbook pro?

my step-daughter rebooted her macbook pro  and it restored to it's original state
lost all her data/document's /photo's etc ... data was not backed up on a external hard drive.
is there a way to recover?

If she was installing a new OS and erased the whole disk, you will not be able to recover everything. You can try "Data Rescue". As long as you don't install anything new on the drive, you can link it to another mac and try to rescue partial files...

  • Lost data on my Mac after it got reset but my iPhone is still synced to the old version of my Mac?

So, during an awful visit to the Apple store in which the "genius" completely reset my Macbook Pro (10.8.5) because it decided to go "turtle mode" for no reason whatsoever, I lost all my data and files on it. After putting whatever I had backed up back on the Macbook, I put some new things on my iTunes and tried syncing the Mac's iTunes and my iPhone 5 ios7's iTunes. However my iPhone was synced to the older version of my Mac before it crashed and got wiped out. I got this message:
The iPhone “___” is synced with another iTunes library on “___”. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?
An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library.
Is there any way I can get my lost data back onto my laptop with my iPhone? Or if there isn't and I sync the new version of my Mac with the iPhone, will my iPhone lose any data to match my Mac?
    thanks

My current situation: I have soooo many texts on my iphone and I haven't deleted many because I need the information contained in them for future reference and for legal purposes.  I would really like to find a means and way to save them other than on the phone itself. I've done searches for various apps yet I'm not finding what I think I would need.  It appears Apple does not sync the texts between the iphone and my MacBook Pro.
Try the computer apps PhoneView (Mac) or TouchCopy (Mac & PC):

Thank you, but after an hour with apple support on the phone we came to the conclusion that the documents are lost... So the lesson is, don't trust icloud as a back up solution! A month worth of work down the drain...

If all your files are missing
You may have logged in as a different user, such as Guest. Open the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences. Your name should be at the top of the user list, under Current User. See also this support article.
If files are missing from one folder
Change the Finder view mode; for example, from icon view to list view, or vice versa.

If you did a Clean Install, the files are gone. If you did an update from Panther, the is a possibility there is an Archive Folder with all of your files in it.. the best way to find out, is looks at your hard drive space, if its small, you lost them.
