yes it is possible to reinstall Oracle.
I suggest that a different ORACLE_HOME directory be used.

[While Installing Oracle software facing "Error in GetCurrentDir(): 13" [ID 378393.1]|https://support.oracle.com/CSP/main/article?cmd=show&type=NOT&id=378393.1]
    Solution
In order to get rid of this problem, please check for the following.
    1. You are logged in as the oracle user and group which owns the oraInventory (if this is not the first install on this system)
    2. You have read/execute permissions on the source files/directories (CD-ROMor CD-ROM image)
    3. You have write permissions on the target directory (ORACLE_HOME)
    4. When the target filesystem for ORACLE_HOME is unmounted the directory for the mount point has rwx permissions for the oracle user
If this is the first Oracle software to be installed on this system you can ignore item 1 as it will create a new oraInventory with the correct permissions. For item 4, unmount the filesystem and "chmod 777" the directory used for the mount point, then remount the filesystem. Item 4 is actually a somewhat frequent issue on AIX.
If none of the above solves your problem, the only alternative left would be, to copy the Staging directory (Disk1 of Install) to /tmp directory and proceed with the installation.

You can download the file from

and install the same with ignoreSysprereqs option at command line.
However, for a certified combination, you need to download 10.2.0.5.0 patchset (patch 8202632) from Metalink and apply on top of this installation.

  • Windows 7 64 bit, Access 2010 32 bit, Oracle 10G client 32 bit, Oracle database 10.2.0.4 64 bit

I am trying to connect to an Oracle 10.2.0.4 database from Windows 7 OS - 64 bit using
Access 2010 32 bit and Oracle 32 bit client version 10.2.0.1 installed on PC.
My user requires a 64 bit Windows 7 OS for other needs.
Oracle ODBC driver is 32 bit from Oracle 32 bit client.
In Windows 7 OS 64 bit, ODBC DSN setup software is located in:
C:\Windows\system32\odbcad32.exe for 64 bit drivers - all DSN types setup and
C:\Windows\syswow64\odbcad32.exe for 32 bit drivers - USER DSN setup
When I run the ODBC Data Source Administrator, I see the Version number is 6.1.7601.17632
I setup a User DSN using the 32 bit odbcad32.exe with a 32 bit ODBC driver.
Our Oracle TNSnames.ora file has our standard entries which have worked for years
(Windows 7 OS 32 bit and everything 32 bit has connected for years too)
So when I configure an ODBC User DSN and leave all the default settings and press the TEST Connection button, it says it works.
But when I open the existng Access 2010 database (which does connect to Oracle in a Windows 7 32 bit PC environment),
    1. I go to Access External Data ribbon tab / Link to the Data Source by creating a linked table / press OK
    2. I select the Machine Data source = to the USER DSN name / press OK
    3. The Oracle ODBC Driver Connect Window opens with Service Name = USER DSN and User Name and it wants a Password
    4. I enter the correct password and I get the following error message:
    ODBC call failed
[Oracle][ODBC]{Ora]ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve the connect identifier specified
    (#12154) [Microsoft][ODBC Driver manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed IM006 0
             [Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttr failed (#0)
I have tried a quite a number of fixes:
I have gone into the PC registry and cleaned out most or all off the Oracle client keys and
reinstalled the Oracle 32 bit 10g client. It didn't fix the error.
I read about the Oracle instantclient-basic-win32-10.2.0.4.zip with ODBC modules but I have Windows 7 64 bit.
Anyone experienced a problem like this and have a fix?

    Thank you for your reply.
I did not get to try it because after I entered my question, I did a lot more internet Googling.
    I found this small comment:
“There's a known issue where you get a 12154 error message running 32 bit software on a 64 bit OS using client 10201, and
It should be resolved by patching the client to 10204, which you do by applying the 10204 database patch to it.”
I searched around for the 10.2.0.4 patch for 10.2.0.1 Oracle 32 bit client.
When I contacted my Oracle DBA to ask if he had that patch, he said that I should try the 11g 32 bit client on the Win 7 64 bit PC.
We have a 10.2.0.4 Oracle database but he said the 11g client should work fine.
I tried it and it solved the problem!
With so many settings, configurations and permissions involved in ODBC, I am inclined to think that I missed a setting but
it was a bug in the 32 bit client 10.2.0.1.
    Solved.

  • An issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on Ubuntu 10.04-64bit

    Hi,
I'm running into an issue while installing oracle 10g express edition on my Ubuntu 10.04-64 bit installed machine using oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb package. The issue actually came up when I was trying to reinstall the package after uninstalling it due to some problem I had with my login credentials. To elaborate further on it, the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script does not get created when I execute the debian package and thus i'm unable to configure the required credentials and stuff after the installation. I doubt whether this has something to do with the procedure I followed when uninstalling the previous package it. But what I did was just what's mentioned in the following [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/install.102/b25144/toc.htm] user guide published by oracle.
Another important clue would be, the platform of my machine is amd64bit although I'm dealing with an installation package preferred for i386. But I believe it's the only thing available in the oracle software download section. Hence I had to use the --force-architecture option to install it. But after reading some post published on this forum, I've figured out that it does not affect the usual execution of the software. Anyway,  I would greatly appreciate some help on this matter.

    Hi,
Finally I've managed to find a solution for this issue. Thanks a lot for all the replies.
Here's how I got rid of it.
Addressing all the facts one by one,
1.The problem of not getting the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe script generated was avoided
by removing all the configuration files that were previously created while installing
the product. The following command can be used to accomplish that task.
    *$ dpkg --purge oracle-xe*
2.Next, Initially the password I used during the configuration process was "admin".
Although I tried a couple of times installing the product providing the aforementioned
password, the web UI kept prompting "Invalid Credentials" message not allowing me
to login. But, this particular issue could be avoided by giving some other simple
    password.
Finally, got it working and once again thanks a bunch for taking the burden of
    replying this thread.
    Cheers,
    Prabath

  • Issues during reinstallation Oracle 10g express edition and Forms 6i

I've been racking my head over this issue for the past two three days. Exasperated, I tried searching in the forums but could not find a specific scenario like this.
I am facing issues while trying to get forms 6i to work with oracle 10g Express edition
i have windows XP home edition (installed service pack 2) and installed oracle 10g express edition as well as the oracle 10g express client and SQL developer on the same machine. The database started fine and I was able to use Enterprise manager.
After that I tried installing Forms 6i and whatever i try i am not able to connect to the database from Forms though I was able to connect easily from SQL developer. I used to get the error 12154 "TNS:could not resolve service name"
I dont know if Forms 6i expects the database connector string in some particular format. I searched on the net and found some people solved the issue by reinstalling the database software.
My machine name was complex so I changed it as well and reinstalled the software. Again the DB was fine and connections were fine but no way I could get forms to connect to the DB. All the time
I tried installing Forms to the same folder that Oracle express edition home in the hope that it might fix the problem. That only caused my database to crash. The oracle xe service shows as started but the Enterprise manager link does not work and it seems the database is down. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling client and server to no avail.
Has anyone gone through such a situation and solved this ? Appreciate your help.

The statement about XP Home is correct, but in this case I would say the initial problem (Forms and ORA-12154) is independent of that, it also happens in a supported environment. I think it's the old problem, a second Oracle home was installed, but tnsnames.ora containing the connect informations is located in the first home.
Either tnsnames.ora is copied from to <Second_ORACLE_HOME>\network\admin or the environment variable TNS_ADMIN is set system-wide to <First_ORACLE_HOME>\network\admin.
I think now it's necessary to create a clean machine (remove all Oracle components as explained in the database installation guide for Windows). Then repeat the installation , but XE and Forms 6i in different ORACLE_HOMEs.

  • Slow first connection using Oracle 10g xe and Visual Studio 2008

    {noformat}
    Good day,
I'm slightly unaccustomed to using forums, so bear with me.
My initial connection to the Oracle database takes approximately 30 seconds. It seems to be waiting for a connection before timing out and trying another connection which works, as all subsequent connections work immediately. I'm unsure how other people's responses in forums can help me due to the plethora of configurations, so here's mine. My comprehension of the oracle world is still growing, you'll have to explain the terms you're using for me, Hoping you can help.
I'm using Visual Studio 2008, set to use 32 bit debug mode, on a Windows 7 Pro platform. Also using Oracle 10g Xe, and have installed the 32 bit version of ODAC 11.2 (11.2.0.1) to aid making a connection from Visual Studio to Oracle.
I have a database set up and a user with system admin rights. This is all local for a programming project and will never see the light of day outside of my personal machine.
I am using code to connect, not the GUI. I wish to code this project completely without the aid of the GUI. so my connection string within Visual Studio C# is (pw/id hidden)...
    string xe = "Data Source=xe;User Id=xxxxx;Password=xxxxx;";
    OracleConnection conn = new OracleConnection(xe);
    My c:\devsuitehome\network\admin\sqlnet.ora file is this:
    # sqlnet.ora Network Configuration File: C:\DevSuiteHome\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (LDAP, TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT, ONAMES, HOSTNAME)
And my c:\devsuitehome\network\admin\TNSNames.ora file is this:
    tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: C:\DevSuiteHome\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
    Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    XE =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = xe)
    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = <machine name)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVICE_NAME = PLSExtProc)
Just for good measure, my tnsping xe shows:
    "Used paramter files:<br/>
    c:\devsuitehome\network\admin\sqlnet.ora<br/><br/>
Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias<br/>
    Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521)))(CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = xe)))
    OK (0 msec)"
So, how can I make that initial connection faster so I don't spend 15 years testing my application due to slow start-ups? :)
    Thank you.
    Kevin.

I have formatted my hard drive since my first post. I was running window 64 bit with a higher version of the ODAC and that proved to crash my machine with faulty error messages about memory. I have reverted to a previous version of the ODAC tools and everything works very smooth now. Still the connection time is consistently 20 seconds or longer on the first attempt.
Just a little more information.. I am currently taking a college course with 15 other students, as you can tell by the impersonal machine name, where programming using visual studio 2008, and Oracle 10g xe is expected. All of us are using a 64 bit environment and we all have difficulties cutting down the load time of making the first connection to Oracle. Some people are longer making the connection, but none are shorter.
One other note. After the first connection is made, taking 20 or more seconds, and is closed, all subsequent openings of the connection are instantaneous, for all of us.
If there is ANYTHING more I can get for you, please let me know. With my environment stable as it is, I will not need to format or change any information for the foreseeable future.
Here is the information you requested
1 The connection method I am using, I have chosen the manual connection for you, however the delay exists if the connection is made through the GUI as well.
Historically, I am getting slow connection speeds through adding the connection through the GUI or by a manual connection. Here is how I am doing it manually. I have the connection being created in 20 seconds, which is the best I can get.

I fought for weeks about the ODAC version 11.2.0.1 that you see in the previous post, and that would be a whole new thread. Suffice it to say I have a reliable environment to program in with this 10.2.0.1.0 version that I am running now, and the connection time has not changed, it is still minimum 20 seconds load time, sometimes up to 25.

  • My Oracle 10g XE does not start anymore on Win XP

    Hello,
I have a problem I do not understand at all. I've successfully installed Oracle10g XE on my Win XP SP2 about one year ago and every works well.
The last time (6 months ago) I've started my default XE, it works well.
Today, it does not works anymore ! My Windows service called "OracleServiceXE" does not start anymore. I have an error 1053.
So I try to start manually my DB using sqlplus :
    sqlplus /nolog
    connect / AS SYSDBA=> I obtains ORA-12560
The listener service starts well and seems to be OK.
I tried to set ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID without success.
I checked my sqlnet.ora, tnsname.ora. Everything seems to be OK.
I stopped my antivirus software, stopped my firewall.
I checked I am still in the Adminstrator Group.
Finally, I tried to reinstall Oracle 10g XE and it does not work anymore either ! The XE instance creation failed
    DIM-00019: service creation error
    O/S-Error: (OS 1053)
    Now, I am lost.
Does anybody have any suggestion to solve my problem ?
Many thanks by advance for any help you could give.
    Regards
    Cedric

    Yes, I think so.
But what ? Many things change in 6 months (Windows fixes, software fixes, RAM upgrade, screen change ...)
And the logs I found in oracle cannot help me to have an idea.
    Only listener.log, css.log and sqlnet.log have changed.
I have found the following error in sqlnet.log :
Fatal NI connect error 12560, connecting to:
    (DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=BEQ)(PROGRAM=oracle)(ARGV0=oracleXE)(ARGS='(DESCRIPTION=(LOCAL=YES)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=beq)))'))(CONNECT_DATA=(SID=XE)(CID=(PROGRAM=E:\Langage\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\BIN\oradim.exe)(HOST=PHOENIX)(USER=gerardce))))

I really don't knwo where to start. And I would like to be sure to save my data (via export or something like that).
Is it possible to have more trace somewhere that can help me ?

    Cedric
