Reinstall/Upgrade PowerMac G5

A few months ago I bought an Apple PowerMac G5 from an auction from a company that didn't survived the crisis.
It's a very nice piece of equipment, but I can't make full use of it because it has a admin password that nobody knows...
So I would like to reinstall or upgrade it (I didn't get any cd's with it). The problem is that it has an non-intel processor.
Specs (all from system profiler):
Model: PowerMac7,2
OS:Mac OS X 10.4.11
Processor: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
Memory: 4.5GB
More specs if needed.
So my real question is, how can I reinstall/upgrade my PowerMac, and what OS version can I use (highest). I would like to have a clean (new) mac after the install, because there is still a lot of crap on it from the last owner.
I hope somebody can help me, thanks in advance.

You might try the following:
Boot into single-user mode by holding down the cmd-S key combination at power up until you get to the black Unix terminal screen.  Once there, type the following three commands:
/sbin/mount   -uw   /   <enter>
rm  /private/var/db/.AppleSetupDone  <enter>
shutdown -r now  <enter>
What should happen after the third command is a reboot into the Welcome interrogation, by which you will set up a new primary account with admin privileges.  You will be able to define the password for that account and administer the computer as if it had just had the system installed.  Be sure to include the period in the .AppleSetupDone filename.

  • Can't reinstall upgrades due to OS X / Classic 9.2.2 / FCP 1.2.5 problem

I had to wipe my HD and reinstall Tiger (plus OS 9.2.2 classic). To reinstall my upgrade copy of FCP 4.0 HD I also needed to reinstall my original 1.2.5. full purchase copy from way, way back when (2000).
But now I'm stuck because 1.2.5. won't start and let me complete the registration as required by the upgrade packages. With classic running, I get an error message saying "That application or control panel is not supported by classic."

Alas, the 3.0 upgrade installer says "Registration error (2): You must have a registered copy of final cut pro installed. Please reinsert final cut pro from its origional CD, launch it and complete the registration screen before running this updater."

  • Reinstall Upgraded version of CS5 on a new computer.

I have been trying to reinstall my CS5 UpGrade software on a new computer today and it has been a complete hassle.  I have had two chat session with people in India and with no success.  The last session ended with them asking me to install my Upgrade CS5 into a folder on my "C" drive by making a new folder on the drive.  This did not work!!!!!!!!!.  I still get the same problem, the installer fails.  I have installed Support Advisor and followed its instructions and end up at the same point without success.  The chat case customer ID number is 1098256450.  Can someone help????? Do I have to buy some paid support, what do I have to do.  I need CS5 running today.   HELP!!!!!

    Hi Jack,
I went through your interaction notes and some of those error messages show up if there is a problem with permissions.
Tough you have admin privileges on your computer, it is possible that the installer is unable to access some of the folders to which files need to be copied.
Creating a new user account will reset all permissions. Hence it is worth a try to install the application from a new user account.
You can create a new user account from the control panel.
If the application successfully installs, you can delete the new account and will still be able to access the application from your existing account.

  • Network and Upgrade PowerMac 6500

I own a PowerMac 6500 that could be considered all but new. It was never used very much by the original owner. It came originally with OS 8.X, but it has been upgraded to OS 9.1. I believe this is as far as this computer can be upgraded.
I'm not that Mac knowledgeable, my Leopard iMac is the first Mac I've ever owned.
I would like to add this computer to my home network, but the computer is at the other end of the house. I occasionally use the computer, and for file transfer I have to use the old "sneaker net" method using Zip 100 disks. That method is becoming a PITA since the ZIP units are/have disappeared.
And I would like to keep the cost as low as possible. This is a project of convenience, not of necessity.
My router is a Netgear RangeMax wireless router, model WNR834Bv2.
There are no ethernet ports on the rear of the computer.
I would prefer to run an ethernet cable, but when I think of the work it would take, I'm not particularly fond of that idea. So, I'd be willing to do a wireless connection if the cost doesn't get out of hand.
What would I need to buy to connect to the network, both wired and wireless?
Anyone have suggestions as to where to find the needed hardware?
The computer has 94mb of RAM, which I would like to increase. I do have a lot of old RAM chips from old PC's laying about. Any chance any of these extra RAM chips I have would work? Could I actually swap some of the chips and turn the computer on without risking any damage?
Any help and advice would appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Ken

    Hello Ken,
The router I have for the network is also wireless so I shouldn't need a bridge. I use the wireless portion for updating my cell phone. All I think I need is a card in the computer.
A wireless Ethernet bridge does not replace the wireless router. The router acts as a base station. The wireless Ethernet bridge in this case (connected by cable to the Ethernet network card in the computer) operates as a wireless adapter, and connects wirelessly to the base station.
Instead of using a wireless Ethernet bridge combined with an Ethernet network card, it would in principle be possible to use one single (PCI) wireless card in the computer. However, the problem can be finding drivers for the operating system in question. A wireless Ethernet bridge device does not have this problem.
I was just given a Netgear wireless bridge, and this has me wondering, would it also serve as a receiver as well as a transmitter?
    Which model is it?
A wireless Ethernet bridge can both send and receive, just as a wireless network card.
I also have an old D-Link Wireless USB adapter, but the computer does not have a USB port either.
Even if you could install a USB (PCI) card, you would probably face the same problem as above with the drivers for the wireless USB adapter.

  • Photo shop reinstall upgrade cs 3 to cs5 invalid license

Help Please.  Our mac computer had problem so had to start fresh and reinstall all of the software.  The apple support folks were great and almost all was reinstalled without a lot of fuss and bother.  The lightroom install was fantastic.  Photoshop has been another matter.  We have been long term photoshop users.  I tried the same approach as with lightroom.  Downloaded and tried to install the CS-5 software put in the serial id that was fine, put in serial number for cs3, it said it was invalid.  Installed cs-3, the system didn't see it.  Spent hours trying to find a solution online.Nothing worked.  Tried registering the old cs3 under my husbands adobe ID - get an error the product is already registered.  Tried under my id, same error message.
Tried to contact customer service.  It looks like it will cost money even if a glitch in the adobe serial id process.  Suggestions on getting this resolved will be much appreciated.

I use a PC on a PC when you install  a version of Photoshop on your machine and use an Upgrade Serial number if the product being upgraded is not installed on the machine you can verify that you have a licence for the product being upgraded by entering your serial number for that product.  If you have lost your serial number for CS3 or and other prior version of Photoshop you can retrieve them form Adobe.com. Sign in to Adobe.com with your userid and passwird the use this link the page should retrieve your products. https://www.adobe.com/account/my-products-services.html When you see your list of products click on one the can be upgraded to CS5 you serial for the product should the be displayed. You only need one valid prior version serial number.

  • Reinstall upgrade.

I had Photoshop CS5 as an upgrade from CS.  My computer crashed, I need to reinstall CS5. Reading the forums, I found out I could download CS2 because the activation server is down for CS and CS2. I did so and it is installed. However, CS5 will not install as it says the serial number for the CS2 is not from a qualifying product. What can I do?

Chances are you need to be using the serial number from your CS purchase.  If you are unable to work things out you need to contact Adobe Support either by chat or via phone when you have serial number and activation issues.
Here are some links to help make contact:

PS - you diod not need to install CS/CS2 in order to install CS5.  You only needed the serial number.

  • Reinstalling upgrade version of Elements on a new laptop.

I have version 7 followed by upgrades to version 8 then an upgrade to version 9. Do I need to reinstall all of these od just the upgrade to version 9?
    Thanks
    Dave

Just install the Elements version 9 and keep the serial number handy for the old version , there is no such requirement to have the old version application installed on the computer for installing the upgrade.

  • Upgrading  Powermac for aperture/final cut

    Hi there,
I have a 1.8ghz powermac g5 (single processor) with 1.5gb of RAM, 2* 200gb internal Hard drives and an ATI Radeon XT 128mb. I have recently bought Final Cut and Aperture however performance is pretty slow on these programs with lags on aperture and blocky/unresponsive video on final cut. Playing stand alone High -definition video is also a jerky affair. Although i know i have a slow processor, i cannot afford to replace my hard drive, but could afford a couple of hundred pounds to upgrade. Can anyone recommend which of these would be most beneficial:
    1) Upgrading graphics to Radeon x800 XT 256mb
    2) Upgrading RAM to 3gb
    3) buying external SATA hard drive and RAID'ing it for faster hard drive speeds?
OR, will none of these particularly help me and am i stuck with saving for a whole new Mac?
    Kind Regards,
    MAtthew LLoyd

What does "software to use with my Final Cut Pro" actually mean? Is it FCP? or FCP X?
iPhoto and Aperture are both equally compatible with FCP, but if it's the older version you use then you'll be exporting from your Photo Manager and bring the images into FCP.
If you have FCP X either will make images available to it via the Media Browser in FCP X.
    So, no difference there.
Lightroom has no interaction with either version of FCP, so you'll be exporting from that to the Finder and then adding to the FCP project.
As for which is better - that's really personal preference. It might help if you explain what it is you dislike about iPhoto, and what you're actually looking for in a Photo Manager.

  • Upgrade PowerMac G4 model m8493

    Dear All ...
actully im new in Mac world .. im Microsoft guy and i would like to go deep inside Mac world ...
actully i have an old Mac desktop machine PowerMac G4 733 MHz and i wolud like to upgrade procssor and RAM plus VGA card so any one can help me to know exactly up to how i can upgrade processor and RAM ...
    Thanks

Hi! You have a Quicksilver G4. You have 3 ram slots into which you can stick 512mb sticks of ram for a total of 1.5gb. You can find a processor HERE and they have a lot of other good Mac stuff. I'm a Sonnet person myself and use THIS one. HERE is the ram page for your machine. And HERE is the video card page for your machine. Just don't buy something that not "mac compatible". If you need larger drives you may want to add a SATA card such as THIS one. Happy computing! Tom

  • Upgrading Powermac G5 Processor?

Is it totally irrational and impossible to want to upgrade my processor on my Powermac G5? its a 1.8 from early 2005 and I need it to be faster. Any hope? Or am i screwed?

is there no way possible to strip the guts and replace it with new parts to make it work?
Well, you'd have to purchase a new motherboard in addition to the upgraded CPUs. Likely a new power supply as well. Those costs alone will run you close to, if not more than, the price of a new iMac or Mac Pro.

  • Reinstalling upgraded PS CS6 on new mac. Msg is Serial valid, not find suitable application

Two years ago I purchased an upgrade to Photoshop CS6 & Lightroom and installed them on my mac laptop.  They have worked fine.
Now I am trying to install PS CS6 on a new laptop, using the serial number registered with Adobe.  I receive an error msg
that says my serial number is a valid serial number, but the installer doesn't find the application(PS CCS6), although the photoshop application version 13.0
that I downloaded from adobe _is_ on my drive.  I also uninstalled PS before reinstalling, I also tried just copying from my old mac.  no luck.  Do you think the
the problem is that I am using an upgraded product?  I did buy it!  Do I have to find the old version from long time ago and upgrade it on my new laptop?

  • Grey restart message when upgrading PowerMac G4 10.1.5 to Tiger

I'm trying to do an erase and install on my aunt's PowerMac G4 to upgrade her 10.1.5 OS to her newly purchased Tiger. The install DVD works fine up until the actual progress bar of the installation.
So far it's made it to 2, 4, 6, 9, 10, and 15 percent complete before freezing and displaying a grey message stating to restart the computer.
Also, several times during that restart, the grey restart message comes up again.
I've tried looking in the firmware updates (not sure if that has anything to do with it) but I couldn't track down if her model of G4 needed one since I'm not familiar with the terms of "Quicksilver" and I'm not sure if it has digital audio, etc.
Is this just a case of a bad install disc? Is there something else I should be checking or updating first?
Any info and help is greatly appreciated,
    -Betsy Tao

  • New hard drive, reinstall upgrade from CS2 to CS4 Question

    Hi,
I upgraded my CS2 to CS4 Extended early this year, my hard drive just bit the dust and I have to re-install the CS4, will I have to call customer service again to get my copy of CS4 Extended activated, again?
    Thanks, Charles Grubbs / futurexboy

Like you, I've completely recovered from a hard drive failure - one of two in a RAID 0 arrangement in my case.  Windows Backup restored it completely, likewise without re-registration, etc.  A key difference is Windows Backup runs for me late at night, in a set-it-and-forget-it fashion (my computers stay on 24/7).  I don't have to boot up a separate system to run it.
But I don't doubt Image is a good product.
It's good to have good alternatives to choose from.
