My hard drive was replaced last week on my macbook pro.  The geek squad from Best Buy backed up all my information prior to replacing the hard drive.  They reinstalled everything on the new hard drive including iTunes.  When I opened I tunes, i had some but not all my songs listed.  All my playlists and purchases were missing.  I attempted to sync my iPod so my playlist and information would be reinstalled but iTunes does not recognize the iPod to allow it to sync.

  • Pavilion 7 Bad Hard Drive, How to reinstall HP software on new Hard Drive?

Hi, I have a 2 1/2 year old p7 1247cb running Windows 8 Pro x64, just out of warranty, and the Hitachi internal hard drive is failing (eightforums.com helped me with diagnostic tools).  I am replacing the HD and want to reinstall the whole system that was on the machine when I bought it.  It came with Windows 7 and a promotion for free upgrade to Windows 8, which I did.  I have my Windows 8 Key Code and have borrowed the installation files for Windows 8.
This is the first time I've done this sort of replacment, and I am wondering whether it's possible, or even desirable, to get all the manufacturer-installed drivers and software back on the new HD, or should I just let the Windows install search for all drivers for me?
Until the HD started failing, this was by far the most reliable desktop setup I've ever used, and I am wary about whether the new system, with cobbled-together drivers, will be as stable and reliable as what I had with the manufacturer-installed software and drivers,
Plus, as an aside, I want to vent for a moment that it seems crazy to me that a hard drive should start failing after just 2.5 years!  This bundle was sold as a gaming system (it's never used for gaming, but the specs were what I wanted), and while it gets heavy use (mostly streaming video, wordprocessing, photo/video -editing and storage), I was surprised to encounter a hardware issue only 6 months past the warranty.
    Any assistance is appreciated.

    Hi,
Hard drives are mechanical and do fail.  It's quite common in the industry and not just with HP.
Be sure that the new hard drive is not an advanced format hard drive and is not greater than 2TB.
Back up your data to external media if you can. If not then you will need to later use for backups.
Be sure to create the external HP recovery media (this should have already been done right after you received your PC).If you don't have the external recovery media then order it from HP. HP Recovery Disks. Performing a HP System Recovery with Windows 7
Replace the hard drive and then boot up the external HP recovery media and recovery your PC back to a factory day one condition.
Now you can reinstall Windows 8 using your "borrowed Windows 8 media".
There may be other ways of installing Windows 8 but I have given you the text book method.  A generic key method, mentioned by me on this forum long ago and just recently revisted by another forum member may work.

  • I had a computer crash and Hard drive data lost, so I reinstalled Itunes on my new hard drive and now cannot locate ALL of the purchases I had done in the past.

I thought that ALL itunes purchases were held on the Apple server for itunes.
When I reinstalled my itunes on my new hard drive, there were NO histoical purchases on my itune account.
    Any thoughts to a solution.
    Thanks

Make sure you have at least iTunes 10.3.1, then go to the iTunes Store, log into your account, and click the new Purchases link under the Quick Links. The new iTunes in the Cloud service may allow you to re-download your purchased content (music, videos and TV shows not available for re-downloading in all countries at this time; movies and audiobooks not available for re-downloading at all yet). You can also do this from an iOS device.

  • How can I reinstall Mountain Lion on new hard drive?

I've had to install a new hard drive as old one was failing.
Have loaded Snow Leopard from disc onto the new drive but can't install Mountain Lion which I was running prior to drive failure; very frustrated.
    Have tried several options.
    1. Tried to reboot from OS X Utilities but whenever I restart, holding the cmd + R keys, I can only ever get the standard screen. I've tried pressing keys early in restart, later in restart, keys on either side of the keyboard, cmd + alt/option + R but still can't get to the OS X Utilities.
    2. Having given up on 1 I've tried to download ML from my purchase history in iTunes. I can see the purchase recorded but there appears to be no way to get to a reload option - at least not in the iTunes loaded from Snow Leopard
    3. I tried downloading ML updates, hoping that might allow me to bypass 1 and 2. The download wasn't recognised by my machine.
    4. I've be willing to just buy the **** OS again from scratch but iTunes won't allow me to do that either, at least not using my current Apple ID.
Does anyone have any bright ideas? I hate bloody computers.

How old is your Mac, if it came with 10.6 installed it is too old to have Internet Recovery (command-option-R) And as it has a new hard drive you won't be able to use Recovery (command-R) either until a new copy of Mountain Lion is installed and ceates a recovery partition on the drive.

Your HD wouldn't be formatted as case-sensitive, would it?
    Beyond that, details are needed:

  • Cant reinstall osx lion on new hard drive

I recently have been having problems with my 2007 Macbook 2,1 (yeah, I know it's old but it works...or worked anyway) taking forever to boot up.  So, I backed up all of my data to an external drive, erased the drive and then attempted to reinstall osx lion (which was the current os on the machine prior to erasing) via the internet recovery option as I no longer have the original start up disc.  The progress bar gets all the way to the end and then just takes me back to the main OSX utilities page.  Tried reformatting the drive again and same thing.  So then I resorted to creating a bootable thumb drive.  I booted back into OSX utilities via this drive and tried to reinstall this way only to get an error message that it cant download additional files needed to install osx.
Next up, I used a borrowed mac, redownloaded the OSX installer from the app store and installed it on an external drive.  I then booted my machine from the ext. drive into OSX lion, downloaded the installer again and attempted to install it on to my HD only to get an error message that the file may be corrupt or may have been tampered with.  At this point, i went to the Apple store.  The guy ran some checks but ultimately was also unable to reinstall the os.  He even tried going back down to 10.6.8.  So he told me this was a sign that the hard drive was bad and that they have no way of actually diagnosing it on a machine that old.
So, I went and bought a new WD 320G internal drive to replace the "bad" one in the machine.  I then went through all of the steps above again and still have had no luck getting the os back on the machine.  So at this point I am at a total loss.  Is the computer just dead or is there anything else I could possibly try?

Did you prep the new drive correctly? You also need to install Snow Leopard on the new drive and update it to 10.6.8.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
In the following you can skip the part for partitioning and formatting if you've done the above already.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Reinstalling Windows 7 to New Hard Drive with only the Win 7 Upgrade Disc?

So I have an e9180t which like clockwork freezes up after about an hour or two after booting up.  I thought it might be the curse of the bad motherboards they came with,  but I am hoping it is something else so testing everything I can.  I noticed it does not freeze up when booted in safe mode with networking.  The hard drive did fail the SMART test so I am wondering if it's time to replace it and if that has something to do with the crashing.   I can move cursor,  but no apps will open and eventually everything becomes unresponsive causing be tohit the power button to reboot.   I already stopped all unnecessary start up programs and it still will freeze in non safe mode.
The PC came with Vista and I believe that's what is on the backup partition on the HD.  I do have the Win 7 Upgrade disc from HP.  My questons are-
    1.  If I buy a new HD will the 7 upgrade disc be enough to install full version of Win 7?
    2.  Anything else I need to do when I install new HD besides reactivate Windows?
    Thanks.
    This question was solved.

    Hi Mike,
Did you create an HP recovery disc set for reinstalling the factory image when the HDD is replaced?
It sound like you may have a problem creating the recovery discs now.
A Smart HDD test failure points to a failing HDD. The symptoms you are experiencing are most likely caused by this fact. You may also have a motherboard or other hardware problem.
You have the Win 7 Upgrade disc and product key.
I am fairly sure the Win 7 upgrade has to be initiated from within Win Vista. The Win 7 upgrade is a full install of Windows so that is not the problem. But it may not run setup unless you start the upgrade in Win Vista. Normally a Win 7 upgrade is started within the current operating system, Win 7 setup validates the existence of a qualifying operating system, and then prompts a reboot to finish the upgrade installation.
You can replace the HDD and try to install Win 7 cleanly. If that fails and you don't have the Vista recovery discs you can purchase an HP recovery disc set here. There are three different builds available. Select the one that matches the factory installed operating system.
You may have one other issue upon replacing the HDD with a newer Advanced Format HDD. Please see this HP Support document for more information.
If you cannot install the Win 7 upgrade cleanly or Win Vista because of the Advanced Format HDD issue, you may have to purchase an OEM copy of Win 7.

  • HT201272 How do I reinstall Lion on a new hard drive?

My hard drive crashed on my mid 2009 Macbook Pro a few months ago.  I've since upgraded to a new Macbook Retina for use as my main computer.  Yesterday I fixed the hard drive in the Mid 2009 but I would really like to reinstall OSX Lion.  How do I do it?  I purchased Lion from I tunes on the computer that I would like to reinstall it on.
    All the best.

    Hey Old TIme
You should be able to do this if you have the Mac App Store on your computer. Just go there and check your purchases. So as long as you are running 10.6.8 you should be able to get this done. If you do not, you can create a Recovery Disk Assistant on a USB Drive from your MacBook Pro Retina. The steps are outlined in the article below.

When the computer starts I only have the recovery mode.
When I try to re install lion with the usual recovery mode, everything is ok until I enter my apple ID, then the procedure stops and I have an alert saying that "This item is temporarily unavailable, try again later".
    Thx!

My app did the exact same thing. It is still unavailable on the App Store and when Rue La La's site directs you to download their app, the "not available in the U.S. message appears. This happened to me last night. The app wasn't working, I deleted it and was just going to reinstall but was unable to find the app. I figured it was some glitch but I have tried multiple times this afternoon to no avail.

If you originally downloaded it thru Adobe, then that will be your only option to download it - thru your account.  If it is not provided as a link, there is likely nothing anyone can do here to change that.
