Reinstall Windows XP - What LR-files do I backup?

Sorry if this has been covered. Been surfing around searching for an answer to this all evening but can't find anthing better than this link about LR Preferences and other file locations (http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=333660).
What else do I need to think of? I run LR from a Windows XP SP2 laptop with +10,000 photos scattered on internal and external as well as network drives. I reinstall for several reasons but the most important is my own stupidity not using Ghost as much as I should for the last couple of years and installing and testing dodgy software. That's murder for XP!
So now I've worked on large proportion of my photos in LR and obviously do not want to lose this. I've put in keywords, IPTC, ranked, developed, etc. What do I need to back up and what is the procedure for not having to do all this work again when I have reinstalled Windows?
Thanks for any help on this issue.

Thanks Don. Sure there's nothing else I need to backup? Will do a Ghost just in case, but good to know anyway. Another Q comes up, reinstall procedure. Should I just do a clean reinstall and then just replace the db that LR creates in the process with the one from the backup, or is there anything else I need to think about?
You're absolutely right Judith. It has to do with a number of issues. One of the more important ones is an exterenal drive that isn't performing as I would like. It's a Lacie Ethernet Disk mini 500GB, which I was going to use for photos and nothing else. A very nice feature is that it is capable of being a USB2-drive and an Ethernet drive at the same time. I copied all my photos to the new Lacie drive organised it very nicely into a nice folder tree and started importing photos in LR, only to find that the drive is painfully slow in USB mode, even though it says connected at 459mbps. As an Ethernet drive I would understand if it was a bit slow, but as USB?!?!.
So there I was spending a lot more time importing than planned and I still had to use LR to edit some photos. Working with photos off the new Lacie proved to be a nightmare even worse than importing them in the first place. So I had to move the photos I needed to work on back to a normal USB2 drive to actually get some work done. Every now and then when I'm travelling I bring my Laptop instead of my Epson P-3000 and import shoots to the internal drive and then move them to the old Lacie USB2 drive when I get back home. Therefore, I have photos on 3 different drives, half of the imported and half of them not. A real mess, thanks to a drive that didn't perform as well as I thought it would.
Backup of all this is done automatically to a couple of Maxtor Ethernet drives incrementally every week and fully every month, so data should be fairly safe.

  • I just reinstalled windows on my computer and couldnt save backups.

As the question asked in the topic.
How do i get my list of apps again?

Not sure what you mean by you couldn't save backups.
All iTunes content on your iPhone - all music, movies, tv shows, etc., and 3rd party apps should be in your iTunes library on your computer, and your iTunes library should be included with your computer's backup along with all other important data such as document and photos - stored on an external drive or some other external media used for backup purposes.
You need just one backup, which should be updated as the first step before reinstalling Windoze. Since this won't be the last time to pay one of the many Microsoft taxes by having to reinstall Windoze, follow the instructions included with this link for including your iTunes library with your computer's backup.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content from an iPod, iPad, or iPhone that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only.
First you need to re-authorize your computer with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so. With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.

  • Sync problem after reinstalling windows

Last week I had Windows XP with the latest version of iTunes and my iPod could sync without any problems. But after I installed Windows 7, even if I have the same iTunes version, it won't sync anymore. I even tried a reset on the iPod and reinstalling iTunes, nothing works. I don't even get an error message. All it says is this:
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. An internal device error occured.
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. A folder was specified instead of a file.
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. An unknown error occured (0xE8004006).
The iPod 'Vicky' cannot be synced. There are too many files open currently.
Another one with a duplicate file, but I can't get it to appear right now.
It's always a different one. And sometimes iTunes even crashes and I have to reopen it.
    What should I do?

have chosen to manually manage my iTunes library rather than copying all these MP3s to the iTunes folder.
Do you mean you checked *Manually manage music and videos* when the iPhone is selected? This is completely sepearate from managing yoru library. This allows you to manually manage the content on the iPhone.
Can I backup iTunes without actually making a backup of all my music files?
Yes. Copy /Music/iTunes/folder to the external drive.
My problem is that after reinstalling Windows my iPhone now wants to erase itself
So you have already reinstalled Windows?
If so, you cannot backup anything that is not there since you you already erased it when you reinstalled Windows.
BEFORE you reinstall Windows, you need to Deauthorize iTunes and backup /Music/iTunes/folder and all your media.

  • Formating and Reinstalling Windows Without a Recovery CD

I do not have access to my recovery cd as I am currently overseas, and im looking to format and reinstall windows. What would be the best way to do this? Are the recovery cds completely integral to the reinstallation of windows?
I just dont want to do the reinstall and find I have no screen etc.

    Hi
Well, if you have no Recovery CD you can install the Windows OS from the original Microsoft Windows CD. Then you can try to download the all necessary Toshiba drivers from the Toshiba download page.
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp
But note: You should update the drivers in the right order. The drivers are placed in the right order and this is very important for the new installation.

    Hi,
Have you created the Recovery on the USB?  If you haven't, instructions for doing this are on the link below.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c01867124
Once created, the bootable USB Recovery can be used whether you can load Windows or not - simply insert the USB and restart to boot from it and start the recovery process ( just as you would if you were using recovery discs ).

  • HPG62-Reinstalled Windows & Sucessfully Recovered Files...Now What?

    Hello,
Now that I have my recovered files, including program files and my documents I don't know what I should do. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
I have reinstalled MS Office (did this and upgraded to the latest version of Office before the recovery) because at first I was trying to recover improperly. But now everything is there in C: System Recovery Documents.
I want the documents associated with the MS Office Suite to be back where they were, most importantly for Outlook; old mail, contacts, etc. as well for OneNote. I know that the Word and Excel files will open when I chose them.
When it comes to other programs, they are listed but I'm not clear what I should do with them and if I have to reinstall each program and then move particular files or not. ???  Most importantly for Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat Pro. Those folders are there, but the actual programs are not.
I don't want to make a mess of what's now new and clean on my system after the reinstall by just moving program files and potentially rendering programs inoperable.
    I have found:
    C:\System Recovery Files\2013-11-09 002654\C\Users\JP\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\14.0\OneNoteOfflineCache_Files
    Do I move those somewhere?
    Also found:
    C:\System Recovery Files\2013-11-09 002654\C\Users\Jonah Page\Documents\Outlook Files
In there is a list of my email addresses saved as Outlook Data Files
I haven't tried to even open Outlook yet, or try to use old data files to restore my email accounts, and not sure if doing that would restore my old files withing Outlook.
Also, not as important but I would like to restore my old bookmarks in Firefox. Not sure how to make that happen either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

    Vanessa,
It sounds like you want to Restore backups made using the Recovery Manager.
The following document explains how to do that:
Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows 7)
The method is pretty straight forward, although the actual file recovery can take some time.  How long it takes depends on the speed of your system plus the size and number of files that must be recovered (put back on your system).
My understanding is that the files will find their way back to the proper locations.
After you recovery the files that you backed up using the Recovery Manager, you may have to install some filework, programs, or data from your regular daily backups.  Whether or not this is necessary depends on how much of your user and program environment you managed to capture when you made the Recovery Manager backup.
You might have more trouble with the Firefox bookmarks if you never bothered to back up your bookmarks.  I always keep a separate "backup" and also an html Export of my Firefox bookmarks in case they are needed later.  On the other hand, if you backed up your entire user account, the settings may fall back into place when you do the file recovery mentioned above.
    For future reference:
Firefox > right-click in the clear area near the center-top of the browser >
    CHECK the menu box >
Click on Bookmarks > Show all bookmarks > Click on "Import and Backup" >
Click on "Backup" >> select a location for the file and complete the backup
Next, Click on "Export" >> select a location, somewhere in your user account is fine >>
If you like, edit the name to include the date and maybe the name of the computer along with the date >>
    Complete the export
Later, if ever needed, you can reverse the process and use Import to load the bookmarks back into FireFox (or any browser that can read the bookmarks.html file).  Be careful about importing the file more than once - depending on your browser version, you might end up with duplicates.
One more hint:  If your bookmarks tool bar lacks the entries after you Import the bookmarks file, open "All Bookmarks" > scroll down the list and look for "old Toolbar" or some such thing.  Open that folder, highlight and copy the files in that folder up to the top of the list of book marks into the "new" (but empty) Bookmarks Toolbar.  Poof!  Your Toolbar bookmarks will show up.
There are no doubt Mozilla help files on this subject that make more sense than these hastily scratched notes.  Smiling.

  • I am trying to reinstall Windows on my macbook pro.  I downloaded the support files and Windows 7 iso file to a USB drive.  However, when I try to run the setup.exe program I get the message "this program cannot be run in DOS mode."

I am trying to reinstall Windows (would not launch).  I removed the partition and started over.  I downloaded the support files and Windows 7 iso file to a USB drive.  However, when I try to run the setup.exe program I get the message "this program cannot be run in DOS mode."  I was successful before, what am I doing wrong this time?

    Try a restart.
If that doesn't fix the problem, shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Can't open PSD file after reinstall windows 7 64 bit

After reinstalling windows 7 stopped opening some files PSD files. I try to open them with Photoshop version 6, it does not work. I tried to open them on the laptop, same garbage. Tell me what the problem is. And how to fix it.
    Thank you.

Perhaps these files were corrupted. I can not say how it happened, but it is quite possible. And the files are no longer open, immediately after reinstalling windows? Or not?
If so, it is quite rare in my opinion. You are very unlucky. Try reinstalling photoshop. Then check these files were opened or not. If not. Then the only option is a special software. I would use on your site this program
    http://www.photoshop.recoverytoolbox.com/
(it is not free but is very good and is not expensive. But in the future you will immune from such situations. )
As well you can learn more about your problem here:

  • After I connected my hard disk to a friend's windows system all my files have been converted to .ink files and do not open....what do i do? They had important content

after connecting my hard disk to a windows laptop all my files have somehow converted to .ink files and are not accessible.....what do i do?

What do you mean by "all files", surely only one category of files got their default open program changed.
Choose the affected files, right click on an individual file, and "open with",...change to default program.
For a group, right click > show info > open with > change ALL
If more than one group of files has had its default opening program changed, a time machine roll-back would be the easy option. Do you have a TM backup?

  • I received a psd file created in CS6 for MAC, I am unable to find the layers when I open it in photoshop in Windows. What can i do to edit the files?

I received a psd file created in CS6 for MAC, I am unable to find the layers when I open it in photoshop in Windows. What can i do to edit the files? What can be done so that I can either open and see the layers or how can the sender save it in a way that it doesn't "merge" the layers in some way to just one?

Could try saving as tiff provided layers and transparency are chosen at the time of saving. But it's hard to give a definitive answer as it depends on the final usage. For example PSD's tend to work better in applications like In Design in comparison with tiff.

  • Can't access my apple lossless files on external hard drive after reinstalling windows 8.1

    Hi guys
New to this. I reinstalled windows 8.1 after windows continually asking me to change my password after not recognising it despite it being the right one. All my apple lossless tunes are on my external hard drive. Windows keeps saying 'I don't have access to this file currently'. I tried right clicking on hard drive, clicked properties, and tried assigning administrator rights to everyone but still no luck. Contacted windows who said it was an apple issue so here I am.
Can anyone help. I've got 900 albums on this hard drive and the thought of ripping them all again is stressing me.
    Thanks guys
    Stuart

Changing the path to the media folder doesn't change which database iTunes opens. If your original database is on the external drive then shift-start-iTunes and use the choose option to open it. If you no longer have access to the original database shift-start-iTunes and create a new empty library at X:\iTunes, where X: is the external drive letter, ensure the media folder is set to X:\iTunes\iTunes Media, move all of your content inside X:\iTunes\iTunes Media, use File > Add Folder to Library > X:\iTunes\iTunes Media. See also Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. There are some scripts near the end that can extract ratings, play counts and playlists from your device and the rest of the tip explains how you backup and restore the device with the new library to avoid losing data.

  • How come when i open my itunes it says "itunes cannot open because some of it's required files are missing. Please reinstall itunes." What do i do?

last night i wanted to update my ipad to 4.3 and when i tried to; it told me i had to download the new itunes too. so i tried downloading the new updated version on itunes, and this morning when i tried to open my itunes it said "itumes cannot open because some of it's required files are missing. Please reinstall itunes." what do i do?

With that one, I think we should try getting the malware possibilities off the table first.
Try downloading and installing the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Update your MBAM definitions and then run a full scan of the PC. (Takes about 2 hour on my Lenovo.)
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Does the scan find any infections? If so, please paste the contents of the log file for the scan in a reply here so we can have a look.
