Reinstallation of iCal .

Hi,
I have been more than one month didn't turn on my iMac because I'm in the business trip,
then, when I turn on again, my iCal going to completely blank, all the calendars, events, to do lists, notes and reminders were disappeared, even the iCal Preferences and all the function on the "File", "Edit" and "View" menu were not responded, also can't quit normally, got to be force quit. The only things that able to do is all my previous events and notes can sync to my iPhone through iTunes, in fact which is not able to launch iCal on my iMac. Does anyone can figure out that ??
This message I have been posted on a week ago, however, it seem to be nobody can help.
But here I got an idea, can I delete my existing iCal and then reinstall via my Installation Disc.
So does anyone know about that, anythings should I pay attention during the reinstallation ??

BenNovello,
Before you attempt to reinstall, try these steps:
1. Often iCal problems can be rectified by refreshing the iCal plist file. Navigate to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder, and find the com.apple.iCal.plist file. Drag that file to your desktop, log out/in or restart and let us know what happens when you attempt to open iCal.
2. Quit iCal and navigate to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder, and find the "Calendar Cache" file. Drag that file to your trash and restart iCal.
The Calendar Cache file will be rebuilt and hopefully iCal will once again function properly.
3. Additionally, since you appear to be having problems related to Date/Time open System Preferences...>International>Formats and experiment with changing Region/Dates/Times.
If these steps are unsuccessful reinstall iCal by using these steps:
1. Insert your Leopard Installation disk into the computer.
2. The disk will appear on your desktop.
3. Double click on the "Optional Installs" folder.
4. Double click on the "Optional Installs.mpkg."
5. Click on (Continue) in Introduction.
6. Click on (Continue) in Software License Agreement.
7. Click on (Agree) to agree to the terms of the software license agreement.
8. Click on the disclosure arrow ▶ next to Applications.
9. Select (✓) iCal.
10. Click (Continue).
11. After iCal has been reinstalled, download and install the OS X 10.5.5 Combo Update to bring iCal, and your system up to the most recent version of OS X.
Good Luck.

  • ICal 3.0.7 not working

Having done the update to OS 10.5.7 I discovered the same issue I had in a previous update (perhaps to 10.5.6? Can't recall exactly), that being that iCal does nothing. That is to say, it starts up but never loads any calendars. Upon trying to Quit iCal, it never quits. It does not 'hang' (Bringing up the Force Quit window does not show any 'not responding', nor does Activity Monitor give any clue that anything is wrong.), it simply just never quits.
To try and get my calendars back I first tried a 'Reset' from MobileMe, then a Restore from Time Machine. In both cases, nothing. On restarting iCal, no calendars.
I then removed the iCal plist file, which also did nothing.
Having been down this path before, and having spent considerable time mucking about last time it occurred, I did not try anything else but instead went straight to:
The solution, as it was last time this occurred, was to use Time Machine to Restore iCal vers. 3.0.2, which continues to work perfectly.
Any one else seen this behavior or have any ideas?
**Note in my specs I state 'Other OS', that is only because the Discussions page does not yet recognize 10.5.7**

    William,
No, iCal is dead across the board for all users.
That indicates a system reinstallation of some type will be the only way to correct your problem.
As to the problem 'having been introduced by the Time Machine retrograde...', au contraire. It is only by using Time Machine that I've been able to get iCal working, albeit not with the current version.
Perhaps I could have used better semantics than "introduced by the Time Machine retrograde," but the fact remains that if you are using an older version of iCal your system is not properly updated. Although I may not able to reconstruct the versions, or all of the improvements that iCal has gone through since 3.0.2, this short summary describes iCal changes described by Apple in these Updates:
    OS X 10.5.7 iCal
    ▪ Improves overall reliability with CalDav.
    ▪ Improves reliability when automatically syncing with MobileMe.
    OS X 10.5.5 iCal
    ▪ Updates iCal to more accurately handle repeating events.
    ▪ Improves performance when choosing meeting attendees.
    ▪ Resolves an issue in which the "Refresh All" option may be dimmed ("grayed out") in the contextual menu for certain calendars.
    ▪ Fixes issues with read-only calendars.
    ▪ Addresses an issue that prevents an invitee from moving an event to a different calendar.
    ▪ Resolves an issue with syncing published calendars.
The choice to remain with 3.0.2, or attempt further Updates remains yours.

  • ICal won't even start-up

Not sure what caused this to happen, but when I click the iCal app icon it will not start. The toolbar is populated with the iCal menus, but the application does not appear. When I go into the applications folder via my HD disk navigator the iCal icon is not the regular calendar image, but rather looks like an "un-assigned" file type or something.
I tried to re-install the iCal app using the original install CD, but no luck....Thoughts?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I tried to re-install the iCal app using the original install CD, but no luck....Thoughts?
Whenever you reinstall an OS X application, you should also follow up with a reinstallation of the appropriate Combo Update to ensure that your new application is updated to the most current version. In your case you should also reinstall the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update.
    After reinstalling the Combo Update:
    1. Remove the iCal icon from the Dock.
    2. Replace the iCal Dock icon with the iCal icon located in your applications folder.
    3. Then before attempting to start iCal, try refreshing the iCal plist file, and the "Calendar Cache" file. You will find the "com.apple.iCal.plist" file in your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. Drag the com.apple.iCal.plist file to your Desktop. Also find the "Calendar Cache" file in the Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder. Drag the Calendar Cache file, or any other "Cache" files which may be in the Calendars Folder to the Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and check iCal for normal behavior.

  • Tiger upgrade- wife cant open ical

Hi- I recently updated to tiger from panther, then updated to 10.4.2. Have been consist in running disk permissions. I have seperate user accounts for my wife and I (I'm the admin). Since updating to tiger, Ical bounce onces when she clicks on it and that's it- no flippy triangle. I checked get info from my side and it says
    Owner/system- read & write
    group/admin- read & write
    others read only
Does my wife fall into the others group? I tried to change others to her login but it only reverts back to "others". I've deleted plists, reopened, but nothing.
    Any ideas? Thanks!!!
    Mike

My standard contrary position/experience: I have never reformatted a drive when doing Macintosh operating system upgrades. Not once.
I'd suggest you run every piece of diagnostic and repair software you have at your disposal and maybe check with the Tiger forum before you commit to a scorched earth reformat and reinstallation of everything. Incredible pain in the patootie.
BACK UP EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE. That means use a cloning application like CarbonCopyCloner (versiontracker.com) and NOT a simple backup app.

  • 10.4.6 Update: Down to just iCal being broken

My own update has been a big headache. I'm fortunate enough to have important files backed up externally and use Backup. The last program I need but can't fix after this painful update is iCal. It crashes as soon as the calendar window opens (pretty much instantly). At this point I don't want to do a system reinstallation because my OS X install disk is 10.4, I don't have the time or inclination to start from scratch and work through the combo updates to get back up to date. Is it possible for me to locate and install an updated version of iCal without the need to reinstall the entire OS? Does Apple keep installers for individual applications tucked away somewhere they don't advertise?
    Thanks!

  • Out of the blue flickering and iCal won't quit

We bought our iMac 20" last January 2008 and it has worked perfectly. I have installed all updates. After the last update (and I really don't know if it is just coincidence...) iCal won't quit unless it is forced. All data is gone. It might also have something to do with the last time I synced my iPod...?
More troubling, the screen has started flickering... almost shutting down at points. However, it is not on a regular basis and seemingly out of the blue...?
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Wilrez,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Regarding the iCal issue, if you used Software Update for installing OS X 10.5.7, you may want to try reinstalling the update using the Mac OS X 10.5.7 Combo Update.
Let us know what happens with both problems after the reinstallation.

  • Can't reinstall iCal

I'm in the middle of a lot of iCal syncing drama, and I thought the 10.5.3 was going to be the miracle fix to a problem that's been going on for months. I could actually see my calendars once I installed 10.5.3, but they weren't synching properly. So, I deleted all iCal-related files, and following the advice of someone earlier, I deleted the iCal application itself. Now, I can't reinstall it from the system disk!
When I try, iCal is greyed out. (In other words, I see it as a choice, but I can't click on it.) Here's what I'm doing:
    Inserting Install Disk 1
Open the Optional Installs folder, then the .mpkg installer itself
Click through the permissions until I get to the Custom Install menu
Click the triangle besides Applications to reveal the choices there.
Here's where it's weird to me. I can click every choice there EXCEPT for iCal. Address Book, Safari, iTunes, and all of the others I can click on. But, iCal is visible there as choice, but it's not active. I can't select it and continue the reinstallation.
    Am I missing something obvious?

    Lee,
Click through the permissions until I get to the Custom Install menu
You should not see permissions choices if you are trying to reinstall iCal using an Admin account.
Since you specifically mentioned "Click through the permissions," I suspect that may be trying to reinstall ICal using a Standard account.
These are the install windows that you should see:
Welcome to the Optional Installs Installer-Continue
    Software License Agreement-Continue
Custom Installs on "Macintosh HD" This is where you should be able to select iCal
+Administrator: An administrator account user can create, delete, and modify accounts, install software, and change system settings. Since administrators have such broad access, you should limit the number of administrator accounts created.+
+Standard: Standard account users cannot administer other accounts, but can install software for their own use and change settings related to their accounts.+
So, I deleted all iCal-related files.
    Do you have any backups?
following the advice of someone earlier, I deleted the iCal application itself.
FWIW, I do not consider that good advice. I would rather use an Archive and Install.

  • ICal won't save any new events

    Hello,
iCal worked fine for a time, but now I can enter as much events as I want, it forgets everyone once I shut down iCal. If I just close the window (so that the light still glows under the symbol in the dock) the program remembers the newly entered events.
I'm not sure, but I upgraded 10.5. to 10.6.2. snow leopard on my MacBook a few days ago - so maybe the events won't be saved since I installed 10.6. and the problem is connected with 10.6.
Events I entered in the past, are being remembered finely. And I have full write and read rights in the specific events-folder.
I found this problem often on google, but no one seems to have a solution but to deactivate the birthday-abonnement, which I don't want to. I didn't find this problem in this forum - if it exists, please just delete this thread and show me the other one.
    Thank You for answering,
    schut

    schut,
...when I export as .ics-file I get all my events back by importing and when I use .icbu-files I don't.
That is the reason that I urged you to export individual calendars. That procedure will usually work for the .ics files if the .icbu is unsuccessful.
...One is called "Calendar sync Changes" (although I don't sync my calendar with anything?). Of course I deleted everything, but I wanted to report this either.
I do not know why it reappears, but surmise that attempting to subscribe to birthdays may create the folder.
...When I log in again and start iCal it has the event-groups "test", "Privat" and "Buero" (=office or something like that in English). Is this normal although I deleted all the stuff You said?
Those two calendars (Work/Home)will automatically be created the first time iCal opens without any data. You can delete them without consequence.
...By the way, is there no way/program with that I can uninstall iCal (and maybe reinstall)?
I have found that individual application reinstallation rarely, if ever solves the type of problems which you are experiencing.
...Or is there maybe a known problem in the address-book program from which is not known that it can conflict with the iCal also?
I am not aware of a "known problem," but do agree that there may be a corrupt address card.
I would agree with your plan, as long as you are willing to manually recreate your Address Book entries.
    Good Luck!

  • ICal keeps opening up to last week!! How do I fix this?

My iCal continues to open to last weeks events. I have tried everything I can think of to make it open to todays date/this week:
    1. Deleted all of last weeks events in case there was an event that week that messed up something.
    2. Backed up and restored iCal.
    3. Deleted the prefs.
    4. Reset Sync History.
Obviously, none of these things worked!
Any suggestions/help would be greatly appreciated!

    Kaylasmom,
For example, in the mini-calendar for today, the 22nd and 15th are highlighted.
The mini calendar display retains the last viewed days, and the only thing that you can do is to click on the current day.
...For iCal, I'm using MobileMe. I use ChronoSync for other files, but neither iCal or Address Book are involved in the ChronoSync workflow.
In my opinion, that fact is not necessarily a reason to exclude ChronoSync from your problem.
Since you are using MobileMe, I recommend that you try Apple - Support - MobileMe>MobileMe Calendar>Other iCal questions>"Chat Now."
...I created a test account, and iCal works perfectly in that account.
Well at least we know that it account specific and a system reinstallation would not be helpful.
...I will try the combo update again when I get a chance later.
    Let us know what happens.

  • HELP - REALLY URGENT : iCal sending loop mails for an alarm, and more

    Hi.
My iCal is not working since 2 months now. Even I post here something, I had no replies. iCal is REALLY slow since 2 months, needing 20 seconds to pass a field (as to go from 20 to 00 field in a 20:00 meeting).
I reinstalled totally my Mac OS for that and it did not change anything. It's linked to SyncServer.
Worst, now I have an alarm that was set last year, to send an email. Everytime I start my laptop, iCal loop this alarm and sent 500 mails, I have to force to quit SyncServer. And if I go to iCal to remove the alarm, iCal crash !
I can't loose all my datas... please do help me !

I made that, but as my OS X reinstallation, did not solve anything
and even .mac sync does not work anymore now pff i'm getting tired of Apple in this kind of situation, nobody cares

  • Accidently Deleted iCal and want it back!

Last night I accidently deleted iCal (I'm still somewhat new to macs). I'd really like to get it back and have searched everywhere on the internet to get it back. The version available to download off of the apple website is not compatible with my version of OS X (10.4.11). I read the manual and tried downloading the bundled software of the disk. Unfortunately it didn't work. I was hoping that someone could help me get it back without having to reinstall OS X completely. If any one has any advice, I would appreciate it greatly.

    Leeners,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I read the manual and tried downloading the bundled software of the disk. Unfortunately it didn't work.
Did you try the installation options outlined in Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4?
Be sure that you follow the procedures listed in...More custom reinstallation options with Mac OS X 10.4
After you reinstall iCal, you should use the OS X Combo Update to bring iCal up to the most recent version.

  • My iCal disappeared

I installed today the 10.4.5 Intel and after the installation the iCal application is not available anymore. I tried to re-install it fro the Library but did not work. Does anyone know anything about it?
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Dina,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
There is no option to reinstall from the library. If you attempted to use the iCal.pkg for reinstallation, it is only a reciept which is in essence only evidence that iCal was once installed.
Where was the iCal application located before you installed the Update?
Did you ever move iCal from the Applications folder default location? If it was moved previous to the 10.4.5 Update, it did not get properly updated. If this was the case you can move it back to the application folder and reapply the 10.4.5 Combo Update.
The software restore disks which came with your computer should also contain the original iCal application. The Tiger installation does have a custom install feature which you should be able to use, but you will still need to reapply the Combo Update.

  • HT1338 How to reinstall iCal from Mac OS X disc?

I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8.  iCal has become corrupted.  I have run Optional Installs.mpkg  from the Mac OS X disc.  This is supposed to allow re-installation of selected bundled applications but iCal and all the other applications (Mail, Address Book, iTunes etc) are "greyed" out and can't be selected for reinstallation.   Does anyone know why this might be or what to do about it?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion. I unpacked iCal from the CD using Pacifist. However the iCal application still does not work. I get an error message saying the iCal version 3.0.8 does not run with the current version of the operating system (OS X 10.6.8).  I have also tried reinstalling a copy of iCal (version 4.0.4) from a Timemachine backup made a month or so ago - but same problem it won't run and the error message says its the wrong version for my operating system.  Worse still iMail has stopped working as well and offers up a similar error message (iMail version doesn't work with this version of the OS).  This is baffling because the entire operating system and bundled applications were re-installed in January this year by a Mac dealer when the hard drive was replaced.  The Timemachine backup was done in May when everything worked so it is hard to understand why restoring the same version of iCal does not work now.
Seems Macs are great when they work but impenetrable for the average user when things get out of sync.

  • Year-at-a-glance View in iCal

Once again, I am filling out next year's year-at-a-glance wall calendar and wish I had this view in iCal. With today's screens, a year-at-a-glance view shouldn't be difficult to implement and would be very useful. My favorite layout has 12 rows (one for each month, January at the top) and blocks for each day running from left to right with weekends shaded. When is Apple going to improve iCal? or at least enable others to make such improvements?
Message was edited by: Jim Putnam

I can't believe this, I finally get round to organizing myself and ical doesn't do a year view.
I have hunted online for some way to make this happen and have ended up making a pdf of a printout to be able to see it.
This can only be a temp solution, as my diary changes a lot and printing/pdf is not very elegant or efficient or even that easy to read quickly.
In my online search I have found posts requesting this as far back as 2003, and 6 years is to long to wait for something that surely must be such a simple solution.
I'm also stunned by the lack of plugin/widget/app solutions from 3rd party developers, I would definitely pay a a buck or 2 for something to let me do this well within ical,
And If I want it you can be sure there are at least another 100,000 who would also pay, maybe we could get the guy who wrote the ifart app for iphone to write it for us, about 2000 people a day were buying that at 99 cents a pop in the run up to christmas.
    Apple should embarrassed by this.
If anyone knows the solution please post it.
