Reinstallation questions after boot drive replacement
I joined CC last year. At the time I had Lightroom 5 installed and upgraded via various upgrade discs as well as CS5 which I arrived at via various upgrade discs. When I joined the CC it downloaded the latest versions of both Lightroom and CS.
So now I will be starting over with a new boot drive and fresh reinstalled windows 7 ultimate installation. My lightroom catalog was on another hard drive so it was unaffected. My questions are as follows: Do I need to reinstall Lightroom and CS from my various discs? Or can I simply access CC from the link in my join up email and will it download the latest versions of those programs without me having any previous versions on the hard drive. My final question is once I do have Lightroom downloaded again will it seek out and find my Lightroom catalog on the other hard drive? Or do I manually have to link Lightroom to the catalog and then it will work as it did before? Thanks for any help.
This is mainly a user-to-user forum. And many, many Creative Cloud users never use Lightroom so they're unfamiliar with how it works. That's why you should post product questions in the appropriate product user forums.
once I do have Lightroom downloaded again will it seek out and find my Lightroom catalog on the other hard drive?
Not likely.

After boot drive replacement questions
My boot drive, on which the Lightroom 5 software was located, failed and I just got the boot drive replaced and downloaded Lightroom 5. Fortunately my Lightroom 5 Catalog Previews, Catalog Preview.Irdata and all important Lightroom Library were located on a separate drive that was not impacted by the boot drive failure. How do I go about linking those files to the Lightroom 5 I just reinstalled?
Apparently the computer repair place saw fit to rename the drives that were not impacted in any way by the boot disk failure. So when I double clicked the catalog I ended up with all questions marks under folders in Lightroom. I have googled looking at "find missing folders" and "synchronize" and found nothing that makes obvious sense to me. When I tried the missing folders option I get a message that "the selected folder or one of its subfolders is already in Lightroom. Do you want to combine these folders" And then gives me the option to merge or cancel. I have chosen cance as this doesn't sound right. Any more help would be appreciated.

Satellite L50D - Boot issues after Hard Drive replacement
I have just upgraded my hard drive from the pathetic 5400 crod they supply to an SSHD@7200rpm but now have a major issue.
I initially imaged the os from the old hard drive back to the new drive and have had chronic boot issues (1 in 3-4 boot attempts succeed else it fails at any point (often at the Toshiba startup screen)).
I've reinstalled from a plain clean Win 8.1 ENT disc (trying to avoid the bloatware) and this has the exact same issue and was what I used to format the laptop fine with previously and worked previously.
I've tried reformatting and reinstalling (deleting ALL partitions each attempt) in CSM, UEFI non secure and UEFI secure. CSM is a straight never works no go and both UEFI methods have the exact same outcome.
I've tried with the original restore discs and it seems to work (haven't had time to fully test) but I don't want the bloatware and this should not matter since if I were a customer who forgot to make the restore discs (happens too often) and just had to have a failed or killed hard drive replaced the laptop would now be a door stop.
This seems as bad as Apple for locking people in :/.
So I'd appreciate ideas from people please, I'm not sure if there is a prep program that is supposed to be run over a new drive like PS3's etc (I doubt it) but this is driving me up the wall and will be the last time I consider Toshiba as anything other than a joke if there is no fix.
I've had to replace hard drives a few times in my previous Toshiba laptops and had none of this crod, it has something to do with the UEFI which seems more of a nuisance than assistance at the moment.
TIA.Hi
In my opinion you should check firstly if this booting issue is related to the new installed HDD or new installed system.
You said that the notebook fails to boot often at the Toshiba splash screen.
The splash screen appears while POST (power on self test) procedure. During this test, the hardware will be checked.
Im wondering if the hybrid SSD/HDD isnt recognized by BIOS during this particular step.
From my point of few this might be the reason why the system cannot be booted up.
Another important note:
The Win 8.1 requires enable secure boot as well as the UEFI boot mode.
Therefore you should enable both options in BIOS.
Last but not least check if you are using latest BIOS version as well as latest firmware for hybrid SSD/HDD -

Full Specs are in subsequent post.
The issues described in the title continue even after I’ve reinstalled the operating system twice (Snow Leopard) and installed Mavericks (which is working fine and even faster). I’ve tried many commands to repair this.
If anyone has experienced any of the symptoms above or below, your advice and response will be much appreciated as well as marked. These are the details:
My Early 2011 MacBook Pro has had the typical blue screens, screen freezes and graphics issues since I bought it about three years ago but nothing like this and NEVER any load issues until about a month ago. That was when my superdrive replacement was put in.
Since then my MacBook Pro will go into hard freezes or kernel panics. Then I’ll have to power it down manually and power it up manually. It’ll then refuse to load the OS until after multiple tries. It started out just 2 or 3, then 4 or 5, then 6-12, then 20. Now it takes over 30 boots to load the OS. These boot issues also occur even if it doesn’t freeze, i.e.: when I shut it down or restart it naturally (via the Apple menu, etc.).
95% of the time it’ll load to a gray screen instead of the OS. 4% of the time it’ll load to a light blue screen. Then there are the others: the first time this happened it loaded to the striped purple and teal screen shown in the picture. This happened the next four times then intermittently for about 5 or so more times.
It also loaded gray flickering screens. Flickering screens also occurred right before it froze and had to be manually powered down and up. Then it began to load regular gray and light blue screens and all flickering screens stopped. And then bright blue screens a couple times intermittently for a few days, sometimes with lines. Sometimes it’ll load to a blank/black screen as well. I’d reset the NVRAM and SMC but it still continued, happening multiple times a day, each time taking more and more hard shut downs and hard power ons to finally load the OS.
Until I installed Mavericks, every time it finally loaded the OS Finder began indexing. After Mavericks this has occurred 95% of the time.
After talking to Apple Support they had me do a NVRAM and SMC reset again over the phone. The MacBook Pro refused to load the entire time we were on the phone. After the call it got worse. It froze over 6 times that day and at worse took over 30 boots to load the OS.
I finally had time to deal with it the next day when it froze again. After over 25 boots it loaded and I put in the Snow Leopard OS dvd and ran Disk Utility. I verified the hard drive and it said it was fine. Repaired the disk anyway and it gave this message at the end:
“Updating boot support partitions for volume required”.
Next I tried to start in safe mode and it just hung up for hours. Then started up in single mode and it loaded the OS. It then loaded normally for three times in a row. I reinstalled Snow Leopard. Everything loaded normally. I waited an hour or so and then I downloaded Mavericks. 5 or so hours later Mavericks was installed. Everything hardware wise was fine for a day and all software issues were easily fixable incompatibilities. My Mac was even faster with Mavericks. However, Photoshop did give a perhaps relevant message:
“Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer’s website for the latest software.
GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences.”
(I have OpenGL enabled in Photoshop and it was already checked when this error occurred).
Two days ago I went to Disk Utility to repair permissions while logged in to a non-admin account. Verified and repaired the disk, then verified permissions. Everything fine. After repairing permissions however, it gave a weird error box:
"Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
The box stayed “stuck” in the Disk Utility window. My MacBook Pro then failed to do anything. I manually powered it down and up. It loaded to a gray screen with the error message box again: "Unapproved caller, SecurityAgent may only be invoked by Apple software".
It then refused to load anything else but this message box on a gray screen even after rebooting it multiple times in safe, verbose and single modes and after resetting the NVRAM and SMC. I went online with an iPad and entered in the error and got some advice. I tried to run fsck and erase the /var/folders/ via single user mode but it still loaded to a gray screen with the error message. I just decided to skip to the end and Cmd-R loaded into recovery mode and reinstalled Mavericks again. That worked: the message has not appeared since.
Some people have said this error is related to a hard drive cable failure. I know that this cable was tampered with during the optical drive replacement procedures because I watched them do it.
Everything was fine for a day. Then yesterday my MacBook Pro froze while trying to open a VLC file. It took 12 boots to load the OS. I tried single mode once and verbose mode once. 10 times it loaded to gray screens, even in those mode. A Safe boot lead to a bright blue screen. Finally reset the SMC and it loaded on the 12th time.
Just five hours ago the same thing happened except it took over 30 boots to load the OS. Single, verbose and normal boots, NVRAM and SMC resets lead to gray screens. Safe boots lead to bright blue screens with and without lines (see pictures). Finally loaded on a normal boot.
I know I should have tried safe booting, verbose, single and recovery modes, disk utility, fsck and other command methods earlier this month but in the end, these methods have not solved the problem anymore than resetting the NVRAM or SMC.
There seems to be conclusive evidence that it’s a hardware problem, stemming from last month, the FIRST AND ONLY time my MacBook Pro was opened up. Maybe it’s the hard drive cable, but it could also be the graphics card and/or logic board (something that’s always been defective on this MacBook Pro, in my opinion). Many early 2011 MacBook Pro owners have given evidence to the latter possibility online.
The first time it started it seemed to stem from me using iPhoto and Photoshop a lot. I had both running continuously for about two weeks. This is another reason for suspecting the graphics card/logic board is at fault (in addition to three years of screen/graphics glitches). And since the card is soldered to the board and the board connected to the cable...I also have serious battery draining issues, something else that got bad after the Apple Superdrive repair. And the battery is connected to the board...
Also, since downloading Mavericks, windows from every app get blurry/fuzzy when I scroll or zoom in. I have read that this is happening to a lot of folks though for various reasons.
I guess it could always be the hard drive. I just don’t know. I’m taking it in to Apple, but can't right away because it’s not local. I know they’ll be able to run a test on the hard drive. I wanted to see if anyone else has had this problem (especially the purple and teal striped screen) before they start poking around, possibly creating another problem that goes beyond my Apple Care Plan allotment.SPECS OF MY MACBOOK PRO:

MacBook Pro won't reboot. Get spinning circle even after hard drive replaced at Apple Store
MacBook Pro won't reboot. Have to reinstall OSX each time I shut down in order to get it to start up. What could be wrong? I had the hard drive replaced already.
You shouldn't be using the disc at all. I thought I had made that clear. Boot from your recovery partition and run Disc Utility. If you get the same result -- the internal drive can't be repaired -- then you should consider replacing it. No storage device can be trusted, in my opinion, after throwing an error like that. But whether you choose to replace it or erase it, you have to get the data out first.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
1. Boot from your recovery partition (10.7 or later), a local Time Machine backup volume (10.7.2 or later), or your installation disc (10.6.8 or earlier.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
2. If you have a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data. -
My macbook pro is now unworkably slow after hard drive replacement
installed a new harddrive wdc blue 320 5400, verified in DU, . I reinstalled 10.5,
can't see time machine. and now it is so slow that it rainbow spins for 30 seconds after each click on any window, folder, button, anything.
I've updated,activity monitored, mackeepered.
my last ditch is migration assistant (now on 30th hours).
to see if a retored orignal system and prefs will see the Time Machine backup, and get back from there.
it will work fine if booted to a usb drive with same system.
if I didn't know better, Disk Utility is lying to me and this is a bad hard drive or somehow incompatible with the dual core intels.
is applejack worth trying, onyx?
I may just hit it with a banana
thanks to anyone with the know how about this.thank you Neville that was alot of help.
I am faced with believing the few discussions concerning slow replacement drives, that claim, that the new WD drives have firmware issues with the os x 10.5 2009 macbook pro's as well as any drive with a speed greater that 5400. all my utilies onyx & DU, say my drive is functioning.
however every operation that involves the new drive (whether it was the boot drive or not) takes 30 -60 times the speed I am used to.
I am now going to search for a confirmed compatible replacement drive.
p.s.
thanks for upgrading my thinking on drive set ups, that will hold me in good stead for years, and I appreciate that very much -

Fresh Install after boot drive crashed... advice needed plaese
So wake up today turn on my tower and all I get is a grey screen and a clicking boot drive. Sounds like the other three drives are mounting fine. Or my tower is need of some Snow.
So I know enough to say bye bye boot drive.... my question is-
I now have purchased Snow Leopard and will start fresh. Should I take out the remaining three drives while I handle a clean install. Any advice to make this process a bit more painless? I back up all drives expect my boot UGH... I am going to start using time machine.... learned a lesson. There's no way to know how long a delay will be while waiting for a 'time-out'. It depends on how well or how poorly the OS is able to communicate with the drive, and how bad the controller chips on the drive are. You can view the problem as a Quality of Service issue. Your Mac is trying to communicate with the drive, determine it's size/type/format/timing etc, while also verifying the quality of the data. CRC error checking takes place along with a host of quality control measures implemented with each new version of Mac OS. Leopard made some drives fail due to poorly designed firmwares on the controller chips. SL got even pickier.
During this process, that's failing, the problem could be any part of the driver verification system.
On the other hand, if the drive quits spinning or the controller chips don't answer back at all, the 'time-out' will probably end sooner.
It's luck of the draw when you try to determine the exact cause of a drive failure - controller chips, drive motor, head crash platter damage, r/w head... I just call it 'bad' and throw the drives into a bin where they will get speared with a digging bar before going to recycle -
License question: Changing boot drives.
I want to replace my boot drive with one imaged from the old drive.
Do I need to somehow deactivate the license on the old drive before I change? (A few years back I ran out of activations on Acrobat because I kept 'testing' my backup drives to see if they worked. Mistake on my part.)Since software was distributed on 5 1/4" discs, software developers exploited dozens of tricky ways to identify media to prevent unauthorized copying. Usually without explaining to customers what might invalidate their software. In my case with Acrobat, I could find nothing in my user manuals, help nor advertising material that explained that running a disc restore on a new drive would use up an authorization. But it did. Without telling me. And I had to stop using Acrobat until I bought a new copy.
I have never seen any drive image software that promised a physically/electrically identical copy that could guarantee no authorization problems. Are there some? I pay for my software - but I have abandoned tools that are too hard to keep authenticated. Less common in the last 5 years and there really isn't a decent single source of so many fine tools as Adobe. And hard drives fail so much less often than they did in the 90's.
I was just hoping someone at Adobe could help me carry out a reasonable step that a customer might want to take. Thanks to Jose above for a good suggestion. -

Spotlight not indexing after hard drive replaced
Hi all
Just wondering if anyone knows how to encourage Spotlight to re-index? Just had my hard drive replaced as part of the recall, and now Spotlight wont index anything.
I've tried previous suggestions (adding and removing hard drive to privacy list, commands through terminal etc), but it's still not working. All the software is up to date (10.7.5).
Any ideas? It's incredibly annoying, and making working on this computer virtually impossible at the moment.
CheersIf you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "mdworker" (without the quotes) in the Filter text field. Post the most recent 50 or so messages that appear in the Console window — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.
Step 2
Do the same with the search string "mds". -
Can't sync new songs to iPod after hard drive replacement.
A few months ago, I had my hard drive replaced on my Windows Vista laptop. So I backed up all my files including iTunes to an external drive. When the new hard drive was installed I restored the iTunes library back. Yesterday was the first time since the restore that I purchased new music from the iTunes store. I bought 6 new songs. I can see the new songs in the iTunes library but when I sync the iPod the new songs do not transfer over to the iPod. Any ideas on how I can fix this problem? Thanks.
I found the link below and it worked. I added the songs manually.

Time Machine backups extremely slow after hard drive replacement
I'm having trouble with Time Machine backups following a hard drive replacement. The Apple Store replaced my MacBook Pro's damaged hard drive three days ago and I successfully restored my system (OSX 10.6.8) using a Time Machine backup. The computer is running fine now, but ever since the repair my Time Machine back-ups take a very long time (>2 hours per backup, versus 30-60 seconds before the repair). I know that the intiial backup of a new computer can take a while but I'm now onto complete backup #10 since the repair and they are not getting quicker. I'm not adding/changing many files or software in between backups. The backups appear to be successful but the external hard drive and computer fan are running nearly constantly, which is concerning (and annoying). Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks.
Peruse Pondini's TM FAQs, for information.

Time Machine Problem after Hard drive replacement
Hi all,
I am new at this so thanks in advance for any help or direction. I am running Mac OS X version 10.6.8 on an iMac and am having troubles with my Time Machine since having my 1 TB hard drive replaced under the Seagate recall. Specifically, the store somehow cloned my drive during the replacement process but now when Time Machine runs it doesn't recognize its prior backups as belonging to itself, starts to perform a full backup and then realizes it runs out of room as shown above.
I am backing up wirelessly to a 2012 dlink network attached storage device and it was working perfectly before having the hard drive replaced. The first time took ages but since was working fine. I have spent 3+ hours on the phone with apple support to no avail (trying to associate the old backups with TM and then just trying to delete them to start over..,) and have since been working through the Pondini pages of troubleshooting TM solutions.
Specifically, I have followed the instructions on http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html going through the green box steps 1-5 successfully first, but then I am unable to complete the process to inherit or associate the old backups (either pink or blue box) due to this error.
If I cannot associate the old backups with this 'new HD computer' then I think that I need to erase all prior backups so that I have room on the NAS to start TM backup from scratch. However, this is problematic as I cannot 'see' the old backups to try to delete them through Time Machine itself as the computer does not see itself as existing on the timeline prior to the HD replacement date. I therefore need a way of deleting the whole thing but clearly not through Finder or Terminal from problems mentioned by doing this in prior posts.
My NAS is partitioned so that all the Time Machine Backups were supposed to be just in one part of the NAS, separate from the stuff we were archiving from several other computers....(I cannot just reformat the entire NAS). From reading many of the Pondini troubleshooting posts I think that I need to do something to delete the whole sparsebundle? and think I have located it (see image below) (although I am not sure if it is the one from my prior successful backups prior to Nov 18 or from the more recent failed attempts).
I am carefully reading http://pondini.org/TM/12.html about deleting but at this point am a bit confused as to the best course of action.
Ideally, I would love to successfully tell TM that it has already backed itself up and that the Backups.backups folder belongs to it and not some other computer, so it can just proceed with updates.
Failing that, I think that I would try to delete all prior backups to free up the entire 1.87 TB that are designated and apple formatted for TM on the NAS and then restart TM from scratch.
Not sure if the Backups.backups folder that I have identified has all the info from before November 18th and then could be used to restore itself as I cannot see it through TM.
Thanks for the advice in advance. I would be grateful for any assistance and I am sure others having their hard drives replaced would also benefit.Hi all,
I am a bit disappointed that nobody has offered me any help! Please? Pondini?

Longer boot up with no chime after hard drive replacement.
I recently had my late 2009 27" iMac repaired by Apple because of a hard drive failure. But i noticed that it now takes a little bit longer to boot up and there isn't the usual chime when it starts up, the difference in time is only maybe 20 seconds longer than it used to be, it's not a major problem really but i'd just like to make sure it's running ok.
Once up and running it works fine, nothing different with the performance at all.
When it was fixed it did need to have the rear housing replaced, i'm not sure why though. And the power cable now doesn't push all the way in, which doesn't seem to cause any power problems.
I also ran the AHT and that said there wasn't any problems.
Is there anything i should be worrying about? Because as i said, it's fine once it's up and running.
Thanks in advance.I would call back (or go to the AASP if that was where the repairs were done) and list every one of the issues and politely but firmly ask that it be taken care of.
I wouldn't worry about the bootup time and it's great that it seems to be running well, but...... having no startup chime would be disturbing to me: it is the "notice" of the Mac to let you know that it passed it startup tests; i.e. if you have faulty RAM, there will be a series of beeps instead and there are other beeps/sounds for other causes.
And, I would want the power plug to fit snugly - that could mean that it isn't installed correctly and the bad fit could present problems as well.
