Reinstalled as New User?

I don't know if actually have a problem or if I'm just confused. I've been running Leopard for a few weeks, and I believe my user name was my name, all lower case and without spaces I believe (e.g. myname, not My Name). So, for example, my websites were stored in users/myname/Sites.
After reinstalling Leopard, I now have two points of confusion. First, if I click the Apple icon in the top left corner of my screen, at the bottom it says "Log Out MY NAME." I'm not certain if it used to be "Log Out my name" (lower case) or not. The important thing is DOES IT MATTER?
Also, when I click on Macintosh HD > Users, I see just two icons - a folder named Shared and an icon (looks like a house) named "webmaster." I don't recall if I originally had an icon named webmaster or not. When I reinstalled Leopard, I decided to try a free .Mac membership; perhaps the icon relates to that.
What confuses me is the absence of my older user name. I used to be able to follow this path:
Users/myname/Sites
Again, it may not matter. But I have tons of backed up files that I want to copy back to my Mac. Many of them were originally inside the folder Users > myname.
So I guess I have two or three questions. First, what's going on? Isn't Leopard supposed to automatically create a folder with my user/login name inside the Macintosh HD > Users folder?
Second, how can I create such a folder?
Third, if I give the folder its original name - myname - might that create conflicts with my current, upper case user name. I'm just speculating that some of the software programs, services, files, etc. that I copy back over might be somehow configured for "myname," rather than "MYNAME."
For example, I'm using MAMP Pro, in which I set up a series of virtual hosts mapped to Users/myname/Sites/MySite.
Like I say, I'm confused, and this might not be a problem at all. Thanks.

If I can throw in a second question...I cloned my hard drive a couple weeks ago. Accordingly, I can access my external hard drive with Finder, copy the entire folder Users/myname and paste it into the Users folder on my internal hard drive. Would that be a smart thing to do?
The reason I reinstalled Leopard in the first place is that it started acting up, booting into Setup Assistant, for example. I suspect the problem might be somehow related to a few software programs and/or Opera widgets I installed over the last couple days. That's why I'm installing most of my software from scratch.
But the Users/myname folder isn't likely to contain corrupt files that could cause serious problems is it? And if problems did arise after I pasted it in, wouldn't I be able to fix them by simply deleting the entire folder?
Again, the other problem I face is matching the name of the folder - Users/myname - with my new account name - MY NAME (I think!).

  • Time Machine after reinstall and new user acct

3 TB eSATA drive used for months as TM back up. Drive had 300GB or so free space available after last B/U before having to format my boot drive.
Following reinstall of OS 10.9.2,I was not able to transfer user files using TM after several trials - it simply locked up with no error message. So, I skipped using B/U and created a new uswer account with same name as previous user account but with a new password.  I then used the last B/U to manually restore user files and selected Apps.
In System Preferences/Time Machine, I selected the same 3 TB TM drive I had been using and left the excluded items unchanged.  The B/U calcualted size was 2.72 TB, the same as before my set up with new user account.  Prior to starting a new B'U I checked TM and found B/Us going back for quite a few weeks.
The next B/U for lack of space, with the mnessage that I only had 1.12 TB of space and the B/U needed 1.26 TB.  I recalled that I had added some items to one of the included external drives prior to the restore and after the last B/U, so I excluded those new additions.  The next B/U also failed and now the required space for the B/U was listed as greater than the first attempt.  More disturbing, the ONY remaining B/U on the 3 TB drive now, after several mnore effrots to exclude as much as possible, is the last B/U I did before the format and restore process.
In Finder, the TM disk shows 1.12 TB free.  It lists 2 B/Us - the last successful one and one fron this mornign listed as inprogress.
I changed my user account password to be the same as previously and logged out then bac in, then tried rebotting and after both times, the same failure occurred.  I used Sstem OPreferences to unselct the 3 TB drive and select another one, then reselected the 3 TB again - still no joy.
It appears that TM is unable to add to the exsiting B/U and is trying to create a new one, or that it doesn't see existing files in the old B/U as the same as the new ones and is trying to create lots of duplicates.

    Hi VK
    A supplementray question:
I have one i-mac happily backing up with Time Machine to an external hard drive.
I have just bought a second i-mac (stops the fighting!) and propose to use migration assistant to move my [admin] account from the old to the new i-mac leaving two other accounts on the old one. I see from your posts that it seems as if Time Machine will start a new back up series for the new i-mac's back ups. But what about the old i-mac? Will that continue to extend the existing Time Machine back up files, albeit without my transferred account and its files? If so, should I partition the external drive and start the new back ups from the new i-mac on this new partition. I'd like to end up with the old i-mac continuing to build its Time Machine back ups (less my account and its files) and have a new back up series from the new i-mac building to a separate partition on the external drive.
Does this make sense? I can't see an answer in the forum to what must be a reasonably common issue in this expandin mac world.

  • Delete iTunes and ReInstall for new user issues.

Gave husband my old computer when I got a new one. He needs HIS iTunes account installed. I deleted iTunes and anything associated, reinstalled but it still opens with my info. and when he plugs in his new phone - shows my phone info.
I've deleted, iTunes, QuickTime, associated files, searched and removed all files.
How do I permanently get rid of me on my old computer so he can start fresh.

You can reinstall iTunes, however you have to ensure that you drag the 'iTunes Music Library.xml' file back into itunes before you sync your phone. Doing this makes your library appear as it was before so you get back your preferences, playcount, etc.

  • Reinstall Unix -  new user

    Hi all,
I need to reinstall my Unix system CDE.
I tried to follow the guide, but it does not help
at all since the the system does not recognize
    the command 'uninstall-cde'.
    Could anybody help, please...??
    Thanks again,

    Hi Mike,
To remove just cde is not really a supported issue as it is incorporated in the os.
The only thing i can recommend is you move the .dt directory as a .orig, reboot to see if this recreates the .dt profile.
    or ... reinstall Solaris
    Hope this helps

Okay, that's got one thing ruled out at least.
Can you check something for me, big? I'd like to see if iTunes launches with the Bonjour Service disabled.
In your Start menu, right-click Computer and select "Manage".
    Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Perhaps maximise the screen to better see what's going on.)
Right-click the Bonjour Service and select "Properties".
In the General tab, set the Startup type to "Disabled":
    ... and click OK.
Restart the PC and try launching iTunes. Does it open this time?

First try to reset Firefox printer settings, if you are still unable to print you can then reset '''all '''firefox printer settings.
You mentioned there is no print.print_printer when you go to about:config. You have to type it in the actual '''filter '''field to pull it up.
    Reset firefox printer settings:
    1. In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter.
    2. In the '''Filter''' field, type '''print.print_printer.'''
    3. '''Right-click''' on the print.print_printer setting and select '''Reset.'''
    4. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (File menu in Windows XP) and then click Exit.
'''The first way was just simple reset of firefox printer settings. However, if it failed to solve the problem then you need a full reset of all firefox printer settings.
    1. Open your profile folder:
''At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button, go over to the Help menu (on Windows XP, click on the Help menu) and select Troubleshooting Information. The Troubleshooting Information tab will open.''
    2. Under the Application Basics section, click on Open Containing Folder. A window with your profile files will open.
''Note: If you are unable to open or use Firefox, follow the instructions in Finding your profile without opening Firefox.
    3. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (File menu in Windows XP) and then click Exit.
    4. In your profile folder, copy the prefs.js file to another folder to make a backup of it.
    5. Open the original prefs.js file in a text editor (such as Wordpad).
    6. Remove all lines in prefs.js that start with print. and save the file.

My last Time Machine back-up is 45 days old and only of User Account files (not entire HD) and I must now reinstall Lion (via internet) without  performing a new back-up. Will any new User Account files, since my last back-up, be lost when Lion reinstalls ?

Reinstalling OS X doesn't affect user data, provided nothing goes wrong. But it would be very unwise to assume that nothing will go wrong, especially if you're having (unspecified) system issues. You should try to back up all data before you reinstall or do anything else. There are ways to do that, even if you're unable to boot.
If your backups include only user files, you won't be able to access them in Setup Assistant.

  • Clean reinstall vs. New User

I am trying to troubleshoot some software that used to work perfectly on this system. I tried creating a new, fresh User and the software still crashed. I tried booting in the new user AND running in Safe Boot (shift key held down) at the same time! Still crashed! I have tried every other troubleshooting technique and, since I know the software worked once, I think it may be time to try the clean reinstall.
BUT, what is the difference between the clean reinstall and creating a new user/safe boot? I thought the latter cleared your system of all “corrupting influences” as well.

There is no such thing as a clean reinstall:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
If software still crashes after creating a new user, its preferences are systemwide, or it has drivers or fonts it needs to access which have become antiquated with the new operating system
If you are using cache cleaning software, that can actually create application crashes.

  • Can I transfer CC for Teams membership (Photoshop) to a new user on the same machine without uninstalling and reinstalling software? i.e. one user left new user started needing the same software.

We have Creative Cloud for Teams, most users using Photoshop.  One user left the company and has been replaced by another user.  I removed the first user's membership and assigend it to the new user.  When she runs Photoshop, she gets a 00 Days left message.  Photoshop still seems to be useable right now but I'm wondering if I need to uninstall Photoshop and re-install it using her credentials?  Seems like a lto of unnecessary work to me.

    Hi Batterry,
There is no need for removal of the product . You can simply launch the product , click on Help>Sign out . Close the product and sign in with the new user's Adobe ID & Password. This should activate the product .

  • Unable to upgrade iTunes 10.1 or add new user

I have iTunes 10.1.0.56 installed on a Windows 7 PC.  Whenever I try to upgrade to any newer version, the installation stalls.  The dialog box says that the program is trying to use a resource that is unavailable, then it prompts me to try to find the folder containing iTunes64.msi, which is the installation program itself.  One of the suggested locations is "C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\iTunes.exe"; another is C:\Program Data\Apple Computer\Installer Cache\iTunes 10.1.0.22\ which was probably the first version I loaded after I bought the PC.  I have tried over-writing the version number; I have also found temp folders in cache from previous upgrade attempts, but none of those folder names work.  I keep getting the message that (whatever) is not a valid installation package.  Eventually I have to cancel the upgrade.
iTunes works fine for me and my children on our respective user profiles.  We all have iPods and used iTunes regularly.  My wife up to now is a non-iTunes user but she just got an iPod Classic for her birthday.  However, when she launches iTunes from her profile, the installation program launches and then stalls with the same error messages as above. So she can't use iTunes and without having her own iTunes account, her iPod is useless.
I have seen this problem or similar issues discussed on other boards, mainly involving older versions of iTunes and/or Windows.  I have pretty much the latest of both but can neither upgrade iTunes or set up my wife as a new user.  Can somebody out there help me??  Thanks!

I also encountered the same problem.
and yes, I uninstalled and reinstalled itunes 10.1.1 bla bla blahhh....
Same issue!!! itunes cannot open cuz the mobile device support not started etc..
but when reinstalled prior itunes version 9.2 its gone
    and issue fixed.
    i can sync my 3G.
but not my 4G. it says you need to upgrade to 10.1 or above
spending the whole night to fix the problem which never occured b4
i finally find out one thing.
pl keep in mind im not a computer exprt
i tried this and it worked, i don know what fixed it, bt it works
try this at your own risk. some comp genius will tell us weather this way is right or not.
    ok. lets start...
in your desktop make a new folder. name it Kmh_\CoreFP
try uninstalling the newer version 10.1
only the itunes not other mobile div suprt, application suprt etc.
    dont mind the following order:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
    and reinstall itunes 9.2
    go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple
you wil find a folder named "CoreFP"
copy it and paste to Kmh_\CoreFP
    uninstall itunes 9.2
    and reinstall itunes 10.1 again
    go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple
you wil find folder named "CoreFP"
find the difference in properties comparing the one u stored in Kmh_\CoreFP
ok delete it and replace it with the one we stored stored in Kmh_\CoreFP
restart the computer and start itunes now
    what happens?
    best of luck.
    -Kmhm63
    reinstall the newer version 10.1
I would suggest that you revert back to prior working version until Apple comes out with an update that fixes what 10.1.1 broke.

  • Bug Report: Can't exit system preferences after creating new users

Setting up a brand new Mac Mini (Late 2014) with Yosemite. (Came installed with Yosemite). I got an i7 version with 16GB of ram and a 256GB solid state drive.
When I create a new user (either administrator or regular) and then attempt to exit from the "User and Groups" dialog box under "System Preferences" I get an error message that "System Preferences" is busy and that I have to wait. I tried waiting up to 5 minutes and still cannot close the dialog. The only way to kill the dialog box is to use Force Quit under the Apple menu. After killing the dialog with Force Quit, the newly created account DOES seem to work ok. It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes for Yosemite to simply create the default directories for a new account, so something is clearing getting wedged.
    Additional details
This has occurs every time I try and create a new user (and yes I have Administrator privileges).
No other applications (either from Apple or other software publishers) have been installed on this mac.
This occurs whether the new user is set to use an iCloud Password or a Separate Password.
There IS a live wi-fi connection to the Internet.
If I create a second administrator account and then login with that account and attempt to create a new user the same thing happens.
I'm rather shocked to encounter such an obvious bug in the first 5 minutes of using a BRAND NEW Mac.
Any suggestions for how to fix this?

I just tested it on my system and cannot replicate your problem. So, I would attribute it to a defective installation and suggest you do the following:
Install or Reinstall Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Can I migrate data from "old" user account to new user after clean install?

I've just done a clean install of Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro (I erased system drive before install). I've upgraded SL to 10.6.2 using a generic administrator account. And I have an exact bootable clone of my old data (SuperDuper backup on external drive).
I don't care about migrating all my old software; I'll reinstall it. But I would like to migrate system preferences, mail accounts, iCal calendars, and keychains etc. And some silly part of me wants to REname my username. (Also: I can't use Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant because some part of the old image has Microsoft Entourage hooks in Mail and MobileMe that I want to get rid of.)
So here's my question: if I create a new account with the NEW user name I want to start using, can I STILL then copy over my old data? I don't know which of the below stuff has my old user name embedded in the data. Here's the list:
    Your data in ~/Documents
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
    ~/Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
Also in ~/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need)

what exactly do you mean by that? you can use Migration Assistant to migrate your user only (no applications). that should most likely suffice and i don't think Entourage will be a problem. you'll have to delete various entourage folders in your documents folder afterward if you don't plan on using it anymore.
So here's my question: if I create a new account with the NEW user name I want to start using, can I STILL then copy over my old data?
yes, as bdmarsha said, your user name is not mentioned anywhere in your home directory.
