Reinstalled iTunes 6 and It Won't Open Cause Library updated in Ver 7

I have a 1GB iPod Nano. I downloaded and installed iTunes 7 after being prompted and had a lot of the issues posted here. So, I uninstalled Ver 7 and reinstalled Ver 6. After rebooting, when I try to open iTunes 6, I get the message "The file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." iTunes will not even open now. All I want to do is go back to when my iPod actually worked.
Any suggestions?
Dell Inspiron 8200   Windows XP   1 GB RAM, 30 GB HDD

Go into My Documents > Music > iTunes.
Delete the new library file.
Go into the Previous iTunes Library Folder.
Copy your old library file to the iTunes folder.
or
Delete old file as above.
You should be able to open iTunes at this point.
Drag your iTunes music folder into the open Library window in iTunes.

When I try to reinstall iTunes and click on my iTunes Setup it reads "A later version of iTunes is already on this machine, installation cannot continue". So if i go into my control pannel and go to my remove program file, and try to uninstall itunes it reads "A later version of iTunes is already on this machine, installation cannot continue"
Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Safari, iMail, iTunes, and Dashboard won't open

A week ago, Safari, iMail, iTunes, and Dashboard won't open but other applications will, like Mozilla, iPhoto, Word, Excel, etc. Does anyone have any ideas of how I can get Safari and the other programs to open? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi, I'm replying to myself to add more information on my case. I wasted half my day yesterday trying to fix this, looking into forums and trying to talk to people about it and there it absolutely no answer. Yesterday I installed the programs necessary to sync my phone in my wife's macbook and nothing bad happened. So I'm guessing it isn't about the phone plugins I installed. I've tried to download combo updates but they crash as soon as I try to install them - I even tried to install a 10.4.10 update.
This is the error message I get:

I put part of in on google to check if there was anybody discussing anything related and someone suggested - bizarrely enough - updating adobe reader. I did it just in case and, of course, it didn't work. I repaired permissions a million times already, I rebooted in safe mode, I scaned the computer with apple jack, I verified the disk with diskutility - which showed nothing. I tried downloading an anti-virus (ClamXav), but I couldn't open it also, I trashed my prefs, I deleted all internet plugins, but still.... nothing. I'm about to quit and take it to the very expensive - yet reliable - authorized tech support apple has in Rio. Any ideas, anyone?

That suggests that another application has stashed old QuickTime componentry in your system files.
So just in case we'll go looking for older QuickTime componentry in the most common locations for it to be stashed.
First we'll need to change some view settings.
In your Start menu, open Computer.
In your Organise menu, select Folder Options.
In the View tab, make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected, and Hide extensions for known file types is unchecked.
    Click OK.
Now in Computer, open your C:\ drive (or whichever drive you have your operating system installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
If you have a 32-bit version of Windows, open the "System32" folder.
If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, open the "SysWOW64" folder.
What files and folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the title? (In a standard installation of Quicktime you should be seeing precisely two files... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

You aren't likely to get an answer with that type of attitude. BTW, you are not contacting Apple on these forums. We are all volunteer end users just like you. If you want support, then call AppleCare and you can get one-on-one assistance.

  • Safari, Mail, iTunes and Skype won't open

    Hi there Apple-Support-Team,
a few days ago I did an update of Safari, suggested automatically by Apple, but wasn't sure if the update was successfull (I had to leave the house).
Now all applications with internet connection (Safari, Mail, iTunes, Skype) won't open anymore. Not from the dock or the application folder. I checked my internet connection which seems to be working.
I've seen quite some reports in this forum but I am not sure if I'm having the same trouble as the other users. I get no error reports or anything else, the apps just don't open.

    Welcome to the forums!
Did you restart your Mac after the install?
If your Safari keeps crashing, or if you are updating Safari (or just have) and it is misbehaving:
N.B. Never delete Safari, never run it under Rosetta, don't use proxy settings, and don't change the application's name or move it from the top level of the Applications Folder to a sub-folder.
(If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall. Alternatively you can download Safari directly:
Safari 4.1.1 for Tiger can be downloaded here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1069
Safari 5.0.1 for Leopard (and Snow Leopard) can be downloaded from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1070
Make sure you download the correct version for your system.
Also, observe the recommended procedure for installing software: repair permissions and close all applications, install, then repair permissions again.)
Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta and which was updated to v.3.1.2, and now Tiger uses Safari 4.1.1 and Leopard uses Safari 5.0.1, as does Snow Leopard albeit a different version. If these latest versions of Safari are not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
(Trying to revert to a previous version of Safari can have repercussions, as previous versions of Safari used a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, but if you really want to do this post back for instructions on the safe way to do so.)
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Add-ons that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens, Saft, AcidSearch and Pithhelmet, and the dreaded CT Toolbar. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for the latest version of Safari on your current operating system.
You must also ensure that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of Security Updates. These require a restart and a permission repair.
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • Hard Disk/Library/InputManagers
    • Home/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates and updates to Safari (they can always be added back one-by-one later).
Lastly, the Safari updates require a restart of your Mac, and sometimes even a double restart is required.

  • Itunes and safari won't open

My itunes stopped working after I came back from vacation. I tried uninstalling everything and updating to 10.1 but it won't open. When I click it, it shows up in the task manager for a moment and then disappears with no error messages. Quicktime works fine but when I downloaded and installed safari it won't open either.
Then I created another user account and tried it there and it doesn't work. It also looks like the plugin for adobe acrobat has stopped working as well. I have to right click and save as to view pdfs. I tried disabling the bonjour service and restarting the computer but it still doesn't work.
Any ideas? I have windows 7 x64 professional
    Thanks

  • Safari, iTunes and Acquisition won't open

Hi everyone - hopefully someone can help.....
About a week ago, I was having problems connecting to my wi-fi through my airport. I reinstalled OS X, I was able to get the airport working and go online w/ Entourage but when I click on Safari, iTunes and Acquisition, nothing happens - Safari, the icon bounces, then the black triangle appears underneath it and no window appears, I can't even select anything from the dropdown menu. iTunes, I connect my ipod, it doesn's start open it up like it usually does and when I click on it, it bounces, no triangle and nothing. Same thing with Acquisition. I was having problems w/ my ipod about a month ago, I couldn't reset it and all of this happened after I completed one of the software updates - I'm thinking it might be music/software related? I did a hardware test and it found no problems. Please help!!!

  • I reinstalled itunes and it still wont open

I re-installed itunes and it still won't open

Hey I know how fusterating it is. I have an ipod nano (2nd gen) and I am having the same problem. It's been over a month now. I've tried to uninstall and reinstall it and it still won't come up. I click on it and it says "itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close." I have sent error reports many times and still nothing. I spent over $200 and the product doesn't work. Let me tell ya, I am very unhappy and dissapointed. Please someone help.

  • Just installed iTunes and it won't open

I just downloaded iTunes 10.6.1, twice, onto my new compter. I have Windows 7, and a 64-bit Operating System. I did download the 64-bit version of iTunes, so I do not think that is the problem.
The first time the installation worked fine. I plugged in my iPod Touch to sync it, and I did so. I briefly closed out of it and went to reopen and it would not. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled it. It still would not open. After the second installation was finished, there was a dialogue box that said it would open iTunes when I pressed "Finish". I clicked Finish, and iTunes did not open.
I looked through one Troubleshoot guide, and it said to open iTunes in "Safe Mode" but iTunes wouldn't even open.
I'm not really sure what to do... Any help would be great!
    Thank you!

Try restoring your system to the earlier time and then reinstall your iTunes. You might have installed or downloaded something that makes iTunes weird.

  • Itunes and Quicktime won't open.

I recently had a problem with Itunes, which deleted anything new I purchased or downloaded. I found out that if I rebuilt the library the problem could be solved, but I didn't want to risk losing any data so I didn't do it. I figured I'd wait for an update that would fix it and a couple days later I downloaded Itunes 7.3.1. The download did not go smoothly at all. During the course of it: it had to stop downloading and download both Itunes and Quicktime seperatly and it kept saying that my Quicktime was not up to date (something it's been saying for the last couple months). I've tried fixing that before, but when I do it prevents me from going into Itunes.
Now after downloading 7.3.1 neither one of the programs will open. Itunes says, "Itunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration." and Quicktime says, "Runtime Error! ... This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way."
I'm starting to get really annoyed with Itunes, for the last couple months it's had nothing but problems. Can someone please help me.
      Windows XP

    Hi Clyde33.
Itunes says, "Itunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration."
Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.
Quicktime says, "Runtime Error! ... This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way."

  • Mail (and Safari) won't open after Security Update 2007-004

I have a PowerBook G4 running 10.3.9. The machine was running fine (I was checking mail, browsing the web) when my weekly scheduled update opened. Per it's suggestion, I installed Security Update 2007-004.
Upon restart, both Mail and Safari will NOT open. The icon for each on the dock simply "bounces" once when clicked then nothing else. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Any thoughts on a fix?

Installing a system update while you continue using the computer as if nothing was going on there is a really bad idea.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Security Update, which may not have been installed properly. It may also be necessary to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.
