Reinstalled leopard, need help getting time machine to recover old document

Hey,
I reinstalled leopard with completely deleting everything and reinstalling. I was planning to use time machine to restore my computer. Anyways, when I finally got to the point where it was done reinstalling and leopard was working, it asked me do you want to load from time machine, so I clicked it and it failed. But it said there was a way I could do this at another time. Does anyone know how I go about doing this so I can get all the stuff I backed up on time machine back onto my newly reformatted mac?

Thank you for asking. I solved my problem last night. I reloaded the system using the "erase and restore" option this time. Then, once I reached the Time Machine level, TM could see the old files. I did have to restore the files one area at a time. I could not launch a general system restore.

  • I need help getting Time Machine to recognize my old files

I recently was forced to restore my system. I was using Leopard (10.5.1). I have several backups on my external drive from that "old" system. After I restored by system, Leopard will not recognize the old files. Any ideas about how I can get Leopard to see these files so I can restore?
    Thank You

  • Need Help Regarding Time Machine Backup from Old Drive to  New Drive

    Hi All,
I have a 250Gb hard drive which is my Time Machine Backup which is full now, so, I got another 1TB drive. Now, the problem is how can I transfer the old back from the old drive to my new drive which is empty and then continue to use the new 1TB drive as my new TM Backup.
Please if anybody can help me really appreciate the efforts,
    Thanks In advance
    saurabh

you can clone the old TM drive to the new one using either the restore function in disk utility or one of 3rd party cloners like CCCloner or Superduper. once the cloning is finished, select the new drive as the TM drive in TM system preferences.

  • How do I get Time Machine to delete old files?

On threads for earlier operating systems I've seen similar questions, and it seems Apple hasn't resolved the problem that although Time Machine says it will delete old files when the disc is full, it doesn't do it, even though my hard drive has only ~300 GB of files on it and my external hard drive has 1.5 T, it does nothing to delete old files automatically.  This hasn't always been the case.  The first few entries were deleted awhile back, freeing space, but that has stopped happening.  Any suggestions?  Do I have to start with a fresh external hard drive?

Thanks.  Although the reset did nothing, by deleting enough old backups (a VERY slow process) I could get it to free enough space for another backup.  It's not clear to me why it cannot do this automatically.
Time Machine will delete old backups, if it can.  So something must be wrong.  See #C4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If nothing there helps, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages here.

  • Need Help using Time Machine

    Hi
I'm trying to make backups using Time Machine but an error occurs "Time Machine can't continue because a problem with a file. The problem could be temporal please try later"
Because I need to have my info backed up tried to copy to another HD so other error "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -41)
I have noted that some files are blocked, but can't be unblocked clearing the mark of blocking, so them can't be moved to the trash basket.

There is a mark on the icon file. When you access "get Info" of a file one of the attributes is "Protected" I can't remove this mark on it, so I can't remove the file from disck

  • Need help copying Time Machine backups to new drive

I was attempting to move my Time Machine backups from one hard drive to a newer hard drive, by copying the Backups folder. It gets through the process of preparing the files to copy but then as it starts to copy the file I get an dialog error box saying that it can't convert one file and that I need to install a newer version of IWork. I don't have IWork installed on this computer, but I have used pages on the iCloud website. I have attached a screen shot showing the error. The copying stops at this point. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?

That usually works better than a Finder copy and is often faster.

  • PLEASE HELP! How do I get Time Machine to remove old backups?

It is my understanding that Time Machine will never fill up the drive it's on because it will remove old backups to make room for new ones. It's not doing that for me. The drive Time Macine is backing up to has filled up & will not allow any more to be written to it, so I can't do backups. I don't see anywhere that I can change a setting to fix this problem. It would be VERY helpful if someone would walk me though how to fix this problem. I've had to turn Time Machine off because it's locking up my system trying to write to the drive.
    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!

Thank you. I've gone there & read what's at the link. I've tried going into Time Machine & for some reason I can only see backups (in Time Machine) that go back to earlier today. However, if I actually look on the disc that I'm backing up to, I see database files that go back to April of this year. I looked earlier today & I saw files that went all the way back to October of LAST year, but I just did a big installation & that must of put things over the edge.
Anyway, I'd like to say that I saw an answer to my problem at Pondini's site, but I've been there looking around since before I wrote this thread asking for help & I just don't see anything that looks like it will specifically help me on this situation.
    I'm still stuck.

  • I need help with Time Machine - Won't back up properly

I'm new to Macs, my MBP is barely a month old, so bare with me.  I do understand computers pretty well and I've been trying like **** to read up and fix this on my own, but it's starting to tick me off.
Okay so I got a "WD My Passport" external HD for Xmas and my goal is to have Time Machine back everything up on it.  The problem started after a backup was halfway through and froze.  I thought wiping the Passport clean and starting over would do the trick, but it was tricky figuring out how to erase "Backup In Progess Files"
I read up on the "Disk Utility" stuff and partioned the Passport, which set it back to normal it seemed like.  So I tried the backup one more time, but again it froze a little less than half way through.
So now "Disk Utility" won't even let me erase the Passport or Partition it - it tries for about 10 minutes and eventually says it can't "unmount".  Yet when I enter Time Machine it shows that some files have been backed up in "Star Wars Mode", but it seems like that's only saved to the MBP itself?
Please correct me if I'm wrong with my logic, and any help is much appreciated.  I'll provide further input if it helps too, just let me know.

Sounds like a bad Passport may be the culprit. If Disk Utility can't erase or properly mount the drive, it may have serious problems.
I've used Passports for Time Machine with great success, but I've also had to replace 2 of them as they eventually went bad. Try another external hard drive and I'll bet it works.

  • New Mac-user need help with time machine

Hi. I have jut got rid of everything that reminds me of a pc, and installed an Imac + one macbook and a macbook pro in the house. I have also installed an airport extreme and connected an external 500gb drive + a printer to it. The idea was to use this network drive as a network backup disk for the different machines.
My question is: Can Time machine use this networkdisk to backup the different machines connected to the network? If so, how do I set it up. Right now this disk is not listed when I try to configure time machine.
Hope somebody have time to answer.
    Thanks.

Unfortunately even though Apple had touted the AEBS USB2 HD use with TimeMachine (TM) they pulled it from the Leopard TM feature list about 1 week before releasing Leopard GNBuild 9A581.
At this time Apple does not support use of the AEBS USB HD for use TM.
I strongly suspect we will see this feature return in one of the next two updates Apple releases for Leopard.
In the meantime be patient and I don't recommend you use a hack to circumvent the current TM limitation.

  • HT3275 Need help with Time Machine back up

I keep receiving this message: Time Machine could not complete the back up. The back up disk image "Volumes/Data/A**** W**** Mac Book Pro. Sparse Bundle" could not be created. (error 1). Time Machine and Airport are up to date, as is the Macbook Pro. I have not been able to find a work around for this error. Any advice would be appreciated.

There are different reasons for that problem. Follow the steps of this page > http://pondini.org/TM/C17.html

  • I need to use Time Machine to recover my old Mail Folders

I switched to a different ISP company for my email. When I setup the new account, it removed all my old Inbox and other folders (Drafts) in Mail. I've been using the Apple Time Machine - so I'd like to retrieve the proper file(s) so I can get some much needed DRAFTS in my old mail account.
What file(s) is needed to copy back so I can see my old mail folders? Thanks!

Csound1's comment may have some bearing here.
Although Time Machine backups to a network share are not officially supported by Apple,, a lot of users try it anyway with the AirPort Extreme...an equivalent Apple router with similar features to the Netgear...and they report mixed results.
Works fine for some, not for others. No one can really explain why this is, other than Apple does not support it.
As a test, if you connect the drive directly to your Mac computer, can Time Machine "see" the drive that way?
If Time Machine can see the drive when it is directly attached to the computer, but not see it when connected to the Netgear, then the options may have run out.
Other than trying a post on the Netgear forum to see if any users have been successful with this, I'm out of ideas at this point.

  • Get time machine to see old backups

    Hi all,
recently i had a problem that resulted in having to restore from a time machine backup. Since then i have been unable to see my previous backups within time machine
The sparse bundle is still intact, i have not allowed it to backup knowing that it will more than likely nuke my old backups.
    So far i have tried:
    - removing and reselecting the time capsule
    - removing com.apple.timemachine.plist
    - inheriting the existing sparsebundle.
any help on this would be much appreciated.
    Cheers

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

  • Need help getting the data from my old address book

Can someone tell me what file I need to copy and where to restore all my addresses from my old address book. I elected not to migrate everything to avoid problems, but that is one important and long list.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

Look in the folder ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ for the files containing your data, where ~ is the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon.

  • Need help with a copy of an old document Using Adobe PSE 8.0

I have a copy of a document (Will) written in ink, in 1782.  The problem is, about half of the ink has faded over time, so that only the bottom portion of the Will is still readable.  I wish to be able to alter the image so that somehow someway I will be able to read the "faded" ink.  I have three different copies of this document, as people attempted to copy the document, as best they could.  I have been (told) that one image is very close to what the actual document looks like.  I'm not experienced, in altering scanning settings (ex. HP Officejet 6500, All-in-One).  I know how to scan documents (at the simpliest level), but I'm not very experienced in using the Adobe PSE 8.0 software.  So, I don't know if it's capable of helping me with this problem or not.  The ink is very faded, you can still see most of the words (of the faded ink) but just not enough to be able to decern what each word is.  Transcribing this Will, is of the utmost importance, because it may lead to answers about the family of this individual.  Any tuturials or suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you, for your time, consideration, and cooperation, I truly appreciate it.

These are two samples of the "faded ink", that I want to resurrect, so to speak.  I scanned them in grayscale.
