Reinstalled Library, now disk is full

I have a MacBook and I recently upgraded my OS to 10.9, so that I could upgrade my iPhoto from 08 to 11, so that I could create and purchase photo books. I fortunately backed up everything right before I did this. When I upgraded iPhoto, it required me to upgrade/prepare my library. I tried to do this - first saw that there were over 9,000 photos to be prepared, but then got a message that there might not be sufficient space on the disk and did I want to continue. I chose "No" because I didn't want to lose anything or continue if I didn't know what was going to happen. I tried repairing permissions and all of the options in the iPhoto rebuild menu (holding down Option and Control when opening iPhoto). After that, I could not find my original iPhoto library. When I checked the package contents of iPhoto Library, the Masters folder (0 kb) showed folders with dates that should have been full of photo files, but they were empty.
So, I assumed my original 08 library was gone and used my backup - copied 54 GB to my desktop, opened the new iPhoto and switched libraries to the original full library from my backup. It worked great! All my photos, videos, projects, etc. are now in the new iPhoto.
My problem now is that my startup disk is full and it's asking me to delete files. If for some reason, I've duplicated my photo files and now have an extra 54 GB on my hard drive, I'd be happy to delete them. But I'm not sure where to look, or where to start deleting. I don't want to delete the original photo files that iPhoto points to when searching for those files, and end up with blurry thumbnails in iPhoto. Am I correct in understanding it that way? Is there a simple solution to free up space?

by default your photo are copied to the masters folder in the iPhoto library and you can delete the source copy
The solution to safety is to have a good back at all times - I do two daily (time machine hourly and a clone daily) plus an occsional off site backup and I do not delete my photos from the sd card for at least a year
If space is an issue you can run iPhoto on an external drive that is on a wired connection and is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) - and you can have two libraries - a master on an external drive and a smaller one on your internal drive and use iPhoto Library Manager tomove photos between them
If you have alisises in your masters folder then that indicates that you have changed the default settings to reference the original photosa - if you have done that then you can not delete the originals and you will finbd it very difficult to move your library to a different location since one requirement of a referenced library (and one reason that is it strongly not recommended) is that the path to the originalsvcan not change - have you unchedked the iPhoto preference to copy imported items to the iPhoto library?

  • IPhoto Library Says disk is full and it isnt!!

    Hello Al
My first post on here - have tried following various other threads relating to this but my problem is that I that although I am getting a message in iphoto saying I cant import as iphoto library is full - it is by no means full. The library is on my hard drive which has 500gig free!!
I do have external hard drives etc. and can of course copy the library to these - but I don't understand why when I have 500gig free I am being told the disk containing my iphoto library is full?
Please help as I have so many photos on my camera I would like to import so I can make some Christmas prezzies! Thanks
    Claire

What size have you allocated to the dmg?
There is no need for this with iPhoto 09.
You can simply drag the Library to the Users/Shared Folder.
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
If that still reports the same issue, then Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • My Mac is telling me that my disk is full. I have bought an external hard drive and have just listened to a youtube tutorial on how to move iTunes library to the external hard drive. If I do this can I still load new media on my Mac without the external?

my Mac is telling me that my disk is full. I have bought an external hard drive and watched a youtube tutorial on moving iTunes library to external hard drive. Will I still be able to use iTunes on my Mac for new media or will this now only work through my external hard drive?

To do this you need to learn the details of how iTunes works.  For example, you just said, "leave my iTunes on my computer".  iTunes is the application itself so of course it has to be on your computer.  That said, I therefore don't know what you mean when you say leave iTunes on your computer.  The phrasing of your question suggests to me, if I may be frank, you don't understand how iTunes works fully and we can't just give you a "do this" answer and have it work out.  It would be too easy to make a mess of things.

Yes, you can download media and delete it again (but if it is from the iTunes Store there is the possibility you can't always download it again).  Of course if you want to keep a copy you can archive it.  I have done that with some files for which I have no room on my computer.  I transfer them to an external hard drive and delete the reference to the file (but not the file itself) from my library.  If I want a quick listen I go to the file on the drive and use Quicktime player or something else non-iTunes so I don't have to have it added to iTunes and delete again.  I don't know if that is the solution you are looking for.  I could leave the reference in iTunes but if the file can't be located by iTunes it will tell me there is a broken link = !  I guess I could live with that except I periodically scan my library for broken links and don't want it getting confused with ones I have done deliberately and ones suggesting I am really missing a file somewhere.
Another possibility is to make a second iTunes library for material you are archiving and only use that library when the computer is using the external drive.  There are tricky aspects to dong that but it is a possibility too.
The simple solution for most people with computers with tiny drives (as most seem to be these days) is to put their whole iTunes library on an external drive and use it from there.

  • ITunes library on external drive won't load, iTunes says disk is full and only partial library loads. What is it doing, making another copy?

I have an archive of all my music on an external drive. I wanter to play the music on another computer. When I hooked up the drive and launched iTunes with option key, I linked up the library on the external. iTunes gets part way through linking then says can't load the rest as the disk is full. What disk? What is iTunes doing that it needs more hard drive space for files that already exist? Why can't iTunes just see the files on the external and play them without this seeming dupe process?

Tried hooking up my external drive to my Mini. This morning my Mini had all my info listed, but I couldn't play any songs, for obvious reasons. Now, my Mini is hooked up to the external, iTunes prefs are set on the path to the external - but there is no music in iTunes. No lists, no songs, nada. Just a virgin iTunes window. ***?

  • I have a mac air and it says my star up disk is full, now when I log in it just has a blank white lit screen and I cannot go further

After logging in, theres just a blank white backlit screen and I cannot go further. It also has been showing on the screen
that the startup disk is full.  I already tried diagnostics and it says hardware is fine.

You will have to erase your drive because it has a corrupted directory resulting from allowing the drive to become full.
Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

i used the "erase free space " option in disk utility and now my imac says the disk is full and wont let me download songs. please help!

You could try repairing permissions with disk utility, I don't think you will have the option to repair the drive but you could verify it.
This may help you delete the files that DU made but did not remove when erasing the free space.

When you get your SL disk it will not have the iLife applications, that would have been on the second install disk that should have been with the computer. I forget which version of iLife you will need for SL but I think it is this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Apple-iLife-Single-User-Mac/dp/B003XKRZES/ref=sr_1_1?ie= UTF8&qid=1409607702&sr=8-1&keywords=apple+ilife+11
A search of the forums will confirm or deny this.
As to whether a clean install will cure your problem, i.e. partition the HDD and install I would expect it to be yes, but there are no guarantees it is an old machine.

  • Had to reinstall Panther - now CD won't recognize OS9 disks

I have a B&W G3 with 2 hard drives in it. Had to replace the larger of the two, and of course it was the one with my startup system (or one of them.) I could boot from my 9.2 startup disk which was on the other hard drive. I made a copy, using the disk utility restore function, on to a backup drive so that I didn't lose everything on the crashed disk. Then I replaced the hard drive, partitioned it and reinstalled Panther all the way to the most recent update. I was able to capture just about 98% of all of my previous system setting, extensions, etc., yet now when I put in an older CD (that was comaptible with OS9) it says it is "unrecognizable" and wants to inititialize or eject. When I go to system profiler it says there is no OS9 drivers for the CD. It is the original CD ROM from Apple, a matshita CDR. How can I recapture the driver? Where would it be?

    Daisy:
Since you already have everything in place on separate partitions, and it is so much of a hassle moving stuff around, I suggest you leave things alone until you need to something by way of re-installation.
In terms of backing up a firewire external HDD would be prefereable as you could then use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone to the firewire external, which you can then use as an emergency startup drive. It makes backing up a lot easier. SuperDuper is very easy to use and efficient. CCC works well, too, but is slightly more complex.

So, Cornelius, what you are saying is that I am making it harder for things to function smoothly? The reason I have been doing the partitions is to save time when running something like Disk Utility. It goes a lot faster on a 20GB than it would on a 100GB, or am I wrong in assuming that?
Now I have the daunting task of removing everything that I have finally gotten in place to the backup drive, and reformatting my MAC! UGH! Is there an easy way to do this without re-installing the major programs I use? When I was getting the data off of the previous bad drive, I dragged and dropped them onto the backup disk (a Simpletech 160GB USB) and that was very time consuming. I think it was slow because I have the old USB 1.1 and the backup is a USB 2.0. I did not use the backup software that came with it, because I was in panic mode and accidentally erased the program when I formatted the backup drive. Now I have it, but haven't used it yet. Even so, I was able to drag and drop most of the files and it worked fine, but I had to reinstall the OSX, QuarkXpress, and Indesign. This has been going on for a couple weeks and I am still tweaking things to get it right.
When I used the "restore" function it put the drive on the backup but not in a folder. When I dragged and dropped it went across like folders. Do you have any advice for me to make this less painful?
+One more point - if I did use the install OS9 drivers the first time, and it didn't, what would it do if it was only one partition? Would I get them back or not?+
You can check to see if the OS 9 drivers are installed by going to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More info > Hardware > ATA. In the lower section of the main panel go down the list and look for OS 9 drivers installed. It will say yes, or no.
    Good luck.

After confirming that all your stuff is on the drive, delete the photos you have copied. You will need to empty the iPhototrash to free up the space.

  • My start up disk is full and the now the mac will not start

How do I get on my computer when my start up disk is full?

If you don't have a recent backup, then all your files will be lost.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Imovie won't let me save my movie as a file, and it says ''startup disk'' is full!

I made a movie on Imovie and it won't let me download or convert, I don't know what else I can do, and also it says my disk is full, and my macbook is 64 and its impossible, i dont have that much. please help me. I want to save my movie and fix disk because is making my computer slower and doesn't let me save anything because is ''full''. I need to find a way to save the movie complete and as a file and make my computer faster and with it's original memory.
    HELP!.

I have the same problem and then some. I movie won't share this particular project, but it also won't save any changes made to it or any other project. At least that's what it started doing, now when I go to even try to make any changes it wigs out and things get scrambled in the Project window and it plays video from another project.
When I create a new project, the Share menu is available, but it won't save changes to that project either. And by that I mean I can put stuff in the project and do whatever, but as soon as I quit and relaunch the application, the project is empty. I did figure out that if I make changes in a new project and immediately share it to the media browser that it will save the changes, but then it messes up my other project even more somehow!
Tried archive and install, deleting plists, reinstalling iMovie and iLife support stuff (twice), repairing permissions, and changing permissions in the project package. Any other ideas?
