  • Converting MPEG-4 Audio Files back to iTunes

So my computer crashed from Vista's Service Pack 1. The cause of the crash was unknown at the time and I thought I had a virus so instead of backing up files which could contain virus's. I just reformatted my computer.
Now I have about 10 gigs of legal music from various place (CD's, iTunes, Friends) which are all already on my iPod. I know there are 3rd party programs to retrieve these songs, but I know a little bit about computers so I just did it myself.
The problem I am having is converting the MPEG-4(m4a) files so iTunes recognizes that these are music files like a MPEG-3(mp3). For some reason the actual CD's I bought when burned saved under both file types, I have no idea why. So basically I am missing about 1/3 of my library.
Any help on how to get these files back onto iTunes from my iPod without re-burning 100's of CD's?

Some of those solutions are free. You can also take a look at this user tip:

  • How to send files back to TC from external hard drive quickly?

    Hi,
I have just archived 500gb of my TC to external hard drive which was directly connected to TC. I have replaced failing hard drive in TC on 2GB (£50) and reformated gain. Now is ready to be used. Then I wanted to put archive files back onto TC from that external hard drive which is directly connected to TC. The problem is that when I was archiving it files where send directly from TC to external hard drive and it took approximately 5 hours to do it. Now to reverse all that taking about 5 days because for some stupid reason hard drive is sending all that files through my desktop and back to TC again.
Is there any faster way to do it?

A: you DONT modify your TM backup, youd just add files into the same HD, however thats no good because........
Youre trying to create a nasty choke point for data failure by putting time machine AND your files on ONE DRIVE,
very bad idea,   hard drives are cheap as dirt, buy another,  2 MINIMUM external redundant backups of your vital data, period.
also,  cloud isnt a place for data archives, and not safe, not secure.
The Tragedy that will be, the tragedy that never should be
Always presume correctly that your data is priceless and takes a very long time to create and often is irreplaceable. Always presume accurately that hard drives are extremely cheap, and you have no excuse not to have multiple redundant copies of your data copied on hard drives and squirreled away several places, lockboxes, safes, fireboxes, offsite and otherwise.
Hard drives aren't prone to failure…hard drives are guaranteed to fail (the very same is true of SSD). Hard drives dont die when aged, hard drives die at any age, and peak in death when young and slowly increase in risk as they age.
Never practice at any time for any reason the false premise and unreal sense of security in thinking your data is safe on any single external hard drive. This is never the case and has proven to be the single most common horrible tragedy of data loss that exists.
Many 100s of millions of hours of lost work and data are lost each year due to this single common false security. This is an unnatural disaster that can avoid by making all data redundant and then redundant again. If you let a $60 additional redundant hard drive and 3 hours of copying stand between you and years of work, then you've made a fundamental mistake countless 1000s of people each year have come to regret.

  • A solution to having media files in your iTunes library on multiple drives

After searching on the web for threads of people with this issue, I found this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1483694
I wanted to reply, but the thread has been archived and locked, so I figured I could make a new post offering my new solution.
The application I have written to allow users to easily move the media files in their iTunes library to multiple drives is called TuneSpan (http://www.tunespan.com).
TuneSpan is user friendly, freeware, native OS X app. It does the whole process of moving files and having iTunes know the new location for you, just as you would expect from a full featured app for OS X. Symbolic links are used to point iTunes to the new file locations, but in some cases, TuneSpan can actually get iTunes to learn a new location for the file, without the need of a symbolic link. Also, TuneSpan never removes any tracks from iTunes (preserving playlists, play counts, etc.) and there is no need to adjust any settings in iTunes such as the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" setting.
Lots of important information about TuneSpan and how it works can be found on http://www.tunespan.com/help.html
I do not mean to completely self-promote by posting this, but I realize that I am doing so. I am hoping to reach out to users who have had the desire to do this task but have been overwhelmed or hindered by past solutions technicality, inflexibility, etc. I am hoping that making this posting in the location that some may look for a solution will give TuneSpan more exposure, and help more people have their iTunes library the way they want it to be. TuneSpan is freeware, but donation are accepted though not forced nor nagged for. If you choose to donate through my site, I will, of course, be receiving compensation which I would be grateful for, but that is not the intention of this post. If this posting does not meet the guidelines of this forum, I apologize.

Very useful app, thanks! But i've noticed it is still a O.xx beta. Do you intend to go on with it?

  • Itunes seems to be unable to locate original file to play songs. Songs are in the itunes media file and playable direct from file. Preferences/advance file location is correct. Some files are playing and others aren't with no obvious pattern.

Itunes is unable to locate original file when attempting to play music. Songs are in the itunes media file and playable direct from there. Preferences/Advanced file location pointer is correct. Some songs play but most don't. I did move files around a bit in an attempt to share music with another account on same computor, however this did not work so have returned file to original location. Please help, I am way outside my feild in this one. Ta.

I have solved the problem. i think when I moved the media file back out of public to my account, I put it back into the wrong place and ended up with a media file inside a media file, inside another media file!! So I moved it again and fixed!! Now I just need to work out why i can't share with another account user of same computor.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod: File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all contents and settings on the device you want to restore.
When this completes and the Set-Up Assistant starts, choose "Restore from iCloud Backup" and enter your iCloud account and password. You will see the three most recent backups for each of the devices on which you enabled Backup. Choose which backup to restore from.

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

  • Putting backup ITL file back into itunes

I updated the software on my ipod touch forgetting that all my music is on comp at home. I have the backup itl files but can't get them back tino itune...says they can't be played on my ipod which is weird considering they have played on it before. I can't work without music and I have no music at all now on my ipod. Can anyone help!!!!!

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
There is also CopyPod. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • "iTunes Media" file in "Previous iTunes Library" taking up 50Gb of much-needed hard drive space.  Can this be safely deleted?

    Hi everyone,
My 3.5 year old 15" Macbook Pro is running out of hard drive space, so I have been trying to clean out some of the dross.  I recently found that there is a file called "Previous iTunes Library" in my iTunes folder that is taking up approximately 50Gb of space.   I would love to delete this folder and reclaim the space, but I am not sure what it is or where it came from, and I don't want to lose music files accidentally. Can someone tell me (1) what this folder is and (2) if I can safely delete it?
Here is a screenshot of these folders and their sizes:
    Thanks for the help!

    Hello facetious1212,
Take a look at this part of the article named iTunes: What are the iTunes library files? Found here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1660.
Tip: New versions of iTunes sometimes include enhancements to the iTunes library. When you open the new version of iTunes, iTunes upgrades your existing library to the new format and places a copy of the old library in the Previous Libraries folder. If everything goes fine during your upgrade to the latest version of iTunes, you can delete the older iTunes Library files.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • How can i import vlc media file ( avi ) into itunes -?

it does not import through file add folder / file to library though an mpeg 4 movie, mpeg 4 vido file or a gets imported and even a vlc media file ( .mpg ) gets imported.
Is it so that an avi willl not get imported into itunes and i will have to convert it into another format ?

Use MPEG Streamclip to convert it to MPEG-4. This won't work for all AVIs.

  • Import just playlists (not files) back into Itunes

I had to have a new hard disk on my computer. All my music files etc were stored on separate hard drive so I still had it all. I installed itunes on the new hard drive and it imported all my files.
Unfortunately, I had not backed up my playlists. A large number of my files are books that were on CD and imported so the playlist order is really important_ obviously- and the tracks are all mixed up.
How can I get the playlists from my Ipod, which are in the right order?! But I don’t need the actual tracks just the playlist order.

I've tried both. The files won't drag back into iTunes & only the latest podcast is available thru the App Store.

  • Blackberry pearl and curve media file transfer to and from macs

in order to transfer pics and mp3's back and forth from blackberry to the mac, you need to 1st install the latest version of pocket mac with the latest driver update for the macs on the rim website. once installed plug the blackberry via usb and check the blackberry for a message saying to enable mass storage. click yes on the blackberry and the macbook treats it as an external drive. open that drive and you'll see different media type folders and the micro sd card folder if you have one installed. at this point the transfer is simple, all you do is click, drag, and drop. viola! done that easy!!!!

I did everything you wrote below, but the BB never asked if it could be used as a mass storage device. The Mac didn't recognize the BB either. Do I need to have a micro SD card installed in the BB to make this work. Thanks in advance for your help.

  • HOW DO I GET MY SONGS BACK TO ITUNES FROM IPOD?

I recently had an incident with my Macbook which lead me to erase and reinstall Leopard. Obviously everything whats erased including my itunes songs. All of those songs are still on my iPod, so how do i transfer them back into my iTunes? I have the same login info and account. Shouldnt it recognize my iPod and allow me to just drag the songs back in? Help is much needed... thank you to all!

1). Connect your iPod to your new computer. If it is set to sync automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
Alternatively open iTunes first and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices and check the box "Disable automatic syncing for iPhones and iPods" and choose Ok. Then connect your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only give you the option to copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads etc) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here (you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well):

iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    Floola Mac & Windows
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
