Reinstalled Pagemaker 7 won't open documents

In a previous thread I asked about PM7 on Win7 and the recommendation was to not use Win7.  Acting on that suggestion, I switched to an XP Pro machine, reinstalled PM7, and lo and behold, it refuses to open any of the previous documents.  I get the "Cannot open file.  8009.16404" error.
This is a completely fresh installation of PM7 on a new XP Pro SP3 computer.  The file I am trying to open opens fine on the original computer using the exact same install package.  Thinking that it had something to do with the CPU (the new one is a Core2 Duo, the old one is Pentium 4), I installed PM7 on yet another machine (Dell Dimension 2400 with P4), and the same thing happens.  It seems like the PM7 .pmd files from the original computer will not open on any other installation of PM7.
Before I tear out what little hair I have left, I am hoping that someone out there has an idea of the what the @#$% is going on!  Please?
Cheers,
Allan

On a second document when I tried, I got this menu to do a preflight, and that failed because there is no PS printer available(?).
Ideas?
Maybe you need to check the printer used for the PM publication.
You could try adding any PS printer - an Apple Laserwriter pointing at LPT1: should do - the printer doesn't have to be actually present.
If Acrobat is installed that should do.
It's ages since I've used S4SP as nowadays it's all PDF.

  • Latest version of Pages won't open documents created in previous version.

Pages won't open documents created before update.

I got the same issue, here is what it says now: "My document" can’t be opened."
    iOS Mavericks 10.9.2
    Pages 5.1
What I did to get this issue:
    - My file was created a month ago in Pages 5.1
    - Today, I opened the file normally
    - I clicked "duplicate" in order to make a back up from the current version
    - The loading wheel kept running for a few minutes...Maybe my cache memory too busy?
    - so, I "forced to quit" Pages
    - I try to open my doc again in Pages 5.1, now it's a failure!!
    - Then i tried to open on another Macbook with Pages 5.1 = Failure
    - I updated Mavericks latest updates = Failure to open my doc
    - Try to open in pages 4.3 = It says: "You need a newer version of Pages to open this document..."
I need a fix asap, it's terribly important to get my document back

  • Pages won't open documents from iCloud

I have a bunch of documents in icloud.  I can open them on my iPad, but I cannot open them on my MBP.  I get an error message simply saying Pages cannot open the document.  This is a brand new MBP running Mountain Lion.

I've encountered this issue a couple of times with Pages 5.1. You try to open a document you've been previously working on that's saved in iCloud, and almost instantly Pages says it can't open the document.
I logged into iCloud and confirmed the document was there are editable with iCloud Pages beta.
You'll find you can create a new document, save it to iCloud, but be unable to open it. Likewise, you can rename and duplicate documents in iCloud using Pages, but still it won't open anything.
Before you get too carried away signing out of iCloud, or deleting folders and what not as I've seen suggested, restart your computer to see if that fixes the problem.
In my case this worked, and effectively, your computer is signing out of iCloud, then signing back in when you restart.
There could be many reasons aside from the obvious bug in Pages as to why this might occur. Are you signed in on two different user accounts using the same iCloud account, as is frequently the situation with me, as I have a work user and home user on my MBP.
Is your wireless connection a little unreliable. You might be able to browse, but the signal strength might be too low to interact with iCloud reliably.
In any event, the good old "turn it off, then turn it on again" fixed the problem for me. Try that first as it's the least destructive.

  • Numbers won't open documents in Mountain Lion.

I have a Mid 2011 Mac Mini that shipped with Mountain Lion. I installed iWork from the original DVD and ran software updates to get the latest release. The apps launch, but will not open any of my iWork documents. I get the following errors in the  logs:
8/13/12 5:22:44.903 PM Numbers[6566]: Exception opening document: *** -[NSConcreteData initWithContentsOfFile:options:error:]: nil file argument
8/13/12 5:22:44.904 PM Numbers[6566]: Failed to open document, but no unrecoverable error
And I sometimes get the following error on screen "The document "document name" could not be opened." note "document name" is actually the name of the document I am trying to open.
I've uninstalled the application manually, and with AppZapper on 3 seperate occasions, making sure to clear out any preference files, empty the trash and reboot afterwards. Then reinstalled and ran updates after logging back in, but to no-avail. If I try to open the template viewer I get these errors in the log.

Pages and Keynote seem to have the same issue, I can't create new documents or open exitsing ones. I can keep uninstalling and reinstalling, but that doesn't seem to be the correct path. Anyone have any ideas?

I ended up finding a solution on my own. I re-uninstalled the iWork apps, deleting the apps, preferences and library\application support\iWork folder at the root of the Macintosh HD. After a restart, reinstalled the iWork software from my DVD. I then manually downloaded and installed the iWork 9.2 upgrade from Apple, http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1563 , instead of using the App Store software update method. Once completed, I ran permissions repair for good measure, though nothing was repaired. Launched and the apps are working as expected.

  • CS2 Reinstalled - Now Won't Open

Several weeks ago, iMac G5 crashed.  Reinstalled Mac OS (archive and install) and updated all the way back to 10.4.11.  Moved files from Previous System to new System.  Clearly didn't get 'em all moved.  Photoshop CS2 was a  little erratic, but it worked.  (Illustrator CS2 worked fine).
Several days ago, a handful of fonts totally disappeared from Suitcase Fusion, which, until then has been quite reliable.  (Fonts couldn't be found anywhere on computer.)  Suitcase Fusion support recommended reinstalling the application and then recreating Suitcase Fusion's Font Vault.  Successfully completed.
Then Photoshop wouldn't open.  Decided it was time to uninstall CS2 and reinstall it.  Followed Adobe's enclosed pdf of uninstall instructions.  Clearly didn't get me totally installed because the installation DVDs wouldn't allow the reinstall.  Detective work led to removing more obtuse files.  Ah-ha.  Now, CS2 DVDs would allow installation.  Installed successfully.  Ran all upgrades.
Now Photoshop and Illustrator won't open.  (I don't use InDesign or GoLive.  Haven't tried Acrobat.)  Both Photoshop and Illustrator go thru almost all their process of opening and then, just before opening should be complete, they crash.  In the "Report to Apple" window, both reveal almost the same problem:
    PHOTOSHOP
    Exception:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes:      KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0xbf7ffad0
    ILLUSTRATOR
    Exception:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes:      KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS (0x0001) at 0xbf7ffaa0
Suggestions to get me back on track would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Bill

Thanks for the suggestions, but still no luck.
    1) Photoshop failed to open in an alternate user.  Same error message in the "Send to Apple" window.
    2) The machine is maxed out at 2GB RAM.  I've not opened the case in more than 6 months.  "About this Mac" says there's 2GB RAM.
A thought -- should I try to uninstall all of Photoshop and Illustrator again and then reinstall only these two applications?  (Acrobat and InDesign open just fine after the reinstall of a couple of days ago.  I didn't install GoLive b/c I don't use it.)
If yes, can someone point me to better instructions for uninstalling Photoshop and Illustrator than the incomplete information in the "How to Uninstall" on the first disc of the CS2 installation set?  As I wrote earlier, when I use these instructions several days ago, all the applications were grayed-out in the installer b/c components were still scattered about.  Using Spotlight, I searched for every single file that seemed to have something to do w/ the various CS2 applications, deleted those files, and then the installer showed the applications as active.  That's when I executed the reinstall that has only half the applications working.
My continued thanks for any guidance ...
    Bill

  • Reinstalled, now won't open at all!

Posted earlier with a problem of not being able to burn in idvd, going all the way through and failing during multiplexing. Also can not do a disk image. Have redone the plist. Burner works for other files. Do not have other software avaliable to burn with.
Just did a re-install and an update and now iDVD won't open at all.
I am stumped and ready to trash my project and just using this thing for e-mail and internet.... what a waste of money. I have been a staunch supporter of Macs since '94. sure can't recommend a mac to anyone now.

Okay, so we have down loaded the app delete, and deleted and reinstalled, TWICE more now. Still no luck.
idvd will open, I can build a dvd, however now when i press the preview and the virtual dvd comes on the screen, I can only choose whatever is already highlighted and preview, if I try to choose any other item in the menu the program crashes. Still tried to go ahead and burn and/or burn disc image and crashed at end of encoding, multiplexing/burn . No errors come up, just drops out. I have no errors/yellow triangles and anything. This is me completely stumped and bummed!

  • Pages won't open document after "making size smaller"

I've been working on a document in pages 5.1 for several months now, with no issues.  After exporting the file to a PDF, I realized the file size was too big for an email so I tried the "reduce file size" button.  Now the document won't open at all.  Suggestions?

Frankly working with Pages 5 is like a tightrope act over a long drop with broken glass at the bottom.
We get quite a few users here, who've "had no problems", …until they do.
You've tried opening the file from within Pages 5, using the Open dialogue?
If that doesn't open it your file is probably hosed:

  • Pages App on Mac won't open documents created on iPad

My pages app on my mac wouldn't open documents created on my iPad, it said that I needed to down load the newest version which I belive I had.  So I put it in the trash hoping I could re install but now I can't open it at all :-(

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5.2 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.2 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Older versions of Pages 5 can not open files from later versions of Pages 5.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud and opened in a newer version of Pages is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Apple has removed almost 100 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

  • Pages won't open document

We are getting an increased number of users all with files that refuse to open in Pages 5, particularly Pages 5.1.
I have gone over several of them and been unable to correct the problem, only able to open the Document.iwa sub file in the package to look at the mix of text snippets and I presume .xml.
Apple reportedly has also examined these and been unable to rectify them.
To aid some kind of resolution I ask that users who have had the problem post here, detailing the last things they did with the file and whether there is anything particular to the files that may be leading to the problem.
Particularly relevant would be where and how the files were last saved.
Are they being transferred or backed up to iCloud?
Are you using 3rd party syching or backup solutions like DropBox?
Are they being re-edited on iDevices, iWork for iCloud beta or back and forth from Word .doc?
Were there any preceeding warnings or difficulties of any kind with the document?
Or anything else you can think of.
    Thank you,
    Peter

Particularly relevant would be where and how the files were last saved.
All documents were made and stored on iMac, early 2010, Mavericks OS 9.2; Pages 5.1; Numbers 3.1; some documents on  Snow Leopard, then Mountain Lion until November 2013 then Mavericks.
I often have to go to lengths which I don't understand to open Pages 5.1 since the iCloud trial.  I just stumble around and try stuff until I get in.
Are they being transferred or backed up to iCloud?
I tried iCloud hoping to have access from the Android smartphone, particularly contact information when away from the office.  It screwed everything up so bad immediately, especially Mac Mail Ver. 7.2 so that I couldn't receive mail, would hang up frequently, block the shut down process  and would need force quit.  Even force quit commonly would not work and I would have to pull the plug from the wall.  I have disabled iCloud the best I can, sacrificing any potential collaboration in favour of getting the Mac back.  My son-in-law has an up-to-date iPhone and I cannot receive mail from it.
Are you using 3rd party syching or backup solutions like DropBox?
I have DropBox installed but don't use it.  No synching of any type.
Are they being re-edited on iDevices, iWork for iCloud beta or back and forth from Word .doc?
Most everybody that I work with used .docx and I can translate back and forth perfectly between Pages and Word. I don't use any other device or editor.
Were there any preceeding warnings or difficulties of any kind with the document?
It is very common upon opening documents that have not been opened since Mavericks was installed - I don't remember the exact terminology - but  the effect of which means that 'this document was made in an older version of Pages. Do you wish to update it to Pages 5.1?'  I tried for a while to avoid 5.1, preferring 4.3, but have given up and do a lot of head-scratching but make Pages 5.1 do what I need.
I am very satisfied with my internal network and connections through FibreOp.
Thanks for your very great efforts Peter.  Forums can be critical and nasty; I prefer to be positive and complimentary when deserved.  You desrerve it.

  • Pages won't open documents stored in iCloud

After a major crash of my iMac after installing Mavericks, I returned to my MacBook Air running Mountain Lion and installed Pages 9.0 (can't reinstall Mavericks on the iMac due to an extremely slow connection)
    Now the problem:
Pages won't show me my previously saved Pages documents in iCloud under "Open existing files". (Actually, it won't even save new documents on iCloud).
    For info:
"Documents and Date" is checked in iCloud system preferences.
All documents show in Finder under an alias folder I created of the Mobile Documents. But I can't open them.
Even "open with" will give me only Terminal as available app.
The only document that will open was a document created after the upgrade to Mavericks on the iMac...
    Any ideas what is wrong?
    Thank you very much

Apple has created a new unified file format for:
    Pages for iOS 2.0.1
Pages 5 for Mac OSX 10.9
    iWork for iCloud beta
    iCloud
Anything going through iCloud now gets converted to the new format.
Pages 5 only runs on OSX 10.9 and can open Pages '09 files but often damages them. It can not open Pages '08 files.
Pages 5 can export files back to Pages '09 but often with a much simpler format as Pages 5 is missing over 90 features.
Pages for iCloud beta uses the new Pages 5 format but lacks UI and many formatting tools.
Pages '09 can not open Pages 5 files at all.
Far from being a format for all it is a format for very few. It requires specific versions of all the software, running on only compatible hardware and operating systems.
I do recommend you stick with Pages '09 just to get your work done and that you do not update to OSX 10.9 Mavericks. This means not being able to transfer files back and forth via iCloud to your iPad. The best you will be able to do is Export to Word .doc and email that to yourself.
The whole arrangement is a rats nest of things going wrong. You are either stuck with the latest version of Pages with very few features, format that nothing else reads and all the bugs, or you use Pages '09 which works but will have it files screwed up by iCloud and can't swap files with the iPad version.

  • AW 6.2.4 on XPsp2 won't open document

I will also be posting this to the discussion forums on the AWUG site so I'll apologize in advance to those who follow both.
We have AW 6.2.4 loaded on HP and Dell machines with XPproSP2 with all available patches and QT 7 (the one that comes with iTunes whether you want it or not). The machines are imaged and are identical within their respective manufacturers.
    We have multiple bad behaviors:
On one machine, if I login into Windows as Administrator, AW runs fine. If I login with a teacher account set up as a Power User, it runs like a dog - 2 to 5 min to start a blank wp document with no other programs running. I cleared all Recent Items and cache folders from the teacher account AppleWorks Data Folder. I gave ownership of the AppleWorks and QuickTime program directories and full control to the teacher account. I made the teacher account an administrator. I re-installed AW as the teacher account as administrator. I excluded the AppleWorks.exe and all cwk files from the anti-virus software scanning. All to no avail (I checked after each step with several machine shutdowns in the process).
On another machine identical to the previous one, trouble started by not opening an AW document that had worked earlier this year. Then it would not start a new document. We have totally uninstalled AW and QuickTime, deleted all related directories in programs and users folders and re-installed (multiple times), and we still cannot even start a new word processing document.
We used to run AW 6.2.4 on our Win98 machines. For the most part, it was ok but now we have moved to all XP on the Windows platform and it just doesn't play nice with XP. What is weird is that it may or may not work or it may work for a while and then go south, all on identical machines that have been imaged using ZenWorks. When I install AW, either manually or with zen, I disable recent items so that should not be a factor.
Is there some other security setting on another file I should check? Are there preferences to get rid of and where would they be located in XP? We just distributed these machines and they are in fact imaged and the other machines don't seem to have this problem. Could something have been corrupted?
It just bugs me that AW will work for a while and then quit with no apparent reason while the next machine over will keep plugging.

I did see your post on the AWUG forum. There are just a few of us that I'm aware of that follow both forums - Barry, Dale Gillard & Brie Fly are the only ones I can think of off the top of my head. I don't believe that any of them use AppleWorks for Windows.
I do, but it's very limited & definitely not in an adminstrative role. I have never used XP, my Dell at work is due to be "upgraded" to XP Pro on November 7. I don't currently have AppleWorks 6 for Windows installed because it was too much trouble to convince an administrator to install it for me. It was rather "flakey" on Win 95 & Win2K Pro. I keep a personal database of the reviews I do & it was very common to get the "previous record going blank when creating a new record" problem & I never could figure out how to fix it. I also use AppleWorks to do quick "Find & Replace" in text I put in the Lotus database we use at work. But AppleWorks 6 on Windows won't let me tab between fields in the Find/Change box. For awhile I used AW 6 for the database & AW 5 for Find/Change in a word processing document. Now, I just use AppleWorks 5, mostly because I can install it myself, it doesn't require an admin. I do plan on trying AppleWorks 6 after going to XP Pro, partly because AppleWorks 5 may have even more problems.
So, sorry, I can't help. BTW, the latest version of AppleWorks for Windows is 6.2.2 not 6.2.4.

  • Pages 09 on new mac won't open documents correctly

I have recently got a new macbok and using time machine transferred the contents of my old macbook including Pages '09 (I haven't updated to the new version as it seems like it will not be good for me or the documents I have). My pages documents opne with all but the first page missing and the formatting all over the place. Opening a new document I find that even typing a text box is a mess and I can zoom in but not out on the document. Not sure why there are these problem when this is still the same version.
Would really appreciate any help as there is years of work that is now a mess.

It sounds like you do in fact have Pages 5 on your new Mac and it is screwing up your documents.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder and
Pages '09 is in your Applications/iWork folder.

  • Latest version of pages (5.1) won't open documents created on pages (same version).

Just a week ago I worked on my documents with no problem.
Today, I can't open the documents anymore. I keep getting an error message requiring a newer version of pages.
I have removed and re-installed pages - no luck there.
I have only 1 version installed so the documents are not looking for an older version.
This is a new Macbook Pro Retina which is 1 month old.
I need to submit my work today.
    Please help!
    Thanks

    1. You really should read the reviews, basically they warn you off Pages 5.
    2. The whole story about the problems with Pages 5 are posted hundreds if not thousands of times in this forum.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5.01 can not open Pages 5.1 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.
