Reinstalling 9.1 from disk

I need some hand holding here since I don't want to mess anything up. I uninstalled 9.1 6 months ago after not using it for years...(ibook g3 bought in 2002) and now I have to use some software that only runs on 9.1
I want to make sure I don't lose anything or mess any apps up etc. in os 10.3.9. I still have the Classic folder icon in my system preference. I tried to boot up from my original disk 9.1 holding down the C key as instructed but after awhile it bombed and said to turn off extensions by holding down shift key. SO do I restart holding the shift and C key at the same time. Probably a dumb question but hey this old mac works so well, no problems so I never have to do anything so this isn't something I have done before and realized a long time ago...a little knowledge can be dangerous...:-) Thanks so much

Hi, Cathleen -
The disk is white with the big gold 9.
That would identify it as a retail OS 9.1 Install CD, rather than being an original disk that shipped with a machine.
A 500MHz iBook is either an iBook (Dual USB) or an iBook (Late 2001) model. According to Apple KBase Article #HT1835, those models originally shipped with OS 9.1.
However, both models are flagged in that article with note (3) which indicates that a retail OS 9.1 Install CD will not work, and that only the original disk for that OS 9 version will work. This is not unusual - many models were shipped after the release of OS 9.1 but before the release of OS 9.2.1, and have a requirement for OS software that can not be met by a retail disk of the same nominal OS 9 version.
The primary solution would be to use the original Software Install CD for OS 9.1 which came with the machine (do not use the Software Restore CD which came with it). Boot to the CD, then do a Clean Install of OS 9.1 (doing this will not remove anything presently on the hard drive; specifically, it will not affect OSX ).
An alternate solution would be to be to get a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD - any 500MHz iBook model should be able to use that one. Boot to that CD, then do a Clean Install of OS 9.2.1.
Although there are a few commercial sites, such as Hardcore Mac, which offer the retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD, you can get it for much less direct from Apple. That CD is not shown in the Apple Store listings, but can be obtained via a purchase by telephone from Apple's Customer Support -

My laptop crashed.  I need to reinstall photoshop 2004 from disk  to my new windows 8 or 8.1 (can't remember which it is), but my laptop freezes every time I insert the disk.  Can anyone help?

If you will tell me what 2004 means. Photoshop CS or version 8 came out around that time and since activation has been terminated for that version, you are entitled to the CS2 replacement:

  • Reinstalling Element 9 from Disk.

I was having problems with Elements 9 so I uninstalled it.  When I try to reinstall the program by inserting disk 1 the install process does not start.  In looking at the directory for the disk I don't see an autostart or install program.
How do I get the install program started?

    Hi Jim,
There should be a setup.exe file which needs to be run to install the software.

  • How do I upgrade from iLife 08 to iLife 09 after complete OS reinstall but have left disk in another country - Can I do it?

I just had to completely reinstall my OS from the startup disks on my MacBook Pro ... my Time Machine backup had been corrupted, so I started from the original disks etc.
I have now got back to OS Lion and iWork 09 and iLife 08, but have just realised that I do not have the iLife 09 disks with me as I have moved country and must have left them in my old house (in the cellar!!!).  Can i download the iLife 08 to 09 upgrade somewhere?
I also have iMac on which I had pretty much the same S/W configuration before I hit the problem that caused me to completely reinstall the OS etc.  I have a 'family' licence for the iLife 09 - can I use the installation on my iMac to install on my MacBook Pro?
    Thanks

There are numerous supporting files, i.e. themes, etc. that are required for iPhoto (and iDVD) so just copying the applications from the one Mac to the other won't do the trick. You need to install it.
You might try using Migration Assistant to copy your user account from the  iMac to the MBP.  Or, downgrade your iPhoto Library to iPhoto 7 (08) via this tutorial from iPhoto Library Manage: Fat Cat Software - iPhoto Library Manager Help - Downgrading a library to an earlier version of iPhoto. Then when you get the disks you can upgrade again to iPhoto 8 (09).
Otherwise you'll either need to wait till you get those disks (have someone ship them to you) or purchase a copy of the iLIfe 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com or whatever is available where you're currently living.

    Hi Janice,
What version of Mac OS are you using?
Adobe does not recommend migrating the software from one disk to the other.
Please run the setup file for Acrobat and reinstall the software. You might want to delete the existing version of Acrobat installed before reinstalling it.

    Hi;
how can i redownload snow leopard after reinstalling an old version of leopard from disks
I have a mobileme account and an icloud account

If you have Leopard installed, you can't download anything to get to Snow Leopard.
In order to do that you must have a Snow Leopard DVD.

Adobe applications should be installed, not transferred.  If yoiu have the disks then yes, use them.  IF you do not you can download from:

  • I tried to reinstall iCal from Disk and get an error

I deleted info.plist from my iCal package. I had read somewhere that if I deleted that all old files in my iCal would be deleted. But instead what happened is I get an error when I try to start "2008-05-19 15:29:46.693 iCal[9051:10b] No Info.plist file in application bundle or no NSPrincipalClass in the Info.plist file, exiting logout" So then I tried to reinstall iCal from Disk and get the error "The Installer could not validate the contents of the 'iCal' package. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance"

    lizesc,
    Welcome back to Apple Discussions.
I deleted info.plist from my iCal package.
Just for the edification of other users, you should never alter any files inside of an application package.
Drag your current copy of iCal to the trash, and then follow these steps to reinstall iCal:
    1. Insert your Leopard Installation disk into the computer.
    2. The disk will appear on your desktop.
    3. Double click on the "Optional Installs" folder.
    4. Double click on the "Optional Installs.mpkg."
    5. Click on (Continue) in Introduction.
    6. Click on (Continue) in Software License Agreement.
    7. Click on (Agree) to agree to the terms of the software license agreement.
    8. Click on the disclosure arrow ▶ next to Applications.
    9. Select (✓) iCal.
    10. Click (Continue).
    11. After iCal has been reinstalled, download and install the OS X 10.5.2 Combo Update.

  • ARD wont run after reinstall from disk

I am trying to reinstall ARD 3.2 unlimited from disk onto a 10.6.7 macbook. I had been running it on an older macbook.
I have followed the ARD Guide for uninstalling the program through terminal.
Installation from disk was successful but it won't run. I get: "The remote desktop administrator software failed to start due to an unexpected error. The Remote Desktop software may not be installed correctly…" before I even get a chance to enter the serial number.
Where do I go from here?
    Thanks

    Hi
Once you've installed or re-installed ARD Admin/Server 3.2 and if your OS is 10.6.6 or greater you'll find the application won't run. This is because you need to upgrade it to 3.4. You can do this by either using Software Update from the Apple Menu or manually downloading the Update. Once installed ARD Admin/Server should then work normally.
The ARD Admin/Server 3.4 Update can be downloaded from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1352
The Admin/Server Update is not the same as the one for the Client:

  • Wiping hardraive and reinstalling osx from disk

So.. I know there's a few of these threads around, but I can't find one that answers my problem directly...
I've tried to wipe my harddisk and reinstal my os (snow leopard) from the install disk that i got with my macbook pro when i bought it. I manually backed up, started up holnd cmd-R and wiped the harddisk from disk utility. Then tried to run the instal software and when you get to the select a disk to install on screen, i have only one option (my single inbuilt harddrive), however it says that i can't select that hardrive, doesn't offer an explantion why.. Any ideas?
One thought i had was that it might be due to the fact maveric is still on that drive? It's not installed but i can still install from it if i want and i can see it in disk utility, though i don't seem to be able to anything to it there. Do i need to delete it some how before snow leopard will install? If so, how? Obviously i need to be fairly sure that'll work or else i'll end up with no os at all...
Thanks in advance, let me know if i've left out any crutial info..

    http://www.macworld.com/2001/10/bc/howtoimac/
is an article describing the process. It's not that hard, IMHO. If you've never done it before, plan on maybe an hour. A magnetic tipped phillips screwdriver will be the most important tool, as the little buggers can easily fall into the case if you're not careful. And there will be a fairly disconcerting crack when you open the iMac. Just make sure to follow the directions for a slot-loading iMac if that's what you have, the tray loading directions are listed first.

  • I recently reinstalled OSX 10.6.8 on my mac pro, and also reinstalled my data from time machine. However I do not have system dis 2, as a result a lot programms do not work. I tried unsuccessfully disc 2 from another macbook pro with OSX 10.6.8. Any help?

I recently replaced the hard disk on my macbook pro. As I had lost my original system disks that came with my mac, I paid an authorised Apple Reseller to reinstall OX 10.6.8 and also they reinstalled the data from my Time Machine back up. However, I have noticed a lot of functions no longer work. I was told by Apple Reseller that they only installed system disk I (operating system), but not system disk II (programme disk), as they do not have that disk. I was advised to use Disk II from any macbook pro with an OS 10.6.8 or higher..... I tried that but it did not work as mac would not read that disk. Can anyone please help me solve this problem?

Rosetta is an Add-On that has to be selected during the install of OS X. It is not installed by default. IIRC during the initial install sequence you have to select Custom or Customize and then select Rosetta...
Or, it the OP's paid technician missed it the first time, he can mount the OS X install DVD on the desktop, open the Optional Installs folder, double click on the Optional Installs .mpkg, and step through the process until arriving at the "Installation Type." There, the OP can check off Rosetta, iPod Support, Qucktime, Printer Support, more fonts, and a bunch of Applications, including Address Book, iCal, iChat, iTunes, Mail, Dictionaries, Safari, and X11 for installation. Both those installs and whatever is on Disk 2 can be installed without starting from scratch.
And while having the original installer DVD's that came with the Mac is the best way to go, the OP can download the 10.6.8 combo updater and run that. Since it's an all purpose updater, it configures itself for the Mac it's run on so, in a sense, it's customization after the fact. If the combo updater is run before Disk 2 is available, it can be run again afterwards. Indeed, I've found that the combo updater can fix problems which normally would call for a reinstallation of the OS; not always but sometimes.

  • I had my hard drive cleaned and cannot install cs6 master collection from disk.  I am getting error message failed to initialize.  please download adobe advisor support.  I have a pc and am using windows 8

I had my hard drive cleaned and cannot install cs6 master collection from disk.  I am getting error message failed to initialize.  please download adobe advisor support.  I am using a pc and have windows 8.  Please help.

start at the top and work your way down applying applicable fixes until your problem is resolved.
    if cc (win):  https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/creative-cloud-desktop-application-failed.html
    if, your error is:
"Installer failed to initialize. File not found." or "Installer failed to initialize. This could be due to missing files."
first, rename OOBE Folder to OOBE.old.
    to find OOBE:
64 bit win OS: Program Files x86\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE
32 bit win OS: Program Files \Common Files\Adobe\OOBE
    mac os: HD>library>application support>adobe>caps
    mac os: USER>library>application support>adobe>OOB
if that fails or isn't the exact error you see, uninstall, clean (http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cscleanertool.html) and reinstall.
if you're using a dvd to install:
copy the disc contents to a desktop directory and install from that directory.
    if you're using a mac:
    1. Try to Create a new user account in Mac with Administrator Priviledges.
    2. Login to the New user, Navigate to Mac HD> Application> Utilities> Adobe Installer folder, Locate products like Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash, Adobe Air and un-install them
    3. Navigate to User Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.
    4. Navigate to Mac HD> Library> Application Support> Adobe and move Adobe to Trash.
    5. Start the installation again.
if everything applicable above fails, check your installation logs:
