Reinstalling apple's snow leopard server on a mac mini

Hello,
I need to reinstall snow leopard server on the mac mini (the one without the dvd drive), and I bought an external dvd drive. How do I get the mini to recognize the external? I can't seem to get that option.

Plug the drive in and when you power up the mini, hold the c button on the computer keyboard while it boots with the restore disk in the dvd drive. After a minute or two, the computer will start from the dvd.

How do I reinstall Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini Server 2010? I have already attached a Mac Superdrive and tried to download, but the buttons at the bottom of the dialog screen are greyed out.

Not sure where you're getting tangled here or how much you know about OS X Server 10.6, so...
AFAIK, Snow Leopard Server wasm't available as a download, it was a separate DVD distribution.
Unlike more recent versions of OS X Server, the 10.6 server distributions were usually standalone DVD disks, as well.
(There is a slight wrinkle if your Mac needs a newer version of 10.6 than your server distribution; there was a different streaming upgrade process for that. IIRC, the appropriate OS X client version was installed first, then you booted that client version and loaded the DVD and installed OS X Server.)
But if you have a Snow Leopard Server distribution that supports your particular Mac Mini model, then boot the DVD, use Disk Utility from the Utilities menu in the bootable DVD environment, wipe the disk, and then install OS X Server.
You'll need a 10.6 license key, if you don't already have that.

I have a very stable customised Mac mini server running SLS. However the machine has developed a hard drive fault and I wanted to get a new mac mini i5 server and restore my stable SLS configuration - from Time Machine (the server backs up to a NAS drive). However I have been advised that the new mac minis will not install SLS. I have no wish to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Is there an easy way to do this or should I seek to repair by old (previous generation) server hardware?

From what I read it should work with 2011 Macmini's with the latest updates of 10.6.8 and confirmed by other users. However Whenever Apple ships the 2012 version, it probably won't work anymore
Have you considered just replacing the hard drive if it is a hard drive problem?
At this point, I'm just waiting on 2012 Macmini with i7 quad-core and whatever hardware updates it comes with it. It'll replace my older 2009 Macmini Server.

Snow Leopard Server on brand new Mini; Gray screen

I installed Snow Leopard Server on a new Mini. The install went fine. Shut the mini down. Started it up about 24 hours later, and I get to the gray screen and that's it.
I exchanged the mini for a new one. Installed Snow Leopard Server on the new one. Install went fine. Ran updates. Restarted the mini several times with no problem. Shut it down, waited 24 hours, and now it's the gray screen again.
Now what?

I would generally not recommend booting OS X Server natively on an OS X MacBook Pro system or any other portable (because server really wants a static IP for various of its services, and portables tend to wander networks), but it is possible to boot Snow Leopard Server OS X Server 10.6 for certain MacBook Pro systems.
If your MacBook Pro is newer than that list, then 10.6 will not boot on your MacBook Pro directly, but it's possible to install a third-party virtual machine software package onto OS X, and to then load and boot OS X Server 10.6 as a guest within the virtual machine — I'd suspect this is where you're headed here, too. I'd further guess that you've some old PPC PowerPC software around that requires Rosetta for its operations, as OS X Server 10.6 is one of the ways recommended for accessing that old software.
There are commercial and free virtual machines available for various versions of OS X.

Installation of Snow Leopard Server is actively supported by all of the virtualization companies. While it sold originally for $499 from Apple; you can now find it for about $125 or less on eBay.
Installation of Snow Leopard client is not actively supported by any of the virtualization companies (with the sole exception of v4.1 of VMWare Fusion, which is now hard to find for obvious reasons and then can NOT be upgraded or this capability is lost).
These practices by these companies are a part of the common Urban Myth that the Snow Leopard EULA prohibits the virtualization of Snow Leopard in Lion or Mountain Lion.

Trying to install Leopard server on my Mac mini

I'm a registered Apple Select Developer and I'm trying to install Leopard Server on a Mac mini I just picked up the other day. Is there a way to do this using the image or do I have to burn a DVD in order to do the install? The image is over 5GB's so I'd need to get a dual layer disk.

Is this just for a test?
If so you can create 3 partitions, one a bootable volume the second partition a place to restore the Leopard image and the third partition to install the new software you restored on the second partition. You do loose two small volumes temporarily, but you can make them relatively small since these are only used for installation purposes. The details can be found on the developer site under " leopardclient_9a377a_seednote.rtf".
I've done this on older machines with no CD players installed.

Actually You Can. Use any late Macintosh that will run Snow Leopard and either boot from a 10.6.3 universal installer that been intalled on a hard drive (quickest) or boot from the UNIVERSAL OS X 10.6.3 DVD. The new Mac Mini should be connected via FireWire in TARGET MODE to the host Macintosh.
Use disk Uitility to format the Mac Mini Hard Drive and install 10.6.3 on it. When it boots (still in target mode) it will be the boot drive for the host macintosh.
Then install 10.6.8 update and iLife 11 and Applejack (this will fix the install in the end).
Then run software update and carry out all updates that it indicates.
After that shut down and take the Mini off Target Mode and disconnect the firewire cable.
Restart the Mini and run software update again. Note - the cursor may take any number of shapes at this stage but continue on. Certainly you wil be asked to run software update OS X 10.6.8 supplemental which should fix the cursor problem.
Restart and hold dowm <Command><S> until a black screen with white writing appears. Wait for it to scroll down to the end and at the prompt type applejack AUTO restart and then press <Enter>
Applejack will run 5 routines which may take some time and at the finish it will restart.
That should be it!
One codicil. If you read the stuff that Applejack brings up you will see that half the processors are not working. This is no big deal and does not seem to affect the operation at all.
The good news is that SL will run on a new Mac Mini which should satisfy a lot of users who have apps that are not yet Lion Compatible.

Upgrade from snow leopard to mountain lion - mac mini

I would like to upgrade my Mac Mini from snow leopard to maintain lion. The spec says that early 2009 machines are ok but I have bought mine in 2009 and it could have been a 2008 model. Is there a serial number or a utility that I can run to check?

If you have applications that you want to use that aren't compatible, you can retain Snow Leopard and create a new partition to install Mountain Lion on.

The first question is whether or not your Mac Mini has an Intel processor. Do +Apple > About This Mac+ if you need to find out. It will tell you what processor is in your mini. (Snow Leopard can only be installed on Intel based Macs.)

Hi, my parents have an old mac mini and they have bought a new camera to use for Skype, but it won't work on their current OS (Panther or Tiger I think).

Leopard is no longer available at the Apple Store but may be available by calling Apple Phone Sales @ 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753). {Note - this is now very unlikely, but no harm in asking}.

Snow Leopard Server on new Mac Pro

I'm trying to install SL Server on a new Mac Pro (dual quads, Radeon video, 6GB RAM) and half way through the installation I get a screen that looks like analog TV static.
Anybody else seeing this?

Here's what I've done:
1. took machine out of box. (grin)
2. Booted off full 10.6 Volume CD
3. Partitioned drive with new name
4. Did install. Got to the installing xx minutes remaining screen.
5. Worked for 10 minutes then screen blanked.
6. Moved mouse and the screen is pure static. Looks like an old TV not getting a signal.
7. Swapped memory, same result. Added more memory, same result. Swapped all memory with new, same result.
8. Reseated all cards, same result.
9. Installed 10.5.6 from the disc that shipped with the machine.
10. Ran all updates.
11. Placed 10.6 server disc in drive. Launched it from within 10.5.
12. The system rebooted normally.
13. Started the install again, static at the same place.
I'm a bit stuck here. My xserves didn't do this.

Setting up Snow Leopard Server with Address Book, iCal for Small Business

Hello Folks,
I have a small business with 2-3 people and I want to setup Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini. I have everything in place, RAID, Backup drive etc.
What I need is a guide on how to setup the server correctly and how to setup Address Book Server, iCal Server, DNS, etc. I was in IT a long while back but have gone back to my creative roots and sworn off IT but I am in a situation where my IT guy's wife is pregnant so he is busy painting the baby's room, etc.
I was looking at Snow Leopard Server for Dummies and a few other books. Do you guys have any suggestions on resources for me to read or research that would give me very straightforward steps in getting this setup. I am at a point where I can re-install from scratch if needed.
For the ease of those that might respond let's assume I know my way around Mac and general networking as a whole.

First of, I will give you a brief background on me regarding networking as a mac user since 1994. I can setup and network multiple macs without a server in our home and small office. Turning file, print and internet sharing with a regular Mac OS X client version at no problem at all. This would be my first time setting up a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server.
I'm in the same boat as Jakekub but we do not have a static IP from our DSL provider. We just bought a Mac Mini Server for our small office with 3 iMacs and 1 MacBook. We will just use the server for internal usage and to centralized things out and use some of server's features like Address Book, Mail, iCal etc. I've search the forums and found Orhidy's post here:

I even followed the sample IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Server and I think I had it correctly setup initially. And I think I got it all running on the basic setup base on his instructions. So I tried to test my DNS settings via Terminal > hostname then got answer as
servername.companyname.private
And double checking DNS again with a command: sudo changeip - checkhostname and was given an answer of:
Primary address = 192.168.1.192
Current Hostname = servername.companyname.private
DNS Hostname = servername.companyname.private
The names match. There is nothing to change
dirserv:success = "success"
But here's another one that bugs me. I tried to follow from "Mac OS X Snow Leopard for Dummies" the command line:
NSLOOKUP hostname
and got an answer of:
;; Got SERVFAIL reply from 192.168.1.192, trying next server
Server: 192.168.1.1
Address: 192.168.1.1#53
** server can't find hostname: NXDOMAIN
So does it mean that I still haven't configured my server properly?

Lion server or Snow Leopard Server?

From a quick check of postings here, my question of whether to use Lion Server or Snow Leopard server on a Mac Mini for a small office, looks to be "stay away from Lion server" Snow Leopard server just works and is easier to support.
Most of these posts are from 2011, has anything changed where someone can say Lion is now a much better server choice now than considering Snow Leopard Server?
It seems that most posters feel Lion server is a real step backwards, is this the case?

Which services have been removed or depreicated?
You have to bear in mind that 'removed' or 'deprecated' only really means 'no longer bundled and supported by Apple'. Just because Mac OS X Lion Server doesn't ship with a foobar server that doesn't mean you can't download and install your own foobar server. It just won't be integrated into the Server Admin apps.
For example, Lion Server no longer ships MySQL Server. So download and install your own copy. It's not like the GUI apps gave you any control over the MySQL anyway, other than starting it up and controlling the network ports.
Likewise for print server. Some of the advanced print features such as quotas have been removed from the GUI, but you can implement them yourself.
Likewise with QuickTime Streaming Server, where the functionality is little more than a web service.
What features that have been enhanced?
Lion Server has simplified the setup of a server for small workgroups with simple requirements. If that's you then the whole experience may be enhanced since you're not swamped with a slew of options that you don't understand, or need.
I think a lot of people were also stymied by Snow Leopard Server because they expected the GUI apps to cover all the options, which was never the case.
So my original point stands. There is pretty much nothing you cannot do in Lion Server than you could do in Snow Leopard Server, it's just that it might not be supported by the GUI. Most serious server admins eschew Server Admin.app anyway since even Snow Leopard Server's admin app doesn't cover all the capabilities of some of the services, so you end up driving it via the command line anyway.

How to enter hidden SSID in Snow Leopard Server

I am re-installing Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini Server (2009) from the recovery disk. I successfully installed, using Remote Installation. However, it did not keep my network settings. The SSID is hidden, so normally, I would select to enter "other network". But, in this case, that option is not showing up. What am I missing?

Airport was enabled; however, the network name box did not have an option to "Join Other Network". I was very surprised, because I had used Airport to remotely install the OS in the first place, and that box did have the "Join Other Network" option.
I understand that sniffing tools, used by any network-savvy person, can easily find hidden networks. As a matter of fact, most newer network selection software distributed with network card drivers are able to find and display hidden SSIDs. I just like to use the most security I possibly can, and that's one tool at my disposal. Along with WPA2 and a strong key, the hidden SSID keeps my network out of sight and mind of the casual hacker who just wants to see what's out there to pick and poke at. They're most likely to hack at the easily displayed stuff and, hopefully, ignore what they can't see. Again, just one more tool - not the best, but not totally useless, either.
