Reinstalling Classic on OS 10

I have a Power Mac G4 running OS X 10.4.11. I recently had to perform a clean install and in doing so, accidently removed  OS 9 . I need the Classic Environment to run my Painter Application.  I have my start up CD for the OS 9 . Can I simply reinstall the classic environment without messing up the OS 10 or will I then have to do all the upgrades and such that I had to do initially to get to my current OS?

Can I simply reinstall the classic environment without messing up the OS 10....
Yes.
Installing OS 9 (Classic) from your OS 9 Install CD will not affect the installation of OS X.
Best is to do a Clean Install of OS 9 - doing so eliminates the possibility of the OS 9 installer being confused by one of the folders in OS X. The OS 9 installer can view that folder as bsing an unknown version of OS 9, and refuse to run further; a Clean Install prevents that. Note that a Clean Install in OS 9 removes nothing already on the hard drive.
To do a Clean Install using the OS 9 installer, on the installer's page which contains the select destination action, click the Options button. In the new screen select to do a Clean Install.
Note - in that same screen is an option to select to not update the hard disk drivers. It is a good idea to select that option - since you already have OS X on the drive, its drivers have already been updated past what the OS 9 installer can do.

  • Reinstalling Classic under Tiger

    Hello,
My Power Mac G5 (July 2003 brand) came with Jaguar installed on it and with a "grey" DVD, labeled "Software Install and Restore (includes Apple Hardware Tests)" (I'm translating from French, so the actual English title might be different).
Then, I upgraded to Panther and later to Tiger, (doing archive and install installations).
Now, in order to tidy things up a little, I've done a clean install of Tiger on a separate disk, and I'd like to do a clean install of Classic as well.
THIS topic at Apple support says that I should insert the "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc that came with my computer, double-click "Install Additional Software, and follow the onscreen instructions.
That’s what I've done with the "gray" DVD I mentioned above: a utility called "Software restoration" (again, as translated from French) has been installed and has been automatically launched, asking me to insert again that grey DVD -it even displayed a picture of the DVD label. However, it looks like the DVD was not recognized as the right one, so nothing happened and the only button displayed was "Quit". I've repeated the same steps several times with no success.
I’m sure doing something wrong, but what ?
    Thanks for any help

    Thanks to both of you.
    BDAqua was perfectly right:
I ran again Software Restore, but this time under Panther instead of Tiger, and O Miracolo the DVD was accepted and all the restoring options displayed neatly aligned, as well as the Continue button.
Actually, Software Restore looks like it is not compatible with Tiger. Note also that the grey DVD in question was shipped with Jaguar (and has Jaguar on it), not Panther.
Anyway, I'm going to upgrade to Leopard, but I'll keep Tiger at hand for Classic. Since I'm also going to abandon Panther -RIP , I won't be able to run Software Restore anymore. So, I'll follow BDAqua advice by saving a fresh, clean copy of Classic that I could copy back to my Tiger partition in case I need to reinstall it.

  • Reinstalling Classic on G5

I have a 1.6 G5 that after I installed Tiger the Classic folder was missing. I restalled from Software reinstall disk 2 that came with the G5, after installation there still is no Classic folder. I have tried many times, what gives? is there another way to install Systen 92.2?

Thats what I am using but it does not install, it says it does but the software and printer I want to use still do not work and when I click on Classic in the system preferences I get a message no Classic folder installed.

  • Reinstalling Classic on PowerBook G4 running Tiger

I use my old powerbook G4 15" 1.5Ghz to run important business software that only runs in Classic.  My hard drive died however (flashing folder with ?mark).  All attempts to revive the old hard drive failed, so I bought a new internal hard drive and installed it myself.  I found three old OS disks lying around (OS9, OS 10.1.3 and OS 10.4 tiger).  I chose to install Tiger and all is well, except I don't have access to Classic, which was the whole point.  I wish I knew if either of these three disks was the original system software for this particular Mac, but I can't remember.  Seem like if I use the original disk, it would include Classic with it's install.
Basic question is: How do I get Classic running again on this PowerBook?  I do have an old G4 Titanium that still runs.  Can I pull an OS9 system folder off of that?  Can I use my OS9 disk somehow?
Any help is greatly appreciated.  I'm not a computer whiz, so explain in layman's terms please.

I have classic on a 2004 iBook with Mac OS X 10.4.11. I had a clone of an older Pismo Powerbook that had both OSX and OS 9.2.2 partitions. All I needed was to copy the System folder from the 9.2.2 clone to the iBook and everything worked well.
I found this post from Charles Dyer which may help with sorting out the different disks.
If you have a PowerPC Mac, you can install Classic several ways. The easiest is to use the system discs which shipped with your Mac. Older PPC Macs shipped with a separate OS 9 CD; boot from that CD and run the Installer. Newer PPC Macs shipped with two or more CDs or a DVD; if you have two CDs or more, on one of the CDs, usually CD 2, there will be an icon named something like 'Additional Software & Classic'. If you have the DVD, there'll be a similar icon there. Double-click that icon, and install Classic.

  • Reinstalling Classic

I've had a look at the posts on this topic but seem to be missing something.
I upgraded from Panther to Tiger a few months ago. I had been using Classic occasionally (to check the Mac OED which only runs on OS9), this time I tried to launch Classic which just hangs after the first ten seconds or so.
Am I right in thinking that I neglected to install Classic when I upgraded from 10.3 to 10.4? I booted from the Tiger DVD hoping that I could install Classic "after the fact" but couldn't see an easy way of doing this without doing a complete Erase and Install. Needless to say, I'd like to avoid this - but can I re-install Classic without a complete re-install?

I have a different question about Classic. I am updating my eMac from 10.3.9 Panther to Tiger 10.4.3 (and eventually to 10.6 with the combo update) in a few days. I have never used the "Classic" program and am wondering whether I even need to keep it on the hard drive. Should/could I just delete the program to free up space on the hard drive? Would that cause problems with the Tiger install?

  • Reinstalling Classic  with 10.2.3- help

I did an erase & install and now there's no trace of my Classic system folder anywhere. Only 1 disk came with my computer originally and no signs of OS9. (I have a iMac G4 flat-panel running 10.2.3. I also found out that because of the timeframe the computer was made in I cannot boot up in 9 - it only boots in OSX and then when i need classic it will start up) Which is why I was confused that all my classic stuff got wiped out when it automatically came with the computer - not on a disk. So my question is - Do I have to buy a OS9install disk? If so - is there a specific version I should be looking for? Some disks I see on ebay have a big 9 on them and some are grey but the seller claims they are version 9. Any advice? Thanks!

    Denise:
If you backed up your HDD before you did the Erase and Install you can copy the OS 9 System Folder and Applications Folder from the backup. Simply drag it onto your newly formatted and updated drive. That is supposing you backed up before your last procedure.
If not, you can buy a version compatible disk from eBay and install then do the updates.
    Good luck,

  • How to reinstall safari browser in my emac power G4 running classic?

how to fix my start-up not open classic and how to reinstall safari browser?

There is no Classic version of Safari.   The earliest version of Safari came out in 2003 and could run on Mac OS X 10.2.   In order to run Safari and Mac OS 9 side by side, you need Mac OS X 10.4.11 or earlier installed to have Classic.
Mac OS X 10.3 was the first to include Safari prebundled.
Your 10.4 installer discs include Safari, which you can extract with http://www.charlessoft.com/ Pacifist.
Your eMac installer discs include the restore application to reinstall Classic environment:

  • Tiger's lack of Classic

I recently replaced a damaged hard drive with a new one direct from Apple. I was running OS 10.4.8 before the accident and easily used the Classic mode when running several odler programs I own.
Now that I have a new harddrive, OS X 4.8 tells me I no longer have Classic to use my programs. I assume this is because I have a new harddrive and did not backup my older operating systems when I replaced it (I backed up important media and other third-party programs).
Is there a download for Classic to run in OS X 4.8? I haven't found one. Is there something else I can do? I have my startups for OS X.2 from my original purchase of my powerbook.

    Hi Benjamin,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
You can reinstall Classic from the disks that originally shipped with your computer. Depending on the exact version there are different procedures for the reinstall:
Using Apple Software Restore to install or reinstall parts without erasing (Mac OS X 10.1.5 or earlier)
Using Restore Discs with Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.3
Mac OS X 10.4: Restoring applications from a Mac OS X 10.2 Software Restore disc

  • How to install Classic on 800MHz SD eMac w/10.4 w/o wiping entire drive??

I've been trying to help out a friend who bought an 800MHz eMac (SuperDrive) used on Craigslist. Machine is in great condition and came with Tiger installed and working fine. She has since installed many of her own OS X apps, but finds she needs to run a few legacy apps and needs Classic installed.
She has a 4-CD set of eMac Software Restore discs, which contain OS 10.1.4 plus OS 9.2.2. These are not standalone installers, however. After mounting Disc 1, she is able to reboot from that CD (into an OS 9 interface), but is only presented with a single option, and that is to erase the hard disk and do a complete restore of the original OSes and apps that shipped with the computer. Since she has spent weeks installing apps and configuring the computer just as she wants it, she does not want to have to wipe the entire drive just to be able to add Classic at this point.
I can think of two alternatives, neither of which will work for her because she does not have access to an external firewire drive, either with or without a bootable system on it. My two methods would be to either:
    A. Boot from an external FW drive in target disk mode and then use a standalone OS 9 installer (which she does have) to get Classic on the eMac;
    B. Clone the entire hard drive to an external drive and then run the 4 eMac Software Restore discs, update to the latest version of Tiger, and then add back all her additional installed apps and utilities, etc.
    1) Am I correct in assuming that method A would, in fact, work?
More importantly, though, can anyone suggest a simpler way to install OS 9 on this machine which would not involve using an external drive? It's so frustrating that the Software Restore disc is bootable (whereas the standalone OS 9 installer disc is not!)...yet there is no apparent way to access just the OS 9 installer on these Restore discs and to run just that installer and not have to reformat the entire drive.
    2) Any bright ideas on a relatively simple workaround would be greatly appreciated!
Additionally, it is unknown whether or not OS 9 drivers have been installed on this eMac. I assume, though, that if they had not been installed, then an OS 9 installation would balk and not go through. It would be worth taking that chance, though, as the worst that could happen is that OS 9 would not install. Then there would be no other option but to do a full erase and install from the Restore Discs.
    3) Is there any way of ascertaining in advance whether or not OS 9 drivers have been installed?
Thanks in advance for any help!
    PowerMac G4/867   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Your initial post notes that OS X 10.4 is installed but 10.1.4 is on the actual restore discs that you have. My recollection is that Apple switched from 10.1.4 to 10.2 late in the production run of the 700 MHz model eMac (specificaly, they upgraded two weeks after I bought my 700 MHz eMac), so a 800 MHz model should have shipped with OS X 10.2, not 10.1.4. There are significant differences in the Restore disc sets between the different OS X versions. In any case it's clear that the discs you have do not include a retail Tiger install disc. You'll eventually want to pick up the retail black-lable Tiger 10.4 Install DVD in case it's ever necessary to reinstall the OS (if the eMac is one that doesn't have a DVD-ROM or DVD-RW drive, the Tiger DVD can still be exchanged for a set of CDs for a nominal fee).
From your later posts, it appears that you do have a separate OS 9 install CD but that the emac won't boot from that OS 9 disc. It rather sounds as if the disc set you have is actually from an earlier 700 MHz eMac model. Open System Profiler and check the video hardware; if it shows ATI graphics rather than nVidia graphics, you definitely have the wrong set of discs. While there's no online link for this, you can call the Apple Store and ask about purchasing a replacement set of discs for the Mac model you actually have (have the info from eMac: How to locate the serial number and identify your model handy if you call).
The OS 9 installation method you need depends on the set of restore disks and the original OS X version that was provided with those discs. Since you have 10.4 installed on a 800 MHz eMac, you'd nominally start with Mac OS X 10.4: Restoring applications from a Mac OS X 10.2 Software Restore disc rather than the older Using Restore Discs with Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.3. Unfortunately, reinstalling Classic following that guide does invovlve erasing the HD, which you want to avoid.
Given the discs you do have is for 10.1.4, you can check the later part of Using Apple Software Restore to install or reinstall parts without erasing (Mac OS X 10.1.5 or earlier) for the steps on how to install parts without erasing. However, if I'm picturing the correct set of Restore discs that you have in hand (there have been enogh different sets of resstore and install discs to make that a royally confusing morass), OS 9 is not on the Restore disc set in versions prior to OS X 10.2; rather, there should be a separate OS 9 Install CD in the set of discs that came with OS X 10.1.4 Macs.
Under the circumstances, unless you acquire the correct Restore discs for that model eMac, your best chance of getting Classic installed would on first thought be to take up Chopsuey's suggestion about dragging the OS 9 System Folder from the OS 9 Install CD onto the eMac's HD, then try to use that to get a hobbled form of Classic open well enough to use Tome Viewer to extract the full OS 9 System onto the HD. Although the OS 9 CD you have from a OS X 10.1.4 disc set would be for an nVidia graphics eMac and your appears to be an ATI model, the actual graphics hardware is driven by OS X, so having the wrong graphics drivers in OS 9 may or may not actually limit Classsic to running in a 640x480 pixel window.
I'm pretty sure you'd find it easier to call the Apple Store for the correct set of Restore discs for that model.
Installing the OS 9 drivers on the hard drive is required to boot the nVidia graphic model eMacs into OS 9 from the HD but is not required to use the OS 9 System Folder to run Classic. Later ATI graphics eMacs won't boot into OS 9 regardless of whether or not the drivers are installed on the hard drive. Either way, if you only want to run Classic, you don't need to reformat the drive to install the OS 9 drivers (nor search for the Terminal hack to put OS 9 drivers onto an already-formatted HD).

  • Classic stalls- due to corrupt extensions?

My Classic environment stalls during start up.
I originally followed the advice in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106835
    to no avail.
I had also tried to start up with extensions off, which works, but leaves me without extensions. You may view my previous post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=499926&tstart=0
I have since gone through the entire extensions folder and tried each one by one (starting up Classic after each addition) and found 18 extension files to seemingly be corrupt. I've placed these in the disabled extensions folder and Classic starts up without stalling.
However, I can't open any applications.
When I try to open a classic application it bounces in the dock, stops bouncing and does not go away, the triangle underneath does not appear, the application does not appear, and it won't respond to quit commands.
Also, when I try to open a Classic application without first separately starting up Classic, the Classic start up will stall.
I've tried reinstalling Classic with the Software Install and Restore disk, and repaired disk permissions. After doing this I attempted to reinstall/restore software (photoshop 6) from its disk and the installer application, a Classic application, wouldn't open.
I can't imagine what else could be effecting the start up. If there's anything else I can do, or redo I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions.
    Thank you.

Hi, Cabbitsu. I suggest starting up from your Panther installer disk 1, opening Disk Utility from the Installer menu, and running DU's "Repair Disk" routine repeatedly until it reports twice in a row that your disk "appears OK". Then perform another new installation of Classic — a Clean Install if that option is available to you — and test again.
I can't assure you that this will be the solution to your problems, but it is likely that they stem from some corruption of your hard drive directory, and this procedure will reveal and probably repair such corruption.
If DU's "Repair Disk" routine never gives your drive a clean bill of health without reporting that it had to fix something, you will need a stronger disk utility such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to make the necessary directory repairs.

  • Classic problems

I haven't tried to use Classic for ages but today I downloaded some demo software that will only run in Classic and when I tried to launch it I got a message saying that the application couldn't find a printer and telling me to use the Chooser to select a printer and start again. Apart from the fact that this seems to be a nonsensical message when trying to launch an application I couldn't get to the Apple drop down menu to get to Chooser anyway. In addition, instead of getting the '9' icon in my dock when starting Classic I got 'hpinkjet engine'. I've tried reinstalling Classic from my computer's CD Rom but still have the same problem!!!
Does anyone have any ideas what is going on??
    Thanks
    Vivien

Hi - Thanks for both those suggestions. The original problem with the downloaded software was, as you thought, in fact a quirk in the software which the developer explained how to get round. Trying to sort the second problem has proved more tricky. It took 25 minutes of holding down the C key during restart to get my computer to boot from my Panther CD and even then I couldn't get it to give me DU - just never ending spinning beach ball!!! Did manage to get it to boot from DiskWarrior CD though and did a rebuild from that - but it hasn't fixed the problem of getting 'hpinkjet engine' in the dock when I launch Classic instead of 9 icon. Do you think I have a major HD problem or just a faulty Panther CD?

  • Starting Classic while running OS 10.4.11

I can no longer start up classic while OS 10.4.11 is running. If I go to system pref. I can choose 9.1 as start up and OS 10.4.11 will close and 9.1 will open but this proves to be a pain. I reinstalled classic and now have two system folders (one labeled previous system folder), I rebuilt the desktop but still no success. Ideas anyone!

    Hi, erifon -
If you mean that you can choose to boot to either OS 9.1 or OSX 10.4.11, but the install of OS 9.1 will not function as Classic while the machine is booted to OSX...
The fact that the machine will boot to that OS 9.1 means that it is a valid install for that machine.
It has been reported by some users that although the general requirements for Classic calls for an install of OS 9.1 or later, OSX 10.4.x may have problems using versions earlier than OS 9.2.x.
Suggest you try updating the OS 9 install to OS 9.2.1, and even to OS 9.2.2. You can do that via download updaters. Note - the installers for these updaters will work only when the machine is booted to OS 9; and, if you want to install the OS 9.2.2 update you must first install the OS 9.2.1 update.
Article #120030 - Mac OS 9.2.1 - Download and Info
Article #75186 - Mac OS 9.2.2 - Download and Info
Important - be sure to download the correct language version of the updater(s). Unlike OSX, OS 9 installs are single-language. If the update does not match the language version of the installed OS 9, the updater will refuse to install.

  • Classic or mac OS 9.0

Hi, i have got a G4 iBook, which is run by 10.4 OSX tiger
I reacently tried to install an old game: Starcraft, but i couldn't.

"Classic cannot find a useable Mac OS 9-systemfolder on the startdisk
You may have to install Mac OS 9.1 or a newer version (classic-supported) on the computer"
    So my question is now:
    - How do i get this Mac OS 9?
    - How to install it, so that i will normally use Mac OSX, but still be able to switch and play my game?

  • Classic just stopped working?!

Hey guys, i mainly only use os 9 classic for my canon scanner & recently classic has just stopped working. whenever i try to start it, it just sits there in the loading screen, ive left it for a long time & nada. also the other ***** is that canon hasnt made any os x software for this particular scanner, just drivers. ive tried reinstalling that driver & of course hasnt made a difference
any ideas of what to do? is there a way of reinstalling classic? would that solve it?
    thanks ahead of time

thanks again charles. i tried to repair the disk, but
everytime i would verify the disk it would find a
problem (it wouldnt tell me what), but it wouldnt
allow me to repair, it was fogged. i tried restarting
with the install disk & still couldnt find anything.
This sounds as though you have a serious directory problem. If you don't have Disk Warrior, or if DW can't fix the problem, then I'd back everything up. If necessary, buy an external hard drive and get hold of Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper!. Either CCC or SD! will make a complete backup of your system to another volume.
Once you've made the backup, reformat the original volume and restore the backup to it.
so i checked on the apple help site for fixing
classic & all i did to fix classic was reselecting
the system i wanted to start up my computer in the
startup disk menu in system pref. now it works,
    messed up.
    'Messed up', how?
also i ended up calling apple on getting my computer
to repair my disc & the woman on there told me that
software isnt included in the one year warranty, ***?
Apple has never included software in their one year warranty.
how is hardware which costs money to replace is
covered, but software isnt? it doesnt cost anything &
they should be just as resposible for software as
they are hardware. sorry for the little rant, its
    just crazyness
    No-body warrants software.
    so thanks again charles
    no problem.
