Reinstalling Classic under Tiger

Hello,
My Power Mac G5 (July 2003 brand) came with Jaguar installed on it and with a "grey" DVD, labeled "Software Install and Restore (includes Apple Hardware Tests)" (I'm translating from French, so the actual English title might be different).
Then, I upgraded to Panther and later to Tiger, (doing archive and install installations).
Now, in order to tidy things up a little, I've done a clean install of Tiger on a separate disk, and I'd like to do a clean install of Classic as well.
THIS topic at Apple support says that I should insert the "Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test" disc that came with my computer, double-click "Install Additional Software, and follow the onscreen instructions.
That’s what I've done with the "gray" DVD I mentioned above: a utility called "Software restoration" (again, as translated from French) has been installed and has been automatically launched, asking me to insert again that grey DVD -it even displayed a picture of the DVD label. However, it looks like the DVD was not recognized as the right one, so nothing happened and the only button displayed was "Quit". I've repeated the same steps several times with no success.
I’m sure doing something wrong, but what ?
Thanks for any help

Thanks to both of you.
BDAqua was perfectly right:
I ran again Software Restore, but this time under Panther instead of Tiger, and O Miracolo the DVD was accepted and all the restoring options displayed neatly aligned, as well as the Continue button.
Actually, Software Restore looks like it is not compatible with Tiger. Note also that the grey DVD in question was shipped with Jaguar (and has Jaguar on it), not Panther.
Anyway, I'm going to upgrade to Leopard, but I'll keep Tiger at hand for Classic. Since I'm also going to abandon Panther -RIP , I won't be able to run Software Restore anymore. So, I'll follow BDAqua advice by saving a fresh, clean copy of Classic that I could copy back to my Tiger partition in case I need to reinstall it.

  • Installing Classic under Tiger.

I need to run System 9.2 under Tiger.  I bought an iMac G5 on eBay which was running OS X 10.3.  I bought a retail pack of OS X 10.4 (black disc) on eBay but it doesn't come with the System 9.2 stuff.  How can I set it up to run Classic?  I have a grey disc from my old (defunct) G5 but it won't install on my new (old!) machine.

You said you have been running this on an older machine, so you must have had a Classic environment on the old machine.  So you must have had a "System Folder" on that machine in order to run the OS 9 version of HyperCard, right?
From the emergency backup drive that you must have made of the old machine at some point in the past 7 or 8 years, copy the "System Folder" from that to your new machine, and under System Preferences for Classic select the newly copied System Folder.  If the old machine has "given up the ghost" and won't run anymore, you may be able to remove the old hard drive, if that still works, and copy the System Folder from there using an enclosure or bare-drive cable adapter to an external port FW/USB on the new machine.
The problem with running on a late model G4 or G5 that can not boot OS 9 itself, is that you can not boot and run any OS 9 installer on that machine.  Some of the computer models in that transition period that shipped with Classic pre-installed also came with /Applications/Utilities/Software Restore OS X application on the original OS DVD that would re-install the OS 9 software from the original media DVDs/CDs (at least that's how my G4 MDD worked).  Retail versions of OS X do not include the Classic environment or this software restore .app.  I don't know if the G5 iMacs shipped with a Classic environment, I'm not familiar with them, do you know how you got it on there in the first place?  Was it pre-installed?

When typing in Dreamweaver 1 etc, running under Classic I frequently get multiple letters typed in the document - llllllike tttthisss!
    Any one know why?

Thanks. I had not noticed that before - I suppose because I have had no problems under Tiger.
    Certainly sounds like the solution.

  • OS 9 won't start under Tiger

    Hi,
My Classic environment will no longer start under Tiger, although I can boot from it independently. I suspect my recent maintenance activities may be to blame. I have three internal drives, all with Tiger and one also with OS 9.2. Recently the boot disc showed signs of failing: I caught it in time, imaged the disc and replaced it. After a bit of fiddling with the remade disc I could start from it. Unfortunately I can't recall whether OS9 has ever worked since, but I think it has. I don't use it often.
I have tried booting under Tiger with extensions off and also moving and replacing the Finder so that it is 'blessed', both without success. I thought about reinstalling but I get a message saying I can't install over a newer OS.
    All help gratefully received!

  • How to uninstall OS 9 without deleting Classic running Tiger?

OS 9 has become unusable, but it works fine in Classic Mode. I tried doing a reinstall and doing a clean install. I thought it would remove the old OS 9 and reinstall a new version. Instead it created a preveous folder of OS 9 and reinstalled another corupted version of OS 9! How do I uninstall OS 9 without deleting Classic running Tiger? Then I want to do another fresh install of OS 9. How is this done?

    Hi, basicaly tou can't.

  • Need help installing mac os 9.1 for classic on tiger

    hi,
i first bought a official copy of os 9.0 then tiger said you need 9.1 so i bought 9.1 and when i hold c at startup no go...so i try booting up in system preferences no go. then when i double click install it says it already had 9.1 installed and i should have 9.2???? but there is nothing in the classic folder.
also i tried dragging and dropping the sytem folder and utilities from the os9.1 cd into the classic folder and then the computer startsup with a question mark over folder and refuses to boot up. so i had to reinstall tiger. help i want classic.
this is a titanium poerbook with the option of os9 startup

    Hi Benjamin,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
There is no need to buy OS 9 retail disks - and depending on what generation PowerBook you have you won't even be able to use them (Macintosh: Some Computers Only Start Up in Mac OS X).
You can reinstall OS 9 (Classic) from the software install&restore disks that originally shipped with your computer: Click on "Support" on top of this page, then type "reinstall classic" into the search field. From the results select the version of your original disks for detailed instructions how to resinstall OS 9.
BTW: No need to buy 9.1 or 9.2 disks. They are free updates and available here: Mac OS 9: Available Updates

  • Why does Airtunes Drop Frequnetly under Tiger?

After having sifted through the last week's worth of posts to this forum, I find that I'm having a problem that many others are also having, and that it has yet to be solved. I'm posting yet another thread on this topic, hoping that Apple will take notice.
Since upgrading to Tiger, I've had a bad experience with Airtunes frequently dropping out. Sometimes it resumes playing after a few seconds, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes disconnecting from my wireless network and then reconnecting fixes the problem, sometimes it doesn't. As far as I know, everything is up to date:
    Mac OS X 10.4.7
    iTunes 6.0.5 (20)
Apple Base Station v6.3 (that's the firmware)
Software update gives me weekly updates too, so my Airport software should be current (how does one find the version number for this?). This problem also ocured under firmware 6.1. A hard reset of the Airport Express did not fix the problem either.
The strangest symptom that I experience is when Airtunes drops out and I try to deselect my speakers in iTunes. It just hangs and I get the dreaded spinning beach ball. After 2 or 3 minutes it finally deselects. Sometimes if I reselect the speakers, Airtunes resumes working. But other times it just seems dead.
While all of this is going on, my internet connection through the APExpress is still ok.
Airtunes worked flawlessly for me under Panther. So I'm fairly sure that the problem arose when I switched to Tiger.
Anyone know how to solve this problem (other than downgrading to Panther)?

Okay, I've read the posts in this thread and think I might be able to contribute.
My set up is an Airport Extreme Base, with two Express's. I'm new to all this WiFi stuff, and have built this system adding each component over the past two years. So, frequent droping out has also been a problem with my setup. Yet (fingers crossed) i think I got things working pretty well with, ahem, (almost) no drop outs in days.
    1. First suggestion is this link.
    http://www.macgeekery.com/hacks/hardware/optimizingairportconnectivity
It basically talks about channel switching the Extreme Base Station and how to find out who else might be using that channel. With hints for advanced software from Apple (and where to get it) that I did not have, that helped me monitor signal strength and other neet learning tools.
    2. I purchased airfoil recently (great software IMHO), and in the troubleshootong section it talked about how any 802.11b hardware (like my 867 Tibook) automatically down throtles your network from a potential 54 mbps to 11mbps. Now I'm not real versed on what sort of thru put you need to stream this music stuff, but 11mbps probably is not enough for two consecutive streams (w/o constantly dropping out). I have not heard of this potential problem disscussed ANYWHERE else.
    3. One of my signals has to travel down a long hallway to reach the Express & speakers, 50 feet, and the signal would always stop when (it seemed as though) I would walk down it. My body seemingly disrupting the signal.
This has seemed to dimminish after my last (#4)suggestion. A house full of people would (i think) kill any signal(s) no matter how strong the signals are.
    4. Upon messing around with the settings in the Airport Administrator Utility,
i accidentally had it set to 25% of its potential Transmitter power (under Airport-->Airport Network -->Wireless Options. That fixed alot, boy I felt stupid.
So, these may be things worth looking into. In addition, I have a couple of ?'s.
    1. what is the multicast rate? it's under Airport-->Airport Network -->Wireless Options also. what do ya'all have it set at?
    2. Would WDS have a positive signal strength effect with an Extreme Base Station and 2 or more Express stations.
I have never run any WiFi under panther, but have had constant drop out issues under tiger until recently (who knows, maybe they'll return)
    Goodluck all !!!!

  • Running a Mac OS 9  (Classic)  on Tiger OS

    Hi Guys
i have a software disk that when i insert it tells me that i need to run on Mac OS 9 (Classic). but i am running Mac OS 10.4.6 on my Power Book G4.
This is the final Error i keep getting:
You do not have a version of Mac OS 9 installed that supports Classic. Install Mac OS 9.1 or later (Classic Support).
For more information about installing this support, click the Help button.
i have hit the help button and did not come up with any helpful things,
does anyone know how i can install the OS 9 (Classic) or where i can get it from?
    Thanks

    Hi macingaround,
you can install Classic from the install disks that shipped with your computer. Depending on the original system version the procedure might be slightly different. Click on "Support" on top of this page and then enter "reinstall classic" into the search-field. From the results select the version that fits your original install disks for detailed instructions.

  • Why when I'm trying to reinstall my OS, Tiger 10.4, at 56% at files writing, it shuts off?

    Please someone, help me,
Why when I'm trying to reinstall my OS, Tiger 10.4, at 56% of the installation, at files writing, it keeps on shutting off?

Does it feel extra hot on top?
Are you reinstalling because you had several problems? If so what were they?
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • Will latest mac mini boot under Tiger?

I have an older G4 tower set up for use as a graphic arts workstation. As far as the software set-up (both OS (Tiger) and applications (CS2)) goes, it's perfect for what I use it for and I've worked out all the bugs. The computer itself it's getting a little long in the tooth, however, and I'd like to replace that. I'm looking at the latest Mac mini. The ideal solution would be to simply clone the internal start-up drive to an external drive, then restore the clone onto the mini. The latest Mac mini comes (obviously) with Snow Leopard. Does anyone know if it requires Snow Leopard or whether it's possible to boot it with Tiger ?

Not sure how to "quote" into grey boxes but as far as this goes...
Place a > before the text you want to quote.
My MacBook Pro has an Intel processor and runs Tiger.
That Tiger OS is designed for Intel Macs. Tiger installs are PowerPC only unless created from the disks which shipped with an Intel Mac, in which case it will only install onto that specific Mac model, or the Mac OS X Server 10.4 Universal Binary.
If I reformat Mac mini's hard drive it wouldn't have any OS installed. I have unkeyed Tiger disks, so should then be able to install Tiger on reformatted mini drive, correct?
    No.
is there anything in the hardware architecture of the latest Mac mini which will prevent it from booting under Tiger?
Yes. Pretty much the entire architecture prevents it. Give up.

  • IPhone development under Tiger (10.4.x)?

    Hi,
I would like to start developing iPhone applications and just had a look which tools are provided by Apple for iPhone development. Meanwhile I have received the impression that all tools require running 10.5.x. Am I right, or are there also tools available which could be used together with Tiger?
    Thanks,

Thanks for your help KT. Of course I have read the technical requirement you are refering to, but I was not sure if there have been a previous release of the SDK which is running under Tiger.

  • FCP 4 under Tiger?

I posted a comprehensive list of old apps I need to run in the Tiger forum, but nobody there seems to know the answer. I'm going to the individual forums instead.
I have Final Cut Pro 4 -- will I screw myself if I upgrade to Tiger? I already have a retail 10.4 someone gave me, and I'm tempted to use it since my iMac G4 and iBook G4 (both 800MHz, 768MB and 1.125GB RAM respectively) are probably the only Tiger-capable PowerPC Macs I'll ever own. Since I've never been able to get Compressor to work ("unable to connect to background process"), I've been relying on QT Export. Unless Compress will actually work under Tiger, I'm screwed under QT 7 since there's no more QT Export... right?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Some people run FCP 4 and 4.5 OK in Tiger ... but others do have problems. It isn't Tiger so much but QT 7 that seems to cause much of the issues. FCP 4 and 4.5 run best with OS 10.3.9 and QT 6.5.2.
Yes, the OS and QT upgrade will eliminate the MPEG-2 export option in QT. But Compressor should work for you.

  • 7.2.1 - AirDisk won't spin down under Tiger?

It seems that when the airdisk is mounted under my Tiger machine using AEBSn firmware 7.2.1, it does not spin down. However, when I unmount it, it eventually spins down. On my Leopard machine, even with it still mounted, it eventually spins down.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Just confirmed again. My leopard macbook with the airdisk mounted will still allow it to spin down. however, with my tiger machine mounting the airdisk, it NEVER spins down, even when i'm away from the computer, unless i unmount it in tiger.
is this a known issue in 7.2.1 when drives are mounted under tiger? if so, i'll try 7.1.1 again. thanks.

  • 8800GT under Tiger

I wonder if anyone would make the 8800GT accessible under Tiger by transplanting Leopard's nVidia drivers into Tiger...

Oh, great, on the nVidia website... /the/ source for information about Apple products. Great to know, I just ordered one for my 1st Gen Mac Pro running Tiger. I even asked at the Apple Store, they didn't know about the requirement because it isn't listed on the product page and told me since I meet all the listed requirements I should assume it'll work (if not, I could return it).
Yes, that stinks. Now to the store for an OS upgrade I really don't need and didn't want, and all because the x1900xt I could've been happy with constanly fails.

  • Classic won't start under Tiger

When I try to start classic, it hangs as soon as the startup "Smiley Mac" screen appears"
My computer will boot from OS9 system folder, but not start classic either from system preferences or automatically if I'm in Tiger.
I've fixed OS9 permissions from Disk Utility, turned off all extensions, rebuilt desktop, checked that there's only one OS9 on drive...what's next?
    Thanks, mavens!

Ok...at this point, we know the system will boot to 9, but not startup 9 from inside of X - rather, it starts, then hangs after the splash screen. I'm back to extensions.
I know you said you had disabled them once; I come back to the same conclusion for a couple of reasons.
If it were a disk error, bad block, or corrupted (os9) system file, then it is most probable that booting the machine to 9 would also fail. Since that works, and we know extensions are the first thing that loads on power on...
Also, I did have this same problem when I first switched to X (about v10.0.4). But it's been so long since I resolved that issue, I cannot recall which one(s) I disabled. I am using the same HD and OS9 system folder I used then (moved the drive to this machine), and have not toyed with the extension settings since resolving the problem.
Rather than use the all/no extension option in the X Classic control pane, I would boot the machine to 9, run extension manager, and select the "all off" option. This does not rely on Xs ability to disable them on the fly, and will disable any extensions that load before extensions manager does (there are a few) and is permanent (until you turn them back on.)
Reboot to X, then try to run Classic.
If it works, then rerun extension manager and select "OS9.2 extensions only" which will not load any 3rd party extensions.
