Reinstalling graphics card

Hi.  I recently did a fresh install of my HP Pavilion a1700n, setting it up as a Win 8 64-bit OS instead of the Win 8 32-bit OS and I have a Nvidia Twin Frozr 560ti that I'm trying to reinstall.  Problem is, every time I hook up my card and attempt to follow the directions that came with the card to set it back up, the graphics (artifacts I guess you might call them) are so bad that I can't see to install everything.  The only way I could contact the forums was to unplug the power connectors from my card and boot back into the onboard video.
What should I do to get my video card reinstalled?
This question was solved.

Hi RobCask. First we need to determine if it is a driver issue. I'd like you to enter the computer BIOS and tell me if the artifacting exists there too. If it does, its a hardware issue, and you may want to contact the card manufacturer. If not, revert back to onboard drivers and uninstall any existing NVidia drivers and reinstall before installing the card.
Use this document to help you enter the BIOS.

  • Reinstalling graphics card ROM

    Hi everyone.
I think I need to reinstall my Mobility Radeon 9000's ROM, it seems to have been corrupted with the 10.4.4 update.
The problem: Blue lines, dots, artifacts, generally in dark or shaded areas on the desktop. Yellom lines, dots, artifacts, generally inside windows. Appear at graphical boot, text boot and normal OS X operation. Move around when windows are moved around.
Artifacts are even there on screenshots, this is really weird.
    Measures taken to correct issue:
    Reinstall 10.4.4
    Reinstall 10.4.4 Combo
    Reinstall 10.4
Reinstall 10.4.3, and back up to 10.4 again.
-> So far, seems to not be related to installation of OS X
Reset PMU with reset button, clock reset
    Reset PRAM with cmd-opt-P-R
    done reset-nvram in OF
    done reset-all in OF
Although not for OEM cards, tried various ATI updates
    Still no improvement.
I have been trying to correct this since 10.4.4 came out, pretty desperate right now. Can anyone help? I can't find any info on this.
    Thank you.

I can certainly see from the screenshot that you have a problem there, but I never doubted that. Its cause remains unclear.
Because wiping your hard drive and reinstalling all the software has made no difference, and others have obviously updated to 10.4.4 without encountering the same problem, I'm convinced that one of two things must be true: either a) you have a hardware problem that just happened to show up after the 10.4.4 update was applied, as a matter of confusing coincidence; or b) there is, as you suggest, a firmware problem arising from the update, but no fix is available yet — and not all 1GHz Tibooks are affected, or I would surely have seen other posts here reporting the same problem. I read all the Tibook Discussions on a daily basis.
As you can see, I'm not running Tiger myself. For what it's worth, here's info from ASP about my Powerbook and its GPU:

Radeon HD 5770 graphics card works perfectly with my MAC Pro 1,1 and Adobe CS6. However, I upgraded to Adobe CC and Photoshop CC disabled some filters and 3D functionality. The preference panel for Performance/Graphics Card in Photoshop CC is greyed out and inaccessible and shows this message -
"Photoshop detected an error in your display driver. Update or reinstall the driver and check Use Graphics Processor to retry."
I still have Photoshop CS6 installed and it still works perfectly. Anyone else with this issue? Is there a driver update for this compatable with my setup?

I'm not aware of any, not to say that there aren't any issues.
it may have nothing to do with ntpd, there are a lot of things running.
ntpd just happen to make the log entry at the same time as the panic.
I would check to see if there are any updates available for you system.
if this is the first time that this has happened. it may be (pick one):
    cosmic rays
    sun spots
    the trilateral commission
if this happens more frequently and that traces look the same, then
there may be a real problem that needs to be looked into further.

  • Reinstall a MacBook Pro with a dead graphics card?

I have a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 Inch. Its graphics card died. I want to do a clean install of OS X Mavericks. However, if I do this, screen sharing will go off, and I will be blind during the installation. How can I do a clean install?
If I connnect the hard drive externally, then it will get the wrong drivers during the installation, if I do it via Target Disk Mode, same thing.
I have a 2007 MacBook Pro 15 Inch. I know the drivers will be closer on this, but will they be the exact same?
Is voiceover during the installation good enough to navigate blindly? If it is, I could just go blind, and once its set up use voiceover to turn screen sharing on. I know voiceover will suffice once it is up and running to get screen sharing on. (I did it that way when the graphics card went out initially)
Is voiceover during the installation good enough to navigate blindly?
I am going to use this as a server, and I want to make absolutely sure that everything that I didn't put on is off.
    It is already backed up.

I purchased my MacBook Pro that way last year (180 days same as cash). They were pretty slow approving the card even though I have good credit. I payed very close attention to the dates and made sure all was paid off before the end of the 180 days and had no issues. I was also careful about not charging anything else to the card until I paid off the MBP, gets a lot harder to understand and control what they consider the promotional amount paid when you start mixing in other purchases and payments for those.
For me it worked out great, Almost 6 months to pay is better than 1 big hit.

  • Graphic card losing drivers?

I finally got me a PCI-E card for my K8N-Neo3. I found a Gainward 6600 GT Golden sample at a reasonable price. I installed it and has run it for a week or so. Done some 3dmarks with good results and a big smile on my face.
Though lately I have run into some problems. Sometimes when i play AmericasArmy and Alt+tab out of the game or just escape to the settings I get graphic errors. A really weird error where the whole screen goes stripey and I cant do anything. At a few times I have been able to close the game and get the screen right again but most times it just locks up. When It locks I turn the comp off and restart. When its restarted the drivers for my graphic card are lost and the card uses some sort of windows rescue driver. The only way to get it back to normal is to reinstall the drivers from scratch.
I have no clue as to why it does this. I have tries a few different drivers with the same results(blue screens with some, IRQ NOT LESS OR EQUAL) and also tried changing the clock on my graphic card, CPU and Memory but its still the same. Sometimes it works fine for days, sometimes it crashes three times in an hour.
The temp on my graphic card doesnt go above 70 degrees at load and cpu, sys and harddrives are under or around 40 deg.
Any clues?  Im thinking format c:  myself

Well the memtest show no errors.
But I believe its the powersupply thats a bit weak. I only have a 360W chieftech with 17Amps on the 12v line. And I hear 6600 GT cards are notoriously powerhungry.
I guess another upgrade is the key.
Yeah, plenty of good stable power will solve all kinds of problems. Some obvious, some not so.
Shoot for 450W+ & more than 24A and that should take care of things and then some.

  • HP G62-455TX Graphic Card malfunctioning

Problem is the laptop screen flickered and went off several times, displaying error message that AMD crashed. I reinstalled the drivers replacing the older with the older version and then with the latest version given on the website.
But in both cases, the laptop screen totally went blank not even showing the BIOS screen. I connected it to the external monitor to get the output. It shows a bluescreen dead screen and restarts. However, it boots up on the safe mode (but on a external monitor).
However, The laptop screen is off blank throughout.
I tried booting it up with Linux-Fedora 20 XFCE, but it gave error in loading Radeon graphic card, and it did not even boot up.

I see that the display flickered several times and then displayed a black or blank screen.  You connected an external monitor and on startup a blue screen displays and restarts.
You tried booting into Safe mode but nothing displays on the external monitor.  Notebook display remains blank.
You tried booting with LInux but it also gave the graphic card error.
Here is a link to Troubleshooting Black Screen Displays with No Error Messages During Startup or Boot to assist you.
Here is the HP G62 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide.  You will notice there is no recommended replacement graphic cards.
You would need to replace the motherboard or system board.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Graphic Card(GT 330M) Temporary Fix

Have seen lot of Posts regarding this issue to which i found a temporary fix and thought might be helpfull to someone else
I am with a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro
    2.66 i7
    4gb ram
Nvidia Geforce gt 330m / Intel HD Graphics(228 mb)
    Lion 10.7.2
its been above 4 years my mb was working fine untill i decided to do a clean install of Mountain Lion and started facing this Crash Issues,
within this week i tryed to reinstall snow leopard and lion and tryed to overcome this crash issue but noting worked(couldnt reinstall snow bcaz it wouldnt boot for me)
Havent taken it to a showroom or repair centre since i already figured that this issue is due to the nvidia graphic card that came with this mb(but planing to once i save enuf money for a new repair)
for now i am on 10.7.2(lion) and my fix to this issue is gfxCardStatus 2.2.1(the new version of gfx does automatic switching for me which gives me no control)
Bfore this when ever i opend Logic Pro the gfx status automatically moved to Discrete which after a while lead to black screen and a force restart,so i came across this fix and its been working well for me
    how to ;-
1 - install gfxCardStatus 2.2.1(google it for download link)
2 - switch energy saver in system prefs to battery saver and select Intergrated Mode in gfcardstatus from the menu bar
    Note ;-
    - after restart the defualt in gfx bcomes dynamic switching and while selecting Intergrated mode the screen will have white lines and garbled issue.
3 - so bfore restart i quit gfx and uninstall it(move it to trash n empty)
4 - after restart the gfx menu dosent come up on bar so i reinstall it from a extrnal usb or drive or redownload it from internet and install it back n repeat set 2 from how to notes.
Now repeating this process when i open Logic Pro the gfx stays on Intergrated Only allowing me to finish my projects with full concentration and without any black screen or force restarts.
Hope this works well for some one out there.

    Spill Cleaning
Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
Note what was spilled on your Mac.
Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).

  • Problem with recognising radeon 6490M graphics card on Pavilion dv6-6176sa

    So,
My laptop was having some issues recently with the graphics, it basically wouldn't recognise either the intel or the radeon graphics card. I tried updating all drivers under the sun but nothing worked. In the end I formatted my computer and reinstalled windows, did all necessary updates windows and HP ones. Now my laptop would recognise both the intel and radeon in device manager but my computer was constantly using the intel card, I read up a bit and figured this would be due to an issue with the switchable graphics.
I did the bios and drivers updates and changed switchable graphics to fixed mode, this seemed to do the trick and my laptop ran like it should be for a few days. This morning I start watching some of my shows and then my screen freezes and it starts making a bunch of noise (similar to what it was doing pre-factory reset). Oh dear, I turn it off, and leave it off for a bit figuring maybe it had overheated. I turn it on again, now device manager wont show the radeon card and AMD catalyst produces a warning message saying that there is no AMD driver compatible with the CCC (well it was just fine yesterday, no updates, program installations or anything run since then)
I'm now wondering whether there may just be a hardware issue and that it's time to pack in my laptop or if this could still be a driver issue.

    @Piids
Download and install the most current AMD graphics softpaq.
You can get it from the download section of your notebook's web support portal.
Do not install the Intel graphics driver softpaq seperately. Doing that will remove the switchable graphics feature.

  • MBP Cycles Through the Graphic Cards when MS Office Apps Load Templates

I am preparing my MacBook Pro mid-2010, running Mavericks, for my girlfriend. I created an admin account for her and deleted mine, as well as my old user files. But now, when opening MS 2011 apps (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), while loading the the template gallery, the computer starts cycling between the integrated and Nvidia graphic cards many times, making the screen flicker and the process takes a long time. I have gfxCardStatus and it sends tens of notifications to OS X, which keep popping up on the screen. The video card cycling also happens while selecting 'File -> New from Template...'. If I disable the Automatic Graphics Switching, so only the Nvidia card is active, loading the templates is very fast (but this is not a solution, really).
I reinstalled Office 2011, updated it to version 14.3.9, but it did not help.
This was not happening before, when I was using the computer from my account (and neither happens on my late-2013 RMBP). This phenomenon is very frustrating when opening and using the MS Office apps and I will really appreciate your help to fix this.
    Thank you.

    Anyone, please?
I noticed that the switching back-and-forth happens only in MS Word and MS Excel, as MS PowerPoint and MS Outlook are supposed to permanently use the the discrete card anyway. To reiterate, the switching between the graphic cards happens only while loading the templates in MS Word and MS Excel (when the program starts) and is very annoying, and it sometimes even crashes my gfxCardStatus, too.
I hope someone could please suggest some ideas. Thank you.

  • How do I get Windows 8 to function with my Iris Graphics card?

    Hello!
I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro retina with 8 GB of RAM and Iris graphics card.
I am having a problem in WIndows 8 64 bit (I'm using bootcamp 5). It seems as the Windows 8 doesn't work properly with the Iris graphics card. Under display adapter information it shows only 32 MB of dedicated video memory. And I only want windows on my mac because of occasional video games. No games run with 32 MB of video memory. And it seems that windows drivers are correct because it recognises the Iris 5100 graphics card...
I tried reinstalling bootcamp drivers and went to Intel's website for newer versions of Iris drivers but nothing helped. Is there a way to allocate more memory to the graphics card or some other solution?
I would really appreciate help on this.
I attached a screenshot of the display adapter information panel in windows 8.

Dedicated is how much physical memory it have software cant change that its the same deal in osx

  • Since updating to Mavericks, my graphics card keeps crashing OSX and forcing a reboot. Anything I can do?

    Hello community!
This is the first major problem I've had with my Macbook since I got it over a year ago. This is a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina Display (Mid-2012 - 2.2 GHz).
Everything was fine until I upgraded to Mavericks, and ever since then, my entire system cuts out and has to reboot when trying to do graphically-intense applications. So far, I've had this problem with the following programs:
Safari/Chrome (when playing embedded videos that are not from YouTube)
    Adobe Photoshop CC
    iPhoto (the brand new one)
    Sid Meier's Railroads!
    Civilization V
    Demolition Company
    Roller Coaster Tycoon 3
Preview + Pixelmator (at the same time)
All of these programs are the most recent stable versions.
That this whole problem is being caused by my graphics card is merely an assumption that is based on the list of programs that make it crash. All of the rest of the applications that I use (Mail, Calendar, Tweetbot, iTunes, etc etc etc) run completely flawlessly.
Here's what usually happens - I start a game, for instance. I go through the menus and everything just fine. Once I start an acutal scenario, it loads and finally puts me into the game. It runs and I can interact with the entire UI for about 10-15 seconds, at which point, everything - the screen, the audio, the fans - instantly turn off. It's as quick as someone unplugging a desktop computer.
The computer is unresponsive to me trying to turn it back on for about 30-60 seconds (depending on the app that made it crash). Eventually, the power button "works" and everything comes back. The computer reboots normally, and presents me with an error message.
This has happened dozens of times over the last few weeks, and I can repeat the problem very easily (just open up something on the list!). Below is a crash report that I just got after the one that involved Pixelmator + Preview.
If there's anything that anyone sees that I can do to fix this, I would be extremely appreciative. Thank you so much, everyone!

I went ahead and went into safe mode and uninstalled Parallels Desktop 9 as well as Parallels Access, which I figure were the programs associated with the "culprit" you listed. I uninstalled by dragging them from Applications folder to the Trashbin, which is the only way I know how to uninstall a program as well as the way that Parallels recommends themselves. I shut down the laptop and started it again normally. I didn't bother reinstalling Paralells Desktop yet because I really don't use it that often.
Anyway, I tried a game just to see if it had removed the problem, and it did it again, unfortunately.
I then tried to run the Hardware Test, but it brought up something about an internet test instead of a hardware test. For what it's worth, that ran for about 30 seconds before giving me an error code.
Did I do something wrong, or is there anything else I can try?
EDIT: I tried the Hardware test again, and I ran into the same problem. This time, at least, I got some more details. It's trying to go into "Internet Recovery Mode," and I run into error code -1006D.
EDIT 2: Also, here's the Crash report from the one just now:

  • Graphics Card Failure! can no longer use my Mac

Today while view images in iPhoto (latest version)
My screen suddenly flickered red and the the lower 3 quarters of the screen (apple cinema display 24) went all scrambled.
    I shut down.
I checked the display by attaching it to my mac mini and no problems, works perfectly.
I reattached the display to my Mac Pro again.
I booted in safe mode and the screen was barely discernible and totally psychedelic (reds and magenta's) but I could navigate around.
decided to reboot and zap the PRAM (x3).
let the machine continue after 3rd PRAM zap and the screen was totally unreadable.
rebooted in safe mode and screen was worse.
tried to reboot with the snow leopard dvd using "option" this screen came up fine.
chose the 10.6 install disc and the grey apple screen with the little time elapse wheel came up as the disc was being read, about 5 mins into the dvd read the screen froze.
decided to start machine in target disc mode "T key" and attached the Mac Pro to my mini via firewire. all of the mac pro's internal discs mounted, I check all discs with disk utility and they all passed
repaired blessed drive and it passed with no problems.
decided to reinstall snow leopard from mini onto mac pro blessed drive.
tried booting up mini from mac pro blessed dive and no problem starting up mini.
tried rebooting mac pro to see if this new reinstall would work and it locked up during startup.
tried to reboot with my original system install discs that came with my mac pro by using the "option" at start to choose startup disc and system locked up after about 5 mins.
also tried reboot mac pro in safe mode again and the screen is now black after several minutes.
I can't remember the exact model of nVidia car I have, I believe it's the 8800 GT (need to look at my receipt ) I bought in in January when this model came out.
anyone else have a video card die like this?
I plan to drag in my unit to a Genius Bar and see if they can test or swap out the card.
    what a hassle.

    See my thread here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2335070&tstart=0
Apparently, the graphics card is dead.
I also booted into Win XP. While the XP interface did not crash (I have the Win 2000 skin active, which obviously doesn't have any 3D stuff), as soon as I launched a game (GTA IV), the system crashed.
I'll get a Radeon HD 4870 now. I just hope, nothing else is broken...
    Good luck!

  • Power Mac G5 crashes after installing new Graphics Card

Hello, this is my first post and if anyone can offer any help with my problem I would greatly appreciate it. Sorry for the long description, but I want to get all of the facts out.
Its a bit convoluted, but here goes...
I was having a problem with one of my G5 computers and I thought at first that the problem was the graphics card. So I bought an ATI Radeon 9600XT card on eBay. Before that card arrived, I determined that the problem with the computer was a faulty firewire card, I replaced that and this computer now runs fine.
After the Radeon card was delivered, I put it in another G5 (1.6 processor) being that it was an upgrade from the nVidia GeForce FX 5200 that was already in the computer. After about a week, this computer crashed and crashed repeatedly. So I switched the card back to the original nVidia GeForce FX 5200, but it still kept crashing.
I then initialized the drive and reinstalled 10.4. This did not solve the problem, the computer keeps crashing with the screen that says "this computer needs to restart..." same as before. I then swapped this nVidia GeForce FX 5200 card with another identical nVidia card that I have from a 3rd G5. This not only did not stop the crashes, but caused this third G5 to crash.
When I start the G5 1.6 up in safe boot, the computer does not crash and will run stable.
I really would appreciate any advice.

Ok I ran AHT on both machines and everything passed on both. The G5 #1 (1.6) restarted and ran ok (in and out of sleep mode) overnight. When I shut down, the screen went dark and all seemed well, but the computer never actually "shut off".
Anyway I thought that if I could pull the panic logs from each machine that it may be helpful for someone to diagnose just exactly what is going on. So here are the panic logs for each G5.

  • Is there a Replacement Program for 2009 iMacs with MXM Graphics Cards?

I have an iMac 24" Early 2009 with the Nvidia GeForce GT 120 256MB MXM graphics card that is freezing and crashing over-and-over, especially when I'm away and it's not connected to my 2nd display! Odd. I've done the usual (cleaned the iMac inside, run fsck, SMC reset, PRAM reset, repair permissions from boot USB, disconnected all peripherals, changed mice and keyboards, changed the HD, reinstalled the OS, run Onyx and so on) and finally decided that it's a faulty graphics card that only a replacement will fix. When I'm home it's more stable when connected via a Displayport DVI adapter to DVI cable to a 24" Dell display. When standalone (like when traveling with my iMac for long stints out of town) it's unusable. It won't run for longer than 30 minutes, often not even 10 minutes, then I get screen artifacts and freezes and then have to fsck to repair the drive before running it again. Only running it in Safe Mode will allow it to run reliably.
However, I believe that I found a stopgap solution. I installed a program which I downloaded after installing XCode called Quartz Debug which has apparently allowed me to disable Quartz Extreme, 2D Acceleration and Quartz GL.
Turning off all Quartz graphics enhancements makes this machine stable if not exactly completely "mac-like" in its performance, but it's at least usable under most conditions for long periods of time. I know of people who have replaced the MXM graphics card on this machine with good effect, but it's an expensive proposition and these cards are apparently few and far between. Has anyone done this?
Based on the large number of nearly identical complaints about this model, both here and elsewhere, it seems like this MXM graphics card is defective or Apple's drivers are defective . . . well maybe, but it very, very predictably crashes when the computer gets hotter and not even _extremely_ hot, but well within what would be normal operating temps for other machines.
I've disassembled and completely cleaned the inside and have replaced the HD with an SSD and removed the optical drive entirely so if anything I've reduced heat-producing devices from the interior of the device installed a fan control and keep the graphics card features mostly turned off.
I've looked for but have yet to see a recall or warranty replacement program for this device and no, I don't have Applecare. I've owned several Apple products in the last two decades and with the issues with Apple products in recent years, it seems like Applecare must be figured as part of any Apple purchase if reliability and ongoing support is desired.
Ironically, I have an Apple IIc and a Power Computing Power Tower 166 that still work just fine, thank you!

This cropped up on my wife's late 2009 model 27" iMac, too.  Random freezes were encountered, unable to identify cause for months, then one day it started to become unable to complete a normal boot.  Tech Tool Deluxe was the only direct indication as far as diagnostics are concerned.  I've NEVER been abvle to get Apple's hardware diagnostic to run from the cloud, and we fianlly got it on a Techs' bench, AHT showed nothing wrong.  As you said, Safe boot is the only way to get into the system, and performance under 10.8.5 is glacial.
Now the kicker - we DID have AppleCare, and this phase of the MXM graphics demise hit within 4 or 5 months of AppleCare expiration.  There's no longer a flat-rate repair option, Apple doesn't have any stock of the video board to sell as a replacement part (was $169, or $179 w/no exchange) and even refurbs of this paltry (512MB VRAM) board can hit $300.  I know Mac users have become 2nd-class citizens in Apple's business universe, but we're now looking at sub-42 month lifespans for hardware?  At $2k for a machine that lacks touchscreen option, that's out of line.
