Reinstalling lion server but keeping users/groups including their home folder, mail, etc

I need to reinstall my lion server due to some changes in the DNS. I have a time machine backup of the server.
Is there an easy way to transfer/migrate only user data (home folder, mail, calendar, address book).. I do not need to recover the whole server as some services need to be reconfigured.
Can I use the installtion program as there is an option to migrate from other serves? If so, can I select what to migrate?
Thanks

Migration can be handled by the installer or run post-installation by launching /Applications/Utilities/Migration Assistant.app. You'll get three checkboxes: User accounts, applications and "other data." You can exclude certain users from migration, but you can't otherwise alter the list of files brought in from your backup.
You might choose to migrate users and applications, then, post-install, mount your Time Machine backup as a volume and copy over whatever arbitrary data you want to recover. Don't forget to turn Time Machine off so you don't risk clobbering your backed-up data.
Best of luck.

  • How can a Windows user remotely access their Home folder on a MacOSX Server

I have a staff member who would like to remotely access (ourside of our LAN) their Home folder on our Mac OSX server. Anyone know and willing to share the process?
    Thanks

    Hi Brad!
Generally, a VPN solution is best to allow someone access to your company network. VPN provides security and access to some or all of your company's network resources.
If AFP is allowed to pass through the VPN tunnel, then your user would connect via VPN first and then connect to the server with a connect string such as "afp://servername".
Or if your user's home folder is also shared as a Windows share, your user could connect via VPN first and then connect to the server with a connect string such as "smb://servername".
    Hope this helps! bill

  • How do I install OSX onto a new SSD (in the place of my optical drive) without transferring all data across.  However, with the applications, system and library on the SSD to improve the speed, but keep non essential items (the home folder) on the HDD

I have a mid 2009 13 inch unibody 2.53GHz MacBook Pro.  I'm finding that it doesn't run as quickly as it used to.
A genius in the Apple store suggested that I replace my optical drive with an SSD, however only use the SSD for OSX, applications, system and library.  Keep all documents, pictures, music etc on the current hard drive.
I would be grateful if someone could help me with:
    1) installing OSX on the SSD without copying across data from the current hard drive
    2) transferring applications, system and library folders across to the SSD so that they still function
    3) changing my settings so that OSX reads the home folder from the current hard drive, as well as all the applications' data (documents, music etc...)
However, I would like to run iMovie, with all events etc solely from the SSD to speed up the process of editing movies.
If anyone could help with this, it would be much appreciated.

If you got the data transfer cable with your SSD, the procedure should be pretty simple - and there should be step-by-step instructions in the box. You're simply going to remove the bottom case of your computer (using a Phillips #00 screwdriver), take out the two screws in the bracket holding the hard drive into place (using same screwdriver), remove the drive and (use a Torx 6 screwdriver) remove the four screws that hold the hard drive in place. Then put in the SSD and reassemble the machine.
Then you'll plug up the old hard drive by using the SATA to USB cable and use the option key to boot from the old drive. I don't know what data transfer software Crucial provides, but I would recommend formatting the SSD  using Disk Utility from your old drive ("Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition) and then use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your old drive to your new SSD (see this user tip for cloning - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4122). You needn't worry about getting an enclosure since you have the data transfer cable and you don't want to use your old hard drive.
There are a number of videos on YouTube that take you step-by-step through this procedure - many specific to Crucial SSDs and their data transfer kit - do a little searching there if you're unsure of how to procede.

  • How do I restrict an sFTP user to just their home folder?

Today I setup a user for on my Mac specifically for someone to sFTP files to my computer.
I tested the connection on another computer on the network, it worked OK but I quickly realised that after logging in via an FTP client, I could got to the root dir and start to navigate around other folders, getting to other home directories, download photos etc.. all of which I dont want the user to do.
I would like the FTP user to login, and only see their home directory, nothing else.
the root shouldnt show any files for example.
I have tried to lock things down and its a bit better, ensuring that a lot of the folders have owner only permissions, and group write only.
However there are some folders that cannot be locked down by default.
    /Applications
For example, any user can read any file in that folder, even if the user is only intended to FTP files.
i have tried changing the group the user belongs to (changing it from 'Staff' to 'Nobody') but it doesnt seem to make a difference.
Hope someone can help me with this please, perhaps there is a better way. I have not used any terminal commands in what I have done, everything has been  via the GUI (which I guess should be sufficient).

    Thanks Linc,
    that has helped a lot.
Here is what I have done for the record:
    1) opened the sshd_config file in /etc
         sudo vi sshd_config
    2) added the following lines to the very bottom of the file:
    Match User MYUSER
    # The following two directivces force klm to become chrooted
    # and only have sftp available. No other chroot setup is required
    ChrootDirectory /Users/MYUSER/
    ForceCommand internal-sftp
    # For additional paranoia, siallow all types of port forwardings
    AllowTcpForwarding no
    GatewayPorts no
    X11Forwarding no
    3) Saved the file and tried to reconnect
    4) My FTP Software (on another computer on the network) wouldnt connect! I kept getting an error message:
Error: Server unexpectedly closed network conection
Error: Could not connect to server
    5) I opened up the "Console" program and looked at the secure.log under /var/log and saw the following entry:
Aug  2 10:28:57 rmlloyd-imac sshd[6590]: fatal: bad ownership or modes for chroot directory component "/Users/MYUSER"
This made me realise that it was someting to do with permissions on the home folder, but I still dont quite appreciate why the user logging in doesnt have permissions to its own folder as a root.
    6) Some searching on the internet yielded something like the perfect answer, that a home directory cannot be set as a chroot directory.
So I changed the ChrootDirectory to:
    ChrootDirectory /Users
    7) Attempt to login with sFTP again works! What I see is the root appears to be the contents of /Users
    Conclusion
This is much much better than the situation I was in originally, I can set access permissions to the home directories, but the ftp user still sees them. Its not perfect but it nearly is.
I really wish I didnt have to mess around in the terminal though, as fun as it is, a check box added by apple to the user UI would do the job much easier. e.g.
"Restrict user to home folder only" - makes the home folder the root
"Restrict user to the following activities" - then have check boxes for sFTP etc...
Then the apple UI can write to the sshd_config for me .
All in all, I am very pleased and have learnt a fair bit from setting this up, so thanks to those that replied and I hope this information helps someone else one day.

  • I want to erase my hard drive and reinstall  lion server. Can someone help me out?

i have a mac mini running lion server. I want to erase all the date and start fresh. When i try to reinstall Lion it does not show anything about lion server but jut Lion. I want to make sure I do it properly. It is also asking me in which hard drive to install Lion but im unsure.
    can someone help me out?

Check in the app store under purchases both lion and server should show up there to download again.
No need to erase both drives for a clean install just the drive you are using for the OSX. Though if you are truly starting a fresh then erase and reformat both.
As for Upgrades. Yosemite is the only upgrade now available through the app store as is Server 4.0 for Yosemite. I have not tested the latest server yet and can not comment on it's reliability.
Any server you set up should be thoroughly tested on a closed network before going live.
    Hope this helps.

  • I want to upgrade to lion server but I need to install version 10.7 first?. Were do I find 10.7?

I have a mac mini server currently with OSx 10.6.8.  I want to upgrade to lion server but am told I need to install version 10.7 first?
Went to app store, cant find version 10.7. can anyone help me locate where I download server version 10.7?

The current version of Server on the MacApp Store has been updated
to 2.0 and requires Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8).  You could just
upgrade to Mountain Lion.  With the exception of some new features,
it is in reality an improvement to Lion.  The upgrade is cheaper as well.
If your Mini Server can be updated to it, you might as well just go with
    Mountain Lion.
You do realize that the OS and server are two seperate entities now?

  • How do I delete duplicate songs, but keep a link in their original albums to the single copy of the song left, so it will play in each album in sequence as if it were still there?

    Greetings!
After importing my 300 or so CDs into iTunes, I found I have tons of duplicate songs.
Example: I have a song that came in a original album, then in again in a "Greatest Hits" album, then again in a "Hits of the 80's" album, and again in a soundtrack album. I have now have 4 copies of the exact same song.
How do I delete duplicate songs, but keep a link in their original albums back to the single copy of the song left, so it will play in each album in sequence as if it were still there?
I don't think this currently exists, but as my library keeps growing the duplicates keep growing.  It would be nice if Apple sees this and adds a way to link songs to multiple albums.
I don't want to create a custom playlist for every album that has a duplicate song or two (I'd have dozens of playlists) - thought about fixing it that way but not really practical.

To my knowledge, there is no way of doing what you want. The only workaround is to create playlists for the other albums containing the track, but that isn't practical for most people.
You could provide Apple with feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

  • Keep loosing access to my home folder

    Hi,
Could you please help to diagnose my MBP? I've been struggling to do it for a couple of weeks now
The MacBook malfunction in two different ways:
    A. Keep loosing access to my home folder (usually when I'm browsing in Safari):
    1. The system stops to being responsive for 15-30 seconds, and then
    2. In Finder -> Places my home folder (wk) alias is missing, and I get the error "The alias "wk" can't be opened because the original item can't be found"
    3. In /Users the permissions to the folder are being changed (I haven't noted what exactly are the permissions), and I get the error "The folder "wk" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see it's contents"
    4. kernel.log shows I/O errors for disk0s2
    5. Disk utility verification shows the filesystems is in a perfect state, but the regular problems with /System/Library/java/* permissions won't be fixed
    6. System reboot fixes the issue
    B. Kernel panic (the very first I've seen happened four weeks ago, and then three followed during the previous week)
    1. I got the usual grey screen, and reboot
    2. kernel.log shows Page Fault, in all cases with kernel as the "app in focus"
I've taken the following steps to diagnose the problems:
    1. Disk Utility verification shows the filesystems is in a perfect state,
    2. There're always a problem with permissions in /System/Library/java/... (always fixable)
    3. Run extended AHT in a loop (no problems found) - didn't help
    4. Reinstalled the OS - didn't help with problem A, although problem B hasn't happened ever since (a coincidence?)
    5. Put back original RAM dice  - didn't help with problem A
    6. Zeroed the HDD and installed from a scratch - didn't help with problem A
    7. Exchanged HDD to a brand new one (was planning to do that either way) and restored the OS from point 6. - didn't help with problem A

  • Multiple users pointed to the same location as their "Home Folder"

One of the things we need to be able to do for out work is share folders. We are project based and do not want to store the projects in the users "eDirectory User" home folder. We made some initial test assigning two users to the same "Home Folder" and shared a folder and had multiple accounts both internal and external pick-up and drop off files in the folder.
While it appears to work, I wanted to find out if there are downsides in having 20-30 people with the same Filr "Home Folder". What are the potential "gotchas". Security (internal) isn't an issues since these network locations are accessible by all the users anyway.

    Hi!
    Gotchas?
Well, it essentially does exactly what it is supposed to do.
(BTW, i have tested this with Filr 1.0.1 some time ago, if 1.1 behaves
differently this would bw a MAJOR product change.)
    Given:
Two internal Users A+B with the homedirs pointing to the exact same path
    \\Server\Dir
    One external User c@tld
    * User A logs in and creates a directory X and shares it with contribute
    rights to c@tld.
    * User c@tld logs in and creates a file X\file
    * User B logs in, see a folder X and the file with A as the author. The
folder IS NOT shared to everyone (at least as far as user B is concerned,
the user does NOT set the sharing details of user A)
    * User B shares the same folder X with c@tld with view only rights.
    * User c@tld clicks the link from User B and IS NOT able to contribute.
    * User c@tld is puzzled and calls User A asking why his rights have been
    revoked.... etc. etc.
    * User B has the (for him readonly) data somewhere else and calls the folder
    X obsolete and deletes it.
    * User A and c@tld are really pissed off.... etc. etc.
    * User c@tld has several different links with potentially different rights
all pointing to the same physical location...
    etc.
Again, it does exactly what it is supposed to do - from a technical point of
view, but this might not be what the users/organization can
    handle/expect...

  • Lion Server: All network users have disappeared

    Hi,
A search through the forums and kbase didn't give me anything that mapped well to my problem. Here's the situation:
    Specs:
Mac Pro (2008) 6GB RAM, SSD boot with space available, OS X Lion (latest) with Server.app
    Services:
    File Sharing
Users: less than 15—accounts only used for file server access.
This is the only server on the local network, all network routing is taken care of by a Meraki router.
I went to add a new user to our fileserver, and was unable to connect to the server over Apple Remote Desktop. At the time, file sharing from the server (I *believe*) was still working. I logged in with the file server's local admin account via SSH and tried to use Kickstart to get ARD running again—something I'm well versed in. The script ran as usual, but ARD could still not connect. So, as everyone was in a meeting, I tried to use `shutdown` to reboot the fileserver from the CLI, something I've also done in the past (but not frequently). Usually that takes about a minute to work, and then my shell disconnects—but after 5 minutes, the Mac had not rebooted.
At that point, I decided to walk to the server and manually force it down by holding the power button in. That powered off the Mac, and 30 seconds later, I booted it up.
Back on my Mac via ARD, I was able to remotely control it and got to the Fileserver's log in screen, which featured a red dot in the use field I'd never seen before. It's tool tip read "network users are currently unavailable" (paraphrased, perhaps). I logged in with the Fileserver's local admin user (as usual) and launched the Server.app, only to find that in the `Users` section, there were no users listed, and the plus and minus buttons were greyed out.
I tried rebooting but got the same results. I then repaired permissions and verified the boot drive. Lots of permissions repairs (as usual) but nothing improved. Another reboot after the permission repair and disk repair, just for safety's sakes… and as you can guess by me posting here… no improvement.
I'm not heavily versed in Server. I'm not even sure if those users are stored in a database, and where that DB would live. Does server make dumps or backups of the users on its own? Should I have been? Is this LDAP? Anyone have some next steps I can try? What info would be useful?
My first goal would be to recover a damaged DB. I only have just under 15 users, so re-creation isn't difficult. But, under the department of "I don't know a ton about Lion Server" I don't know if network users act like OS X users… where you could create a new user with the same username, but if their UID is different, then they won't have access to their owned files on the fileserver… is Server that exacting? Does it care who owns the file?
Thanks in advance for any ideas, or resources you can point me to!

    It gets far weirder……
Now no one, myself included can log in.
Checking the logs, which I'll try to attach a small sample of here (Dropbox link below since you can only attach images here), I see repeated instance of both `opendirectoryd` crashing and respawning, and of server manager unable to authenticate:

  • Mountain Lion Server: add network user to remote management

    Hi,
So recently I have upgraded from Lion Server to ML Server. A little disappointing, but whatever, I've moved on and got everything almost back to where I had it with Lion.
My last few issues I believe are related but can't quite figure it out. In Lion I have an admin profile and then a network user profile that I used on my MBP bound with AD. I'm at the stage where my nre network user can log in on the server machine but I can't log in as the network user via screen sharing. I can't add a network user to Remote Management, and with Remote Management enabled Screen Sharing is greyed out. I'd really like this to work.
My second problem is that I can't bind my MBP to the server but even when bound the network user account can't log in.
    Any body have  any ideas?
    Thanks!

I had this problem on a clean install.
The solution was incredibly simple for me, but only  after I saw Ross.M's note about opening the Users & Groups settings panel (in the OS System Prefs, not in server) and rebinding to OD server under Login Options.
That was not the solution for me, but under Login Options I discovered a previously unnoticed pref for "Allow network users to login at login window."  I had this option set (apparently by default) to "Only these network users:"  but with an empty list.  Adding my users to the list made it work perfectly.
    Talk about KISS

  • Looking at Lion Server but can't tell what is really inlcuded

I am thinking about getting the Mac Mini with Lion Server installed. How every, I have found the documentation to be confusing.  I am needing a Filemaker, SMTP, PHP, MySQL web server mainly. I would really like to talk to someone who is using this type of setup first.

Indeed Lion will do all of what you need.  MySQL is not included with Lion however.  You'll need to install it yourself.
It's not that bad though.  I've walked a class of Grade 12's through it!  hehe
Lion instead comes with PostgreSQL.  I'm not familiar with it, but I assume that it's basic functionaly is similar to MySQL.

  • How to make Lion Server alert a user of new calendar event on his iPhone?

    Hi!
I'm trying to make the Lion Server alert / notify a user of new events that are added to his shared calendar... Using my own iPhone, I can add and edit events on his calendar and he can see them in iCal on his iPhone, but only if he manually launch the app. What I'd like to achieve is to have the app send out an alert--like it would with reminders and apps like that--every time I add or edit an event on his calendar.
ps. Push notifications are turned on in the Server App.
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • Mac OS X Server 4.0: User & Group Accounts

I've bind Mac OS X server to AD, and I can see AD Users and Group accounts.  It seems that all other services such as Profile Manager requires Open Directory to run.  With Open Directory running, could I continue to use AD accounts instead -without having to recreate the wheel of a whole new set user accounts and  groups?  -So really assign AD accounts or groups to Server services.
    Thanks in advance!

You should not have to do anything the user/group import should be automatic and you should not have to manually create any accounts and it does onging syncs automatically but I do not know how often.
Once you are install and connect to profile manager all the accounts should show up just by clinking on users or the groups icons and they will work with that. You should not need to mess with them in the actual server application Although I would assume the other services all ink into the OD directory I don't know exactly how services like email, file sharing or VPN work as we have other more full featured better scaling services for that like MS Exchange for email/calendar and Cisco VPN.
We are only using OD, Profile Manager and Software Update.
Just a note I am using Server 3.2 on OS 10.9.5 if you are using Server 4.X your mileage will probably vary slightly as I am not sure what the areas of major change are.
