Reinstalling Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and system is locked

I am trying to reinstall Tiger because my G4 Powerbook was crashing. The first disk loaded fine but after the sytem restarts, it does not ask for the second disk and is locked up on the start page with the apple icon. I have restarted and reinstalled the first disk and I still have the same problem. Any suggestions on what to do?

Hi leevickers
Have suggested elsewhere that you try using later version Nokia_N96_isync_plugin_1v2.dmg dated 19 September 2008

Is it possible to reinstall Mac OS X Lion on MacBook and then use Time Machine to restore to the previous backup I made before reinstalling Mac OS X Lion?

My MacBook was not normally booting up. It would turn on, make the Apple startup noise, and the bottom loading bar would progress just a little bit, then my MacBook would shut down. I tried rebooting it many times and the same thing would happen, it would just shut down. Then, I read that I can reset the PRAM (by holding Option+Command+P+R after the Apple startup noise comes). That worked, but now I get a screen that asks me to choose one of the 4 options (see:  http://images.macworld.com/images/article/2012/07/lionrecoveryutilities-289404.j pg). I choose Restore From Time Machine Backup, but it progresses to 17.6% and gets stuck there forever. I tried doing it again, and it got stuck at 17.6% again. That is why I am asking if I should just reinstall Lion, then restore a previous backup on the fresh new Lion?

  • Printer Driver for HP Photosmart 7520 for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.3 and 10.5

I just purchased a new HP Photosmart 7520 printer.  One of my Macs at home is an iMac G5 that is running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.  It connects to the HP printer via Wi-Fi.  HP does not provide drivers for Mac OS 10.4 for the Photosmart 7520 printer.  I tried all sorts of old HP drivers and finally found one that worked, so I figured I would post here to help out anyone else who is trying to solve the same problem.  The driver download you need is the OS 10.4 driver for the Photosmart C7250 All-In-One printer.  Here is the link to the download page:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-55650-2 &cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=219&product=3382185&sw_lang=
After downloading and installing the drivers, I ran the HP Printer Setup Utility.  It was not able to detect my printer.  I had to go to System Preferences on my Mac and add the printer manually in the Print & Fax control panel.  The Print & Fax control panel was not able to auto-select the correct driver to use, so I selected "HP" from the "Print Using" drop-down list, and then selected "HP Photosmart D7400 Series" from the "Model" list.  That worked for me.  Good luck!
According to the driver download page, this driver will work for Mac OS X v10.3.9, v10.4 and v10.5

Thank you very much, I just bought this printer without paying attention to the compatibility of my Imac. Thanks to you, I just install it without too much difficulty. Thank you again.
Merci beaucoup, je viens d'acheter cette imprimante sans faire attention à la compatibilité de mon Imac. Grace à vous, je viens de l'installer sans trop de difficulté. Encore merci.

  • Fresh Install of Tiger and System Check?

What is it that people are talking about when they say they receive their mac and then do a fresh install of tiger? Can somebody give me the how's and why's for doing this?
Also, being new to mac, I'm not sure how to check my mac to ensure everything is running smoothly. What are the system checks that one can do through tiger to ensure you didn't receive a dud.
    Thanks

All Macs are shipped with a preinstallation of mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). The fresh install is useful for two reasons…
    1) It allows you to erase the drive and zero the drive. This gives the software an opportunity to map out bad blocks on your drive, if any, what can cause issue later on. This is more for the slightly paranoid, like myself.
    2) It enables an opportunity to do a custom installation which might be desired for reason like space savings etc.
The way to do is rather simple, insert your installation DVD and restart holding down the c key. It will then boot off the DVD and start off the installation process. One trick though is that when you are asked which hard disk to there is an option button at the bottom of the screen which allows you to erase the drive before the installation. You select thing if you want to do a completely new installation.
By the eay, to zero out the drive you need to launch Disk Utility and do it there. You can select it from the menus. You should do this as soon as you can BEFORE you select which disk to do the installtion on.

  • IPhoto Library won't load after reinstalling Mac OSX

I have reinstalled mac i was having some problems and i am a newbie in mac so i tought a clean install would be good at that point
After reinstalling i had my user folder backed up i moved the files back to their original place, and organized everything because it was messy, and then started a timemachine backup on an external drive
    so in short:
    i reinstalled mac
restored my iPhoto Library to the Pictures folder
Updated everything to the latest version ( since the photo library was created with the latest version )
when i tried to open iphoto it stayed reloading for an hour then i gave up and searched online
my pictures are all there i can copy them and start a new library but that is not what i want
i want my events as i sorted them i want my faces as i sorted them i spent a lot of time making these pictures as they were
    please help
    Things i already tried:
    vacuuming the *.db sqlite files
removing the faces.db so that if the faces are the problem i would know
    tried removing all *.db files
tried to import my photos to a new library but that is not what i want
right now i have 2 libraries, a new one wih ****** event names
and the old one that is corrupt

Using your original library try the following:  make a temporary, duplicate copy of the library and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your Home/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Is there an application to convert VOB files to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger

Is there an application to convert VOB files to Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, and if there is how do you convert.

VOB files are video files.  Tiger is an operating system.  Converting video files to Tiger frankly doesn't make sense.  Can I convert a Beethoven symphony into a toothbrush?
What is your actual goal in this?  You can play VOB files with VLC, and there is still a Tiger version of that.  Converting to another format is harder since usually when you are working with VOB files you are doing higher end video editing.
If you goal is to convert commercial DVDs you have ripped, don't bother asking.  Discussing that is against the terms of use of this site since ripping commercial DVDs is illegal in the USA and some other countries.

  • Replacing Mac Mini Hard Drive with SSD, and New ML Install

I have a mid-2011 Mac Mini, and it has been running very sluggish, even when there are multiple free GB of RAM and the processor is only at 10 to 20% of capacity. I ran TechTool Pro 6 to do a scan of the whole machine, and it didn't detect anything out of the ordinary.
At this point I am guessing that it's probably a software issue. I have tons of processes running in the background all the time, and have installed hundreds of programs over the last two years, so it could be anything number of things that are somehow messing up Mountain Lion.
So, I would like to replace the 500GB internal hard drive with a 120GB SSD Drive (Samsung 840 Series), and put a fresh install of Mountain Lion on the SSD, put the 500GB in an external enclosure, and see if that fixes the problem.
Can someone explain the best way for me to do this, in a step by step list?
I can figure out how to accomplish each step, I just need some overall guidance as to how I should approach the whole thing.
    Thanks very much!
    Some other notes:
I have a 3 TB hard drive that I can use to back up everything on the 500 GB hard drive, but I'm assuming that time machine isn't the best way to back everything up, since I won't be able to restore the machine on the 120GB drive that I want to boot from.
Normally, I would get the internal 500GB down to 100GB of data, and then clone it on the SSD, and make the swap, but I'm assuming that cloning the drive will potentially replicate the source of the slowness, so I'm assuming that isn't the best way to proceed.

Here is my opinion and steps I would perform.
    Back up your system first.
Check the iFixit.com site for a guide of how to replace the drive. Review Steps 3 and 4 BEFORE you replace your drive.
If you have a USB thumb drive with the ML 10.8.3 installer, skip to step 6.
If you don't have a USB thumb drive with the ML 10.8.3 installer, download the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant and use a 1-4GB thumb drive to create a Recovery HD on the thumb drive you can boot from. Skip to step 6.
If you have neither of the above, after replacing the drive, restart into Internet Recovery by pressing/holding the Command+Option+R keys. Since you have a mid-2011, Internet Recovery will ONLY allow you to download and install Lion since that's what probably came preinstalled on your system.
After you replace your drive and you are booted into the OS X Utilities Menu from one of Steps 3-5, select Disk Utility and format your new drive as Mac OS Extended-Journaled with the GUID partition table.
Go back to the OS X Utilities Menu and select Reinstall Mac OS X.
After the download and install of OS X you can run through the setup creating your user account (same as you had on you old drive).
If you were able to install OS X ML, skip to step 11.
If you installed Lion, you will have to login to the App Store and download/install your purchase of ML.
Run Software Updates to bring your OS X up to date.
Now you can restore any data files and apps that will fit onto the new drive from Time Machine. Enter Time Machine and navigate to your last backup to view the /Applications folders and your user folders (e.g Documents, Downloads, Music, etc.).
For your email, you can open Finder then press the Option key to see your user Library folder in the list. Select it to open it then enter Time Machine again and navigate to your last backup so that your user Library folder is opened in Time Machine. Copy your Mail folder to your Desktop so you can copy it back to your current user Library.
    I think that's it.

Here is information on "partitioning" ...
Use Disk Utility to partition a disk into sections, or "volumes," each of which works like a separate disk. You might want to partition a disk so that you can have different versions of the Mac OS, or organize your information in a logical manner.
Partitioning a disk erases all the files on the disk. If you have any files on the disk you want to save, be sure to make a copy of them on another disk before you partition the disk.
You cannot partition the disk that you started up from. If you want to partition the startup disk, you must restart your computer using your Mac OS X Install disc, as described below. Because partitioning will erase your hard drive, you should back up your hard disk before proceeding.
To learn more about using Disk Utility, open Disk Utility, in the Applications/Utilities folder, and choose Help > Disk Utility Help.
    To partition your startup disk:
Insert the Mac OS X Install disc and restart the computer.
When you hear the startup tone, hold down the C key until you see the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
When the Installer appears, choose Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your disk from the list, and click Partition.
Select how you want to partition the disk and any options you want, then click the Partition button at the bottom of the window.
    Quit Disk Utility.
When the Installer opens again, you can install Mac OS X on one of the partitions.
If you want to use another disk as the start-up disk, choose Utilities > Startup Disk and choose it.
Also, Disk Utility can tell you exactly how much available drive space you have. Launch DU, in the panel on the left select MacintoshHD. (Don't select the drive manufacture name above it).. now, look at the botom right side of that window where it says; Capacity - Available.
Another quick way to check available hard drive space is to open any Finder window, look at the bottom of the window, it will have the information there.
And, click a clean spot on your Desktop, you'll see Finder in the Menu. Then click View/Show View Options. When the pane opens, click "Show Item Info".
Now look over at your Hard Drive icon, under it will be that information all the time. Easy way to keep an eye on it.

  • ICal doesn't install correctly when reinstalling Mac Tiger OS X

I have been trying to help my dad with his Mac. This weekend we went ahead and wiped out the hard drive and reinstalled Mac Tiger OS X. When it came to installing Disk 2 (he doesn't have a DVD) it said error installing iCal, and we had to restart and install Disk 2 again. This happened about 7 times and we gave up. In the Log Viewer Mac say the iCal files are too big, and the second line mentions that some iCal file are written incorrectly.
I was wondering if we can start all over again and begin with Disk 1 or skip installing iCal.
    Can someone help us please?!?
    Thanks!
    Bernie

If the computer isn't connected to the Internet, download the Pacifist dmg file on another machine and then transport it to the computer where you are trying to install iCal to. If you download it on a PC, don't attempt to open the downloaded file on the PC.

  • Reinstalling Tiger and updates

I have the original Mac Mini with Panther disks. I bought the retail disks for Tiger and upgraded. I also installed all the updates. In the meantime, my boarder has been using my Mini. He will be leaving at the end of April. I feel that I should reformat and reinstall the OS. I already know how to reinstall from the Tiger disks and then the other software from the original disks. My question is: Will I have to install all the updates in order or just the last one for the OS and also the other software updates? Thank you.

About the boarder, he has been running an online "business" selling HDTV's and downloading a lot of files and also created some of his own. I found out that he is not completely honest in his dealings, won't pay his bills promptly, etc. And, he also owes me money. That is why I asked him to leave. I would rather reformat to get rid of all his stuff than to try to search and find everything. It's kind of like reformating and reinstall before you sell a computer.
I may just do the reinstall and let Software Update do the rest, and see what happens.
    Thank you for the responses.
PS While he has been using the computer, a lot of stuff has been changed, he has tried updates but didn't have the admin password. I would just rather do a reinstall.
And I appologize if this may seem like a rant about the boarder.

  • Reinstalled Tiger and now my iTunes library won't open.

Hi. I reinstalled Tiger and now my iTunes library won't open. And I can't install the latest 10.5 version of iTunes on this Mac. How do I get an older version of iTunes that will run this library? Any other thoughts? Thanks!

This is an issue alot are facing rightnow because the quicktime bundled with itunes is more "Up to date" for now than the stand alone is. Even when its removed some of its more updated registery keys are left behind.
GO here and follow ALL steps for removing itunes and quicktime, apple updater and ipod updater EXCEPT DO NOT install itunes til you get to the bottom of the page http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976

  • My volume isn't recognized when reinstalling Mac OSX Tiger

I am reinstalling mac osx on my mac book black, because I got a folder with a question mark whenever I boot up my computer. When I'm installing the disks there's no volume to install mac osx. What do I need to do?

From the Tiger installer you need to open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. On the left side, see whether your hard drive shows up. If it doesn't, your hard drive has likely failed and you'll need to purchase another one or take your macbook to a service provider to have it replaced.
If it shows up, you should try to repair it or reformat it, depending on whether you're worried about the data that's on it.

  • Removing OS 10.4 (Tiger) and Reinstalling OS 10.3 (Panther)

I would like to remove OS 10.4 (Tiger) from my computer and replace it with the original OS 10.2.7 that came with my PowerMac G5. But when I put the Software Install & Restore disc it say's that there is a newer version and will not let me continue the installation.
I am doing this because I cannot get Final Cut Pro 5 to capture on with Tiger, and i could with OS 10.3.9, but when I go to Reinstall Panther it says there is not an earlier version of OS X and it too will not let me continue.
That's what I'm up against. If you could direct me to the Folder where the OS 10.4 is installed on my hard drive that would be wonderful (without deleting essential files).
    Thank you very much.

    Brittney:
The article Mac OS X: How to reinstall a prior version has suggestions to get you started.
My suggestion would be for you to be sure that you have your Users Folder backed up. Then do a complete reformat and re-install of Panther or Jaguar. The following step-by-step assumes you are installing Panther.
Formatting, Partitioning Zeroing a Hard Disk Drive
Warning! This procedure will destroy all data on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure you have an up-to-date, tested backup of at least your Users folder and any third party applications you do not want to re-install before attempting this procedure.
Boot from the install CD holding down the "C" key.
    Select language
Go to the Utilities menu (Tiger) Installer menu (Panther & earlier) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select Partition tab in main panel. (You are about to create a single partition volume.)
Select number of partition in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
(Note: 1 partition is normally better for an internal HDD. External HDDs usually have more than one. See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD.)
Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    Select Erase tab
Optional: (Select the sub-volume under Manufacturer ID (usually Macintosh HD).
Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
Select on Security Options button (Tiger) Options button (Panther & earlier).
Select Zero all data. (This process will map out bad blocks on your HDD. However, it could take several hours. If you want a quicker method, don't go to Security Options and just click the Erase button.)
    Click OK.
    Click Erase button
    Quit Disk Utility.
Open installer and begin installation process.
Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
Check box to install X11 (Tiger) BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
    Proceed with installation.
After installation computer will restart for setup.
    After setup, reboot computer.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
    Connect to Internet.
Download and install 10.3.9 Combo Update.
    Computer will restart after updates.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
Select First Aid in main panel.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions.
Please post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.
