Reinstalling Mac OS X Server 10.6 - need to preserve settings
I need to reformat the system drive on my Mac OSX 10.6 server, and reinstall the OS. I have exported the Users & Groups from Workgroup Manager, exported the Preferences and plist from Server Admin. Is there anything else I need do to preserve the same network environment after the reinstall? How do I maintain DNS and Open Directory settings?
Copy the entire boot disk out to an external disk using Disk Utility — clone the boot disk to an external disk once or twice — wipe the boot disk, and then tell 10.6 to migrate the settings in during the installation.

How to reinstall mac os x server on mac mini 2011
Hi
i need to help
Can i Reinstall "Mac osx lion server "on my MACMINI 2011Then you will need to boot to the Recovery HD partition included on the internal drive when Mt Lion was installed. To do that at startup hold down the Command+r keys and that will boot the computer from the recovery HD. Once that starts use Disk Utility to Erase the Macintosh HD partition. Once that finishes exit DU and select Reinstall Mac OS X and Mt Lion will be downloaded from the internet and whenn that finishes downloading the install will start. Have the Apple ID and password you used to originally install Mt Lion. And it is best to Wire the computer to your internet router, Ethernet cable from computer to router. You can use WiFi but if for some reason the WiFi drops out you will have to start over from the beginning with the Mt Lion download.

Reinstall MAC 10.4 server OS
OK I have a problem. I just took over a iMAC G5 (stock server) that was running MAC OSX 10.4 server.
The issue is the person who ran this server is no longer with the company and I don't have the admin/root password. I don't mind reinstalling the OS, but I am having a problem getting it to install. I have both the install DVD and 4 install CD's that came with the server. The issue is I can't get it to boot from trying either the DVD or disk 1 CD. I am somewhat new to MAC (I know Linux and Windows very well) but I have tried holding the C key down right after the music ends and until the apple symbol appears.
I can hear the DVD drive running with either of the disks and it sits with the round progress meter running then comes up to gray circle with a line through it. If I take the DVD or CD out, it will boot up to the login screen, but I don't have a admin/root login account or password. Can anyone help?
iMAC G5 Mac OS X (10.4) ServerWell I do not have any acount that works on the server. I believe the guy just deleted all user accounts.
As far as holding the Option (alt) key to select which drive, I tried that and selected the DVD, still just has the little progess wheel for about 2 minutes then the gray circle with the line through it. I let it sit like that for 4 hours so something is not right.
Great I didn't want to have to take aprt this nice monitor (everything is built into the monitor) but when.why would the Bios password need to be set. wouldn't it come up to a screen saying to input the BIOS password before it even tried to read the DVD drive?. -
hi, i have macbook pro early 2011 with having installed latest OX, i want to format my Hdd and reinstall os again to fix speed issues, can i able to install os free of cost again, or i have to buy it again, please advise me, thanks
Re-downloads under the same Apple ID are free. Just do the following:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
Installing iWork on Mac OS X Server
I've installed my copy of iWork '06 on Mac OS X Server because I need to be able to read some Pages files on the development box. It installed fine (no errors) but when I try to launch Pages I get weird behaviour from the App. It's screens won't render or when it does bring up the pages document window it is not usable.
Does anyone know if you are supposed to be able to run iWork on Mac OS X Server? (since the install did not stop it)Ok. I've did a bit more debugging. Console shows the following when you launch Pages.

The Pages main document window does not show automatically. It seems to have problems raising it. Any clicks into the pages window or attempts to use it just show repeats of the above logs. From those messages I guess I will have to assume that the Server version of Mac OS X does not have some of the libraries needed by Mac OS X. Boooo!!!
Now I don't have any non-server Mac OS X machines here. Any know any apps that can convert Pages or Keynote files to Word or NeoOffice readable formats? -
Can somebody please explain how to format and then reinstall Mac lion10.7 without cd
can somebody please explain how to format and then reinstall Mac lion10.7 without cd
You will need either an Ethernet or Wifi Connection to the Internet - USB Mobile device is not supported.
If you already have Lion installed you can boot to Recovery with Command R and use the Disk Utility to erase the Macintosh HD and then reinstall the OS from the Mac OS X Utilities.
You will need the Apple Id used for purchase if the Mac did not ship with Lion installed originally.
If you want to repartition the HDD you can use the Recovery Disk Assistant to make a recovery USB drive
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848
As Always - Back up the Mac before erasing unless you are confident there is absolutely nothing on the mac that you might possibly need later.
If the machine is a 2011 build or later you might be able to boot to Internet Recovery with Command Option R -
HT4718 cant fint a disk to reinstall mac osx lion
After trying to restart my Mac several times, went to the internet option to recover and truing to reinstall mac OS X lion. However once I click reinstall it asks me for a destination disk but there are none showing up. Help!
Your drive is either corrupted or has failed.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
If you do not find your drive listed in the Disk Utility sidebar list, then it has failed. If you can complete the above, then restart the computer and see if you can restart properly. If you cannot, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X

Need to update from MAC OS X server 10.4.11 to MAC mini server, any tips?
Hello I am having issues to migrate from a Mac OS x server version 10.4.11, processor 2GHZ PowerpcG5, to a brand new mac mini server running mavericks.
I been reading posts in the communities saying that I will need to get a snow leopard first(?) can I get MAC OS X snow leopard, or it needs to be MAC OS leopard server?
Thanks in advance.Hello,
I do not know for certain, but what little experience I have with Server, my guess is that you'll have to get 10.6 Sever.
It's not available online, but might still be had by calling Apple & asking for... Part Number: MC588Z/A
Or, you might repost in one of these areas...

Reinstalling Mac OS X Problem. Can't lose information. Need quick response!
Okay ,so I recently had a software problem with my mac, and I went to the apple store and the genius told me I need to reinstall mac os x tiger, and it wil work. WEll I put the disc in and he gave me specific instructions on how to keep all my documents, movies, pictures, etc. He told me that when I get to the screen wherer it asks me to choose a harddrive to install it, I need to click "options" and make sure "preserve network settings and users" is checked, but when I got there it was gray, and unclickable. I only have 17 gigs of space left, and that may be the reason, but I don't know... I don't want to click "archive and install" and not click what he told me, and click continue, cause if I seriously loose all my information, I will die. I was thinking about clearing out my harddrive somehow, but Ithe genius told me that 17 gigs was DEFINATELY enough. I don't know what todo
If you have a 250GB drive, 17 GB is right on the border of too little.
I'm not sure if I understand whether you have actually tried to reinstall? Have you inserted the disc and gone to options>archive and install>preserve settings?
I wasn't suggesting you partition your main drive, just an external one.
Why is your computer not working? Have you discovered what its problem is? Have you run the Hardware Test from your install disc?
Lots of questions, but it's hard to solve a problem without all the pieces of the puzzle being there

I have Dell XPS with Quad core Intel CPU, 4 GB RAM and 500GB HDD + 500GB RAID. I really want to install Mac OS X Server on it but I can not find where to buy OS X Server and I'm not sure that it suitable to my XPS, I'm afraid that is not acceptable to install. Anyone have idea about this please give me some information, thank you.
Hello Benz_KU,
I am afraid you won't be able to install Mac OS X server on you Dell computer. There are technical reasons for that as well as legal reasons: according to the "Software License Agreement for Mac OS X Server":
"This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Mac OS X Server software (the “Mac OS X Server Software”) on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time."

If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.

How to reinstall OS X Lion Server
I'm newbie os x admin . I bought new Mac Mini 2010 with Lion Server. I want to do RAID 0 with my HDD.
I make image for Recovery Partition. Then format partition and do RAID 0.
I setup with Mac OS X Lion 10.7 GM build 11A511
I success to install but .... No Lion Server.
I try to check Mac Store but I found I need to buy Lion Server License ?
These is my Question
1. Lion Server that pre-install with Mac Mini is not license version or not?
2. Should I restore from recovery partition and get Lion Server from them ?
3. How I make recovery DVD or anything that easy to reinstall ?
Thank You very much. The 2010 Mac mini Server did not come with Lion Server, it was shipped with Snow Leopard Server. To go from Snow Leopard to Lion is a paid upgrade, not a free update. Up until Snow Leopard there was a SL client OS and a SL Server OS. Now Lion Server is an add-on purchase to the Lion client. So you must buy and install the Lion client, then the second step is to buy and install the Lion Server add-on. You purchase both Lion and Lion Server through the Mac App Store.

You cannot install Mac OS X Server Update on this volume. (10.5.6)
I hope someone can help!
I started with 10.5.5, but was having lots of problems with MobileMe. I have downloaded 10.5.6 which I have heard is more stable but it won't allow me to install it with the following error message "You cannot install Mac OS X Server Update on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." I have then downloaded 10.5.7 which installs fine but does not fix my original problem and I know it is less stable that 10.5.6. I have tried to install 10.5.6 again but same problem. Any ideas of what I have to do to my HD to make it happen?
The main problems I am having with MobileMe is registering the computer (it wont happen), syncing (it wont happen because the computer isn't registered), and publishing iweb updates.
Thanks, JYou downloaded the wrong updater version. You downloaded an updater for OS X Server but do not have OS X Server installed, hence the error. The 10.5.6 Combo Updater is here.
You will have to provide more information about the problem you are having with MobileMe. And, you should login to your MM account online so you can post your problem in their specific forums.
Before you install a system update I suggest you see the following:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a bootable backup of your current working system:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
C. Important: Please read before installing
1. If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
D. Download and install update(s):
1. Use Software Update, or
2. Download standalone updater(s). -
Used Mac OS X server no name or password
Hello! I had purchased a used MAc OS X server, and it did not come with the Name or password. Any way to change or bypass?
Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1. If you don't own another Mac
a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
3. Partition and install OS X
a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
4. Other issues
a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like. -
Upgrade from Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 to Snow Leopoard
I need to know how to Upgrade from Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 to Snow Leopoard. I just need to get the 29.00 Snow Leopard? no the 499$. just one server and no clients to him.
thanksYou cannot use the standard desktop Snow Leopard upgrade on a machine running any flavor of OS X Server. There is a lot of 'under-the-hood' functionality that would not take well to attempting this and could render you with a dead Mac until you reinstall the original OS.
If you wish to keep the Server functionality, the Snow Leopard Server upgrade ($499) is the only option.
If you wish to ditch the Server functionality and use the standard desktop version, you would need a copy of the desktop version of OS X 10.5 Leopard and the ($29) Snow Leopard upgrade. Apple does sell both 10.5 and the Snow Leopard upgrade in a combo bundle.
