Reinstalling mountain liom on macbook air 2012 takes much time?

Is This normal? Im currently reinstalling os on my secondhand macbook air 2012. It will took almost 2 days. Will this be just fine? Letting the macbook turned on for 2 days? Does this wont overheat the macbook? Or damage its parts?
Or this wont really take 44 hrs. Im also using the wifi connection, my normal download rate is 80-120 kbs/secs in when downloading in safari.
Or what if ill cancel this and connect to another network connection but im also worrying if download stops.

You need to be able to download just over 4 GB. If your connection speed is only 80-120 Kbps, that's quite slow and it will take a long time. Of course, it also may not take quite as long as it's predicting... Early time estimates in things like that can be quite inaccurate.
You should be able to safely cancel and try on a faster network, or you could just leave it running. The latter will not cause the machine to overheat unless the machine has a hardware problem already.

  • Impossible to reinstall Mountain Lion on Macbook Air

Hi! Recently my mid 2011 air started crashing safari and then firefox. As per the forums I deleted add-ons and made sure that the latest software was downloaded from the app store. The 3 days ago the computer crashed and would not restart. It would not allow me into recovery either with an icon and contact apple support (World symbol with a warning ! and apple.com/support - 6002F). So...I installed 10.8.3 on a 1TB extenal hard drive and downloaded the installer program also (using my old Macbook pro). I then used this as a boot disk for the Air which was fine and I was able to then erase the Air's hard drive reformat (uncludind reducing the size of the main partition by a couple of gigs - as a support blog recommened. Then I was able to use the restore function form the external hard drive to try and do a web based reinstall of 10.8.3 - alas it spent 40mins downloading and then when I tried to install the OS it said it was corrupted and so I repeated that 3 more times to no avail (def of stupidity). Next I tried using the ext boot to load up and then downloaded 10.8.3 from the app store and then install it on my clean SSD (I had made sure that the disk did not need to be repaired) . Nope no joy here again an eternity download it and then the installation but at the end it just did not complete the install with some rediculous time to complete of 36hrs...eventually getting to 55mins then hung indefinitely. Having done this a few times with the same result I tried downloading a new 10.8.3 from the app store (while the computer was runing of the external boot drive) same result installation could be not completed.
Next I trieved my dusty snow leopard installation disk from a drawer and tried to use an external DVD drive to install this old OS with the hope that I could update later. Nope! Without the boot HD attached: the computer would not detect the ext drive...on restarts I pressed c button I held the alt button down - nothing the drive would fire up (PS I had checked the drive and disk worked on my MacBook and it did) and then shut down and the computer reverted to a grey screen with a pretty white apple logo! Next I tried booting up with the ext hard drive and installing snow leopard to the clean SSD - nope apple says no - you're not allowed do that while running snow lion as a boot disk! I'm 2 days at this now! I live in Ireland so there are no "genius" bars - in case that is a suggestion.
Currently I'm copying the contents of the Snow leopard disk to my clean SSD drive (having booted in Mountain Lion) for a hoot to see if the computer may boot directly from its own hard drive - I doubt this but I'm getting desperate. When that doesn't work my final throw will be to erase the ext hard drive and try install Snow leopard on it and use that as the boot drive then maybe Mr Apple will allow me to install Snow Leopard on the SSD!?
    Someone please help!

OK last evenings efforts were futile!
Thanks for the replies but as I said there is no apple store with in Ireland with a guru bar (whole country!) therefore not an option! Using my boot disk I can get into recovery and it will allow me to download M/L (again for 30-40mins) then it will not install it properly! I have tried some other options today including deleting the app store cache with the reg command: open $TMPDIR../C/ - didn't help my "This Copy of the Install OS X Mountain Lion Application can’t be verified". I just can not understand why it will not just let me reinstall software I have paid for on a computer I have bought...especially as it allowed me to creat a boot disk with that same software (which I am now using to type this!).
ANy further help would be hugely appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Hi. I am going to be buying a macbook air 2012 soon with 4 GB of RAM and wondering how much memory space does norton AV take up and does it drastically slow down the mac. Thanks a lot :)

    Hi
I am going to be buying a macbook air 2012 model with 4 GB ram soon. I was wondering how much space (memory) does Norton AV take up and does it drastically slow down the computer. Also, I am going off to uni so will predominantly be using the laptop for surfing and MS office.
    Thanks a lot

Sorry to disagree mende1.  In this age of email attachments and social networks, it is actually a good idea to have a good antivirus on your system. {I realize that this is a religious argument and I will say no more}.  With that said, the general concensus is that Norton AV is terrible. It is intrusive and uses up a lot of cycles.
There are a lot of better AV clients out there.  I use ClamXav which is free and uses the clamav antivirus that is open source.

  • How to reset my macbook air 2012?

hi,, my name is jovito ,,i have this macbook air 2012,, and i planning to buy the new version,, and my friend want to buy my 2012 air.. but before he buy this air,, he wants me to reset it first.. and i dont kmow how to.. please help.. thank you...

Before you sell or give away your computer, in addition to the steps mentioned in this support article, take these steps:
Run the Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics. The buyer will do this (or he should), and you don't want to be surprised by the results.
Reset the PRAM and the SMC, which might contain personal information.
If you set a firmware password, remove it by running Firmware Password Utility in Recovery mode.
If you activated FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, turn it off.
If you use Boot Camp, the partition must be deleted
If you created any other data partitions on the internal drive, remove them in Disk Utility.
Erase the data partition(s) with the option to zero out data. An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You can't legally or practically transfer any software downloaded from the Mac App Store to the new owner of the machine, even if it was free. That includes OS X, so if you upgraded to OS X 10.7 or later, you must reinstall  the original OS, either from the installation media, if applicable, or by booting into Internet Recovery (option-command-R at the startup chime.) If you installed from discs or a read-only USB key, deliver those to the new owner.
The new owner will have to repurchase the software, if need be, under his or her Apple ID. If you ever updated the bundled iLife applications (Garage Band, iMovie, and iPhoto) through the App Store, you can't transfer them either.
Remove the machine from your list of registered products. If it's still covered by an AppleCare Protection Plan, transfer the coverage to the new owner by following the instructions in the AppleCare Terms and Conditions (under the heading "Transfer of Plan.")

  • Macbook air 2012 Shutdown problem!!

Hi all! I have a problem with my Macbook air 2012. OS 10.9.5.
This morning my sound were not working so i rebooted my machine. And here the problems start. My macbook now goes into sleep mode after 5 Seconds! And when it does so, i have to unplug/plug magsafe to get it back on. Then another 5 seconds before it shuts down again. I have tried SMC and PRAM resets. I am not able to do a erase+reinstall because the Internett is lost every 5 seconds due to the black screen. However when i pressed OPTION+ON button to get into the reboot menu the screen didnt shut down. Until I clicked on Recovery, then it started again.  So, has anyone had the same problem? Any solutions? Is there a connection to the no-working sound? Help is extremely appriciated!  :-)
I can still charge my phone while the screen goes black, if thats helpful for you guys.

It will be longer for the first shutdown, but should be faster thereafter. But then how much longer is it? I have a couple systems where it takes at least 15 seconds to shutdown.

  • Problems with my external USB 3.0 (Toshiba) hard drive and Macbook Air 2012

I can't seem to get any help on this from Apple and I am tired of ti I have a new Macbook Air 2012 model and have several Toshiba external USB 3.0 drives. I did the Mountain Lion App Store 10.8.2 update and all of a sudden non of my drives are mountable or accessible. I've been in IT 16 years and have never seen anything like this. The drives are physically fine and I can see the mapped partitions on a Windows 7 machine just fine and even use HFS Explorer to view the directory structures. The data on these drives is extremely important to not only me, but also the DoD who I am working with on a major project. Now I can't get to my documents to edit them or pull down the virtual machines I setup for my labs.
I've done all sorts of research and googled myself to death. I even foudn the "missing because Apple pulled" 2.0 update to try and fix this issue. Whatever was done with ML 10.8.2 on these notebooks renders the USB ports useless. Does anyone have a solution to getting these drives to mount?

    I have the same issue.
I have two disks HDTC720XK3C1 (Portable Toshiba Hard Disk, USB 3.0 + 2.0, 2.0 TB). Purchased on the same date and same model.  One inexplicably stopped working.
When i connect the drive, the systems show an message that say:
"You need format the drive <x> before can you use it
Do you want to format it"
I attach the two pictures with the screen error and disk  managment.
Question for the group:  These devices seem not very reliable ? this type of error the warranty covers?  Sugestions ?
i think, that a backup tool should be secure. This is the 7th time I use it and the data is completely lost. Opinions?

I'm looking for a laptop that will last me a couple of years which is why I'm upgrading to SSD without losing performance. I usually game on my Mac so I want a laptop to handle that, handle programs in the background and writing or reading without losing speed, I also need a laptop that has fast boot time.
I will be using the laptop mainly for school and running programs such as iWork and mircrosoft office as well as websurfing and video streaming thanks for any advice.

I hope others pipe in with their comments, but the first suggestion is to visit your local Apple Store and try out the units. Trying them out can make a difference in your decision.
This is how I'd try to make sense of this:
    MBP 13 2012:
Solid all-purpose portable at a decent price, and even has a 240GB SSD. If you don't load it with tons to videos, this will more than fit your needs as a student and websurfer. A little heavier than the others here, but it's a solid package that's stable. Great if you need to use the CD/DVD.
    MBA 13 2012:
Also good, similar specs, notably lighter. Notes are easy to take, and easier to carry on long campus treks. If you're not near a power source, the battery life may be a concern. If you need a CD/DVD, you can connect it when you need it - but it's extra. Servicing a MBA is more difficult.
    MBR 15 2012:
Beautiful display, packed with performance. No DVD/CD drive, NVIDIA performance is unproven, kind of pricey, the first generation of a device; it's going to get better over time. Can't be serviced in any way by the user; the Apple Store is your only option. Now's not the best time to get the MBR.
    MBR 13 2012:
    Same comments.
I'd say the MBA is a good pick. Few moving parts, therefore more reliability. Low heat. You can always attach a CD/DVD drive via USB. Intel Graphics is solid; no problems there. Plenty of capacity for your needs. And the display is bright. MBA 13 or 11, IMO.

  • Why is my iPhone 5 S WiFi speed 50% slower than my MacBook Air 2012?

Why is my iPhone 5 S WiFi speed 50% slower than my MacBook Air 2012?

    Hello jagimc,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398
Wi-Fi disconnects, or signal strength is less than expected
Move closer to the Wi-Fi router (access point).
Check for sources of potential interference.
Remove any case, stand, or other accessories from your iOS device and see if signal strength improves.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
Note: This will reset all network settings including: previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords, recently used Bluetooth accessories, VPN and APN settings.
    Best of luck,

  • MacBook Air 2012 Severe Battery Drains While Sleeping

    Hi there,
This isn't any new but I've looked through all posts I could.
I got a refurbished MacBook Air 2012 in July. In the first 2 weeks it worked fine (or I was noticed).
Then I noticed the battery drains fast while the system sleeps.
I have done tests in the past weeks; almost 20% of battery drain after slept a day.
I have tried everything I could: turn off PowerNap, no wake from BT devices, erase and reinstall OS
    None of above helped.
I have tried to modify hibernatemode to 25 and it worked ok; 2% of battery dropped after 12 hours.
I took this to Apple in Taiwan and they told me they couldn't do anything about it because they think it's software conflicts which does't really have a solution but wait for OS updates. They did run a diagnostic and everything turns out to be fine.
I just did reinstall the OS again and I'll see whats going on tomorrow morning.
If still not getting better I will just use hibernatemode 25.
Anything recommandation is more than welcome.
    Thanks.
    My OS version is 10.8.3.

Tried hibernatemode to 25 and still not helpful at all.
Battery drained 8% after 10 hours of sleep while mode 25 should put my macbook air into deep sleep and consume very minimal power.

  • MacBook Air 2012 is very slow to start applications

    Hello!
    I have a MacBook Air 2012 128gb 4gb RAM OS X ML
I welled up deleting the file system that is responsible for the work of php, but it does not matter, then reinstalled with full formatting.
After reinstalling the protesting all the data and some applications have a long run.
When i click the icon jumps well, and so
    iPhoto 5-6 times
    Mail - 3 times
Notes and reminders to 3 times
before reinstalling to run immediately after you instantly ...
it is observed only in the native programs
such as Photoshop CS6, Things, Coda, Pages start immediately ...
For most applications perform no complaints, all the missiles, but that launch annoying ...
In what could be the problem?

  • Does the MacBook Air 2012 supports SDXC Cards?

Does the MacBook Air 2012 supports SDXC Cards?
    Thx

Hi! How are you? The reason why I'm here is to find out more about SDXC support/compatibility info on the macbook air 2012 and how to fix this nagging issue if it's fixable.
I had just bought a Sandisk extreme pro 64GB rated at 95mb/s for my Nikon DSLR. Unfortunately, MBA struggles to detect or mount my card, after a few sweats, it would mount, but then very slow to process and preview the images as "Thumbnail preview". Then, after a few more sweats, you can scroll through the thumbnails smoothly.
Streaming HD videos straight from the SD Slot is butcher chopping the beef. Video lags, stutters, chops, in otherwords, USELESS and a pain in the neck. So you just want to copy all the files to your macbook, and play from there. Copying files from SDXC to my macbook takes forever; writing is also another issue that take much more than forever!
I have a top of the line macbook air 2012 (i7, 8GB, 512) and I always thought it's a versatile reliable computer but now I'm very disappointed. On the other hand, doing the same things on my macbook pro 2010 is seamless. I also tested on my windows 8 desktop to be flawless as well.
Therefore, the memory card is not the problem. It's macbook air's sd slot that's a failure. I never thought spending $2,199 for a super computer would make me stress like this. In addition, the magsafe 2 is another failure in design. It always disconnects just by moving my macbook air from one spot of the table to another. Having it charged while on my lap gets on my nerves when it keeps getting disconnected! I hate Apple for doing this. If only there was a Windows notebook that surpasses Apple's design, I would never EVER buy Apple products EVER again.

    sberman Southern California
Pricing starts at US$999 at the Apple Store:
Current retail cost is $950 on same.
And if shes a student, she gets a big discount, POSSIBLY making the cost difference  0 $
That choice is a subjective one. However since the 11" base AIR is only $950, youre talking $110
For a $110 difference, the answer is absolutely unquestionably YES.
For $110 youre getting an awfully lot more,...... faster,... MUCH longer batt. life,... 802ac wifi,.. cooler running.
$110 cant buy that kind of "upgrade" anywhere, making the cost difference absolutely worth it.
    Again, your choice.

  • Problems on Mavercks on macbook air 2012

Since i updated my Macbook air 2012 to mavericks i am having some problems, my system freeze sometimes forcing me to restart by pressing the power button for 10 seconds.
Another thing i noticed, its that when i am using graphics aplications, like Final cut or games, me screen glitches a little, if i try to alternate between aplications, make zoom, or this kind of thing, and thats quite annoyng and a little scary, becouse every time look like my system its going to crash.
Id like to know if thats a probem that i can solve by myself, or it is a mavericks problem and apple may fix it in the next updates.
    Thanks a Lot

Make sure there's enough free storage space.
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
And try a Safe Mode boot.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
