Reinstalling moutain lion after upgrading to maverick

i recently upgraded to maverick but I'm trying to downgrade back to mountain lion but it won't let me....

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This will install the original version of OS X that was pre-installed when new. Hopefully, that will be Mountain Lion.

• Reinstalling mountain lion after upgrading to mavericks

I am in need to downgrade my current install of Mavericks back to the original install of Mountain Lion due to compatablity issues. One of my college courses software programs crashes alot under 10.9. A fellow classmate, still runs 10.8 on their 15' rMBP without any issues. I've attempted to do a "factory restore" but on the recovery HD, the only option of the reinstall appears to be Mavericks vice Mountain Lion. To complicate matters, my last known backup under 10.8 in Time Machine was no longer there. Any suggestions or solutions, if any, are greatly appreciated. Sadly, I had to resort to using my old Windows laptop for this course until the publisher issues a fix, in which, they say is coming soon.

If you can download the ML installer you can make a bootable install media by using:
http://liondiskmaker.com/
If your Mini came with ML you can also boot to Internet Recovery
OS X: About OS X Recovery
and it will install ML. Make sure you boot to Internet Recovery and not the Recovery Partition. If to the partition you will only get Mavericks.

• Do I need to reinstall MS Office 2011 after upgrading to Mavericks ?

Hello,
I have mid 2011 Mac Air. Do I need to reinstall MS Office 2011 after upgrading to Mavericks ?
Curious to know before upgrading.

You will at least need to apply the update. I believe that can be done before upgrading to Mavericks. If you have trouble, then as Tony T1 says, uninstall fully then reinstall, but I have had no issues o any of my Macs. Update applied to all.

• Mac Pro never sleeps after upgrading to Mavericks

Hi Folks
Just realised that after upgrading to Mavericks from Mountain Lion, my Mac Pro never goes into sleep mode after the time set for it in System Preferences > Energy Saver.
This never happened with Mountain Lion.
Any body here having the same issue?
FYI - This is a 2012 Mac Pro having duo 6-cores, 64 GB RAM, 1 x SSD and 3 x HDD.
Thanks you for your comments.

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article. That's the starting point for any further effort to solve the problem. Skipping any of those steps may mean that the problem won't be solved. Note that, as stated in the article, the computerwill not sleep if Internet Sharing is enabled.
Step 2
From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Accessibility ▹ Speakable Items: Off
Step 3
Select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Bluetooth ▹ Advanced...
and uncheck both boxes marked
Open Bluetooth Setup Assistant at startup if...
Step 4
Reset the SMC.
Step 5
Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
Step 6
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
Step 7
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

• After upgrade to Mavericks

after upgrade to Mavericks , I have now two long black strip on my monitor 30 inches , one at the top, and the other one at the buttom, the rest of the display is fine with Mav. desktop screen with menu bar and dock. Before with mountain lion everything was fine. I have 2 display . one apple 20 inche display with no black strip and a 30 inches LG Flatron W3000H with those 2 black strip. I losing i inch tall at the top and same at the buttom.I try to install maverick again ,same problem, try the display panel of course , no luck. help
Mario

I already try that , my largest resolution on the 30 inc is 2560 by1440.Not working.I mixed up , I actually upgrated from 10.6.8. When I boot from a 10.6.8 partition , I have no problem. But I realize that my 20 display can have 1680 by 1050 max and my 30 2560 by 1600 max. Then if I boot from 10.9 partition I am having the probem with the black strip and my 20 can max at 2560 by1600 and my 30 can max at 2560 by 1440 with the bars. I realize too that I do not have a menu bar on the 20 display, only on my 30. And when I do a safe mode boot 10.9 , the 2 bars are gone and I have a full 30 display. That workstation is a MacPro 2008 with ati HD 4870 512 k . I checked I did not found any updrate for the video cards.
On my other workstion that I upgrated from Montain Lion to 10.9 which it the latest 27 inc IMac with a second 30 inc Apple display I have no probem , no black bars and and I have a menu bar on both displays.By the way , before I bought the new Imac , I was working with the macpro with same video card and I had the two 30 inc display , running 10.6.8 with no problem.
I have another problem too that I post on the wifi section. Since upgrade to 10.9 on the macpro , the one with the bars , I lost my wifi icon on the menu bar. i went to Network pane and I do no see a wifi section, only ethernet, firewire, and bluetooth and I try to add another choice the dialog do not let me choose from a wifi. I owne a airport extreme 4 gen and when i open airport utility the airport ext is discovered but no wireless.
I work with pictures, with Lightroom 5 which I instal on the Imac 27, no problem. But I am waiting to install anything on the macpro in case I have to reinstall again 10.9 or if a 10.9.1 update could fix the problem.
Anybody with these two problem, the bars and the missing wifi
thanks Mario

• Animated gif in mail are not visible after upgrade to mavericks

Hi,
I use a animated gif in my signature in mail. This gif was playing normally (like a animated gif) in mountain lion when I writes a new message. After upgrading to mavericks I can't see the animated gif playing. I just see the first frame. However when I send a mail to my iPad using iOS 7 the animated gif is playing normally.
Thanx for every answer!

I'm having this issue as well — I can no longer send animated gifs in Mail with Mavericks (10.9.0). The image retains its full image size and remains a gif format, but does not play, just sits static. This also affects forwarding animated gifs — which play fine in the mail window — they are static in the compose window and are sent static.

• Stuck in login window after upgrading to Mavericks

I am unable to login with my (admin) account after upgrading to Mavericks yesterday.
This was very unfortunate considering that I didn't backup my data !!
On reboot (I do not remember whether it was the first or second time) I couldn't login anymore as I usually did.
I tried different procedures (entering secure mode, repair permissions, reinstall 2 times Mavericks) but cannot solve the stuck.
Then I thought it could be a nice idea to create a new admin user and followed this instructions (http://www.hackmac.org/tutorials/how-to-create-a-new-administrator-account/).
After that I was able to login with the new user, I backed-up my data but I was still in stuck on login window with the old user.
I tried to delete
com.apple.loginwindow.plist
com.apple.recentitems.plist
from /Users/XXX//Library/Preferences/ and tried to restart but nothing.
Now I wonder how my old and important user can start working again.
Thank you very much.
Giuliano

Restart and hold down the Command and R keys during startup.
On top, in the Menu Bar click the Utilities item then select Terminal.
In the Terminal window, type resetpassword and hit Return.
The Password reset utility launches/
Reset password.
Restart

• Late 2007 15" MBP Very slow after upgrading to Mavericks

Hi guys,
this is my first post here. I look forward to learn and help others.
The reason of this post is, as outlined in the title, slow paerformance of my computer after upgrading to Mavericks. It was kinda slow from before but this time it's almost unbearable to use it. I used to be able to run VMWare with 2 XP and 1 windows server machines WITH JUST 2 GB OF RAM! Now I have 4 GB and can barely run a single virtual machine with XP and the cooling fans come on just by watching a video on youtube, which also makes performance take a dump.

Thanks in advance for any light shed on this.

I was reading about GeekBench in the discusions and decided to give it a go, although I was able to only perform the 32-bit tests, I got 1268 on the single-core score and 2187 for the multi-core score; I don't know how good or bad those numbers are. Wish I had a before and after reading but I read about it too late, when I had already erased several items.
I will appreciate any further input BEFORE I decide to reinstall the OS from scratch.

• Why did my mouse stop scrolling after upgrading to mavericks?

I have completely lost all ability to scroll with my Apple Magic Mouse after upgrading to Mavericks. Why did this happen? How can it be fixed? It worked fine with Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.

Everyone:
I was able to solve my own problem, after scouring the Internet looking for solutions. Sadly, the Apple Support Community was of no help.
Here's the full story:
I originally had purchased my iMac with Snow Leopard installed. I loved it just the way it was, and really did not ever want to upgrade. However, I've been around computers long enough to know that I would HAVE to do it someday, only because of the age old problem of wanting to run some new application in the future, but not being able to, becasue the app would only run on the latest version of OS X. I reluctantly upgraded to Mountain Lion less than a year ago, without too many problems -- nothing I wasn't able to fix fairly easily anyway. When Mavericks came out, with the "offer I could not refuse" price of FREE, I knew I would eventually have to install it.
So the day comes when I'm finally ready to install Mavericks. To get ready for that day, I did the following:
I ran CCleaner on Mountain Lion to clear out any old files accumulated. (No longer works in Mavericks)
Made sure my Time Machine backup was up to date
Cleared out gigbytes of old files off my hard drive, and archived them on an external USB drive
Made sure every single app on my iMac was fully upgraded.
Made sure Mountain Lion itself was fully upgraded!
I then set aside a full day for the upgrade, knowing full well how long it could take, even with a very fast internet connection. Eventually I worked up the courage to go to the App Store, and proceded to download Mavericks.
The update seemed to go smoothly enough, no problems that I noticed. So I finally get to the point where I can sign on to my iMac again, opened up the Chrome browser, and found out that my mouse was was unable to scroll. I then opened up Firefox and Safari, and found that I could not scroll pages on those browsers either. As a matter of fact, I couldn't scroll using my mouse no matter what app I tried. That feature was completely lost.
I went to ' System Preferences --> Mouse ' to look at the settings, and only the most basic settings were available: click and speed, nothing at all for scrolling or swiping. That's not good....
Looking to see if anything else was missing in System Preferences, I saw that there was no option for Blue Tooth at all. As a matter of fact, Blue Tooth was completely inoperative, and there was literally nothing I could do to make it work. The Mavericks upgrade had completely trashed Blue Tooth on my iMac. I have no idea how my wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse were even operational, Apple must have some sort of "back door" that keeps those two connected even when the entire Blue Tooth subsystem is off-line.
Since there was absolutely no way to fix this, given the damage done by the Mavericks upgrade, my only choice was to do a complete re-install of Mavericks. I did this by turning off my iMac, and then after turning it back on, I held down the command + R keys to initiate the "recovery" of my iMac, and re-installed Mavericks. There are screens the are displayed that walk you through the process, which is fairly easy and strait-forward.
This above process is a feature called OS X Recovery, and it has been present since Lion. Here's a link to an article that explains it more fully:
OS X: About OS X Recovery
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718
I did not know about this feature, but found out about it after doing various web searches in an effort to find a solution to my problem.
So, I basically ended up installing Mavericks a second time. This took hours to accomplish, but it worked. After the second installation, I signed on, and sure enough, Blue Tooth was back in operation, and my Magic Mouse worked without any problems what so ever. I had full scrolling ability in all my apps.
So OS X Recovery saved the day, at least for me.
I should note that before doing the Mavericks upgrade on my iMac, I had already performed the upgrade on a family member's MacBook, without any problems encountered at all. They were still running Snow Leopard, the orignal OS that came with their MacBook! Like me they were reluctant to upgrade, but eventually it becomes a necessary evil.
Here's hoping that this information may be of use to someone in the future.

• After upgrading to Mavericks, iPhoto does not work

I have an iMac early 2011, with dual hard drives. After upgrading to Mavericks, iPhoto and several other apps are no longer "installed". The following apps have a white circle with a line through it in my main Applications folder on my primary hard drive: Calculator, Chess, Font Book, iChat, iPhoto, Mail, Photo Booth, Preview, Safari, System Prefernces. Also, under the Utilities folder, these are inaccessible: Activity Monitor, System Information, Disk Utility.
I tried following this thread's advice: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5539268
I had iPhoto 9.3.2 on my main drive. I downloaded the 9.4.3 upgrade from here: http://support.apple.com/downloads/#consumersoftware
When I try to install, I get the following message: iPhoto 9.1 or later is required to install this update. Where did my software disappear to?
Every Apple upgrade so far has been a nightmare. A previous upgrade of iPhoto bricked the computer and had to bring it to professionals to fix. I am dreading the 10.9.2 "critical upgrade" for the OS that keeps poping up. The Mavericks upgrade also wiped out my Adobe Creative Suite install and several other apps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You need iPhoto ver 9.5.1 to be Maverick compatable.
Use the software update, look for the new app in your Applications folder along side your old versions of iPhoto. Drag the new icon down to the Dock.
Moving from 10.6.8 the old PowerPC apps are no longer supported. I believe Lion you could still run the Rosetta to keep the old ppc apps alive. No more with Mountain Lion and now Mavericks. Sooner or later you have to keep up with technology and keep apps up to date.

• Random restarts after upgrading to mavericks and then yosemite

I have a mid 2009 15in mbp. I noticed after upgrading to mavericks that I began to have random restarts and significant hang ups to the point of me having to restart it on my own. I would run disk utility and repair permissions. The mac would run okay for maybe a day or maybe an hour, then restart or hang up. I seem to have a pretty full hard drive and I for some reason thought it may be a failing hard drive. I purchased a new hard drive and restored a time machine backup to the new 1tb drive. I also added 2, 4gb sticks of ram. Things were going swimmingly for a week or so with yosemite installed and then the problems began again. It got to the point that the computer wouldn't even start. I threw my old hard drive back in, reformatted it, and reinstalled a back up. The mac is working now, but with the same kind of random kernel panics. I have done all of the latest software updates as well. I would like to put the other drive back in for shear volume alone, but don't seem to get anywhere when I try. Thank you for your time and consideration. Any help is appreciated. Here is an etrecheck as well.

• MacBook slow after upgrading to mavericks--still slow after reverting with time machine

After upgrading to Mavericks OS my 2012 MacBook became slower than ever before. My MacBook was freezing and the beach ball kept appearing. This seemed to be something a lot of people were experiencing with Mavericks, so after other suggested didn't work, I decided to just revert to Mountain Lion using Time Machine. But my mac is still slow--I now avoid using it because it's such a huge hassle. I have 8 gb of RAM, 5.5 gb of which is free. ~98 % of the CPU is idle. Have no idea how to get my computer back to how it used to be. Any suggestions?

Resetting SMC could solve the problem, if you didn't yet.

Or clean install of Mavericks could solve the problem.

• How to recover "Recovered Items" after upgrade to Mavericks

After upgrading to Mavericks (from Mountain Lion), I had to create a new user.
Then, after logging in, I noticed my Applications and users were missing.
After some searching in the Terminal, it seems all the items are in "Recovered Items". It's as if the upgrade process failed to put the items back in their place after installing the new OS version.
How do I get the system to "recover" this?

Ok I talked to support earlier and I went into my recovered files folder and you should have Applications, Library, Users (shortcut to Users) and if you go to Users, you should see your previous User folder with all of the documents, pictures and such in it! What I had to do is create a new account (admin account) in Users & Groups using the same name for the user directory as your previous one! It should say there is there already a folder under that name and you will want to tell it that you want to use those files! Once that is done, logout, login to your new account and your stuff should be there! Pretty much all you have to do is drag what applications you want from recovered files application folder to your new application folder and of course renter your keys! Your iTunes, iPhoto and Apple products should grab all your previous stuff!
