Reinstalling OS to fix h/w and s/w issues

Hello all,
I understand the general consensus is to reinstall the OS to fix the popping noises in iMovie transitions (which my iMovies suffer from). I also understand the general consensus is to reinstall the OS to fix pausing/skipping in movies burned on my superdrive (which DVDs burned on my Mini suffer from). My Mac Mini is only 7 months old and perhaps its burned 20 or 30 DVDs.
If reinstalling the OS is the fix then I’ll hold my breath and cross my fingers and do it. I asked the guys at my local Mac store "which files (other than data) I should back up before I reinstall?" Their response was rather vague until I suggested such files as network config files. Their reply: "uh, oh yeah, better find those". Me: “and the bookmark file”. Them: "oh yeah, good idea". After those brilliant answers I left the store.
Surely there must be a definitive list of config and other files that need to be backed up to save me hours of reconfiguration after reinstallation.
So two questions: Is anyone confident that reinstalling the OS will fix my Mac’s problems, or are there some less drastic measures I could try first? And if reinstallation of the OS is the only solution, does anyone have such a list of files to backup, or know of such a list they can point me to?
Thanks
Howard
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Howard, I would have zero confidence in the suggestion that a reinstall of the OS is the only way to resolve the issue - that sounds like a rather typically large sledgehammer to crack a rather smallish walnut sort of approach. I DO have confidence it would work, but only because in the process you'd delete any damaged file and replace it with a good one. Even so, it seems a bit drastic!
I've had my share of iMovie and iDVD issues (though interestingly, not on my mini but mostly on the G5), and the general conclusion I've come to is that many of the issues are caused by cache files. Macs rely rather heavily on these for reasonable performance, and it's not at all unusual for the system to pull up a lump of data from the cache rather than the actual file. In iMovie for example, it has been known to cause a clip to play even though it's been removed from the system, also causes odd transitions and noises, has made editing titles problematic in some iMovie versions, and caused issues with DVD projects.
There are useful tricks in iMovie that can help reduce some issues - things like using a blank title of the correct length instead of dragging a blank in the timeline, which helps prevent clicks/pops and noises as the next clip starts, but I've found that many issues can be fixed by cleaning cache files using a utility like YASU (downloadable from www.versiontracker.com). It's probably worth trying that first, before taking any more significant steps!

  • Found a FIX for MBR and GRUB GRUB2 ISSUES!

I like many other have had issues with Linux (Ubuntu), and the MBR modification and GRUB.
My tragedy went something like this. I wanted to install Ubuntu on a netbook without a CD Drive.
I put a Live Ubuntu CD in my computer and booted up.
I connected a Sata drive through my esata port.
I proceeded to install Ubuntu on the external drive.
Drive would not work on netbook,
Compute would not boot to windows 7.
    What really happened:
When I installed Ubuntu on the external drive, GRUB was installed on my primary hard drive on my laptop.
If the external drive was attached to the laptop, GRUB came up and I could choose what I wanted to boot to (windows worked fine). But, if that drive was not connected, it gave the error "Device not present", that was it.
    DONT DO THIS:
I tried to use a windows 7 dvd from another computer to "repair", didn't work, I think it recognized it was an OEM install.
I tried to use an XP install disk, got blue screen of death, and the computer would not boot, not even with external sata drive connected (now I was starting to sweat)
    What worked:
I used the live Ubuntu CD to access my windows drive and did an immediate backup of all important files, all 112GB worth...
I saw I could purchase a windows 7 CD to repair my computer for about $10 (tempting but didn't)
    Solution:
I want to my wifes computer: Start->Control Panel->System Security (click: Backup Your Computer)
On the left hand column click: Create System Repair Disk
    Create Disk.
Took the disk to my laptop and booted it. I was concerned that It said Toshiba, not Lenovo. I clicked on the language and it noticed the MBR was not correct and asked if it could repair it? I said Yes, then it gave me the option to reboot. I rebooted and removed the CD. Everything is working fine!
I hope this helps someone sort through the sea of informaton concerning GRUB and the MBR file. This solution is for so  many people, like myself have no windows 7 disk to boot from.
    Lewis.

I should also point out that all the files of my website are in the root folder of my FTP, not in root/Website_Folder_Here folder.

    and
    2. iTunes was not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes. Error 7 (Windows error 126).
Now I've checked the forums and followed the advice of uninstalling all Apple applications, rebooting, and reinstalling iTunes.
This is not working. I've tried installing as Administrator but doesn't make any difference at all.
There must be a way to fix this? I'm not a tech geek but I want to avoid having to take my laptop back to factory settings to sort this out.
    Thanks

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.

If you still have the receipt or other proof of purchase, you can ask Apple to send you the serial. Otherwise, bad luck mate.. Good news is, you can now buy Logic Pro 9 from App Store for just 199 USD

Ok so I cant open my Itunes due to Windows Error 2 and the message says to uninstall and re-install Itunes but I'm pretty sure that would wipe the library right? Is there any way to fix the problem and keep my library?

    Hi neffn!
I have an article for you that can help you go through that process of uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. If you have Windows 7, you will want to see this article:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1923
and if you are using Windows XP, you will want to reference this article:
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1925
Note that, as it says in those articles:
iTunes Store purchases or songs imported from CDs are saved in your My Music folder by default and are not deleted by removing iTunes. While it is highly unlikely that you will lose any contents of your iTunes Library when following these steps, it is always a good idea to ensure that your iTunes library is backed up. If you're unsure how to backup, see iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

When trying to launch ITunes I get an error message saying that application fail to start because MSVCR80.dll file not found. Reinstalling app may fix problem.

I've just (finally) managed to fix this problem today. I checked the Apple Support forums, and it seems a lot of people are having the same problem.
I rang the Apple Support line, and the very helpful man (thanks Alan!) talked me through it stage by stage. If you go to the following page on the internet: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376   it takes you through the process. WARNING - it takes a little time!
Basically, the first thing you have to do is go to your Program Files and double click on your iTunes folder. There'll be a number of files with the suffix .dll - you need to move all the .dll files from that folder to your desktop - you can simply click and drag them on the desktop..
Next, uninstall iTunes - go to Control Panel / Add/Rempve Programs and when the list comes up remove iTunes. This will take a few minutes... Then reboot your computer.
Next, go back to Control Panel / Add Remove and Remove - IN THIS ORDER -
    Apple Software Update
    Apple Mobile Device Support
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
    Reboot again!
Next, check in your Program Files that the iTunes folder is completely gone - if it has, great: if it hasn't, right-click on the folder and press Shift and Delete - it will say "Are you sure you want to completely remove the folder "iTunes"? Click on "Yes".
    Reboot!
Then go to the iTunes download page and voila! It should download iTunes without any problems... well it did for me.... Good luck!

  • Why can i not fix firefox hanging and unresponsive using firefox troubleshooting methods

    Hi
Every web page i open/use, Firefox hangs and becomes unresponsive. It does this 10 times or more while i am trying to browse. I have gone through every step in the troubleshooting issues one by one and several times. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox several times. I have checked CPU, RAM and every other three letters available.
It has hung, been unresponsive, and had white screen 15 times+ while i have been writing this.
I have had my computer taken away and looked at by computer techs, they say it is fine now. No viruses, relevant Malware and relevant security attached.
I use windows 7 premium. This has all just started in the past few months. Laptop is only 18 months old.

Have you tried to disable hardware acceleration?
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

  • All my check boxes and selection circles have disappeared. Uninstalled FF and reinstalled deleting all plug-ins, settings, and etc. IE works fine. What's messing with my boxes?

With recent update, all my check boxes and selection circles have disappeared. I tried to uninstall FF, reinstall, but nothing fixed it. When I run safe-mode, it's fine, but then no youtube or other internet fun stuff. Tried to update plug-ins but still all jacked up. any ideas? also, my side scroll bar screws up too.

Do you mean Firefox safe mode or Windows Safe mode?
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
If you mean Windows Safe-mode then check your security software.
