Reinstalling OS X - MBA original disk necessary?

I've just got a second-hand 1st-gen MBA, and so far love it. I want to wipe the drive & reinstall Leopard (10.5), but using Remote Install with a vanilla 10.5 install disk gets me as far as a grey screen on the MBA, with circle & diagonal line through it, and the activity spinner below it. This seems to go on forever (I gave up after half an hour).
I've read elsewhere on the forum that you can only use the original install disk that came with the MBA for remote boot. Is this correct? If so, will I be able to get the MBA install disk from Apple? (my 2nd-hand MBA didn't include any disks, and I assumed that as I had a vanilla 10.5 install disk, I'd be OK). Finally, does the same restriction apply for booting from the external MBA USB optical drive?
Thanks!

By Vanilla I am assuming you mean a Retail 10.5 disc. If so, it may not work because of the version. The Original MBA shipped with 10.5.1 installed; the second generation shipped with 10.5.5. Neither can boot with an OS version older than the one it shipped with. If your disc is 10.5.1 or above, however, you might be okay.
Insert the disc in the remote computer. Go to Applications>Utilities in both computers. Open the Remote Install Mac OS X application, and follow the instructions. If this works, great. (Also, you might want to consider getting the Ethernet adaptor, as the wireless install can take a VERY LONG TIME!):-) You can connect both computers by a cable directly—no need to go through a router.
If it doesn't you can likely call Apple and they can send you a replacement disc, for a fee.

A 2008 Mac won't have originally shipped with Lion. You need to install 10.6.8 on the computer, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to purchase Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases tab, and download it.

  • Any time I open a photo program the application freezes.  I want to reinstall OSX from the original disk and then restore my machine from time machine Will a restore from time machine only restore my Apps and data

Tried to post a question about restoring my i mac from time machine, but this new format makes no sense to me.  I want to restore my i mac from time machine after I reinstall the OS from the original disk.  Will a time machine restore only restore the applications and data or will it restore the current state of the OS.  My machine will not let me open any photo applications (aperture, I photo, NX 2) I have to force quit them every time I try to get some work done.

I bought a 160gb iPod classic every time I try to put music on my external hard drive only copy up to 1500 songs and then freezes Itune me and I can not close, asks me to restore the ipod as factory, and do nothing . I try to close the program and itune will not let me, I try to turn off the computer and I can not shut, I looked to see if the iPod disk errors and says it's okay. I restored it about 8 times and I've put music and videos but I always delete everything. I crushed and Selection Menu to enter diagnostic sistemade or ipod and I put the manual test where I enter the IO and q tells me everything is fine. I have already given several Format directly from the Windows 7 and anything either, I always delete everything from passing over 1300 songs and I congeal whole team. No longer have to think of this company because Apple gives no solution has this issue.
iPod classic, Windows 7, ME BORRA TODO Y SE CONGELA

  • Clean Reinstall/Must restore from original disks or can I use 10.4

Have pored thru the forums looking for my specific questions but haven't found them - so please bear with more clean reinstall questions ---
    1) Yes - I have to do a clean reinstall - much other discussion on other forums has said this is what needs to happen for my particular sick Mac situation - so I already know this....
    2) Have already used carbon copy cloner to back up entire hard drive, files et al to an external hard drive...
    3) Have iMac G4 - came with OS 10.2.3 - I do not need OS 9 anymore - haven't used it for 2 years, I have the newest Tiger disks and just got iLife 2006 - can I just use those to put my system back on? Or do I need to start from my original iMac Software Install and Restore DVD - and then add on the next versions from their disks till I get to Tiger? (I have all of them - Panther, Puma, Bobcat, Lynx - you name it... Steve Jobs is getting his money's worth out of me)....
    4) Someone told me I should erase my hard drive completely with disk utility first - and then do the clean install on a totally virgin hard drive - is this true? I want to do the absolute premium, totally best thing....
    5) Should I write down all the info in "About This Computer" first - like serial number etc - does the above option erase all of that?
    6) When I do a clean reinstall - should I name my computer and put in my user name and password etc exactly the way it was?
Thanks so much - I really have searched these forums and couldn't find the above -

    1) Yes - I have to do a clean reinstall - much other discussion on other forums has said this is what needs to happen for my particular sick Mac situation - so I already know this....
First off, there is no such thing as a "clean" reinstall. Maybe an erase and install as the rest of your post suggests:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607614
Secondly, a sick machine rarely needs an erase and install. I use it only to discover right away if there is a hardware issue with the computer as opposed to software.
    2) Have already used carbon copy cloner to back up entire hard drive, files et al to an external hard drive...
Have you tested to make sure the clone is bootable?
    3) Have iMac G4 - came with OS 10.2.3 - I do not need OS 9 anymore - haven't used it for 2 years, I have the newest Tiger disks and just got iLife 2006 - can I just use those to put my system back on? (I have all of them - Panther, Puma, Bobcat, Lynx - you name it... Steve Jobs is getting his money's worth out of me)....
You can use the Tiger disks, though I would troubleshoot your problem first before even attempting to install Tiger.
    4) Someone told me I should erase my hard drive completely with disk utility first - and then do the clean install on a totally virgin hard drive - is this true? I want to do the absolute premium, totally best thing....
Not necessarily. Once your 10.2 system is healthy, frequently all that is necessary is an Archive and Install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270
I've seen some cases where this doesn't work, while others where it does. So the first thing is to make sure your system is healthy, then back it up, and then upgrade.
    5) Should I write down all the info in "About This Computer" first - like serial number etc - does the above option erase all of that?
The only serial numbers you need are for third party applications, and any Apple pro applications. The operating system has no serial number. This would be in case, you can't restore from your clone when you are finished, and Archive and Install doesn't work.
    6) When I do a clean reinstall - should I name my computer and put in my user name and password etc exactly the way it was?
We'll cross that road once we get there. I'd rather make sure you aren't just installing an unhealthy system on an unhealthy system.
Tell me more about your sick system, and maybe we can solve the issue so all that you need to do is make sure your backup is bootable and an Archive and Install.

  • From Leopard to Tiger; When done Reinstall all Apps from original disks???

    Hi,
I'm trying to record music again with Digital Performer, which I've learned only likes up to Tiger, not my Leopard. I'd need to buy the new version. So I'm thinking I need to go back to Tiger. I'm not feeling the benefit for today of why I even needed Leopard in the first place.
The alert came to my attention when I opened Digital Performer and then Reason but it said reinstall Reason for the Reason engines.
I assume it's because Digital performer 4.6.1 is just not happy on Leopard.
Here's my question. If I go back to Tiger, will I need to reinstall applications like Reason with the original CDs (tone soundbanks and for verification purposes, etc.) or will I be able to simply install Tiger and all applications will be in place. I say this because right now my original application disks are in my home state and I can't readily get them right now.
So in summary, I want to know if I can install Tiger and expect all my apps to run and open smoothly (as they once did before anyway with Tiger.)
    Thanks!
    Dan

So, you can be confident that all applications and documents are left untouched with a archive and install.
None of the apps will sense you've changed your OS and then asked for authentication, needing the disks?
    Thanks for the help.

  • Reinstalling LR3 from my original disk

Because I have had a problem with my computer I have to reinstall LR3 but when I insert the disk in the drive nothing happens. What do I need to do?

Might be quickest to simply download the LR3.6 Trial from the Adobe website and activate it with your serial number.

  • Qosmio G30 (PQG31E) - Reinstalling Windows from the original disk

I bought my Qosmio several years back, and I don't believe, that it still is covered by any warranties.
Recently, my file system on Windows hard drive (C:) has got corrupted (or the hard drive has got some bad sectors; whatever), and chkdsc crashes when i'm trying to fix it. I'd like to reinstall Windows, however, when booting from reanimation DVD, the installation stops with following error message:
"Error: setenv file x:\setenv.ini or x:\tools\setenv.ini not found"
Indeed, the file does not seem to be present, when looking at the x:\ filesystem from the console. However, it's present when viewing the DVD from Windows.
I have found following help on this: http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB0302U10000R01.htm , however, Qosmio's bios isn't like Satellite's bios. I can't find settings provided.
How do I fix this error in Qosmio?

Qosmio G30 is old notebook model and it cannot be covered by standard warranty. It is too old.
This Toshiba document, that describes certain issue on newer Satellite Pro L500D and Satellite Pro L550D, has nothing to do with your old Qosmio notebook.
I also believe that HDD can be troublemaker so check HDD using different tools and following Akumas advice.

  • Hard drive failure in purchased computer with Adobe original disks -how to uninstall and reinstall in my name

I have purchased a Mac computer with the original boxed disks for CS6. The hard drive has failed, and the disks are still registered in the original owner's name. I have emailed the person to ask if they can have the program deactivated on that computer, so that I can reinstall it under my id, but have not heard back from them. Can anyone advise if there is a way to have the program registered in my name? I have the original disks, and already run CS6 on  a PC. Wanted to take the opportunity to convert to Mac. • I just replaced my hard drive and want to reinstall Lion. Was only able to use my original disks and upgrade to 10.5.8 so far.

How can I re-download and install Lion?
2007 iMac hard drive failed yesterday. Replaced drive with a 1Tb from apple and used original disks and software update to get 10.5.8 Leopard running. Updated QT to 7.5.5 so can launch and log in to iTunes. I had purchased Lion previously but can't seem to access the Mac App store to re-download and install my purchased copy.
    Thanks
    MJ

    Upgrade to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
Once you get this far you can look to reinstall Lion from the Purchases page in the App Store or by purchasing a Lion download:
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • How do I back up files and reinstall original disks on my Power Mac G-4 (2000)

How do I back up files and reinstall original disks on my Power Mac G-4 (yr. 2000). I know that sounds basic but I have very few techno skills. So please "talk down" to me. I had a newer PC (2005) but the hard drive crashed and I am trying to resuscitate this old mac until I can afford to buy a new one. I am in the middle of writing a book (based on Steve Job's life) and must have SOMETHING to write with. Anyone have a better one they can loan me? I am in Maine on the coast. BTW this machine seems to have trouble reading or formatting most CD-disks. Can anyone recommend a type and brand that works well with this model? Thanks for any assistance anyone can render. Here is what I have:
    Machine Name:          Power Mac G4
      Machine Model:          PowerMac3,4
      CPU Type:          PowerPC G4  (2.9)
      Number Of CPUs:          1
      CPU Speed:          467 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU):          1 MB
      Memory:          768 MB
      Bus Speed:          133 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:          4.2.8f1

Why do you want to reformat the drive?  Is it because the machine is running slow?
Be sure to backup you important files, like the book, daily.
The cheapest approach would be to try to figure out why the machine is running slow.  Be sure to try safe boot.
You may want to run these "standard" fixes if the problem persists.
    1) Check the amount of free space on your harddrive.  You should have a several gigs free.
    2) You should run disk utility
          Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
          a) verify the disk
          b) update your permissions.
    3) Try a safe boot.
Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive
         is being checked.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1455
    4) Another way to correct filesystem problems is into single use mode.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command + s key then  powering on your machine. The command key
has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar.
    4) You may want to run applejack to clean up your machine.
          http://applejack.sourceforge.net/
    6) Run hardware diagnostics.  It's good for a sanity check.
The older versions of ccc were donationware.
Here are two utilities for making a complete backup of your internal hard drive.  I've recommend using one of these so that you can create a bootable system  on your external hard drive. ( PPC require a firewire connected drive. )  Once created, you can run your system from the external drive.  Hold down the option key on your keyboard then power on your machine.  This will bring you in startup manager click on the drive image you wish to boot then click on the arrow key to the right.

  • Trouble reinstalling Lightroom 1.0 from original disk

I've been running Lightroom 1.0 on my 2008 iMac for 6 years. Fabulous product!
I use OS X ver. 10.9.4, my mac has a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4GB of ram
I had to replace the crashed hard drive with an SSD and have reinstalled Photoshop and Lightroom from the original disks and planned to then download
    whatever updates were available.
Sadly Lightroom will no longer run. I am frugal and do not wish to purchase a monthly license at this time. It all worked fine last week on my old hard drive
so I know that Lightroom will run on this cpu/OS combination. I just need to get it running well enough to load the available updates.
    Any tips?
      Thanks,

    I don't know of a way to re-install Lightroom 1.0 on OS X Mavericks.
However you don't need to join the Cloud to get Lightroom 5. You can upgrade to the perpetually licensed Lightroom 5.6 (latest version) for US$79 (no monthly fees).

  • Reinstalling CS6, but don't have the original disk.

So a couple years back, I bought the Adobe Master Collection CS6, and it worked great. I've recently run into problems with my computer unrelated to Adobe and had to Reset Windows to factory state. My PC was in such bad shape, there was no way for me to back up important files before resetting. Now I have to reinstall Adobe CS6, but I can't track down the original disk. I do however have the product code and serial number, is there a way for me to get CS6 back? Please help.

You can download and use the serial number you have to acrivate it.
