Reinstalling Snow Leopard on MacBook Air with SuperDrive. Won't boot up.

It won't boot up, and is stuck cycling between gray screen of death and what appears to be the "off" position.
Elsewhere, people seem to make it to the gray screen, and it freezes. My situation, however, cycles between that and the black screen of "off." It's been doing this for over six hours. This isn't normal, right?
Other people have talked about a progress bar freezing at 32% or something like that. I, however, don't even GET to a progress bar. Boo.
What can I do? Will force-powering-down be bad?

This is a Fault of the newer Mac's Power management scheme. There is a LONG Thread on it somewhere on this forum.
Hold down the power button for 10 seconds then let it up. Then wait a few seconds and press it again. The system should start back up. If it doesn't then you have some type of hardware problem and you need to take it to Apple to be fixed or replaced.

  • Install snow leopard on macbook air with lion?

i´m trying to install snow leopard on my macbook air from a macbook with os x 10.7
there is no remote install app anymore!
    Any ideas???

What? If you have a MacBook with Lion how are you using it to install Snow Leopard (which you don't have) on a MacBook Air?
Or is your subject correct and you have purchased a MacBook Air that came with Lion and you are trying to install Snow Leopard on it?

After buying a second-hand laptop running Snow Leopard, I made mistake of upgrading software, creating mail accounts, Safari preferences, etc., before noticing that the account name was "user".  I want to replace this Admin account with my own short name, but can't seem to do it without completely reinstalling Snow Leopard.  If I do this, will I lose everything I have done already?  Thanks in advance,

  • MacBook Air USB Superdrive Won't Accept Disks

We recently purchased a MacBook Air and our client wanted to have OS X wiped out and have Windows XP SP/2 only.
In order to accomplish this, we purchased the $99 MacBook Air USB Superdrive, booted to the OS X installation CD, ran the Disk Utility, wiped the hard drive, ejected the OS X cd, rebooted and inserted the Windows XP SP/2 installation CD. We installed Windows XP SP/2 and configured all the drivers via bootcamp.
The MacBook Air runs XP just dandy. Even the MacBook Air USB Superdrive was working within Windows XP SP/2 on the MacBook Air.
But recently, the MacBook Air USB Superdrive has been having problems. We can no longer insert a disk. Upon trying to insert a disk, the drive "pushes back" as if it's stuck in "eject mode."
Has anyone had this problem and if so, how did you resolve it?
    Thanks,

I had the same problem before. Seems like the XP driver has a problem and doesn't work when the drive is plugged in AFTER XP has started. Try plugging the Superdrive before you start XP and see if it works.

  • Please help with how to copy CS3 from iMac (Snow Leopard) to MacBook Air (Mavericks)

I have a 2006 Mac Desktop computer with the CS3 suite on it.  I still have the discs for the suite and would like to move it over to my macbook air.  I tried to just copy the Photoshop file, but that didn't work. Is there an easy way to migrate these files from one mac to another?  My MacBook Air does not have a DVD drive. Ideally, I would like to have these files on both computers, as I believe you can have your purchased programs on 2 computers.  Anyone have a a quick and easy way to make this happen?

Never, ever migrate. CS installs are "Machine specific", you break licensing doing that.
Go here: Download CS3 products and download the installer for your suite onto your new Mac.

  • Stereo Bluetooth w/ Snow Leopard and MacBook Air

I just bought a Plantronics Voyager 855 stereo bluetooth headset to use with my iPhone and I would like to use it with my MacBook Air as well. Is it compatible with the MBA 1.1 and Snow Leopard?

my jbl bluetooth stereo headphones no longer have stereo sound but now have only mono since upgrade/ download of snow leopard. they sounded really great for months prior to the upgrade to snow leopard. i have a new imac and paired and repaired the device and still only mono sound.
what gives? sort of a huge disappointment since i listen to a lot of music on youtube and internet radio. seems like a downgrade to me. if i knew this i would have never upgraded to snow leopard.

  • Downgrade Lion to snow leopard in macbook air late 2010?

Please, is there anyway to do this, lion its just too slow, and my battery drains faster in lion.
i am totally dissapointed of upgrading to lion, can someone help downgrading?
    Regards.

Sure there is an original USB stick. It came inserted in a white card with the rest of the documentation, neatly packaged in a black cover. On the card it is called Macbook Air Software Reinstall Drive and on the back of the card it is noted "This USB flash drive contains a backup copy of your Macbook Air software ... To reinstall MAC OS X ..." The stick is needed for MBAs because they don't have a DVD drive.
Erasing the disk: I meant erasing the internal SSD drive in my MBA.
iMac reinstall: I used the grey DVD that came with that machine (which does have a drive that will take it).
Apple Mail etc. I have a TimeMachine backup so I was eventually able to restore the mail AS IT WAS ON SEPT 1 when I installed Lion. However, it took many hours because the Library folder was "missing". I am a complete MAC novice so it took a while to figure it all out. My situation is that I have 2 drives in my iMac, an 250 Gb SSD and a 1 Tb normal drive. I had set up the User folder on the normal drive, but the OS on the SSD. When I upgraded to Lion this was kept, but the Library folder was hidden. After my fresh reinstall of SL on the SSD, I again moved my home folder to the normal drive, but Library still was not accessible. I tried unhiding it using "mv .Library Library" from Terminal, without success. I then renamed it to LibraryOld and copied its contents to a temp directory for easier access (you can reach this hidden folder starting from the home folder in Finder and going to Go, Go to Folder. I subsequently restored my last SL "Library" using Time Machine. That gave me my slightly old mail back. What a hassle and waste of time.
As to the MBA. Because I had messed it up so much, all I could do was reinstall Lion on it (from Apple Shop). That proved that the SSD drive was not harmed in any way. I then held the alt key when booting and tried the TimeMachine backup on the NAS (which is only reachable as part of this restore operation, not from within Lion). This worked, but I haven't played around with it yet to see if everything is back to normal.

  • Install Snow Leopard on MacBook Air

Does anyone know if there are any complications upgrading to Snow Leopard on a MacBook Air via the remote disk facility?

I am installing Snow Leopard on a colleague's MacBook Air via the DVD/CD sharing and the update seems to be taking forever. When I started, the duration of the install was estimated at 41 minutes....well, 3 hours later I am looking at 39 minutes remaining...
Has anyone seen this happen and if so - what did you do? How long did it take to install?
One detail - when I first started the installation, the installer said that the MacBook Air disk/volume needed to be repaired and that SL installation was going to do that. Perhaps that added to the length of the installation?

  • Can't transfer from iMac with snow leopard to Macbook pro with leopard

    Hey
I Have a bit of a problem and hope someone can help me out.
I have a 2008 Macbook Pro running on Leopard and my wife has a 2010 iMac running on snow leopard. We were trying to share some files and there was no problem from mine to hers. I've put the folders on my public folder and she picked them up and transfered them to her computer. The other way was impossible. I can see her computer on finder and i connect to it as a guest (as she did to mine), but nothing appears there, altough the folders are on her public folder. I've checked the settings and everything seems to be the same on both computers.
Does anyone knows whats going on?
    Appreciate some help

See this tip if your data isn't backed up:

In the future always backup your data before updating.

  • HT1352 After Accepting Update On 32-bit Mac Mini Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, The Mac Won't Boot

About a month ago, I was using my older Mac-Mini which was running 10.6.8, a screen came up from the Mac App Store, telling me that an update to OS X was available so I took the update.
I regret it now.  When the Mac restarted itself, it went down, but it hasn't been back up since.
I've been around Macs a long time now, and I should know by now to restart, quitting all of my apps and everything as much as possible.  The Apple updater really should restart before and after a system update, in my humble opinion.
But, I want to get my old Mac running again now.
I've researched this some and I've tried the following
    * Disconnected all peripherals, except the monitor, and cycled power.
    * Cycled the power and tried to zap the P-RAM (NV-RAM)
    * Cycled the power and then hold down the "D" key (for diagnostic).
    * Cycled the power again and hold down the Option key (to boot from the original optical disk).
    * Cycled the power again and hold down the "C" key (ditto)
    * Cycled the power again and hold down Command-V (for verbose mode)
    * Cycled the power again and hold down Option-Command-O-F (to get into open-firmare) I don't know if I have an open-firmare password, but nothing else worked.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
Maybe open-firmare isn't the issue as to why the other key-combinations didn't work.
I've tried a different keyboard and mouse.
I doubt that the problem is a hardware problem.  The problem seems so highly correlated with my taking anothing OS update from Apple.

@Carolyn, thank you very much for your reply.  I appreciate you taking the time to try and help me.
    > Hold down the C key to boot from an install disc, not the Option key.
I inserted my Snow Leopard install disk and cycled the power, holding downt he C key and I got to the grey screen with the Apple logo in the center of the screen with a little spinning progress indicator.  This is what I always get.
    > Try booting in Safe Mode and verify the startup disk for errors.
    > Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
    > A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
I carefully read and followed the link on Safe Mode that you provided and I got the same result as always.
    > Once you are in Safe Mode, launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
    > Select the startup disk on the left then select the First tab.
    > Click Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
Maybe it is something of a hardware problem.  Maybe the disk does need to be repaired, but I can't get in to repair it now.
I will keep this in mind when taking updates from Apple in the future.
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Verify the disk and repair any errors.
    3. Restart.
    4. Then, let Apple update my software.
    > Boot from your install disc while holding down the C key if Disk Utility reports problems.
    > Mac OS X 10.6: Reinstalling Mac OS X
I've done this before, with the same Mac-Mini and the same optiical disk, and it worked.
I also tried starting in target-disk mode, but I always get the same result, the grey screen with an Apple logo and a spinning progress indicator.
I don't know what else to try.

  • Reinstalling Snow Leopard on Macbook Pro

So recently my new macbook pro has been acting strange. My macbook pro came with two CDs. If I decide to reinstall OSX on my comp using the backup CDs provided when I bought my comp, will it still include iLife 09?

If it were me and I didn't want to lose my text, data, folders, etc., and just wanted to refresh my SL system I'd perform a custom install and use "archive and install" option.
If you still have the problem and can afford to lose your previous data, reinstall anew.

  • How to reinstall Snow Leopard on a Mini with no Optical drive

I have a Mini running 10.9 that needs to be wiped./reloaded. I have a set of discs from another Mini, a few months older than the one in triage, but when I set up via remote disc, I get a box saying I have to use Installer 23.1.1. The version number the discs report is 23.1.1. There's no menu to do a reformat since the installer program won't load. What is plan-B?

    You cannot use Remote Disk to install Mac OS X. Quoting from Apple's support article on Remote Disk (emphasis mine);
Note: These types of discs or activities are not supported by DVD or CD sharing:
    DVD movies.
    Audio CDs.
Copy protected discs such as game discs.
Install discs for an operating system such as Microsoft Windows (for use with Boot Camp), or Mac OS X.
    Burn a CD or DVD
You'll need a USB optical drive, either an Apple SuperDrive or a third-party unit.
    Regards.

  • Will iLife be deleted when I erase my hard drive and reinstall Snow Leopard and the Applications with the disks that came with the computer?

I plan to restore my computer to factory settings to have a fresh start but i dont know if all the ilife applications will still be there (imovie, iphoto, etc). Or is the ilife applications included in the Applications Install DVD?

Yes, they are, unless you have a machine which shipped with Mac OS X Server, in which case you wouldn't have them to begin with.

  • Our MacBook Air (2012 model) won't boot up.

The screen comes up with a folder icon and a "?" in it. The folder is blinking at about a 2 second interval.  Bad internal static memory?  It has 4 GB of on board RAM and a 256 GB of solid state storage capacity. I am pretty certain it is running the latest rev of Mountain Lion.  Any ideas out there?

? mark on boot means your Mac cannot locate a System Folder to boot from.
Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk then click Restart.
