Reinstalling snow leopard system

Brought my mac with leopard system, a friend used his family pack to help me upgrade to snow leopard, but now i wanted to reinstall my computer, would that mean i will go back to leopard again?

If you use the Snow disc to reinstall you will stay with Snow. A Snow reinstall (not erase and install) by default will give you new system files while keeping everything else. But always good to have a backup to restore from if something goes wrong. (Always good to have a backup, period.) Why do you want to reinstall?
If you want to use the original Leopard DVD, you wil have to erase and install. You will be downgrading.

  • Just reinstalled Snow Leopard - where's the "previous system" located?

I just successfully reinstalled Snow Leopard. I'm satisfied my new system works fine, so I'd like to delete the previous system - as I've done in the past before Snow Leopard.
Is there a "Previous System" folder lurking around somewhere on my hard disk? If so, where did it go?
    Thanks!

Is there a "Previous System" folder lurking around somewhere on my hard disk?
No. All of the components which would be located in it are either part of the current system or were deleted during the installation.

  • I can't boot my MBP or reinstall snow leopard

I have an old 2005 MBP (non unibody) using snow leopard. I urgently need to get it running again since it stopped booting up last feb 2012 and I haven't used it since as I'm using a desktop now. When I turn it on I get no chime and the screen goes grey with an alternating apple logo, and a no entry sign, and occasionally a folder with a question mark on it. When I insert snow leopard and reboot it allows me to select language, and the home screen comes up with the option to reinstall the OS. I have also been to the utilities>disk utilities and tried verifying and then repairing the HD. When verifying it says my drive appears to be ok, and when repairing it appears to have not fixed anything. I've then quitter DU and gone back to try re-installing snow leopard and although the progress bar estimates 30mins or so it takes hours, then gets to about 3/4 done and comes up with a failure message saying..
    Install Failed
Mac OSX could not be installed on your computer
The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail.
    Contact the manufacturer for assistance
Click restart to restart your computer and try installing again
I did have the installer log window open whilst trying this and the last line before the install failure message contains loads of stuff which means nothin to me but contained within this text is this "an error occurred while extracting files from the package " lexmark_laserdrivers.pkg". Underlying error=(error domain=BOMcopierfatalerror code=28....(loads more text after this..)
    Any help would be appreciated!!
    Thanks

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite.  Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard.  Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks?  Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite. Now have numerous problems.  Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard?  Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks?  Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?

Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
    1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
    2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
    3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system.

  • How do I uninstall mountain lion and reinstall snow leopard

If I had known that I would not be able to use my excel files I would not have purchased OSX Mountain Lion.  Is there a way to uninstall mountain lion and reinstall snow leopard?
    Thank you,

To get more to the point the answer is the only way to go back to SnowLeopard is if you have a complete backup of your system from before the upgrade.
If you do you would boot off your original SL DVD wipe the disk and install SL and then restore from your SL backups.
Short of that here is no way to go back. But as the others have offered there are other less drastic means to deal with the problem.

  • Need to reinstall Snow Leopard?

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, I am new to posting in the forum. I just got my iMac back a few days ago from Best Buy, it had the hard drive replaced (for the 2nd time in 7 months). What had happened this time was that it was constantly freezing and sometimes crashing. The Apple Support tech told me it was a Safari 5 problem and to reinstall Snow Leopard and then when I did the updates to NOT update to Safari 5. Well, the whole thing went down and I had to take it in to get the HD replaced. I installed SL myself, but I did not check off the box for Rosetta. Will that cause problems? Because I am having some problems with videos people have sent via email and some MySpace content. One time a message box flashed up that said something about a MIME plugin missing but I have not been able to duplicate that error message. When I go on the certain MySpace pages (band pages), especially one in particular, everything shows up except for a huge white box in the middle above the band's page. Also, my Realplayer (newest version, 12) will download videos but it will not play them in the Realplayer window. You can go to the folder where the video is and the thumbnail will play, but not in the window where it should. Any suggestions? I'm not a very technical person, though I can follow instructions that are straightforward. This really has me aggravated though. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The first thing I'd recommend is NEVER take your machine to BBY for any repair, if you have an Apple Store in the area take it there. The advice your got about not installing Safari 5 is a good example, Safari 5 is fine and runs extremely well.
Roesetta is a tool that is only needed if you are running programs that were not designed for an Intel based iMac. Even if you don't have it currently loaded if you try to run one of those programs OS X is smart enough to ask you again if you want to download it. In short it's nothing to worry about.
Videos can be in a variety of different formats so to ensure your system runs all of them download and install VLC Media Player, it will allow you to run video from different codecs on your Mac.
If you are still having issues after doing that make an appointment at your local Apple Store and bring your machine in, an Apple Genius will be happy to help you out.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • HT3910 How do I erase Mountain Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard?

Can anyone help me erase Mountain Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard. When I had installed Mountain Lion,I discovered that my music notation program, Overture was not working with Mountain Lion. Please help me, years of work is for now lost.

    Back up your data files.
Use the Snow Leopard installer disc to completely erase your hard drive and everything on it.
Re-install the SL operating system, then all your applications, then your data files.
If you happened to make a bootable backup clone of your hard drive before installing Mountail Lion then you can just clone the backup back to your drive.

  • Reinstalling snow leopard on a machine that has mountain lion

Having trouble reinstalling Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro (aluminum 17", 2008 or so) that is currently running Mountain Lion... advice?

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Reinstalled snow leopard again, but still no free space? HELP!

    Hi all,
    im still very new to all this so hope someone can explain it in simple terms for me! My macbook only has 20GB left and is chock full and running quite slow, so I went into mac store recently and the very helpful guys told me to do the following;
backed everything up to time machine external hard drive first, then they said to reinstall my installation disks to wipe everything and then reinstall snow leopard again. I clicked to option of erase and install as i thought that would overwrite everything, but after the few hours it took to do all this - i logged in again and everything is still on there!
how do i wipe everything on my computer safely (and make sure its backed up) to free up space?

    Hi starbud;
Something sounds wrong here. It doesn't sound like you are working with a Snow Leopard DVD because with SL Apple dropped the erase & install option from their installer.
In order to do an erase and install with SL, you must open Disk Utility when booted from the DVD and erase the disk from there.
Having said all of that I think this plan you were told is totally futile because if you erase and install and then restore from Time Machine, your disk is going to be just as full as it was when you stated.
A better solution is to get a tool like OmniDiskSweeper and find out what is taking up all the space. Then delete what you can and move whatever you can't delete some place else.
Whatever you don't pick on the operating system. It is general the least of your problems. The heavy hitters are music, photos and videos.

  • HELP! How do I remove Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard and my files

HELP! How do I remove Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard & my files  BUT I just discovered my Apple Time Capsule which was using Time Machine DIED
I had to go to MacMall and have the Time Capsule data transfered to a new BAK drive($300+$300)
(The Apple Store sent me there as they said they do not do data transfer)
    Now what do I do?
? ?  One Senior advisor said that I will have to drag and drop the data file or files? from the Time Capsule BAK drive back to my iMAC but will that include all           the Snow Leopard operating system ?
? ?  Another senior advisor said I will have to wipe my hard drive then install Snow Leopard then "drag and drop",  ?  ??
All my business leases, database, spreadsheets. letters, mail merge files, and so on are not available with Lion -
I AM VERY ANGRY AS I NEVER SAW THAT WRITTEN ANYWHERE !!!
I am seriously confused and I AM SCARED TO MAKE A MISTAKE-HELP !!
WHAT DO I DO ?  AND   IN WHAT ORDER? PLEASE HELP!

Your post is confusing to read too.
It sounds like you still have your files on your Mac. Why do you want to back track to Snow Leopard on your Mac? Why can't you read your files from your Mac? If your files are on your Mac, why are you taking them off your broken Time Capsule? You don't have to install Snow Leopard to transfer your files back to your Mac. Maybe step back a bit and explain your situation a little better with details.  For instance, what's a BAK drive? Suggest you explain what you are trying to do?
Before you do anything, create a backup of your Mac to another disk drive.. suggest you use Carbon Copy Cloner to make another copy of your Mac.

  • Reinstalling Snow Leopard MacBook Air into Mavericks/Lion

    Hi!
I have a MacBook Air from 2011 with Snow Leopard on it. I want to wipe my hardrive clean and install either Lion or Mavericks on it. The problem with the 2011 model with Snow Leopard is that you cannot reboot and reinstall it without a USB key, right? So, if I install either Lion or Mavericks on the computer before I reinstall it, will that give me an option to reinstall without an USB key, or is it a permanent condition for the Macbook Air from 2011 to be without an Internet recovery mode?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi!

While not exactly answering your specific questions, my advice:  Partition your hard drive for a new 2nd partition of about 80% of the remaining capacity.  Install Lion or Mavericks into the new partition.
That way you have a Snow Leopard partition to work with by "dual-booting" (Startup Disk in System Preferences).  If you discover that some of your software will not work in Lion/Mavericks, you have the Snow Leopard option to work with them.
Reinstalling Snow Leopard after a complete wipe/install Lion or Mavericks will be very difficult and time consuming.

  • How do you erase Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard

I want to remove Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard.  I put the install disc in and clicked Install so that I could get to the disc utilities.  Got a reading that this version of OS X cannot be used on this computer.  I'm using a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro.  I don't have any backups made, but I am not worried about that...I just want to go back to using Snow Leopard.  Lion has too many quirks I don't want to put up with.  Any suggestions?

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.

  • Reinstalled Snow Leopard - or did I??

    HI all.
Lately my Snow Leopard has become a Snow Turtle. Harddisk is spinning alot and many operations must wait and wait before it becomes their turn. Harddisk has been checked, permissions repaired and many other tricks that should have solved the problem. Finally I decided to reinstall Snow Leopard on my iMac24.
The disc was inserted and a reinstall was tried. Everything went smooth and the Mac restarted fine. However it seems like no reinstall has been made. There are no softwareupgrades available and a new folder called Mac OS X Install Data has appeared at the toplevel besides Applications, Library and users. It contains a long row of software updaters pretty much like the folder Receipts that are nomally located in the Library folder.
    What has happened???

    Thanks - of course...
I believe this is the problem:
    X.app/Contents/Resources/InstallAssistantTool106[836]: Couldn't bless the installation disk: disk1
If I recall correctly this means that the installation disc could not be set as the boot volume?
Well, what do I do next - find another Installation DVD?
    Best regards
    Jesper
