Reinstalling Solaris 8

Dear Solaris Gurus,
I have Sun Sparc machine with Solaris 9. I want
reinstall Solaris 8.
I am doing the follwing,
I booted from the Cdrom and after 3 steps it throws an error
"X Error of failed request: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation) "
I want to totally format my Present Solaris 9 and reinstall Solaris 8. Plz tell me how to do it.
Regards
Gopalan

Seems like there is a problem with your X - environment, you could try and type the following from the OBP:
boot cdrom - install w
.. when the CD labeled "Solaris Software CD 1/2" is inserted into the computer.
This should give you a text-based install GUI instead.

  • Reinstalling Solaris 10 on SunFire V120

    Hi,
I would like to get some step-by-step instruction on how to reinstall the Solaris 10 into a SunFire V120.
    The situation is like this..
    1. We have a ununse Sunfire V120. It was able to boot up from the HDD till the console prompt.
    2. But no one know the username/password. And from the bootup message, it is running "SunOS Release 5.8 Version Generic_108528-18 64-bit".
    3. I've tried going into "LOM>" prompt and do a "bootmod forth". After resetting it I was able to go into "OK" prompt.
    4. When I do a "boot cdrom" it give this error message "Fast Data Access MMU Miss".
What error is this? The that I put in is the burn image of Disc1 of the Solaris 10 download from SUN.
I can use this Disc1 to reinstall my SunBlade 150.
Is there anything that I miss out for the V120 reinstallation??
    Thanks a million in advance.

The error you observed was simply because you had halted the system
in a brute force fashion. There was still data cached in place.
"Fast data MMU Miss" is a classic console output
for "Ouch! That hurt! You hit the brakes too quickly!"
Get it to OBP once again.
Set your auto-boot variable to 'false' and reset the chassis.
It will go through a power cycle reset and automatically stop at the OK prompt.
Every data bus will be empty and you won't see that error
when you try to boot from the optical drive.
There are additional web resources for that system ...
The Sunfire V120 has a resource page in the Sun System Handbook
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/SunFireV120/SunFireV120.html
which included links to all its documentation.
If you need a bit of help with OBP commands,
then find the OBP4.x Command Reference Manual at Docs.Sun.Com
    http://docs.sun.com/app/docs?q=816-1177
    ========
Then again, you could just Google for keywords "solaris root password"
and find guidance on clearing the current password to a null value.
Then you will be able to reboot the system to its current Solaris 8 environment.
( ... a woefully underpatched Solaris 8 environment, but it would still boot.)

  • How to reinstall Solaris Grub menu

I have a dual boot PC with Solaris 10 and Windows Vista. I installed Windows Vista and the Solaris 10. So I got a boot menu (which I assume is a grub menu) to make a selection of the OS I want to boot on my system.
Unfortunately I lost the grub for Solaris. Now I can boot only on Windows. How do I recover the previously installed grub?
PS: Steps to do this will be helpful.

You need at least a bootable Solaris Install CD/DVD. Go to command line option rather than install option. Type 'grub' and enter
    # grub here you type 'c' to get to 'grub' command prompt
    grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
(hd0,1,a) Note: This is the answer from grub where solaris boot partition resides - number may be different on your system+
    grub> root (hd0,1,a)
filesystem is ufs, partition type 0xbf
    grub> setup (hd0)
    Checking if “boot/grub/stage1” exists...yes
    Checking if “boot/grub/stage2” exists...yes
    Checking if “boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5” exists...yes
    Running “embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5(hd0)”...16 sectors
    are embedded... succeeded
    Running “install /boot/grub/stage1(hd0) (hd0)1+16p (hd0,1,a)
    /boot/grub/stage2/boot/grub/menu.lst”... succeeded
    Done.
    grub> quit
    # reboot

  • [solaris 8] Oracle 8.1.6 EE: no more data to read from socket

    Hi,
I'm sorry for writing to this list, but it is the most related I could find.
I installed Oracle 8.1.6 EE on a sparc 5 with solaris 8. I had to install the thread patches for solaris 8 because the emn0 process of oracle was dying every 30 minutes.
After that, the DB seemed to work ok, but when running a heavy java process (jdbc),
the process reports "java.sql.SQLException: No more data to read from socket".
Have anyone experienced this kind of problem ?
I decided to reinstall solaris 7... Could anyone help me ? comments ? suggestions ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Gabriel

Reason: the ORACLE server process crashes (sometimes), and the result is the "empty"
    socket.

  • How to Access Space on a large Hard Drive (Solaris 10 Running)/

    Good morning everyone,
I have looked back a year on this forum and on hardware forums and I don't see this topic covered.
Recently I installed Solaris 10 on a Sun Blade 150. Not being very smart, I accepted the default settings. The computer only sees about 1/3 of the hard drive. Some mentioned that Zones would let me see and use the rest of the hard drive. And the person mentioned that I could reinstall Solaris 10. I rather not do that, because I have done this three times already to solve other issues and the last effort required a lot of work to be able to see the Internet again.
So what could I do to gain access to the rest of my hard drive?
    Thank you,
    Fred Strickland

    Good afternoon Sparcy and others,
I am not home in front of my Sun Blade 150, but I have been doing some reading. It is not clear to me if the provided information works for a client or home networked computer. For example, I am reading the System Administration Guide: Devices and File Systems, Chapter 10, page 205 and following. I am unclear if the partitioning command is able to see the entire hard drive or not. And I am unclear if using the command would destroy what I have already placed on the hard drive.
I tried to read and understand the following links, but I have come away more confused than before I started. I am not even sure if Zones will be the final answer.
    Help!
    Thank you,
    Fred

  • Solaris 8 - 9 with RAID-5 SVM

Intending on upgrading a system from Solaris 8 to Solaris 9 by doing a split of root mirrors and reinstalling Solaris 9 on one side.
The rest of the disks are grouped together in a RAID 5 config.
What's the best way to deal with these meta devices post upgrade, to get them into the new build? Will it need to be recreated from scratch, loosing the data on the drives, or can it be recreated in the same way as a mirror, preserving data?
    Thanks in advance.

Easiest is probably to grab the configuration from the current machine and create a metadevice on the new system with the same parameters.
If you create the raid5 device with the -k option, it won't zero the disks. Then you can see if the filesystem is visible on the metadevice.
If you leave off the -k, it'll destroy the data.
Make sure you do the disks in the correct order.

  • Formatting a HDD with the Solaris 8 install when the disk space is locked.

I added memory, a printer, and a CD Writer to my PC, and then I reinstalled solaris 8. At the point where it asks which drive to use, the only available drive, which is my C: drive, shows up with a negative disk space value. However, when I look at the partition size, it is 20 GB, and if I change it, it has no effect on the negative value. This is a reinstall of Solaris 8 onto the same drive. Is there a way to fdisk the drive. Solaris 8 won't do it, and Partition Magic seems to only work with linux, which does not seem compatible with Solaris?

  • Setting up solaris 8 opreating environment after promt interruption

I was setting up my Solaris 8 desktop operating system using the automatically shown promt-questions (domain name, proxy server etc.) when I had to shut the system down.
Does anyone know how I can get to this set up session again so I don't have to set everything manually or reinstall Solaris 8?

    Hia,
    by my experience ...
If you were 'upgrading to s8 and it started the upgrade, ie, wrote to disk, you may have have to reinstall s8 from scratch ..
If you were installing s8 from scratch, ie, initial install than there is no way back half way into the install program as it is all done from cdrom/tmp so all that info would have been reset when the system was reset.
    hope this helps .. sorry!

  • Solaris 8 x86 Shutdown

    Hello,
I have installed the Solaris 8 Intel x86 edition. Now I have a (maybe silly) problem: I don't know how to shut down Solaris.
I am working with the CDE desktop. When I am logging out from there, the desktop is closed and the entrance panel for another CDE session appears. From this point, I don't find a way how to get a command prompt or a menu item for shutting down the solaris system for switching off the computer in a safe way.
When I am switching off the computer at the point of the entrance panel, this causes damages of the file system.
Inside CDE desktop, I cannot find a menu item for closing the CDE session and shutting down.
When I open a console within CDE and enter SHUTDOWN or HALT command, this ends the running Solaris but also damages the file system.
Can anybody tell me what the correct procedure is?
Thank you very much for your help!
    Thomas

    Hello,
I reinstalled Solaris 8 the same way as before, but now I always shutdown the system with init 5. So far, no problems with the file system occured. So I think the problem was the wrong shutdown methods I have used before.

  • Solaris cluster 3.2 Sparc

    Hi folks
First things first. I may not have great knowledge about Solaris clusters, so please be merciful :)
Here it is what I have:
    - 2 x Netra T1 AC200 each with 1GB Ram, 2x18GB disks, 500 MHZ Sparc Cpu, 4 port ethernet card
    - 1 array netra d130 3x36 GB
-- cable et all, switches , you name it
So, I set up the OS, all ok. I set up the cluster, all SEEMS to be ok.
But when I define my resources and stuff like that all goes fine, except when I try top bring the resource group on line.
On another configuration I teste the shared logical hostname and works fine.
    Group Name Resources
    Resources: ingresc nodec ingresr
    -- Resource Groups --
Group Name Node Name State Suspended
    Group: ingresc node2 Unmanaged No
    Group: ingresc node1 Unmanaged No
    -- Resources --

    Resource: ingresr node2 Offline Offline
    Resource: ingresr node1 Offline Offline
scswitch: (C969069) Request failed because resource group ingresc is in ERROR_STOP_FAILED state and requires operator attention
    Now, in /var/adm/messsages I spotted this :
    Mar 6 17:09:03 node2 Cluster.RGM.rgmd: [ID 224900 daemon.notice] launching method <hafoip_stop> for resource <nodec>, resource group <IngresNCG>, node <node2>, timeout <300> seconds

A little bit of research points in the direction of a bug (see CR 6565601)
Here it is what I see as my options:
1 - reinstall Solaris OS, but not the Solaris Cluster 3.2, instead using Solaris Express 10/07 or 2/08. But will this combination work ? Or will it work only in the combination Solaris Cluster Express and Solaris Express Developer Edition ? If the later, which versions will work together ?
2 - Beg for a Solaris Cluster 3.2 patch, although in my humble opinion, this should be free since it looks to me that once you write your own stuff, you run in the bug, and after all it is education
    Any ideas, help, greatly appreciated
    Many thanks
    Armand

  • Solaris 10 Patching issues

    Any body have these problems.
    System:
    AMD Duron 1200MHZ
    512Kb Ram
    40gig IDE HD
    Netgear FG511 NIC
I am a Noob with Solaris and Unix in general and dont have any experience with Linux but am open minded and enjoy getting my teeth into new stuff. I have found Solaris to be a great challenge and Unix seems to be a suitable replacement to Windows. The only issue I have is regarding patching of the OS. I recently downloaded the recommended x86 patches and ran the install_cluster...upon reboot solaris just kept rebooting...there was some kind of panic in the kernel. I had a look on the net and found the patch that was causing the issue. I then rebuilt(I could have removed the patch but decided to do a rebuild anyway) I then edited the Patch_order file and removed the reference to the 118844-20 patch which caused the kernel panic.
I then installed the cluster again and rebooted and it seemed that solaris came up fine. but when I logged in a couple of applications for GNOME did not start(window list, workspace switcher, show desktop etc) it gave an error and asked if I wanted to restart these apps.
Next I tried to open a .gz archive and the file roller app died.
I then went to a terminal window and gunzipped the archive and then tried to tar -x the resulting file from the gunzip about half way through the untar Solaris rebooted. I have had no issues with archive files prior to patching so can only assume that it is one of the patches that is causing the issue?????
    has anyone had similer issues.
I must admit, its a bit unnerveing when you install recommended patches that your system becomes very unstable.

    Hi,
I have the same problem and unfortunately no answers. Same story - build Solaris on machine, runs fine. Run update connection, load security and recommended patches and boom - Solaris is now broken. Unfortunately I didn't find a way to recover so my only course of action is to reinstall Solaris.
I traced it to a similar patch - 118844-30. I've since rebuilt the box using S10 Update 1 which includes Grub etc, but same problem if I run update connection and download the recommended patches which inlcudes 118844-30 => reinstall Solaris.
    Any ideas?

  • "Short read error" after patching solaris 10 x86?

We recently bought an Ultra 20 with Solaris 10. The first thing we did was attempt to patch it with smpatch. Specifically, we did the following steps:
    > smpatch update
    > shutdown -i s -g 0
    > smpatch add -x idlist=/var/sadm/disallowed_patch_list
    > reboot
When the machine rebooted we got a "short read error" message when trying to load in various drivers and wouldn't boot. We assumed that the disk had crashed and we reinstalled solaris from the DVDs. After the reinstallation, we went to patch the machine again, with the same steps, and exactly the same thing happened!
So is there something wrong with patching solaris 10 on x86? Has anybody else experienced this problem where the patching corrupts the disks (or the drivers)?
    Thanks.
    Karl

There have always been "short read error"s during boot on <b>some</b> systems with Solaris 10 x86 since the release.

Do you get the error every time during boot? Sometimes it helps to
press <RETURN> at the boot prompt, and not let the system wait for
    the five second timeout.

  • Completely fresh install of Solaris 10 on Ultra20

    Hi Folks,
I need to completely reinstall Solaris 10 on my Ultra 20, and due to past file system problems want to make this an entirely "clean" installation.
How can I format and prepare my drive for this clean installation? No dual/triple boots will be necessary.
Recent attempts have stalled after installation upon rebooting, when it never gets past the "Configuring devices" message....
    Any help/suggestions much appreciated.

    Hi Folks,
I need to completely reinstall Solaris 10 on my Ultra
20, and due to past file system problems want to make
this an entirely "clean" installation.Just run a normal "initial" install rather than an "upgrade". The process will suggest and prompt for a disk layout, and it will create a new, empty filesystem on the disk.
Recent attempts have stalled after installation upon
rebooting, when it never gets past the "Configuring
devices" message....If that happens, you'll need to troubleshoot it. Post here with more details.
