Reinstalling system on a new hdd

It seems like a common problem that the original Samsung HDDs die an early death. I started getting SMART 301 warnings several months ago, but my HP dv6 kept functionning normally until this week. Now it won't boot up, so it's time for a new HDD. I thought I was fully prepared, as I had been saving all my work on an external drive, had a nice new fast HDD to install and had my recovery discs at the ready. After running the recovery discs, I'm stuck. The new HDD won't boot, and I can't proceed with anything the HP Recovery console proposes me on its menu. Windows recovery is also stuck as there is no previous image saved on this new disc.
Looking at the new HDD, I see that the HP Recovery discs have only formatted 60GB, sort of a mini recovery partition and nothing else. When I try to restore the factory image, the HP Recovery Console refuses with the message this disk is smaller than the original.
Can anyone advise me how either to get around this with the recovery discs, or how I might just do a clean install of Windows 7 without having to buy a new installation disc outright? HP doesn't furnish a Windows disc with this computer.

New HDD I would like to install: Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,
Recovery Discs often have problems reinstalling the OS if the new HDD is smaller than the one installed when they were originally created.
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around if you have ( or can borrow ) a retail Windows 7 installation disc that is exactly the same version as your OEM installation - ie if your notebook came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit this is the exact retail version you would need.
If you don't have access to a retail disc, you can create an installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

  • ITunes reinstall question on a new HDD.

Ok, this may be a bit different...I have not located an answer on the boards to solve this.
I installed a new HDD due to several persistent issues even after restoring from Time Machine more than once. I figured the issue was imbedded in my OS that lived in Time Machine. Seems correct, after install of new HDD and several wipes and reinstalls, I backed up iTunes and iPhoto and docs...on a new external HDD. I reinstalled OS imported photos, so far so good. How the heck do I only reinstall iTunes to include my iPhone data? I can copy/paste all the songs into the "new" iTunes but the iPhone is not recognized. Any ideas out there?

Use TM or Migration Assistant to restore your user folder.

  • After reinstall of OS and new HDD, can't import JPGs into iphoto from my SD card

My HDD failed - so I installed new HDD, reinstalled Snow Leopard and had Time Machine copy all my backed up content to my White Macbook (2007).
All my content is back - events etc in iphoto. But I just tried to import 200+ pictures from my camera's SD card, a process that has always worked flawlessly .... The thumbnails appeared blank on the Import screen. After clicking Import, and seemibgly going throufgh every picture, the error message was thatfiles could not be imported - The files are in an unrecognizable file format.
Any ideas? Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks, Johannes

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and product number of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
The above requested information can be found on the bottom of the computer, inside the battery compartment, or on the BIOS startup/setup screen. Please do not include the serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and post it here for our review.
If your computer came with Windows 8, it may be possible to install the SSD and run your HP Recovery Discs successfully. If successful, your SSD will be partitoned with an OS partition and other partition. If this doesn't work you may be able to download Windows 8 OEM and install that, however your computer will have no HP customization and you won't be able to install any HP value-added software.
If your computer came with Windows 7, it is unlikely that your will be able to run your HP Recovery Discs successfully on the SSD. You may be able to download and install Windows 7, however your computer will have no HP customization and you won't be able to install any HP value-added software.
In both cases you may be able to "clone" the factory hard drive to the SSD.

  • How can I install a fresh OS on my 13" macbook. It has a New HDD and I have no install discs. It is a Mid 2010 Model

Can anyone tell me How I can install a new operating system on a new HDD of my Macbook Mid 2010 model. I don't have another Mac to use, I only have a PC, I also don't have access to any discs or bootable USB's.

Thanks for the quick response guys. The fulll story is, I bought the machine as not working from eBay with no HDD. It was listed as water damaged. Im competent at fixing water damage and got the machine up and running again in no time. I put a HDD in that I had lying around that was working last time I checked with hope of being able to format it using a recovery USB download from Apple and then going from there but I can't even get that far. Looking at the model release time it seems it would have been released with Snow Leopard so it makes sense that i'd need to get a disk. Unless you have any other suggestions?

  • Can I restore TM backup of Snow Leopard running on Ext disk to new HDD

My internal HDD will be replaced due to failure. Whilst have a TM backup prior to the failure, I have installed a temporary Snow Leopard system on my External drive which also has TM backups. As this is the latest updated system can I use the TM backup of my external drive to restore the system to the new HDD?
I have looked at the detailed TM 'tips' and FAQs but have to confess I am confused as to th right answer.

You could do that, but it may be better to install a fresh OS on the new drive and then use Migration Assistant to restore your data.

  • How could I restore everything in Firefox having new hdd replaced and Windows reinstalled?

Due to some reasons (possibly boot sector problems/virus infection) my laptop (running Windows XP Pro) failed to boot up last week. I've replaced a new hdd and just have Windows reinstalled.
The old hdd is in place and data on it is still accessible.
Version of Firefox was 3.6.4 (continuously upgraded from 3.0 beta 2), with all defaults installed on the old hdd.
Is it possible to restore everything (bookmarks, addons, history, preferences etc) in Firefox on the new hdd by copying files/folders from the old one? And what files/folders in specific?
Thank you so much for help in advance.

I was using another PC to post the question, please disregard the firefox version and plugins information above.

I reinstalled my system on a new hard drive, from time machine. However my old photos seem corrupt within aperture. iphoto seems okay. New photos take a long time to load as well.
    Have you heard of this?
    Thanks

We need a little more information to be able to help.
However my old photos seem corrupt within aperture.
What kind of corruption? And when do you see it? All your images, or only some? Are the images distorted, discolored, or not displayed at all?
Are you shooting in raw? Is your library referenced or managed? Is your library on your system volume or on an external harddrive?
And it would help to know your MacOS version and Aperture version too.

It should be like the very first time you synced your phone with I-Tunes. It will notice you haven't synced before and just copy everything from your phone into I-Tunes. It shouldn't delete anything from the phone, at least it never has for me. It just puts a copy of everything into I-Tunes and even if you delete an app for example from your phone and you decide you want it back later, you can just go back into I-Tunes and copy it back over. Hope this helps.

  • How to recover system from new hdd T410

I have a new HDD and trying to recover my system from "Lenovo_recovery" partition. Partition has been copped from old HDD.

    3) installed  "Recue and Recovery" but id does not offer anything
so, I am not able to recover from here.
    4) I have checked also to recover from blue button "ThinkVantage" but the same is there, it open dialog and say somthing like "Revocery functionality have been removed ... "
So how can I have my system? I still using trial one.
Node: my old system is windows 7 pro, but current one is windows 7 ultimat.
    Thanks.

When you open rescue and recovery there should be a window that opens that has menu options at the top of the window.   Backup, restore,  advanced, and help.  Does this window open?  If it does, hold your cursor over restore and there should be 2 options, restore your system and rescue files.  Choose restore your system.  The next window that shows up will show more options.  You want to choose the top one, restore my entire hard drive.  Unless you want to restore from a backup.  Is your backup in E:?
I am a little confused.  Are you trying to restore windowsw 7 pro or windows 7 ultimate?  What was on the old hard drive and what version was the trial version.  Is C: drive windows 7 pro.  Where is ultimate?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The hard drive is not formatted, and it must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in order to install OS X.
Close the OS X installer, and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility. Then, format your hard drive in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as Format > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, close Disk Utility and install OS X

  • Cannot download Win Updates after Vista Reinstall on New HDD

    Hello!
This is what I have going on.....
Toshiba Satellite L305-S5942 original hdd crashed. Bought a new HDD and I've already installed Windows Vista Home. I was able to register my key and validate Windows. But now when I try to download the Windows Updates I get errors. I've researched the errors up until now. I've tried using FixIt and that didn't work. I've tried using the Readiness Tool and I get a "catastrophic error" error message. I've even tried downloading Vista SP2 standalong installer and I still can't get any updates.
I did see something about a Toshiba laptop owner having issues after reinstalling on a new drive and it said something about installing some driver called Intel Radid Storage Technology. I have not been able to anything about this anywhere else.
Does anyone have a solution for the issues I'm having? Does changing the HDD from original really affect me from getting Win Updates even after I've already validated my Windows Key?

Sounds like you have restored to a drive with advanced-format technology. What is the exact model of the drive? We'll look it up.
In the meantime, try installing this new storage driver.

  • Reinstall cs3 on new HDD - where is old info?

Was using CS3 but HDD started going bad.  Had to use a new HDD and install OS, CS3, etc.  I'd like to copy CS3 setup/customization files from the old HDD to the new HDD.  Specifically, I'd like to copy my created metadata templates (where EXIF data was automatically added when uploading photos into Bridge), my created Keywords in Bridge Keywords tab, Bridge Workspace layout for Horizontal Layout #2, etc.  Anyone know where these files are stored?
I had defined a few simple custom Actions but didn't specifically save them so I read that these are probably lost.  I mention this in case someone knows how to retrieve them.
Thank-you in advance for any help.

Try to look in a folder
    C:\Users\[YOUR_USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
Or if you´re running Microsoft Windows XP it´s
    C:\Documents and Settings\[YOUR_USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
    Or for both
    %appdata%\Adobe
Hope you´ll find what you looking for.
