Reinstalling telnet on Leopard

Hello folks,
Some time ago I posted the following question:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7585545#7585545
To this day I have yet to resolve why telnet no longer works on my Leopard Macbook. so I decided to try and figure out how to re-install the telnet application itself with the hope that this would resolve my issue.
Sadly after lots of Googling and searching the Apple Support Forums I find myself stuck again.
Sorry for the basic nature of this question. Any advice and or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
John

Hi
I'm slightly confused by your problem? You say it no longer works? Did it ever work? If it did what did you do or what happened to break it? Does the localhost require kerberos pre-authentication first? What happens if you simply type telnet? Do you enter interactive mode?
You may be better off posting here:

    As Niel pointed out, yes.  The disk probably will look like the MBP disk (4) in this screenshot;

  • Reinstalling Tiger from Leopard on a iMac G-5

Can I reinstall Tiger from Leopard on iMac G-5 without loosing data? I would like to use OS9 again.
    Thanks. Ken Thomson

keep in mid that archive and install downgrade suggested above doesn't give you the option to preserve users settings. this means that you'll have to go through account setup again. You old home directory should be buried somewhere in the previous system folder (see this [link|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107297]).

Can I reinstall Tiger from Leopard without loosing any data? I would like to be able to use OS 9 again.
    Thanks, Ken Thomson

If you have an Intel Mac, OS 9 (Classic) won't work in Tiger, either.

  • Cant reinstall Safari on leopard 10.5.4

Cant reinstall Safari on leopard 10.5.4
You cannot install Safari on this volume. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.2 or newer.

It sounds like he dragged the alias of Safari off the dock. That does not remove the actual application. The application should still be in your applications folder. You might check and see. If it is still there you can drag it back to the dock from the applications folder and a new alias of the application will be back in the dock.

  • Will reinstall of Snow Leopard help iMac stop freezing?

    Hello,
I've been having problems with my Mac freezing.  I've tried all kinds of things (verify and repair permissions and disk etc, make sure enough free space, as well as checking fans, disk utility etc) and the problem persists.  It's a 24inch iMac that I bought in late 2008 and the problems have been  ongoing intermittently for  months now.  Basically what will happen is  that I’ll be using it when it will suddenly freeze and the screen goes  blank.  The only thing that works then is to restart by holding down the  power button on the back to turn it off and then on again.  I use it  most often for internet (I use firefox) but the issue has happened when  doing other things too, so I don’t think it’s related to any particular  programme.
I took it into the genius bar and after checking the disks and finding no problem their advice was to reinstall snow leopard.  I was the last appointment of the day before a long weekend and the guy was helpful but fairly rushed.  The thing is that I had this problem with leopard as well before upgrading to snow leopard, so I can't see how it's related to snow leopard.  So, is reinstalling snow leopard likely to help?  Would it be easier to upgrade now to Mountain Lion instead and see if that helps?
Any suggestions gratefully accepted and please let me know if there's other information that you would need to know in order to provide any suggestions.
    Thanks so much in advance

I have the same model. What I suggest you try next for this problem:
    1. Run the Apple Hardware Test. It can't detect all hardware problems, especially intermittent ones like you might be having, but it is still a good first step.
    2. Reset the SMC. I'm not sure why but this has fixed some odd problems I have had in the past with my 2008 iMac.
    3. If this doesn't help, try running for a while without any peripherals attached to your iMac besides the keyboard & mouse. If you don't see any freezing problems, try reattaching your other peripherals one by one & running that configuration long enough to see if one of them is causing your problems.
    4. If none of this helps, go ahead & reinstall Snow Leopard, making sure you run Software Update afterwards to update it to the latest version. The Snow Leopard installer isn't like earlier OS installers. To reinstall the system just run it & accept the defaults. It won't write over or alter your user data or create any "Previous System" folder stuff, so it is a fairly painless procedure. It even performs the equivalent of Disk Utility's verify disk step, so you don't have to do that beforehand.
    5. If none of this helps, reply to this topic & we can suggest other things to try.

  • Reinstalling mac os leopard on new hard drive

Hi, ive had meny problems with my macbooks hard drive failing before, infact i think its a design flaw, i wasn't forking out another 200 quid or so to get my hard drive replaced on this laptop, so i opened it up, and stuck in a hard drive from a broken exturnal hard drive,
when i got my mac apple released osx leopard and i got a copy, but i cannot reinstall from the disc as its asking for a previous version of mac to be installed on the hard drive, and will not let me install otherwise,
now i can run windows vista on it and use the disc for drivers, i have also tried ubuntu but i cannot get the drivers working without the mac part on.
i do have a macmini with os x 10 running on it, does any one know how i could create a backup, and put it onto the hard drive to reinstall macintosh on?
there is a reason for all this, i have a macmini server without a disc reader, and its impossible to set up remote disc from a windows machine, so it would also be nice to sort out my old macbook, specially since usb disc drives i brought also do not work on my mac mini.
    Thanks

When Apple releases a operating system they issue free upgrade disks with new Mac purchases because the currently boxed new Mac's have the older operating system on it.
Also the new Mac's at that time have a OS X installation disk say for 10.4 inside all sealed up and all, then you get the upgrade disk say 10.5 taped to the outside of the box or handed to you by Apple staff.
You tried installing 10.5 and it's a upgrade disk only, so you need the 10.4 disk that came inside the box with the Mac, as it also has drivers for that particular model. Install 10.4 first, then upgrade to 10.5.
If you have a Intel machine, then just pay $29 and install Snow Leopard 10.6 as it's better than 10.5.
If you have a PPC box, then your stuck on 10.5 forever.

  • Error while trying to reinstall os x leopard

alright, my imac broke down on me and would not boot up, so I went to my friend and borrowed his install disk(leopard), I tried to reinstall the os and got an error message it says "the installer could not validate the contents of the 'Essentials package Contact the software manufacturer for assistance" someone help or give advice on what I should do?

You cannot use an install disc from another computer, it has o be the one that came with your machine.  You can, however, use a retail copy of Leopard, the one with the black face and the big X on it.

  • Reinstall Tiger from Leopard

I upgraded to Leopard on my MacPro. Big mistake. Now Retrospect won't start up, Roxio Toast won't start up, Stuffit won't start up. Tried to reinstall but install won't start up. Font Book adds or subtracts fonts at will. Apple is NO HELP. I have been a Mac user over 20 years but my opinion of them has gone way down. How do I go back to Tiger?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Restore your backup.
If no backup, get a second SATA hard drive and install Tiger on that. The G5 supports two internal hard drives.
The programs you mentioned will work with Leopard, if you upgrade them to a certain version. In the future research your upgrade options before upgrading. And always backup your data before installing anything.

  • Need to Reinstall Mail from Leopard Disk

How do I reinstall just the Mail.app from the 10.5 disk?
If I do, will all the current mail boxes and messages stored on my hard drive still be there?
    Mail is from .Mac
    Thanks

    Mike,
Reinstalling Mail will not affect anything in your HOME folder. This includes anything in your mailboxes, any of your settings for Mail, etc.
Look on versiontracker.com for an application named Pacifist. Pacifist will allow you to browse the contents of the Leopard install disk, and extract/install just Mail.app. Are you sure that you need to reinstall Mail, and if so, why?

  • Reinstalling Tiger after Leopard

Quick question for you Apple experts!
I have loaded Leopard, and much as I have enjoyed the few days I've had it running, sadly, my TallyGenicom printer no longer works. I've e-mailed Tally and they say "IF we make a new driver we will let you know." (Very reassuring!)
So the only way I can get back to printing seems to be to reinstall Tiger. My question is - is there likely to be any problems or repercussions installing an older system over a newer one?
    Many thanks,
    Andy

How much does a new printer cost? Is your old printer something you cannot live without?
If you printer company is not going to provide support, I would dump them and get a modern printer that likes Leopard rather than going backwards just to accommodate a single item. There are printers that cost less than Leopard costs.

  • Reinstall using Retail leopard discs, MacBook Pro will not detect speakers

Hi, I just purchased a MacBook pro used, and the owner lost the original discs. He sold it to me with a formated (no OS) on the HDD, because I have upgraded my older mac with leopard I decided I would reinstall with that. The MacBook Pro is the very last model before the unibody (penryn 2.4/256mb video). Upon installation the greeting video played with no sound, and pressing the volume up key (shared with F12) did nothing, and once to the desktop, hitting that button resulted in dashboard launching (like the old style keyboards would).
Now I cannot seem to raise the volume, or use ANY of the function keys, I also cannot set the trackpad to use gestures. It would pretty much seem my MacBook Pro is missing its drivers for its internal speakers (they're not listed in the sound prefpane), trackpad, and keyboard. HELP!

Well this is mildly embarrassing but it IS valuble to others in my situation!
*OKAY SOLVED* (must be a record I posted the question a minute ago).
I forgot to mention I also couldn't adjust brightness, but after running the software update, it seems all of the proper drivers have been download and installed because I now have full proper function of the MacBook Pro. Thanks for the wasted space, but again, this could be useful for others. If this is happening to you, just run the Software Update tool (under the apple logo in the top left) and let it finish its 800mb update, all will be solved.

I had the same problem, except mine happened after restoring from a Time Machine backup onto my new unibody MacBook. Thanks to the OP.

  • After failed reinstall of Snow Leopard, MacBook shuts down on startup

Went to reinstall Snow Leopard on my 1.5-year-old MacBook, and inexplicably it told me it "can't install" the OS on the hard drive. Had to restart, and upon restart, it gave me a progress bar at the bottom of the gray screen with the Apple logo, and shut down. This is now what happens every time. What's happened??

See if it will boot in Safe Mode. (hold the Shift key when booting.)

  • Need to Reinstall Safari without Leopard CD

I deleted Safari because it kept crashing. I thought I could reinstall it from my Leopard CD but I lost the CD. Is there any way of reinstalling without the CD?

    Hi,
I did this, but now it says i can't use the program with the version of OSX that i have.
I'm sorry for the confusion, my previous response was directed towards Yugo, who is on a 10.4.11 system. In your case, unless you are willing to apply the 10.5.2 Combo Update, and barring someone sending you the application bundle for Safari from their Leopard DVD, I'm afraid there is no way to do it.
I don't know if you ccan install just Safari 3.0.4 from the 10.5.2 Combo Update without applying the update, but if the package installer does allow it, running an updated Safari with out-dated frameworks could spell even more trouble.

  • I can't install essential updates on reinstalled os x leopard!

I have a 2008 5th generation black macbook. It's a good 4 years old, so I figured I'd wipe my computer all together and reinstall os x. Once I did, everything is working fine until I do the software updates. Safari even looks like it's from 2008 lol. The issue is, it downloads the updates fine, but once it restarts and begins the actual install, it gets to the point where it's "Configuring update" and completely stops in it's tracks. I've tried letting it do its thing and walked away, because maybe it would actually take a while but no, the blue progress bar is in the same exact point. So I'm stuck with leopard 10.5.2 Please help!!!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Download and install the OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update to get all the updated files at once.
(Be patient. It is over 750MB in size, so it takes a while to download.) It will also take a while to install, once completely downloaded.
