I want to reinstall Tiger but can't do it over Leopard so how can I go back to Tiger?

After you backup all your important files, startup from your Tiger install disk. If your iMac came with Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), you'll have to use the disk that came with your computer. A retail copy of Tiger or a copy from another Model Mac will not work. Start to install Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and on the "Select Destination" screen, choose your hard drive and click the "Options" button. Inside the options sheet, select "Erase and Install".

The last security update released for Tiger users was the 2009-005 update. The latest version of QuickTime is 7.6.4. The last version of iTunes that can run on Tiger is 9.2.1, because 10.0 only supports Mac OS X Leopard and later.
So, are you on version 9.2.1?
Was it Tiger or Leopard you had on the drive before?

Reinstalling Tiger: Software Update Missing Many Updates

I've seen a few similar topics on this issue, but only in so far as Software Update missing an update here or an update there. I am currently reinstalling Tiger on a Power Macintosh G3 B&W that has been heavily upgraded. The system specs are as follows..
1GHz PowerLogix G3 (using MAChSpeed to enable full processor speed since the included CPU Director software won't work in 10.4.11)
1GB of RAM
128MB Radeon 9200 Graphics card connected to an LG 1952 display and set to 1440x900 / millions of colors
I'd go on, but the remainder of the hardware upgrades should have no effect on Software Update to the best of my knowledge. Previously I had this machine running 10.4.11, and through the Software Update program I had installed all of the recommended updates, which included numerous security updates, Safari 4.0.3, and iTunes 8.2.1. Everything was running perfectly smoothly, but after having tested several software configurations and having decided on one in particular, I set out to reinstall Tiger from scratch in order to keep things as clean as possible. I've tried several different times now with the same results each time. Once the system is up and running, regardless of whether or not I install MAChSpeed before or after running Software Update, Software Update simply does not provided all of the updates that I believe are actually there. It did see and did allow me to install the following updates..
10.4.11 Combo update (I installed this one separately before any other updates)
Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2
iTunes Phone Driver 1.0
Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update
Quicktime 7.6.4
Security Update 2009-005 (PPC)

Unless Security Update 2009-005 is meant to be a combined security update (doubtful), there are obviously several security updates that are missing. Also, I'm surprised that Software Update saw and installed Quicktime 7.6.4 but didn't see or install the latest PPC versions of iTunes or Safari. Safari 4.0.3 as I understand requires Security Update 2009-002, so naturally it would not see or install Safari without that update being installed first. While I don't necessarily mind installing updates manually (downloading them individually off Apple's support site and then installing by hand), I really prefer using Software Update to better automate the process. Up until now I have never had any problems with Software Update, but this problem is certainly aggravating. My primary concern is that I have no idea what updates are necessary and what updates are not necessary to ensure proper and relatively secure operation of my system, and I have no way of knowing whether or not Software Update will see any future updates (provided that Apple continues to support Tiger for a little while longer). If Software Update is missing crucial updates out of the gate, how can I be sure that it will see any further crucial updates that may hopefully be released?
I know that's part question / part rant, but I've been wracking my brain for the past few days over this one. Any information that could help solve this problem will definitely be appreciated, especially since my B&W is my preferred browsing machine.
Incidentally, my iBook, a Clamshell FW SE, is currently running the same setup that my B&W was previously running.. 10.4.11 with Quicktime 7.6.4, iTunes 8.2.1, and Safari 4.0.3, so as far as I can tell, this shouldn't be hardware related (my iBook is far less powerful than my B&W currently is). Also, a cursory glance at the Installed Updates list on my iBook definitely shows that my Software Update on my B&W is missing many updates.

I reformatted the drive first and did a clean install. I'm currently in the process of downloading the standalone installers for Safari 4.0.3 and iTunes 8.2.1. It's looking like that's the solution at present, but I'm still curious as to why Software Update won't see any iTunes or Safari updates within the current system configuration's capabilities (speaking to both apps possibly being cumulative). I can't see Software Update simply not having those updates because there is newer version out, if indeed they are cumulative, since that would mean that anyone reinstalling or upgrading on an older machine would be forced to perform some of the updates manually where not too long ago they would have been able to simply use Software Update as a "one stop" solution.
Oh well, maybe I'm just being too picky . I've had to deal with running around in circles to find software updates for manual installs for years with Windows systems, and Apple's "one stop" Software Update system was a wonderful, welcome change to that.

Problem with reinstalling Tiger

I wanted to reinstall Tiger with X11, so I put in the disk and started the installation process. I went through the part where it asked if I wanted to save my home files and whatnot, and of course I said yes. However, a few seconds after the installation began, I wanted to cancel it. So I quit and tried to reboot to my regular Tiger on my Hard Drive. However, it didn't do this. Instead, I was taken to the installation setup again. At this point I figured the only way I could get back was to reinstall Tiger. However, it didn't give me the option of saving all my home files, so I selected the option that said "install tiger for the first time." When it was finished, my computer looked as though it had been wiped and I had lost everything. Fortunately, my applications were all still in the applications folder, and my old home folder was saved under a folder in my HD called Previous Systems.
My question is: is there some way to restore my home folder, because right now I have my official home folder, maxlivingston, and within that, another folder (the one with all my stuff), named maxlivingston. Additionally, is there a way to restore all my old preferences and stuff.
Oh, and one more question. Before, the Terminal shell was tcsh, now it's bash. Is this because I installed X11?

Well, all I can say is you sure went about things the hard way. X11 can be installed separately and doesn't require reinstalling OS X. Furthermore, you never, ever, abandon an installation that's under way. Bash is your shell because that's the default shell used by OS X. You would have changed your shell to tcsh.

Uninstall leopard on my quicksilver g4 and reinstall tiger

I have run into serious problems with leopard on my quicksilver mac. I get the kernal panic. I have tried disk warrior and it shuts down.I tried to reinstall tiger, which ran perfectly in the past. It tells me that I have to upgrade panther to 10.3. and then upgrade to tiger. I had been running Tiger for 2 years but it doesn't seem to know that. I can't get into the computer to do this. I repurchased Panther and tried to reinstall it and it says I can not do that. There was a system error. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

It is very likely that your problem is not with the OS version you are running but with your hard drive. Try booting from an installer optical disk (preferably the Leopard retail one) & instead of running an installer, run Disk Utility from its "Utilities" menu. Try running its "Repair Disk" function on your internal hard drive. If this hangs or is unable to repair all problems it finds, you will probably have to reformat the drive. *Note that this will erase all data on it, so you must have a backup of at least your user files or you will lose everything!*
Some background info:
Disk Warrior is a fine utility but like any other such utility, you must run a version of it that is compatible with the Tiger/Leopard file system to prevent problems. Additionally, if you try to boot the computer from a Disk Warrior CD, it must include an OS capable of booting your Mac model. Refer to the Disk Warrior web site for more info about this.
If your Tiger installer disk says that you must upgrade the existing OS, it is what is known as an "upgrade" disk, not a full or retail Tiger installer. It would not tell you that you have to "upgrade panther to 10.3" because 10.3 is Panther. It is telling you that it is only capable of installing Tiger (10.4) over Panther (10.3). Thus, if you have any other OS version such as Tiger or Leopard installed, it will tell you that it can't do the install.
All retail & some other installer disks offer several install options, depending on what they find installed on the target drive. See for example Installing Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard for more info about this. The option & target drive you choose determines if the installation is possible or not.

Can't reinstall Tiger 10.4.6

I previously upgraded from the original Panther 10.3 on my Power PC G4 with the Black retail upgrade disk with the large silver X (v10.4.6) that I purchased from Apple and everything was fine for 2 years. This month I installed a new internal ADA 320 Gb drive (properly using the correct jumper in the back) and installed Tiger on this drive using the install disk. Now I reformated the original drive (60Gb Mac OS EXtended) and can't for the life of me get the Install disk to reinstall Tiger on the reformated drive. It gets half way thru and freezes. The same thing occurs on my 500 GB external LaCie Drive (Firewire). I have tried to install using cutom and just the basic essentials to no avail. I would like to be able to have an alternate drive to start up from but so far have been frustrated. I even reinstalled the original Panther on these drives (performed easily and no problem) so that the Tiger Install disk can do an archieve and install but alas to no avail. Anybody have any suggestions as to what's wrong with my Tiger Install Disk.

It sounds to me like it could be the disc, or it could be the optical drive. You have to reduce the equation to one unknown by using a different drive or different disc to see which one (if either) it is.
Another way to get the OS onto that drive is to do a complete bootable backup clone. Of course this won't be as clean an OS as a fresh installation but will work until you have the issue sorted out.
Cloning And Backup Tools
A bootable clone is an exact copy of your drive which is capable of booting your computer. Making a copy of your computer which is capable of actually starting the computer requires special copying procedures. Some people just back up data files but if you have problems you have to reinstall all your operating system and all your applications. With a bootable clone you just start up from the backup drive and clone back everything.
To copy files from one hard drive to another hard drive you can use:

Do I Need To Reinstall Tiger 10.4.11?

I downloaded the latest Tiger update - 10.4.11 - the day it came out and everything was fine.
Since then I have let somebody not familiar with .Mac fiddle around with my Mac Pro.
Now when I go to the System Preferences and click on .Mac either the window won't open, or if it does nothing happens after I press the Sync button.
Do I need to reinstall Tiger 10.4.11?
If I do, how can I achieve this online, given that I already have a version installed on my computer?

Problem reinstalling Tiger onto Powerbook

Recently I upgraded from my 12" Powerbook to a new Macbook Pro, leaving my dad my old computer. I erased everything and wanted to reinstall the system.
Everything went well with the erase and install until I got to inserting CD2. After that, in the middle of the process it shows an error and says I should try again. I eject the CD, it tells me to reinsert it and it happens all over again.
Anyone know how to solve that? It happens as it tries to install garage band as it would seem.

On the Powerbook. Check the boot disk for errors.
Shut down the PBook. Now, press the power button, hold down the C key, and insert the restore disk all at the same time. Keep holding down the C key until you see the Apple logo. An Installer window will open but DO NOT proceed with any installations, instead from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Disk Utility. In the DU window, select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab and click: Verify If DU reports errors, click Repair. When it's finished, from the Menu Bar select Utilities/Startup Disk and select MacintoshHD 10.x.x and click Restart.
Now try reinstalling Tiger.

I don't think so, if you select the correct partition for Mac OS X.
But you have to re-install the boot camp assistant to the utility folder, just incase you want to delete the XP partition and make it back to single partition.
I might be wrong, just post this too at boot camp forum to get more answer from more expert boot camp user.

Reinstalling Tiger with an existing Windows partition

I have a MacBook with three partitions on the HD: one with Tiger on it, another NTFS-formatted with Windows, and a third FAT32-formatted with data on it. Unfortunately, I have to reinstall Tiger. Since bootcamp doesn't exist for Tiger anymore and I thus won't be able to reinstall Windows, I have to make sure the windows and the data partition are not touched. Also, I'm worried about the MBR; if the Tiger installer overwrites it, I'll have no way to boot into Windows, even if the installation is still valid. So, is there anything I have to pay attention to, is it even possible?

Why reinstall Tiger? can't you just restore it from a backup clone?
Use your external drive to make an image of Windows, also, with WinClone, or invest in something for Windows to do clone/restore.
Seems like you had to have used something other than, or in addition to, BootCamp Assistant to begin with to have a three partition setup.
Last but not least, pick up Leo DVD 10.5.4.

Reinstalling Tiger: Some Questions

My Appologies if this has been covered before. Something is broken on my system. I'm not sure exactly what it is but there are certain software applications that cause kernal panics on my system while working fine on other systems running 10.4.11. I've done a lot of work trying to deal with the problem and managed to eliminate most of the possible causes. So the next stop in my attempt to solve this problem will be to reinstall Tiger. I've never done this before. Since I'm into audio production I have a lot of material on my hard drive that I would prefer not to reinstall. (Logic Pro Studio, for instance take about 4 hours to install.) In some cases I no longer have the installers for programs i purchased of the web. (At the time I didn't know what those little brown boxes where so I deleted them.) So the first question is can I reinstall OS 10.4.11 without reinstalling everything else? I have the original install disks for my computer (a 22 month old intel iMac 1.83 with 2 gig of ram). I can't remember if these will install all the way up to 10.4.11. I've done a system backup using the Lacie backup software and a lot of my important stuff is actually on 2 external hard drives. What else do I need to do before starting this and what's the procedure? Thanks

To reinstall the OS without reinstalling all your software, you would use the Archive and Install option. It may also be good to "preserve user settings".
Depending on your install disc version, may then need to update to 10.4.11. Download the Combo updater and that will get you up to snuff in one shot.
Before you do the reinstall, double check that all your backup needs are current.
One note, though the Archive and Install does replace the OS files, there is a chance that this will dilute the troubleshooting, as the presence of all third party items can't be discounted as suspect.
Still, a troubleshooting step none the less, just thought I'd mention that...

keep in mid that archive and install downgrade suggested above doesn't give you the option to preserve users settings. this means that you'll have to go through account setup again. You old home directory should be buried somewhere in the previous system folder (see this [link|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107297]).

If you have an Intel Mac, OS 9 (Classic) won't work in Tiger, either.

Reinstalling Tiger on G4 problem!!!

Okay so since I'm still a newbie to mac's (this is my first one ever), I need any help anyone can provide. When I eject the disk the machine will reboot just fine with no erros. What is going on with machine and trying to reinstall Tiger???

Well, if everything else is right and as you say, then seems the CD/DVD is damaged, or the Optical drive is bad, but if those install disks are CDs then it's not the Optical, only if we're talking DVDs for them... assuming we've eliminated the other reasons it can't find the driver.
Hmmm, I have a set of Install CD's that are miss marked number wise... but you would've noticed that on another install.

Quick question for you Apple experts!
I have loaded Leopard, and much as I have enjoyed the few days I've had it running, sadly, my TallyGenicom printer no longer works. I've e-mailed Tally and they say "IF we make a new driver we will let you know." (Very reassuring!)
So the only way I can get back to printing seems to be to reinstall Tiger. My question is - is there likely to be any problems or repercussions installing an older system over a newer one?

How much does a new printer cost? Is your old printer something you cannot live without?
If you printer company is not going to provide support, I would dump them and get a modern printer that likes Leopard rather than going backwards just to accommodate a single item. There are printers that cost less than Leopard costs.
